l SUMMER CAMP FUN / 2019

This year marks a milestone for Summer Camp Fun. One that is filled with exciting changes as we celebrate our 10 year anniversary. We’ve redesigned our logo and our directory. We created this directory for the
selective parents looking to make summer a more personalized and tailored experience for their children. When I look at the innumerable options kids have during the summer, I am overwhelmed with gratitude at the progress we continue to make to meet their fast-changing needs. As a parent, I also know very well that more options can mean more stress. We want our directory to be a starting point for time-strapped parents, that’s why we have compiled the most comprehensive list of camps in South Florida. Our directory listings now include the age groups and the category that best describes each camp to help you narrow down your search quickly. We have also re-launched our website with the same goal in

mind. You can now search by category, find a narrowed down list of camps in your area that fits your child’s needs, and then link directly to that camp’s website to register and sign them up for the BEST. SUMMER. EVER!
I am humbled by the continued support of our vision and grateful for the relationships we’ve forged with all the camps in South Florida. We know that we would not be here today if it wasn’t for your wonderful programs. This is joint effort on all of our parts, as parents, as program directors, as a community, is all for the inclusive growth of the children we serve. Though our logos and guides may be new, our promise is unchanging. Our promise to do everything we can to give parents the simple, clear, and concise information they need. Our promise to do everything we can to highlight the unique qualities of all the wonderful summer programs in South Florida. Most important, our promise to never stop learning or growing, just as we expect our kids to do.
Thank you for a wonderful 10 years, we look forward to many more together.

“Most kids, most of the time, are totally doing the right thing. They are listening to you, being respectful to each other, playing and having fun in activities (they may not have chosen for themselves), and following directions and instructions without incident. Of course, we would all like to have more of that kind of behavior at camp, but almost all of our discussions about camper behavior revolve around what to do when campers are breaking down, falling apart, or having a hard time.”
For parents, it is never easy to pick up your child from camp and hear that they have misbehaved or had a hard time following rules. It can be embarrassing and it can make you feel helpless because you have very little control over the actions of your child when they are away at school or at camp. Scott Arizala is a trainer and consultant in summer camp. He wrote an article titled, The Kids are All Right where he challenges camp counselors on the roles they play to help support, guide, and facilitate great behavior. He emphatically reminds adults that, “Camp is about kids. It’s about what they get out of it and how we as the adults can set up a community where relationships matter and where everyone is important.” The guidance and challenge are excellent and best of all they can be applied and reinforced at home.
Kids benefit from good behavior, both externally and internally. Good behavior leads to praise, from peers, from counselors and should extend once they get back home from their parents. It is important that they receive praise so that they learn how to make good choices and decisions. When you praise a child for good behavior you help them connect what they did and what happened because of it, helping kids understand that they have power and control. Kids also benefit by developing a positive self-concept because being successful drives feelings of confidence, competence, mastery, and so much more. We feel good about who we are and what we can do, which makes us happier. Finally, there are social benefits of good behavior, which really just comes down to the fact that people want to spend more time with happy and successful people. Scott highlights the rules of the game as being consistent, settling clear routines, and being inclusive. Here is how you can apply these same rules of the game at home.
Be ConsistentOne of the reasons that children make bad or more challenging choices is because they don’t know what to expect from the adults around them. They are testing the boundaries to see if they are real. As parents you can start by being consistent with rules and consequences, if it’s not OK today, it shouldn’t be OK tomorrow. If he can’t do it, then neither should a sibling or even you as a parent (for the most part). The object here is to apply them
consistently across people, situations, times, etc. so that when they enter a different environment with a different set of rules, they can be prepared to expect the same.
Clear RoutinesCamp is definitely one of the most unique places that most kids will experience. To support the best behavior, you have to be clear about what you expect from your child and their behavior at camp just like you do at home. Beyond explaining the ground rules, try to explain the various routines that they may encounter at camp and how they might be different than what they experience at school or at home. What do you do as a parent or family that happens every day consistently? Those routines often
become second nature to us, but we have to get good at teaching them. Whether you are talking about meals, homework, going to sleep, preparing for an activity, etc., think about what the routine is and how you can explicitly explain it.The best way start setting clear routines at home is to pre-plan and answer these five questions for each routine.3 Who is doing what and when (adult or child)?3 Which family member takes the lead?3 What is the goal?3 What do you want your child to know?3 What happens if the plan is messed up or changes? When you are clear with the routines at home you are actually giving kids the playbook to be successful in every other environment.
Be InclusiveThe more inclusive you can be as an adult, the easier it is for each child to mimic that good behavior and fit into different programs and cultures. When a child (or anyone) feels a sense of belonging they tend to identify with and adhere to rules of a given environment. “You see this happen at camp all the time. Things like the random fanny pack that never sold from the camp store five years ago became all the rage when a counselor sported it loud and proud. They made it cool by doing something different. It’s more than fashion and inside jokes. The same thing happens to campers’ behavior when we create a space where we strive to include everyone and where campers have a lot of options.”Here are some things you can do to create a more inclusive environment for your child at home:3 Show openness and acceptance — it’s OK to be different; in fact, being different and unique should be celebrated. Start by taking time to celebrate the differences within your own family. You may be a planner but your child’s free spirit can teach you to loosen up on control and enjoy the spur of the moment. Likewise, your planning can provide for some structure for your child.

3 Get uncomfortable yourself — doing something outside of your comfort zone will help you teach your child to accept every peer’s unique take. 3 Leave labels behind — it is ultimately not that helpful to take a label like “ADHD” or “autism” and apply it to your child’s peers or even your child. Those assumptions come with a lot of baggage and tend to lower expectations of behavior. Instead, leave the labels—and the ideas that probably popped into your head—behind and choose recreational programs that are right for them and offer them the ability to be a part of a diverse, rich community. Encourage your child to make friends regardless of ability, race, language, and income. Teach them that
we are integral members of a community. 3 Check yourself — we are all a bit exclusive and we just have to ad-mit it. Be honest with yourself and realize those feelings when they happen. Then you can change your behavior based on those feelings to be more inclusive. There are so many more ideas that can help campers be successful at your camp. Take the time to think about what it means to be success-ful as a camper at your camp, then develop ways to explicitly teach to those ideas. You’ll be amazed at what happens
Our job as parents should be to create opportunities for our children to practice good decisions so they can go off to camp and maximize the benefits of good behavior.

COUNSELOR IN TRAIning PROGRAMSNot quite a Counselor
Not quite a Camper
“Can’t I just stay home?” What do you do with a teen ( or tween) who you know may be too old to attend day camp but not old enough to work? Surely, if you are a parent of a child in this age group, you have encountered the dilemma. For teens, there is nothing better than summer vacation but for their parents it may be a source of stress and concern. Studies show that kids who are not engaged in educational activities may fall behind academically especially when the long summer days are wasted in front of the TV. For parents of older kids, concerns like these can be exasperated by the real dangers that also come from leaving teens to hang out all day. Specialty Camps that cater to specific interests are an excellent option but they may not run all summer long the way day camps tend to run.
Luckily, Counselor (or Leader) in Training programs are emerging as another great option for parents of teens. They provide the perfect transition for this age group as they phase out of day camps. More and more camps and summer programs are looking to this age group to lend a hand as they are just the right age to start volunteering. CIT programs teach teens leadership and allow them the opportunity to make camp a
memorable experience for younger kids. Because they are not employment opportunities for teens, you may still be required to pay full or partial tuition. They are definitely an investment in your child, allowing them to build confidence, manage responsibility, and think independently. The decisions they make will have a real impact for themselves and for the campers they mentor, giving them a much different learning experience than that of which occurs at school.
To become a Counselor in Training, your teen may need to apply and pay tuition. The program is typically for kids between the ages of 12-17 but can vary by each specific program. It is highly encouraged that you apply for these positions as soon as they become available as they are usually very limited and in high demand.

Summer vacation should be fun! And that doesn’t
mean it has to be a break from learning. In the summer, your children have the oppor-tunity to learn and grow be-
yond the rigors of the classroom. Nearly every summer activity can include an element of fun, interactive learning. Here are some tips to help make summer learning a meaningful, rewarding experience for your children (and you!):
Read to achieve! Studies have shown that children who read for at least 20 minutes each day score in the 90th percentile on standardized tests. Take turns reading aloud with your children. With older children, consider reading a book together as a family book club. Find opportunities for your children to practice reading. Encourage them to read restaurant menus and ask them to read signs and store names.
Play board games that encourage strategic thinking, word play and creativity. Give your children arts and crafts materials to design their own games. Keep it light and fun!
Neighborhood lemonade stands reinforce math skills while building community. Add a book share for neighborhood kids to hang out and share their favorites while they cool off with the lemonade.
Provide a journal for vacation or overnight camp. Children can create a photo journal documenting the new discoveries and ex-periences.Log into the digital learning resources your children became famil-iar with throughout the school year or download new learning apps.
Give back! Donate books your children have outgrown. Encourage them to sort through their book shelf and reward them with the feeling of giving back and the opportunity to stock up on new reading treasures.
Turn your family vacation into a college tour. Add a local university as a stop or build your travel around schools your children and you are eyeing.
Look for college summer programs for high school students. Many universities offer programs for students to try classes, live in a dorm and have a taste of life on campus. Some even offer college credit! Summer is a great time to build a resume as a volunteer or intern.
Enroll your children in an August back to school program to ease the transition into the new year. Look at local schools for a pro-gram near you.
Relax, have fun and enjoy this special time together!
