Maximising positive impacts Tourism will always bring some positive

benefits to a destination. Appropriate tourism development seeks

to maximise these benefits whilst minimising negative impacts.

The goal of tourism development should be to spread the benefits as widely as possible through the community.

Retention of visitor spending Ensure visiting tourist spend their

money only in the destination and not elsewhere. This can be achieved by ensuring that all the visitors needs are met in the destination.

Avoid leakages from the local economy. In Thailand 70% of all income ends up going into the coffers of overseas airlines, hotel groups etc.

Staff Training and Development Staff who have been trained and who have

developed new skills will be able to work at a higher level within the travel and tourism industry.

Staff trained to be hotel receptionists will develop transferable skills (computer literacy, languages). Staff trained to be hotel managers will learn even greater skills!

Better paid jobs such as these will also result in more money staying in local economy (see retention of visitor spending).
