SHAVE FOR LEUKAEMIA
Flynn Edis (Year 6); a fighting survivor of Leukaemia, is shaving his head on the 20th September to raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. Please help him reach his goal!! He is taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave. He has also convinced Mark St Baker to shave his head and beard and Miss Lucy Capstick will also be cutting her long locks. Miss Simone Amaro will be allowing Flynn to choose any colour to dye her hair in support of this great cause (he has chosen bright pink). Flynn’s goal is to raise $2000 and he is already well on the way to achieving this. Let’s support him and hopefully exceed his goal. You are able to sponsor him through a donation at our school or go to our Facebook page and donate directly via the link. It is great to see so many of our community already supporting him and this very personal journey.
The shave will occur at a special assembly on Friday 20th September at 2:30.
Got It Program Congratulations to these Stage 1 students who have recently completed the Got It program. We have developed our skills in identifying emotions, boosting our self-esteem, encouraging empathy and developing awareness in social situations. Sofiya Hecker - I do belly breathing to help me or I shake my glitter bottle. Charlie McFarland – I learnt about feelings like happy, sad, worried, angry and surprised. Hayden Webb – I use my glitter bottle when I lose in soccer because I’m disappointed. It helps me calm down. Hamish Campbell – I learnt how to Stop, Think, Do. Joellie Valance – I liked making the glitter bottles. You can shake them if you’re angry to calm down. Xaiden Zuccato – I liked drawing around our bodies and finding where we feel uncomfortable feelings. Billy Collis – I liked my mum coming to school. Andrew Fankhauser – I liked playing with Mr Felt Face.
1/2G - MISS GRIFFIN
1/2G were extremely lucky this week and got to attempt a STEM project with the brave Mrs. Marsh. Students took on different roles imperative for the design process. These roles include: -Chief Architect -Testing Coordinator -Safety Officer -Challenge Captain -Materials Master -Reporter -Construction Worker The task involved students designing and building a ship for pirate Pete with different materials. Following the Engineering Design Process, students had to ask questions, imagine it, plan it, create it, improve it and share it. This hands on activity got students thinking, and the end product was fantastic! Arrrrrghh Me Harty!
STAFF IN THE SPOTLIGHT - MRS AIMEE GIBBS
Mrs Aimee Gibbs is a happy, vibrant member of staff who beings a smile to everyone’s face. Mrs Gibbs is passionate about helping children at HPS to achieve their goals. Mrs Gibbs enjoys singing in her band and spending time with family and friends.
ITALIAN - MRS VIOLI
What a busy term! 1/2K has settled in well to Italian lessons. The class is learning to sing their numbers to 10 in Italian and also our cute ‘kissing’ song about bedtime routines linked to our big book. We will now move on to learning our colours in Italian. Stage 2 classes are finishing their research projects about a city visited by ‘The Little Red Car’ in our big book. They are able to choose how they present their information and will have class time to complete these. To finalise the unit, each pair of students will present their information to the rest of the class. I am looking forward to hearing what they have uncovered in their research, as some of the projects which are almost completed are looking fantastic! Stage 3 classes are underway with their food unit. They are learning their vocabulary needed for the unit. They are also learning to write more complex sentences introducing some plural rules when writing sentences in Italian. They will eventually be able to work in pairs to write a short play about going to an Italian restaurant and order their food in Italian. This will happen much later in the term.
OUR PPC APPROACH
At Hanwood Public, we have introduced a wellbeing program that we refer to as the PPC. This is a PROACTIVE, POSITIVE and CONSEQUENCE model, whereby parents are contacted by teachers to inform them of: Great things their child is doing; Discuss small issues that have occurred BEFORE they become big issues; and Consequences that have occurred due to continued behaviour that is not acceptable. We are finding that the behaviour issues are becoming less as a result of parents and teachers working together and nips in the bud any potential issues becoming serious. It assists parents and teachers to work together to enhance the positive relationships we have at Hanwood Public School. Our school mantra is that it is “Cool to be Kind” and our proactive phone calls are as-sisting us to create this culture with in our school.
