6Pipelines sizes can be 2" and 3" also. But the spreadsheet is developed from 4" onwards.

This Spreadsheet enables quick reference and calulations for maximum allowable pressure for a user identified service for in plant process piping, liquid and gas pipelines. This is also useful for operations persons doing modifications on the pipelines and piping as well as for preliminery design checks. This is not meant to replace a systematic design performed with full referencing to the precise applicable clauses/sub-clauses of the relavant codes and standards. The spreadsheet enables to find the allowable internal pressure in process plant piping as per ASME B31.3. Also on the same spreadsheet a provision has been made to check its pressure compatibility of the pipeline portion with either ASME B31.4 (Liquid Hydrocarbon pipelines) or ASME B31.8 (Gas pipelines). For example, assume that a pump discharge piping located inside the plant -A is routed to another plant - B, several miles away. So the integrity of the entire system is divided into piping in the plant - A (built as per B31.3), the pipeline between the two plants (built as per B31.4 for liquids or B31.8 for gas pipelines as the case may be) and the piping in the plant - B (built as per B31.3), can be checked simultaneously using this spreadsheet.

3. Please note that the calculations in table are done using some values. A user can use each row for the sizes and input data of his requirement by inserting the values in black cells. Blue font cells contain standard commercial pipe data already incorporated in the spreadsheet. Calculated results are in Green font cells. User should know nominal pipe size, schedule no., material, material grade, method of pipe production (ERW, Seamleass etc.), design temperature, location for gas lines, and corrosion allowance to be given.

Type A construction also applicable to "Liquid Petroleum Transportation Piping Code." ANSI B31.4-1979. Users may refer to the latest versions of the ASME Standards and GPSA book for correctness. Some of the tables are from older versions.

Please note that the Table nos. mentioned the worksheets Table 1,2,3 & 4, FIG. 17-23, 24, 25, 26, 27 & 28 (The letters T, F, Y, E are added on each sheet name along with Table or Fig no. so that you can quickly select the appropriate reference worksheet) refer to the table nos. in GPSA book / Applicable Standard from where they are produced.

For 31.4 and 31.8 code pipelines, do not consider mill tolerances. The nominal thk is used in the calculation. Pls. see below.403.2.2 Wall Thickness and Defect Tolerances. Wall thickness tolerances and defect tolerances for pipe shall be as specified in applicable pipe specifications or dimensional standards included in this Code by reference in Mandatory Appendix I. Design factors in this Code were established with due consideration for underthickness tolerance and maximum allowable depth of imperfections allowed by the referenced standards; no additional allowance is necessary However, for 31.3 piping, mill tolerances are to be subtracted.

Note : These notes are requirements of the Code. Those marked with an asterisk(*) restate requirements found in the text of the Code. The other Notes are limitations or special requirements applicable to particular materials. Full interpretation of these notes will require reference to ANSI/ASME B31.3a-1984 Edition.

(1)* The stress valves in Table A-1 and the design stress values in Tables A-2 are basic allowable stresses in tension in accordance with 302.3.1(a). For pressure design, the stress values from Table A-1 are multiplied by the appropriate quality factor E (E c from Table A-1A, or EJ from Table A-1B). Stress values in shear and bearing are stated in 302.3.1 (b); those in compression in 302.3.1(c).

(3)* This casting quality factor can be enhanced by supplementary examination in accordance with 302.3.3(c) and Table 302.3.3c. The hither factor from Table 302.3.3.C may be substituted for this factor in pressure design equations.

(4)* In shaded areas, stress values printed in italics exceed two-thirds of the expected yield strength at temperature. All other stress values in shaded areas are equal to 90% of expected yield strenght at temperature. See 302.3.2(d)(4) and 302.3.2(d) [Note (3)]

(6)* The minimum temperature shown is that design minimum temperature for which the material is normally suitable without impact testing other than that required by the material specification. However, the use of a material at a design minimum temperature below -20⁰F [-29⁰C] is established by rules elsewhere in this Code, including any necessary impact test requirements.

(7*) A single bar (l) in these Stress Tables indicates there are conditions other than stress which affect usage above or below the temperature, as described in other referenced notes. A double bar (ll) after a tabled stress indicates that use of the material is prohibited above that temperature. A double bar (ll) before the stress valve for "Min. Temp. to 100⁰F" indicates that the use of the material is prohibited below the listed minimum temperature. At temperatures where there are no stress values, the material may be used in accordance with 323.2 unless prohibited by a double bar(ll).

(8)* There are restrictions on the use of this material in the text of the Code.

(20) For pipe sizes NPS 8 and larger and for wall thicknesses of schedule 140 or heavier, the minimum specified tensile strength is 70.0 ksi [483 MPa].

(26) These unstabilized grades of stainless steel have increasing tendency to intergranular carbide precipitation as the carbon content increases above 0.03%.

(28) For temperatures above 1000⁰F [538⁰C], these stress valves apply only when the carbon content is 0.04% or higher.

(30) For temperatures above 1000⁰[538⁰C], these stress values may be used only if the material has been heat treated at a temperature of 2000⁰F [1090⁰C] minimum.

(31) For temperatures above 1000⁰F [538⁰C], these stress valves may be used only if the material has been heat treated by heating to a minimum temperature of 1900⁰F [1040⁰C] and quenching in water or rapidly cooling by other means.

(36) The specification permits this material to be furnished without solution heat treatment or with other than a solution heat treatment. When the material has not been solution heat treated the minimum temperature shall be -20⁰F [-29⁰C] unless the material is impact tested per 323.3.

(40) The stress values for austenitic stainless steels in these Tables may not be applicable if the material has been given a final heat treatment other than that required by the material specification and any overriding requirements of this Code called for by Notes (30) or (31).

(47) If no welding is employed in fabrication of piping from those materials, the stress values may be increased to 33.3 ksi [230 MPa].

(51) Special P-Numbers SP-1, SP-2, and SP-3 of carbon steels are not included in P-No. 1 because of possible high carbon, high manganese combination which would require special consideration in qualification. Qualification of any high carbon, high manganese grade may be extended to other grades in its group.

(55) Pipe produced to this specification is not intended for high temperature service. The Stress values apply to either non-expanded or cold expanded material in the as-rolled, normalized, or normalized and tempered condition.

(57)* Conversion of carbides to graphite may occur after prolonged exposure to temperatures over 800⁰F [425⁰C] (see Appendix F).

(59)* For temperatures above 900⁰F [480⁰C], consider the advantages of killed steel [see Appendix F].

BASIC ALLOWABLE STRESSES IN TENSION, psi(1)

Page 51: Max Allowable Pressure of Pipes and Pipellines CER 04022013

Note : These notes are requirements of the Code. Those marked with an asterisk(*) restate requirements found in the text of the Code. The other Notes are limitations or special requirements applicable to particular materials. Full interpretation of these notes will

(1)* The stress valves in Table A-1 and the design stress values in Tables A-2 are basic allowable stresses in tension in accordance with 302.3.1(a). For pressure design, the stress values from Table A-1 are multiplied by the appropriate quality factor E (E c from Table A-

) and Table 302.3.3c.

However, the use of a material at a design minimum temperature

At temperatures where there are no stress values, the material may be used in

When the material has not been solution heat treated the minimum temperature shall be -20⁰F [-29⁰C] unless the material is

(40) The stress values for austenitic stainless steels in these Tables may not be applicable if the material has been given a final heat treatment other than that required by the material specification and any overriding requirements of this Code called for by Notes (30)

(51) Special P-Numbers SP-1, SP-2, and SP-3 of carbon steels are not included in P-No. 1 because of possible high carbon, high manganese combination which would require special consideration in qualification. Qualification of any high carbon, high manganese grade

(55) Pipe produced to this specification is not intended for high temperature service. The Stress values apply to either non-expanded or cold expanded material in the as-rolled, normalized, or normalized and tempered condition.
