The OrchestraThe Vienna Chamber of Orchestra founded in 1842 join the MAWOMA Contest for its first step.

The place This quest of excellency will continue in the heart of Vienna; the different steps of the competition will took place at the Musikverein and the Sofiensaal.

First step : Vienna

The Unfolded of the Competition

This Competition includes three finalists, selected throughout the applications.

It will be conducted as follows:

10th April morning : rehearsal for the first candidate, followed by the second candidate in the afternoon. The third candidate will have her session on April 11th morning.

The final concert with the three finalists will took place the same day, and will be follow by the jury deliberation. Only the Finale access will be open to the public.

ProgrammeConductor Frédéric Chaslin, President of the Jury choose a very rich musical programmation.The three finalists will choose among the following programme:

The first movement of one of the following symphonies: Mozart 31st, 38th or 41st

Haydn 100th, 101st or 104th Beethoven 1st, 4th or 7th

The first movement of one of the following concertos:Mozart violin concerto 3d or 5th

Haydn cello concerto 1st and 2d

Vanessa Benelli Mosell is a rising star on the international music scene, much praised for her virtuosity, her technical brilliance and for the sensitivity of her musical insight that she brings to her piano playing, as well as to her conducting and directing from thekeyboard.Vanessa is acclaimed for her passion, in equal measure, for the great classics of the repertory and her championing of the newest composers.

Recent and future highlights include her debut at La Scala Milan at the Mi-To Festival; a piano-conducting tour to China, performing at Xian Auditorium, Shanghai City Theater, Xiamen Performing Arts Center among other venues, the opening concerts…

This season, Vanessa will make her debut with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, as well as at the Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and The Orchestre National de France at Radio France; she will return to RTÉ in Ireland, festivals across France and Italy, return to Madrid and will make recital and concerto tours to China, the USA and South Korea including the Seoul Arts Center.

Vanessa Benelli Mosell began her comprehensive musical studies at three years old, learning piano, violin, choral singing, followed by composition, lyrical singing and conducting.At seven years old she was exceptionally admitted at the International Piano Academy in Imola, where she studied with Franco Scala.

She began studying conducting in 2015 with Luca Pfaff in Strasbourg, attending workshops all over the world including masterclasses by Lior Shambadal, Sandro Gorli and Ennio Nicotra among others.Vanessa was awarded the Elba Festival Prize by Yuri Bashmet, and more recently she has won the first Award of the Festival Pietrasanta as an outstanding young talent.She has been supported by the Keyboard Charitable Trust and in 2016 was appointed as a Steinway Artist.

Vanessa worked closely with the composer and he remains an important influence on Vanessa’s music making, encouraging her passion for contemporary music and her championing of composers of today as well as the great classics.She has worked with orchestras such as the Orchestre Philharmonique de Strasbourg, Münchner Symphoniker, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Berliner Sym-phoniker, the Zurich Chamber Orchestra, RTE Symphony Orchestra, Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Orchestra of Teatro Regio di Torino, and Orchestra del Teatro Comunale di Bologna.

She is already well travelled with tours to the North and South America, Spain, China, Israel and Turkey, as well as playing recitals at Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle, Auditorium de Radio France, the Glinka Festival in Smolensk, New York’s Lincoln Center, Berliner Philharmonie, Auditorium Manzoni in Bologna, Tonhalle Zurich, Auditorium du Louvre, Dublin National Concert Hall, Haifa Audito-rium, Harbin Grand Theater, Beijing NCPA, UNESCO Auditorium, Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, Palau de la Musica Catalana in Barcelona, London’s Royal Festival Hall, La Scala in Milano, Teatro Regio in Turin, London's Kings Place among others.

First step : Vienna

Described as 'a natural conductor with exciting ideas' by musicians of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja praising her 'totally clear gestures with great control of the score and orchestra', Johanna Malangré's electrifying musicality and natural leadership are quickly establishing her as one of the most interesting personalities in the young conductor's generation.

In summer 2017 she gained international attention as Conducting Fellow at the Lucerne Festival Academy where she worked with the Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, Heinz Holliger and Patricia Kopatchinskaja and conducted a final concert of Wolfgang Rihm's composition masterclass at the KKL Lucerne. She served as Assistant Conductor with the Bergische Symphoniker in 2016/2017 season, assisting music director Peter Kuhn and leading several family and benefit concerts aswell as the annual open-air gala. She recently gave her debut with the Süddeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz and is collaborating with Bern Symphonieorchester conducting in their series of educational concerts several times this season.

Having a great passion for opera, Malangré started her career working as Assistant Conductor at the Chamber Opera Cologne in productions of « Don Giovanni, My fair Lady, Cenerentola, Die Zauberflöte, Im weißen Rössl and Hänsel und Gretel. In the past seaon she conducted Dvořáks Rusalka at Pilsen Opera and worked with the Staatstheater Cottbus Orchestra.

She has worked with orchestras such as the Staatstheater Cottbus Orchestra, Musikcollegium Winterthur, Hungarian State Opera Orchestra, Nürnberger Symphoniker, Lucerne Festival Academy Orchestra, Bergische Symphoniker, Järvi Academy Orchestra, Bern Symphony Orchestra, Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Bad Reichenhaller Philharmoniker, Carlsbad Symphony Orchestra, Hradec Symphony Orchestra and others.

In masterclasses she received valuable advice from Bernard Haitink, Paavo Järvi, Heinz Holliger, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Nicolas Pasquet and Leonid Grin. Born in 1989, Johanna Malangré has studied in Köln, Nürnberg and Mozarteum Salzburg and holds a degree in Conducting, Choral Conducting and Organ. She is recipient of the 2015 Richard Wagner Prize and is currently studying in the renowned class of Prof. Johannes Schlaefli at Zürich Hochschule der Künste.

Simone Menezes is a Brazilian conductor widely recognized for her artistic leadership, creativity and innovation.

Simone began her conducting career in Brazil before moving to France to study at the École Normale de Musique de Paris where she received the Diplôme Superieur de Direction d’Orchestre. She also studied with Colin Metters in London and specialized in con-temporary music as a resident with Remix Ensemble (Portugal) and Ensemble Multilater-ale (Paris).

Back in Brazil, Simone became the Principal Conductor of the Unicamp Symphony Orchestra from 2008 to 2012. During this time, she released two albums of Brazilian Contemporary Music, one of which was nominated by the Music Critics Association of São Paulo for “Best Brazilian Musical Project” in 2011. In 2012, Marin Alsop invited her to the Campos do Jordão Music Festival. Simone founded the Camerata Latino Americana, a chamber orchestra which has attracted the attention of the International Society for the Performing Arts in New York and the Association of British Orchestras in London, due to the dynamic and creative quality of its output. Simone also created and conducts the Villa-Lobos Project, an international project dedicated to performances of Villa Lobos across the world, a project supported by Brazilian arts foundation, Funarte.

In 2013 and 2014 she joined the Parnu Music Festival and Järvi Academy as student of Paavo Järvi, Neeme Järvi, Leonid Grin and Gennady Rozhdestvensky. It was during this time that she was invited by the Orchestre de Paris to participate in the Assistant Conductor Competition 2014 at Salle Pleyel. Simone recorded her 2015 disc Suite Brasileira Contemporanea with Camerata Latino Americana and previously recorded Novos Universos Sonoros with Canto Diviso in 2009.

In the 2018/19 Simone will join Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Osaka Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre du Pays de la Loire and Opéra National de Lorraine. She is currently working on a project, Demos, created by the Philharmonie de Paris and Orchestre d'Auvergne which is an initiative aiming to give access to musical and orchestral education for children from less fortunate communities. As well as educational projects, Simone continues her dedication to contemporary music, having premiered over twenty works.

Other recent engagements include performances with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre National de Lille, Orquesta Sinfônica Nacional in Rio de Janeiro, Orchestre d’Auvergne, Orchestre Pasdeloup, and Orchestre national d'Île-de-France, amongst others. Simone also conducts regularly at the Sala São Paulo and continues to assist Paavo Järvi alongside orchestras including the Frankfurt Orchestra and Staatskapelle Berlin. She has collaborated with other conductors such as Thomas Adés, Ole Edward Antonsen, Antonio Meneses, and Sonia Rubinsky.

MAWOMA, the very first itinerant contest dedicated to Women Conductor will start at the Muskiverein the April 10th and 11th

Major event in the Classical Music History, MAWOMA allows the highlight of the tomorow’s Maestra. This Excellence contest will travel throughout every continent. The purpose is for it to became a reference in terms of music and equality.

In 2019, only 4% of the Conductor profession is represented by women. This alarming number reminds us that a global awareness is necessary, like in any other professional sector. Classical Music, and the Maestra fonction need to develop a World Wide Dynamic.

The pianist Clémence Guerrand has founded this scale contest to prove that Music has no gender.
