“Do this in remembrance of Me,” Jesus commanded as He instituted the
Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper. When we receive His body and blood, we
remember and proclaim His death. His death was the only sacrifice needed as
He brings about the new covenant promised through Jeremiah. As the writer of
Hebrews explains, now there is no need for sacrifice. God remembers His
steadfast love and, for Jesus’ sake, forgets our sins. We are therefore able to
come into His presence and also move one another to love and good works.
PRELUDE “Deep Within”
WELCOME

OPENING HYMN “When You Woke That Thursday Morning”
4
INVOCATION In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION
We take this time to examine ourselves through God’s righteous law. The Ten
Commandments, the moral code of the Kingdom, reveal to us the gravity of our sin,
for they call us to love God with our whole being and our neighbors as ourselves.
You shall have no other gods.
We confess that we put other things above our fear, love, and
trust in God.
You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.
We confess that we do not call upon it in every trouble, pray,
praise, and give thanks.
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
We confess that we do not always hold it sacred and gladly
hear and learn God's Word.
Honor your father and your mother.
We confess that we do not always honor them, serve and obey
them, love and cherish them.
You shall not commit adultery.
We confess that we are not pure in all we say and do, and we do
not always love and honor our spouses.
You shall not steal.
We confess we do not always help our neighbors to improve
and protect their possessions and income.
You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.
We confess we do not always defend our neighbors, or speak
well of them, or explain everything in the kindest way.
You shall not covet.
We confess that we do not always help our neighbors keep their
property and family relationships.
We have examined ourselves according to God’s law. Our King has paid for the
sins of His subjects. In the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I
therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of
the Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Holy God, source of all love, on the night of his betrayal, Jesus gave his disciples
a new commandment: To love one another as he had loved them. By your Holy
Spirit write this commandment in our hearts; through your Son, Jesus Christ our
Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, on God, now and forever.
Amen.
WORD
OLD TESTAMENT READING Exd 12:1-4[5-10]11-14.
The Lord promises a new covenant.
The days are surely coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant
with the house of Israel and the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant that I
made with their ancestors when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the
land of Egypt—a covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, says the
Lord. But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those
days, says the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts;
and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one
another, or say to each other, “Know the Lord,” for they shall all know me, from the
least of them to the greatest, says the Lord; for I will forgive their iniquity, and
remember their sin no more.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
EPISTLE 1 Cor 11:23-26
We may approach God, confident of forgiveness for Jesus’ sake.
For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on
the night when he was betrayed took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke
it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In
the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new
covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For
as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until
he comes.
This is the Word of the Lord.
Thanks be to God.
HOLY GOSPEL John 13:1-17, 31b-35. Jesus institutes the Lord’s Supper.
The Holy Gospel according to John the thirteenth chapter.
Glory to You, O Lord.
Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to
depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world,
he loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the
heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father
had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going
6
back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel,
tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the
disciples' feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He
came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus
answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will
understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him,
“If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord,
not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” Jesus said to him, “The one who
has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And
you are clean, but not every one of you.” For he knew who was to betray him; that
was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”
When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place,
he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? You call me Teacher
and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have
washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an
example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. Truly, truly, I say to
you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one
who sent him. If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them.
When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is
glorified in him. If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and
glorify him at once. Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek
me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you
cannot come.’ A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as
I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that
you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
This is the Gospel of the Lord.
Praise to You, O Christ.
SERMON
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Psalm 25:6
Let us pray for the whole people of God in Christ Jesus and for all people in their
various needs.
Heavenly Father, we pray for the nations of the world. Where their leaders care
for their people, give them supportive citizens; where they seek their own power,
frustrate their efforts and shorten their rule.
Remember Your mercy, O LORD, and Your steadfast love, for
they have been from of old. Lord Jesus, we pray for those who are often forgotten in society: people who are
imprisoned or exiled from their homelands, people with long-term illnesses in
hospitals and nursing homes, and people who live in poverty with their basic
needs unmet. Assure them of Your presence and move the powers that be to care
for them with dignity and justice.
7
Remember Your mercy, O LORD, and Your steadfast love, for
they have been from of old.
O Holy Spirit, we pray for the Church wherever people gather around Word and
Sacrament. Where it is persecuted, give courage; where it is growing, open doors
of opportunity; where it is asleep, awaken clergy and laity to lead with zeal.
Remember Your mercy, O LORD, and Your steadfast love, for
they have been from of old.
Lord over all, we pray for those who tend fields and flocks, who make and
distribute goods, who protect and defend communities and nations, who heal and
care for the ill and dying, who teach and administer our schools, who serve in all
levels of government, and all who provide necessary services. Give them eyes to
see their callings as ministries from Your gracious hand.
Remember Your mercy, O LORD, and Your steadfast love, for
they have been from of old.
Triune God, we pray for people who do not know Jesus as Lord, who wonder
about the truth of Your Word, and whose faith has grown cold. Grant them sure
faith and remind them of Your great love, promised for ages and fulfilled in the
life, death, and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Remember Your mercy, O LORD, and Your steadfast love, for
they have been from of old.
These and any other things You would have us ask of You this day, grant to us
for the sake of the bitter sufferings and death of Your Son, Jesus Christ, in whose
name we pray.
Amen.
HYMN “When Twilight Comes” Daniela Cruz, viola LORD’S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9–13)
Our Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth
as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory
forever and ever. Amen.
