This season in Europe is not providing too much killer wave conditions which were quite usual for this part of a year in past sessions. It might be effect of changing climate or just a different year. Anyways for 25th of August for shores of Poland there was a great wind foretasted. 40 knots from the west. Polish MauiSails crew picked the best spot for the day - Ustka, the venue where the shoreline lines up with the wind direction and offer side-off conditions.

Bogo, MauiSails marketing guy was there too to score good waves but also to film and photos this session.

Long windless month on BonaireAugust has been a long windless month on Bonaire. Its been one month straight that I have not been able to windsurf. If I have to compare the wind conditions from last year to this year I can say that the Hurricanes season really did affect the wind in the Caribbean this year, really warm, at times cloudy, some heavy rain at times, but for the last two weeks of the month is like super hot and not a breath of wind. Its not fun not being able to windsurf for such a long time while Sylt is about 3 weeks away:(.

Well, This month I have spent much of my days fishing with my friend (Jeager Sint Jago). We catch mostly Tuna and snapper. Its great fun to have time again to fish. I missed fishing, so these last couple of weeks I am enjoying it. I am also having to spend time riding my ATV Yamaha Raptor 700 and just enjoying and having fun while theres no wind on the island.

Best thing so far that happen is having my own freestyle signature fin by Maui Ultra Fins; sizes are 15, 16, 17cm in production.Pretty happy about this. :)

Well I dont know what else to say but I am really hoping for the wind to get back on the island so that I can get back on my windsurf gears and get ready for Sylt.

August on tour and back homeWe finish Fuerteventura on the 28th of July and as Turkey was starting on the 8th i stayed in Fuerte to watch the freestyle. The trip to Turkey was the classic nightmare story that this days we, PROS, face every time we hit an airport. I was travelling with Arnon and Kevin, so we arrived to the airport with 8 bags between Arnon and me, but suddenly we see Kevin had 14 more...! Obviously the woman in charge of the check in started freaking out. This same women did the check in to us the year before and she was over it from the very begining,

We were flying to Germany and then from Germany straight to Izmir. The lady told us we were only allowed to take 12 from the 22 bags..so 10 had to stayed!! but with who? luckily some guys from the PWA crew were still on the island and we left them with them. We manage to squiz some more tags and some extra bags in the end as the manager started to get a little bit more friendly. We were the last guys to get in the plane, off course we made it delay!

We got to Germany and we got our conection no problem. When we got in Izmir it took ages for the bags to come out, almost 2 hrs...and in the end it all came but my fin bag...nightmare.

For our bad fortune, we got to Alacati and the wind disappeared for 6 days straight, it was extra hot, sweating all day. We rent some bikes and all our activity was biking, for 6 straight days. They found my bag in Germany with the bags that miss their tags.


Luckily my bag had some inscriptions of an old event in Poland, so they identified it pretty quick and sent it to Turkey.

Finally the wind came back, the day before the event. I sailed and tuned all day with Arnon. I had pretty good speed on my 8.4. We raced two eliminations the first day, I was 7 after this two. The next day we did one more that put me on 6th on the results but on the last elimination i got stuck on my small gear and was out on the first heat. That put me back to 13th.

The way back out from Turkey was the longest combination of flights I do during the year. I did Izmir-Istanbul-London-New York-Buenos Aires, so i was dead when i arrived to Argentina...that was a hell of a trip!!!

August came and went

August came and went, all of the euro summer I have been travelling and finally have been spending a couple weeks in Holland.There were excellent conditions at all the national events this month, with Maui Sails coming out on top at every single one of them.The wind really kicked in after returning from the PWA in Turkey with several fronts hitting the coastline bringing gale force winds at times. Looks like the wind started seeking revenge from the slow winter and spring here.

318 people entered the Mission, Final Edition.22 and 23 August on the Brouwersdam in the South of Holland, and there was a nice breeze picking up to 18 knot gusts on Saturday and the morning of Sunday.After 5 races I ended up winning the pro fleet on the TR-6 8.4 XT in front of Neil Pryde/JP rider Adriaan v Rijsselberghe and several other top National racers.

The BBQ and party on Saturday night were a great success as always with a lot of cool prizes in the tombola, like11 Fanatic New Wave Twin and a brand new Maui Sails Loco!Thanks to the remarkable job by Herman van den Berg over the years for putting up this massive event again, the breeding ground for new talent in the sport and promising for the years to come.

Monday straight after the Mission the wind picked up to over 40 knots. Clocking speeds of over 44 knots / 80 km per hour at a spot called da curve that was a real adventure.5 km out to sea you can either reach the outside channels by boat (if you have one) or hiking! We took the last option (more fun!) and started making our way out crossing mussel and oyster banks, sandbars, sometimes sailing for 100 m then walking again when a big squals passed over and heavy pooring ra n. The wind reached 48 knots at times!! The good news was that the sky cleared after and it was perfect sunshine for the rest of the afternoon, but for real record condition the wind remained too square...


When we had to walk the first 100 meters on the way back, it was almost impossible to get into the wind, blowing the sail right down.It was a true adventure that I wouldnt have wanted to do with any other sail then my smallest 5.1 TR-6, while being the fastest sailor at the spot that day.

On the last weekend of August, there were the Windsurfing Nationals in Hoorn, 4 Formula races on Saturday and some old fashioned downwind slalom racing on Sunday. It was a tight battle all the way around the course that Dennis Littel ended up winning on his slightly bigger sail 7.6 TR-5. On a 7.0 with the wind going up and down I was slightly underdone. Nevertheless a very fun race, it seems that the quality and standards is coming up and them events are well planned outside of world cup competition pushing up the level of competing.

On the last day of August we sailed in IJmuiden - West of Amsterdam in some of the best Wave sailing side offshore Starboard tack conditions you can get in Holland on the 4.2 Legend; loving it!

For September Im planning to do the WATERZ downwind race in Denmark, followed by the PWA wave in Klittmoler and the Sylt Grand Slam, so lots of action to be looking forward to. Look forward to write my next Maui Monthly, good winds to all!!

The free-ride sails are done and off to production. We put a lot of focus on the new 2011 Titan-GS sail line and there should be quite a few happy freeride/slalom sailors out there once they try one. The 7 batten, 2-3 cam Titan-GS offers great, race-like speed and performance but with lighter weight and more forgiving handling. Our focus at the loft is now fully on race sails and we are making some very exciting progress. Weve been having some very positive test results with our recent prototypes that incorporate a lower aspect ratio, modified luff curve and our own version of the recessed clew. The new prototypes are showing excellent range, stability and balance with a noticeably softer and lighter feel. I love working on new stuff and its been a while since I felt this excited to see each prototype arrive from the factory.

Its been a pretty fun month for sailing considering that its still August. Ive been getting tuned up on the slalom gear in preparation for some more race sail testing with Phil. We even had a couple of small north swells this month that made for some fun summer wave sessions. I even had a decent wave sailing session on the south side during a nice south swell. Ive been spending a fair bit of time on the 2011 Ghost-XT and am getting a bit spoiled with the ridiculous light weight and handling.

Just getting back from US Nationals at the end of the July, the final race of the Gorge Series was held the first weekend of August. On Saturday it was gusting into the low 40s, and I found myself scrounging into the demo van to pull out the Switch 5.6, after getting blasted off the water right before the first race on my bigger slalom gear. Barely making it to the line and lit on 5.6, I snuck in and won my first heat and was stoked with the Switch! I had one of my best racing days, sailing all heats on the 5.6 Switch, and ending up 2nd overall, 1st in Mens open. Ingrid did slalom as well after winning at Nationals, and lit up on her 4.2 Legend she finished in 1st for womens. Sunday was a little lighter, and I had a great time on my TR-6 7.0. I was really happy winning the Mens Open for the weekend, and Ingrid, having competed in the prior races of the series, took her win to also claim the Gorge Cup for 2010 Womens!

August from Casey&Ingrid Only a few days later a shipment rolled into Gorge Surf Shop of some fresh new 2011 Legends, and just like that it seemed the wind picked up for the rest of the month. We had some great days all over, from the Hatch out to Arlington, me on 3.5-4.2 and Ingrid on 2.9-3.7. It was great to see all the local guys out there on the new sails; Mike V, Tim, Swiss Swell, Royn, Scott and Roxanne out there having a blast. It seemed to me that there were almost more good days in August than any month yet!

August is the gone month... except for the crew here in Maui, because August is one of the months you dont want to miss here. The water is getting hurricane warm, the evening air is like a caress, and the whole place is hopping with action. There are lots of visitors of all kinds, coming here to enjoy the best it gets for Hawaii, leading up to the Labor Day Holiday in the beginning of September, when it all slows to normal again. August is the great time to be on Maui. Development is finished on the Freeride ranges of Aloha, Pursuit, and Titan-GS (new look with wide sleeve for cams off rigging). The Titan-GS has been a major focus for Art and the results will surely be making the fast cruising crowd happy. He has been able to retain the tension and feel that makes for solid, comfortable riding while keeping the slightly wider sleeve smooth and clean looking. In addition, the latest TR protos have been arriving almost daily so we can test out some of the very different materials, outlines, and shaping ideas we have been generating based on feedback from riders and our own testing. So far, the results are generally positive and unique so I expect us to be able to have another great season out in the real world. There also have been very satisfying reports from new users in the Gorge, with my favorite quote coming from Mike van Sisseren, working out of Gorge Surf Shop. He wrote us to say,

"MauiSails are the ones that talk to you all the time." Im sure he wasnt meaning like a back seat driver :), but instead meaning you always get great feedback, know what is coming next. He wanted us to know that the Legends are perfect for the Gorge; rangey yet still powerful with control. His observation has been that last year, the first year the store had the brand, he knew everyone who was sailing on MauiSails. This year he only klnows half of the people and there are twice as many. All happy so far.

Barrys August...Not fade away August was also the month after the rig went back in Cornelia, and we managed to take a break from the mad rebuilding and rest a bit. But we still worked to get all the deck winches removed, cleaned, lubed, and put back in a better place, so we have staysl sheet winches now, track and blocks for same, and re-located jib sheet winches. I jury rigged a topping lift and outhaul and we had a great inaugural sail with the new rig, and all was setting up well, nice straight mast, steady under load. We were joined on the trip by the Robert Stadler family (Monika, Michael, Michelle) from the Munich area. It was their first experience sailing a larger craft, even though they have been windsurfing for many years. There was nothihng to fear and a fine time was had by all. After a busy July travelling and doing some regattas it was time to reflect and regroup in August.

Looking back on the racing, US Nationals and Hawaii States, really happy with my results, of course its always good to win, but everything needs to be working well to win regattas. The sails felt great and performed in all conditions and in all aspects around the course.

Starting work on the race sails again, means discussion, gathering feedback and figuring out which direction to go in. Its a time to let loose on some designs and try different stuff out, so the development is fun and more relaxed. No deadlines to meet and you can be a little more creative with your thinking and aggressive with the designs.

So that is it for me, short and sweet for August. Oh I almost forgot, we added the GMC van to our quiver this month and the beautiful attention seeking graphic to go along with it.
