Greetings MMBA Members –

We made it to June! We survived the Stay- at -Home order and have now moved onto the Stay Safe Minnesota order. Summer is on the horizon and building is booming. Amidst all the change and uncertainty, I am so pleased our industry has remained busy, it has really helped in these uncertain times. I love summer for many reasons: it is our busy season, warm days, enjoying the lakes, and everything about our beautiful area. We still have much to be thankful for.

My heart goes out to all the graduating seniors. The year may not have ended how they planned; however, it will never be forgotten. Congratulations to the class of 2020! The Mid Minnesota Builders Association had our scholarship committee reviewed all the appli-cations, there were several to look over and all were impressive. MMBA has awarded 3, $1,000.00 scholarships to graduating seniors going onto higher education and The Builders Group (TBG) is giving out 2, $1,000.00 scholarships to graduating seniors going into the trades. I am please to announce the following MMBA Scholarship Recipients: Hayden J. Boelter, Lachlan K. Larson, and Naarah R. Neemann. The TBG Scholarship Recipients are Keenan A. Dahl and Nicolas E. Lanham. Congratulations, we wish you the best of luck as you transition into your next stage.

We are hopeful to be able to host our annual golf tournament at the Legacy Courses at Cragun’s. The tournament is set for Tuesday, July 21st. Golf courses are open, and we are working with the staff at the Legacy and staying tuned to government orders. Colleen will be getting information out as soon as possible. I am crossing my fingers we will be able to hold this event as things are sounding hopeful. More information to follow.

Our last few months have been filled with Zoom meetings and phone calls. Technology is truly amazing; however, I am so looking forward to the day we can all meet again. I hope you have a great start to summer.

2020 National Electrical Code adoption delayed

Adoption of the 2020 National Electrical Code (NEC) has been delayed and it will not be effective in Minnesota on July 1, 2020, as anticipated. The Board of Electricity received 25 valid requests for hearing regarding the adoption of the 2020 NEC. That hearing has been resched-uled to Aug. 19, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Tell us about You and Your CompanyBrainerd General Rental was founded in 1993 in the former Taco Towne building in Baxter on Highway 371. Owned and operated since 2002 by Steve and Maureen Mau our mission is to provide great equipment at a fair price with exceptional service.

Why did you first get involved with MMBA?The original owners of Brainerd General Rental, Steve and Louise Aslakson, became involved with the MMBA when they opened the store. I still remember one of the very first events I ever attended with Steve Aslakson after we purchased the store was an MMBA meeting at Ernie’s on Gull. Steve saw the value of membership in the beginning and we believe that value still exists today.

Are there any causes to which Brainerd General Rental volunteers or donates?A few years ago, we decided that we could do more than provide financial resources to support area non-profits. We began our Rent to the Max campaign. The intention was to not only raise money but create awareness around area non-profits. Our staff wear logoed clothing, we run newspaper and radio ads highlighting the organization and we match up to $2500 in donations. Thus far we have partnered with Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity, The Salvation Army, LAPS and Smiles for Jake.

What might someone be surprised to know about Brainerd General Rental?The average tenure of our staff is over 10 years with three of team named Mike!

At one time or another my wife and kids have all worked at Brainerd General Rental. My son Austin is working full time for us after graduation from Bemidji State University in 2018.

What do you think will change about Brainerd General Rental over the next five years?As a result of the Covid 19 virus we moved our transaction process online. Contracts are signed online; payments are online and we actually closed our store in the middle of March to the public. It has created a safer environment for our staff and our customers. Technology will continue to allow us to service, track and maintain equipment more effective than ever before.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining MMBA?Investing in your community is critical to creating a culture of teamwork. Now more than ever we know we are all in this together. The MMBA cultivates that message of teamwork and working together for the betterment of the community. Get engaged and see how far you go personally and professionally.

If you weren’t working at Brainerd General Rental, what would you be doing instead?I would love to be announcing baseball games at a minor league ballpark. “Now batting….”

What is your favorite ice cream flavor?Strawberry on a warm summer day.

I’m often asked what sets us apart from other folks that do what we do. I am completely biased here, but our staff is phenomenal! They not only know what they are talking about and how to take care of the equipment, but they are genuinely nice people that care about each other. At the end of the day, they make the difference.

MN DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND INDUSTRY ____________________________________________

The 2020 Minnesota Residential Code is effective March 31, 2020. The 2020 Minnesota Residential Code adopts the 2018 edition of the International Residential Code (IRC), with amendments. The IRC governs new construction of one- and two-family homes and buildings with three or more townhouses, provided the structure is not more than three stories above grade.

The following IRC provisions are changed by Minnesota amendments:

Administration and Definitions

• Adds a definition of transient and directs code users to the IBC for requirements for dwellings intended for transient use

Sections R 310.1 and R310.6 provisions for emergency escape and rescue openings for new and existing basements

• Emergency escape and rescue openings are required in new basements and bedrooms created in existing basements unless the entire basement area, all portions of the means of egress to the level of exit discharge, and all areas on the level of exit discharge are protected with an automatic sprinkler system

Sections R314 and R315 Smoke Alarms and Carbon Monoxide Detectors

• Existing homes are permitted to be equipped with battery-powered smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors that are not interconnected unless alterations or repairs result in the removal of interior wall or ceiling finishes

• Hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms are not required in existing homes where the basement or attic provides access to the hardwiring

• New homes continue to be required to have hardwired, interconnected smoke alarms

• Clarifies that 5,000 psi concrete is not required for post footings decks or porches, wood foundations, slab-on-grade foundation walls and footings for floating slabs

The 2020 Minnesota Residential Code also includes these significant changes from the 2018 IRC:

• Section R301.2.1 Wind design criteria require dwellings to be constructed using ultimate design wind speed (Vult) instead of basic wind speed (Vasd). Table R301.2.1.3 provides conversions from Vult to Vasd. The actual design wind loads will be equal or slightly less using ultimate wind design speed instead of basic wind speed.

• Section R324 Solar Energy Systems adds new provisions solar energy systems. Roof-mounted solar PV systems must allow for roof access, including access pathways from the lowest roof edge to the ridge and setbacks at the ridge.

• Section R507 Exterior Decks reorganizes and clarifies requirements for decks, including requirements for materials and fastener and fastener connections.

• Appendix Q addresses tiny houses by providing certain allowances for homes less than 400 square feet in size.

COVID-19 Update From the GovernorAt the Governor’s Press Briefing Thursday, the ques-tion of reopening the economy was asked, and the answer was, “The decision to re-open has to be carefully considered based on where we are in the epidemic. When we re-open certain sectors of the economy, we have to make sure we do it in a responsible manner.” It was also stated one of the goals is to ensure preparation of the healthcare system.

During the Governor’s Press Briefing on Wednes-day the Governor said, “what we’re doing is working”. Minnesota has the lowest infection rate in the country.
