Education is one of the key words of our time. A man without education, many of us believe,

is an unfortunate victim of adverse circumstances deprived of one of the greatest opportunities

of our century. 6.1 ______________ Education, with its cycles of instruction so carefully

worked out, punctuated text-books those purchasable wells of wisdom what would

civilization be like without its benefits?

So much is certain: that we would have doctors and preachers, lawyers and defendants,

marriages and births but our spiritual outlook would be different. We would lay less stress

on facts and figures and more on good memory, on applied psychology, and on a capacity of a

man to get along with his fellow-citizens. 6.2 __________________. Among the people

whom we like to call savages all knowledge inherited is shared by all. It is taught to every

member of the tribe so that in this respect everybody is equally equipped for life.

6.3 ____________________. In primitive cultures the obligation to seek and to

receive the traditional instruction is binding to all. There are no illiterates if the term can be

applied to peoples without a script while our own compulsory attendance became law in

Germany in 1642, in France in 1806, and in England in 1876, and is still non-existent in a

number of civilized nations. This shows how long it was before we deemed it necessary to

make sure that all our children could share in the knowledge accumulated by the happy few

    during the past centuries.

Education in the wilderness is not a matter of monetary means.6.4 ________________

There is none of the hurry which, in our society, often stops the full development of a growing

personality. There, a child grows up under ever-present attention of his parents. 6.5_________________ No necessity of making a living away from home results in neglect of

children. And no father is confronted with his inability to but an education for his child.

It is the ideal condition of the equal start which only our most progressive forms of

There was a note on the desk informing me that Mr. Summer, journalist, would be

arriving at night. I was to show him around the factory, allowing him to see anything and

    anyone.

Youd think, I said to Sid, who shared the room with me and who was resting his

feet on the desk, that I had nothing better to do.

Mr. Summer turned out to be plump, and he wore an expensive grey suit. As soon as

he was in the room he smiled charmingly at both of us and shook us by the hand. Sid,

courteous, offered Summer his seat and himself sat on a tin can in the corner of the room.

    Summer immediately offered cigarettes.

I hope, Summer began, that I am not putting you out at all. He looked at both of

us steadily, in turn. My idea is to look at industry from the other side. One has the

managements point of view, but I want to know how the worker feels about industry.

Exhausted, said Sid. Most of the time, he added.

Summer laughed. His laugh was steady and soft, establishing mutual sympathy and

understanding. He behaved and looked like a visitor from a distant place where elegance was

not the mark of a traitor.

Above the noise of the cranes as they passed the window we could hear a wail.

Summer jumped in his seat and dropped his cigarette. He was going to stamp on it but I

picked it up and gave it to him and he put it back in his mouth. The door was kicked open and

Lennie came in swearing. Summer could not hide his astonishment at Lennies appearance, at

the red hair to the shoulders, the lens-less spectacles, the red, long nose, the black, heavy

    moustache.
