The thoughtful confluence of interdependent factors into a cohesive tectonic language.
The way that an architectural idea evolves in response to light, shadow, wind, rain, sound, diurnal use, site forces, and technical constraints is one of iteration and negotiation. By utilizing multiple analog and digital
mediums to test ideas throughout the design process, each has a unique story it can reveal.

EUGENE CITY HALL
A growing downtown civic district demanded
an updated city hall. A new structure in
the heart of a growing downtown which took
the needs of the city managers office and
those of the city counsel and married them
with the beauty of the natural landscape
of the pacific northwest. The resultant
design sought to abstract natural metaphors
present in the landscape into a cohesive
building design that's impact and abilities
were larger than the sum of its parts. A
district hub for stormwater treatment, an
energy production center, and a step towards
a new future for Eugene.

LIVE + WORK
The live+work building type is gaining momentum as more sections
of the population desire smaller dwellings, are moving to cities,
and are working remotely or in an entrepreneurial status. This
working and living design used tesselation and repetition to create
unique clusters of stacked apartments that dealt with the site
topography, natural daylighting, privacy, and access/connection
to outdoor space. Double height spaces make the apartments feel
large, while their foot print remained small and fully accessible.

Tesselations of an L-shaped floor plan created different configurations. The resultant adjacencies created variation within the units (# of bd rms, accessible, live/work, live/studio, etc.) allowed a private garden, and optimized the construction process.

LIGHTRAIL STATION
Situated in an existing freight railroad corridor, this light
rail station tried to reconcile the lost ecology of the prairie
grassland it resided within and propose a precedent for public
art-enhanced stations for Minneapolis' new public transit
system. The program included spaces for art installation,
ecological learning, performance and art education facilities.

A kinetic, metal skin wrapped the simple rectilinear building to create shading and passive fenestration benefits while giving the facade a sculptural skin, optimized to the climate.

MANY NATIONS RESTORATION PROJECT
This project aims to restore a building, a riparian ecology, and a displaced culture simultaneously. By harnessing the benefits of the site (river setback allowance, historical art deco structure, location within a larger development) and integrating native american culture a balance can be struck and stacked benefits arise.

An entry to the gallery, a habitat for wetland species, and a walking timeline of Pacific Northwest Native culture.

Target ecologies and corresponding species were identified using native patterns of movement within the landscape. The site turns into a didactic natural museum of useful plants, perfectly suited to the site, embedded in the history of the kalapuyan land management strategies.

A different set of constraints, concerns, and opportunities exist at this larger scale of design. By creating interdisciplinary teams drawing from landscape architecture, planning, business, and architecture, a multi-faceted approach to design thinking emerges. The resultant proposals seek to stack environmental, economic, and social benefits to create feasibility in development.

PORTLAND: GATEWAY ECODISTRICT
Gateway is located outside of the
Portland, Oregon metro area and is
home to a diverse group of people and
has a burgeoning medical, residential,
retail presence. Working with an
interdisciplinary team of landscape
architecture, business, architecture,
and planning students, this project
aimed to make incremental, catalytic
design interventions over time that
had multiple simultaneous benefits-
ecological, social, and economic.
By creating a series of nodal design moves,
within a larger conceptual framework,
the scope of the project considered the
timeline of the real world and designed
for flexibility and resiliency over time.

the agricultural, ecological,
and civic roots of this charged
site. The deserted 9 acre
Detroit Tiger's baseball stadium
site allowed the design to give
this unique part of Detroit's
history and equal playing field
with its exciting future as a
hub of agricultural innovation.

GERALD D. HINES COMPETITION MINNEAPOLIS: ULI 2013
an interdisciplinary team of graduate students drawing from landscape
architecture, architecture, and business had two weeks to create a
comprehensive master plan for a new stadium district in Minneapolis, MN.
By tapping into the local culture, a sensitive design proposal that aligned
the ecological and recreational goals of a progressive culture with the
economic goals of sustainable development was realized.

creating equity and opportunity through design is a primary tenant of meaningful projects.
Through an inclusive design process, I have had the opportunity to help address social, economic, and environmental factors at a range of scales. The design process consistently utilized local knowledge of climatic phenomenon, local material selection, and traditional building practices to bring a layer of ownership to each project.

EKIALO KIONA HIV/AIDS CLINIC
Located in the "hot zone" of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Africa, Mfangano
island is a community of fishermen and subsistence farmers. introduction
of a non-native fish (nile perch) in 1950 and a foreign fishing industry
have created a drifting source of income and a highway for hiv
transmission. The Ekialo Kiona Community Center has created a cyber
testing program and a multitude of other community activities all
aimed at creating healthy, lifestyles for the people of Mfangano while
increasing awareness.

AQUAPONIC ALCHEMYSOLAR-POWERED AGRICULTURE
By winning a first place prize in the UC Berkeley "Big Ideas
Competition" a project seeking to create an unprecedented
type of agricultural system in rural Kenya found its funding
source. Leading a team of three architecture and landscape
architecture students coming from UPenn, and University of
Oregon, we traveled to Mfangano Island in Lake Victoria to
build a structure with local artisans. Using local materials
and labor, this system produces native tilapia, fresh greens,
and fruiting vegetables year-round in a semi-closed loop
system powered completely by solar energy and constructed
under budget.

KIBERA GIRLS SOCCER ACADEMYSAFEHOUSE
Located in the second largest slum in the
world, Kibera girls soccer academy sought
a design for a dormitory that was both an
extension of the existing school and a safe
haven for 60 girls who had unsafe living
conditions at home. During the summer of 2012
on-site visits and focus sessions with the
girls and administration allowed the design
to evolve in an organic way to address the
climatic, economic, and social contexts that
defined the area. Fundraising schematics
were created and the building is scheduled
for early 2013 ground breaking.

Organic Health Response Project Designer (2009-Present)- Created the design and advised in the construction of a HIV treatment facility and community center on a rural island in Lake Victoria, Kenya. - Directed the design and construction of a biodynamic aquaponic farming system for developing populations with an interdisciplinary team. - Wrote grant proposals for several sustainable initiatives and secured funding to implement them.
Moki Design Collective Founder (2008-present)- Facilitated inclusive design visioning sessions and created a schematic design set for the Kibera Girls Soccer Academy in Kibera Slums, Kenya during the summer of 2012. - Designed a guest house in Rusk County, WI with plans to build in 2013.- Created logos, merchandise, and promotional material for the music industry.
Universal Designers and Consultants Technical Coordinator (2008-2012)- Surveyed many building types and created detailed reports giving clients a managed list of problems and universal design solutions.- Created a data organization system for the company’s new website which required the coordinated organization of 30+ years of media and data. - Gained an in-depth knowledge of ANSI, ADA-BAAG, ADAAG and UBC codes.
Watermark Initiative LLC Research and Technology Associate (Summer 2010) - Designed graphic press sets used in client meetings.- Researched water poverty in specific locations throughout Africa and proposed agricultural solutions.
