One of Britain’s most highly respected industrial designers, Matthew Hilton has three decades of experience designing for a broad range of high profile manufacturers. In 2007, he started his own brand, Matthew Hilton Ltd, as a place he could have complete creative control. Working primarily in solid wood - American black walnut and American white oak - Hilton pushes the boundaries of the material, creating sculptural designs with an elegant simplicity that belies the complex engineering. He has received numerous awards throughout his career including being named a Royal Designer for Industry in 2005 and Designer of the Year at the British Design Awards in 2008. ‘Hilton has a genius for contemporary wooden design [approach-ing] his designs as much as a sculptor as a furniture designer’, Financial Times How To Spend It.

Fin Dining Chair is a solid wood chair with a unique shape that demands complex joinery and a great many parts. Yet the result is tranquil, the backrest emerging from the legs as a fin from the sea.

Light Extending Table

Interested in the idea of “impossible lightness”, Matthew Hilton finds ingenious ways of working with wood to achieve his desired form. The Light Extending Table has a tabletop made from engineered solid wood: an advanced material that harnesses the beauty, strength and durability of solid wood, while increasing the design possibilities when used as a planar material.

This innovative dining table extends with ease and elegance, offering three possible lengths. Set upon sculptural legs, the tabletop opens effortlessly and cradles the two leaves in a fabric-lined compartment when not in use.

Welles Table

Welles table makes generous use of solid wood with an elegantly simple form. The tabletop, detailed with a central divide and angled edges, is set upon cast iron legs. This table is quietly functional while remaining approachable and appealing to the senses.

Orson desk, made in rich hardwood and cast iron, simply and quietly performs the task required, while remaining approachable and appealing to the senses. Three solid wood drawers with dovetail joinery provide ample storage for desk accessories, while three small compartments at the back of the desk provide an efficient and attractive cable management system. Accessories designed to complement the desk include two storage trays and a pencil holder which are available separately.

Manta is a dining chair suitable for domestic and contract applications. The innovative use of a multi directional curved plywood molding for the combined back and arm rest give the chair a strong sculptural element distinguishing it from the many plywood chairs in the market. Surprisingly this beautiful chair can be stacked.

The slender body is raised upon timber legs which benefit from the structural integrity of long grain to long grain joinery. Kimble Windsor Chair

Kimble is a Windsor chair named after a neighbouring village of High Wycome in Buckinghamshire, where the Windsor chair originated. The chair uses traditional Windsor chair making techniques in order to further the story, the evolution of the English Windsor chair. The contrast of the black walnut seat on this otherwise ash chair, attractively highlights the wedge tenon detail where the leg intersects with the top of the seat.
