President's Report
At the end of my first year as President of Swimming Otago, I wish to thank you for the
opportunity to serve in the role over the last 12 months, and have pleasure in submitting my
report.
Being a swimming parent is so easy to take things for granted. There is an immense amount of
hard work that goes on behind the scenes ensuring the administration of regional activities are
duly completed, competitions are administered, organised and run. Arriving at the pool
knowing everything is in place for our swimmers should never be taken for granted. So firstly
I’d like to acknowledge my committee, thank you for your support and dedication during the
year. The number of hours each year these individuals volunteer to fulfil their roles on the
main committee and various sub committees has to be commended. To be part of a team of
dedicated individuals that you can rely on makes my role much easier.
It would be remise of me not to also thank Terry Wall who resigned from the Swimming
Otago committee this year after 7 years of service. During this time Terry has been involved in
a number of roles and sub committees of Swimming Otago. So on behalf of everyone involved
in swimming in the Otago region, a big thank you to Terry.
To the other unsung heroes, the club committee members, technical officials, parents and
supporters of swimming in the region, thanks. Without you it wouldn’t be possible to have
learn to swim programmes, club training and ribbon nights, competitions and swimmers
arriving at training and competitions at all hours of the morning and night.
Our swimmers have once again performed with distinction in the pool at a national level, the
highlight being the selection of Kate Godfrey and Matthew Glassford in the New Zealand
World University Games Team, and the recent selection of Andrew Trembath for this year 's
Junior Pan Pacific Games. Also many other swimmers have made Swimming NZ development
camps/ pathways and all need to be congratulated on their success. While it would have been
nice to have had one or two of our swimmers in Glasgow this year it wasn’t to be, hopefully
some of our younger swimmers will aspire to be at the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the
Gold Coast.
However of major concern is the reduction in competitive swimmers in the region over the last
12 months. While it was to be expected that with the demise of the Waves club, that some of
their swimmers may have decided to give the sport away, there has been an alarming number
of senior swimmers who have decided to ‘hang up their togs’. Without these senior swimmers
in the pool, our junior swimmers lose mentors and experienced athletes for guidance. As a
region we need to encourage these swimmers to remain involved in swimming in some form,
for the betterment of our younger swimmers coming through.
I also believe that now in its second year, the Dunedin Swim Coaching Board (DSCB) has not
achieved what most people in the competitive swimming space in Dunedin would have hoped
for. Much of this can probably be attributed to the objectives of the main stake holder of the
DSCB the Dunedin City Council, which appeared on the face of it to be more concerned about
utilisation of pool resource in any form, not just competitive swimming. As a committee we
need to work alongside the DCSB so that our concerns and wishes are heard.
Swimming Otago has recently purchased 2 new projectors and screens. This will allow results
to be displayed at both the start end and middle of the pool during competitions. With the
purchase of the new timing equipment for Moana Pool last year, the old touch pads and
associated equipment has a new home in Cromwell and Queenstown, This should mean that
the Central Otago based clubs access to this equipment for their competitions. In addition the
Dunedin City Council is purchasing a new bulkhead for Moana Pool, which subject to re
surveying of the pool, should mean the pool is the correct length with touch pads at both ends
of the pool.
This year has seen many changes at both a national and regional level. Swimming NZ has
shifted its headquarters from Wellington to Auckland, new regional constitutions are being
implemented throughout the country, and a new national constitution is in the throws of being
finalised along with a ‘Whole of Sport Plan’. The high performance division of Swimming NZ
has appointed a number of new staff to manage the various high performance plans they have
put in place, and is talking with the regions to get them in synch with their objectives. We also
have a new database, replacing the existing Zeus system, which went live last week.
The loss of State Insurance as the major sponsor for Swimming NZ, and with no obvious
replacement, has meant that Swimming NZ has had to rethink their sponsorship model and
repackage it to meet the requirements of the corporate sponsorship market.
As a result of comments around the lack of long course meets in Otago, we introduced an
additional long course meet at Anniversary weekend this year to help with preparation for our
senior swimmers for national long course competitions. While this meet was well supported by
our colleagues in the south and the north, it was disappointing that the majority of Otago’s
senior swimmers decided to bypass the event. The feedback we received from the majority of
coaches, albeit most of whom were not based in the Otago region, was that the timing was
excellent for their swimmers preparation and they would support the meet going forward. All
we ask is the same level of support from senior swimmers in our own region.
Another busy year lies ahead for our committee. With the implementation of the new regional
constitution, the current committee structure of Swimming Otago will change with the
establishment of a governance board. The primary focus of this board relates to governance
issues, at a regional and national level, leaving the traditional management functions, which
the current committee has been looking after, to be looked after by a management committee.
Given that some of the existing committee will take positions on the governance board, this
will leave room for some new blood on the management committee(s) of Swimming Otago. So
don’t be shy, without volunteers, it is swimmers who will suffer.
On the competition front we have the South Island Secondary Schools in July this year, and
next year’s Division 2 championships, both at Moana Pool. With these meets and the new
rules around minimum levels of officials required to run swimming meets I ask clubs to
encourage parents and supporters to consider giving officiating a go. It is not as daunting as
you may think, and we can’t continue to expect the same people to give up their time week in
and week out, for the benefit of your swimmers.

Portfolio Reports
Competition
This season saw another full calendar with swim meets for different levels of swimmer
happening in Central & Coastal Otago. Swimmers looking for more competitive opportunities
or chasing that elusive qualifying time have also travelled to other meets outside our region.
In November Swimming Otago assisted with Special Olympics National Summer games
which was a new experience and enjoyable experience for those who helped. A special thanks
to Kay Alexander for the work undertaken in the organisation of the meet.
Swimming Otago also helped with the NZ Masters Long Course Championships that were
held at Moana Pool in May 2014.
Thank you to Wanaka for organising and hosting the Otago Country Club Championships in
Wanaka where those attending had an enjoyable meet.
Once again a combined Otago & Canterbury Championships were held at Moana Pool in
January 2014 for the 13 and overs. There was a change in the order of events for this part of
the meet which appears to have overcome the issues of the previous combined championships.
There was another change which saw the Otago 12 and under’s part of the championship being
held in early December 2013.
A new long course meet was scheduled for Otago Anniversary weekend at the request of clubs
for more long course meets. This meet was well supported by clubs outside of Otago and it
was disappointing that a number of Otago senior swimmers did not attend this meet.
Finally a big thank you must go to all officials who give up considerable amounts of their time
and those who take on the extra responsibility of organizing meets. Without you the events
would not happen.
Technical Panel
The Technical Panel of Colin Walker (Convenor), Kay Alexander Michael Dodds Alan Hale, Allan
McMorran, and Patricia McNaughton meet a number of times during the year. Panel members
have been providing mentoring to new official’s and it is good to see more parents becoming
involved in this part of a swimming meet.
We are still struggling to get parents offering to become officials and we are looking at ways
of helping Clubs to encourage parents to become involved. This work is still in progress.
There is still an urgent need to get more people involved in the key positions of Starters, JOS,
Recorders and Referees. This is now becoming very important has SNZ now requires a
minimum number of officials at a meet for times to be accepted into the SNZ database.
Clubs are encouraged to discuss any technical matter with any member of the Technical Panel.
The mentoring system has seen a number of new officials qualify in the 2013/2014 season.
Congratulations to
Mike Patton, Christine Humphrey, Sian Waite, Leann Kent, Ruth Napper, Charlotte Buchanan,
Brendan McCane who qualified as IOT’s, Peter Deans, Matthew Heaton who qualified as
National IOT’s and Sara Dick on qualifying as starter.
SNZ appoints officials to its National meets and this season Otago officials appointed
included Alan Hale, Allan McMorran and Mary McFarlane.
Treasurer’s Report
There has been no major purchases in the last year, which has really just been one of trying to
consolidate our position. This has been difficult in itself as swimmer numbers are down on
last year.
We held a new meet this year, Otago Anniversary Meet, which was a profitable exercise for
us. We also ran the Otago Primary and Secondary School Meet, the Otago Winter Meet, and
of course the Otago Champs. These meets enable us to raise funds to help benefit our
swimmers.
You may note that the accounts show that we made a loss for the year of $33,320. All of this
loss can be attributed to Depreciation. Depreciation is an expense that reduces the value of
your assets to reflect their current value, it is not something that is paid out. The depreciation
value this year is high due to the purchase of the new timing equipment last year, it made up
$32,551 of the total $35654 of depreciation this year. So if we add back the depreciation
expense, we are in profit of $2,334, which while small it is positive.

Club Report Section 2013-2014 Season
Annual Report of the Alexandra Swimming Club
It has been a relatively smooth 12 months for the club. Its non-competitive swimming program
continues to prove a popular entry point for many new and beginner swimmers, our competitive
swimmers have trained and competed throughout the winter months and over summer, and we
continue to have a reliable group of volunteers, officials and supporters to assist with the
administration and delivery of the various club activities.
Now approaching its 95th year, club membership stands at around 40-50 full-time competitive
swimmers plus 50 or so seasonal club night members.
Squads:
Competitive squad membership has sat at between 13-15 members over the past 12 months,
with the addition of several new members and departure of some of our more senior squad
members. Weekly training (2 morning & 3 evening sessions) under the direction of head coach,
Barry Dick, continued over the winter months of 2013 for senior squad members in preparation
for the main spring/summer season.
The club has in the past had a relatively steady influx of new junior and development
swimmers, the former feeding in from the club night program held over the summer months, for
those that wish to progress to the next level. Development squad membership, under the
coaching direction of Shane Allan, is currently fully subscribed at 22-25 members, with a
waiting list, generally aged from 8 years and above.
The club’s summer club night program, under the guidance of Bronwyn Rees, continues to
prove a winning formula, providing a popular introductory swimming experience for learners.
Bronwyn has indicated her intention to stand down some months ago and so the club is now
searching for an enthusiastic volunteer (or volunteers) to take over the mantle of club-night
coordinator for the 2014/15 season. On behalf of the committee, I wish to thank Bronwyn for
her efforts over the past 3 years or more. Her genuine good nature and quiet work ethic has
made this aspect seem almost transparent. There are many young (non-club) swimmers in our
community who will testify to this in the years to come following their introduction to water
safety, self-rescue and water confidence under the direction of Bronwyn and her willing team of
volunteer coaches and supporters.
Committee & Officials:
The club now has a core group of committee members, meeting on the first Tuesday of every
month, the regular attendees include: Shane Allan, Karen Begg, Janene Bennie, Barry Dick,
Bruce Lauder, Bronwyn Rees, Pragati Gautama, Neil Jordon, Bruce Lauder, Richard Morris
and myself. Club families and specific individuals continue to provide the key support
framework for operating events, voluntary coaching and administration within the club, along
with our squad coaches (Barry Dick and Shane Allan). The committee is especially grateful for
our volunteers who freely provide their time, energy and enthusiasm for the benefit of our club
swimmers. In particular, I should like to thank those who are responsible for key roles of
recorder/registrations (Lynda Cook), secretary/correspondence (Karen Begg),
Treasurer/accounts (Pragati Gautama) and Uniforms/stock control (Carmen Morris). Processing
meet entries, ensuring club accounts are maintained in a sound financial state, planning and
coordinating home & away meet gathering and providing technical support and expertise, both
at home and away at local, regional and national meetings. These activities all too often go un-
noticed but underpin the viability of the club and the smooth running of events by all those who
participate throughout the course of the year. In the event that anyone has not already been
directly thanked, I would like to thank all our supporters and sponsors who have over the past
12 months provided input into the future club direction, spreads the organizational workload
and supported our swimmers in any way.
Accounts:
Club accounts are perhaps the most demanding more of the elected representative’s time. Xero
has proved to be a much more powerful, flexible and user friendly interface to control and
reporting of the clubs finances. A big thank you must go to Pragati Gautama for undertaking the
transition. The new online (cloud) service, with email links to invoices and statements is a big
improvement over the old EasyBooks accounting software, plus the integration of
debtors/creditors and invoicing/orders is much more intuitive. Let be honest, the old system was
primitive by comparison and never really very Easy however it is not foolproof and some basic
accounting knowledge is still required. Due to work commitments, Pragati indicated her
intention to stand down and the club has been fortunate to secure the services of Jeana Tate-
Bell, who is currently in the process of taking over the role. Welcome Jeana! Please note: all
club account inquiries (invoices/payment inquiries) should be directed to Jeana
[email protected]. The club is also currently in the process of undertaking its financial
statement and, along with the hand-over by the out-going treasurer, this has unfortunately
resulted in some delay with invoicing and payments over the past couple of months.
Over the past three seasons, a local accounting company has undertaken a detailed review, at
significant time and cost. Clearly, for a non-profit organization with limited income streams and
zero surplus, this was not sustainable or logical in the longer term. Although some cost was
attributable to inefficiencies, the club agreed following the last AGM that a less detailed
overview and financial statement would suffice. This year the club has authorized Affleck &
Dodd to perform this work and hopefully this will results in a faster turn-around over future
years once the new system is ‘bedded in’ and eventually reduced accounting costs, both in time
and money, once the format is fine-tuned.
The club is expecting to have its financial report prepared later this month and to hold its AGM
shortly thereafter in early July.
Competition:
Challenge Cup:-
Unfortunately the club was unable to secure a suitable date for hosting Challenge Cup this past
year. The annual Challenge Cup race meet is always very popular event and well received by
those clubs who regularly attend. It is also the main fundraiser for the club. Historically the
meet was held in the first week of December every year however, prior to the re-organization of
the Otago/Canterbury/Southland regional championships, Alexandra had to relinquish this date
and has struggled to find a suitable alternative over the past four years. The Xmas Challenge
Cup event (September 2012) was the last time this meet was held. The Waitangi Challenge Cup
weekend (February 2012) was well received, also serving as the final qualifying opportunity
prior to 2012 NZ Juniors. However the latter option really only becomes viable when Waitangi
Day officially falls on a Monday or a Friday, as it did in 2012 and will again in 2015, 2016 &
2017.
The Alexandra Swimming Club would like to take this opportunity to advise clubs that it is
proposing to host the Waitangi Challenge Cup once again in 2015 (over the long weekend of
February 6th
-8th
), 2016 (February 6th
-8th
), & 2017 (February 4th
-6th
). If approved, the club
looks forward to making it a memorable and enjoyable event for all concerned.
Local Meets:-
We have had swimmers attending meets in Queenstown (Earlybird, Otago Country Clubs, Final
Countdown), Cromwell (Springs) and Alexandra (Novice) this past year. We encourage all our
swimmers to attend as many local and regional meets as possible over the course of the year. If
there is genuine interest then it would be good to see the re-introduction of a couple of local
short-course distance events once again over the course of the year.
The Novice meet (April) was very well attended and the club received very positive feedback
by both clubs and swimmers. Queenstown, Cromwell, Wanaka and Alexandra all fielded
swimmers, and clearly there is a desire to hold more events such as this for novice swimmers in
the immediate area as the travelling and entry costs are both reasonable and affordable.
Following a proven formulae, the annual club championships were again held over four
evenings, covering all strokes plus individual medley, and distances ranging between 25m and
200m to cater for both non-championships (novice) and championship (competitive) swimmers.
A summary is available online (http://www.asc.org.nz/page9.php) but in summary there were
23 new club records sets this year.
Regional Meets:-
Over the course of the year our club swimmers have travelled to Dunedin and Invercargill to
compete at ORCA, Southland Championships, Otago Championships, Neptune Queens
Birthday meet, Otago Primary & Secondary Schools Championships, Southland Age Group
Champs and South Island Country & Town.
National Meets:-
Once again, the club had a select few of its swimmers attending National meets this past year:
2014 NZ Juniors (Wellington), 2014 Div II (Wellington); and 2014 National Age Groups
(Wellington). There were again many creditable performances and some excellent national
results which again reflect well on both our swimmers and their coaches. Two of our swimmers
also attended the 2013 NZ Short-course Championships, with one also selected for the
inaugural 2013 NZ Swimming Zonal Champs, held at the Kilbirnie Aquatic Centre in Sept/Oct.
One club swimmer also qualified for NZ Opens.

Personal Highlights:
This year the excellent swimming by our younger club swimmers at both the novice and club
champs, plus a small club such as ourselves gaining representation at all national meets, with
some great results. The Zonal meet was also highly entertaining and with a strong and
convincing performance by both the Junior and Senior Mako team members. A very
compressed program made for an action-packed day of swimming, the format providing a
unique ‘team’ environment, raising both team expectations and individual performances. Many
of our swimmers play multiple sports and several have participated in triathlons and multisport
events over the summer. This provides another novel dimension to their sport and offers them a
taste of open water swimming and how it compares with regular lane swimming.
Wish list for 2015:
Additional novice meets (local area)
At least two dedicated (local) distance meets a year plus one dedicated (long course)
distance meet (Dunedin) although understandably pool hire costs may make this
impractical in the absence of sponsorship.
Mixed club relay category for local meets when appropriate. Smaller clubs will continue
to struggle to field ‘club relay teams’, perhaps there is there an opportunity here to
expand the format?
Challenges for 2014/2015:
Pool hire charges, travel costs and geographic isolation remain some of the most significant
hurdles to growing the sport and retaining membership. Increases in Swimming New Zealand
affiliation fees have resulted in the first significant increase in membership fees for the past 2-3
years as the actual club membership proportion of member fees has been kept to less than $30
annually.
The club strives to ensure that swimming remains an affordable option to families and that there
ought to be as few barriers as possible to children becoming confident and competent swimmers
in a country with such a focus on water sport and water based activities. The club regularly
invests in new equipment for its club-night program via membership fees, securing new fund-
raising opportunities for its members and seeking to-up support from external charitable trusts
and funding agencies. I would like to acknowledge the support that the club and/or its
individual members have received over the past 12 months from sponsors and funding agencies
such as SPARC, Lend a Hand Foundation, the Skeggs Foundation and the Otago Community
Trust.
The ‘Life Members’ board has been recently upgraded, and now updated, with the addition of
two more names: Barry Dick (Club Head Coach) and Anne Vessey (past Treasurer), in
recognition of their input over the years.
The club also has a new swim cap (designed by our swimmers). They are very striking and have
already elicited many positive comments.
In summary: The 2013/14 season has again been a successful and rewarding one for the club
committee and its members. The club is looking forward to continuing collaboration with its
neighboring clubs over the coming 12 months. I wish to again thank our club committee and
members for their continued support and assistance over the year, as we now prepare for the
coming year and AGM next month, and to congratulate all our swimmers on their personal
achievements over the past year.

Annual Report of the Clutha United Swimming Club
I would like to welcome our coaches, committee and Parents to tonight’s AGM and Prize
giving. It is a pleasure to present my annual report.
We have had a successful year with our club memberships, and have had a lot of new
swimmers joining and a lot more out there it seems wanting to join for our 2014 season. Our
groups have been full and it is great to see our pool being fully utilised.
Our club is also excited about our increase in the number of competitive swimmers wanting to
attend meets. Now that they have had some experience at meets this season hopefully they will
want to attend more meets in the 2015 season.
Fundraising has been minimal this season, we have the ongoing sales of toilet paper have run an
Easter raffle also a money raffle and sausage sizzle at our South Otago swim meet. Thanks
must go to Balclutha New World for the donation of sausages. We will need to look at some
form of fundraising in the up and coming season, as we need to purchase some larger items,
such as a starter. So if anyone has any great ideas feel free to let us know.
A number of swimmers qualified and represented our club in 2014 at regional and national
events. Well done to these swimmers:
South Island Town & Country
Mackenzie Baines, Nicholas Robinson, Mathew Robinson
NZ Junior’s
Cassidy Robertson, Ella-Rose Lawrence, Trent Dickie
Coaching – Sharon McKinnel was head coach for this season leading the way with some keen
new coaches wanting to learn more from Sharon. We have decided to do some coach training
type courses with Sharon passing on her valuable skills and ideas to our club coaches which
will then be passed onto the children. Many Thanks to all the coaches who did coach this
season, without you there would not be a club. Also thanks to our current committee that turn
up to monthly meetings and various events. It is your support that helps our club to run
efficiently.
A special Thanks must go to Margie Willocks who is stepping down as our treasurer this
season. Margie has been our treasurer for the past five or six seasons and two of these she has
not had children in the club but has been happy to continue for the club. This has been greatly
appreciated by us all.
We would also like to thank Rural Livestock c/o John Williams for the generous donation of
drink bottles for all swim club members.
I am looking forward to the 2014-2015 season and seeing our club grow in numbers. We
welcome any parents to join our committee and help us to be a successful club for the benefit of
all children. I would like to finish off in saying that swimming is a discipline that will provide
your children a life skill of hard work and commitment this will hopefully benefit them and be
applied to other things they achieve in life.
Finally Many Thanks again to Swim Otago, officials and timekeepers for all the hard work put
in this season.
Enjoy the winter break and we look forwarded to seeing everyone back in the spring.
Thank You to all

Annual Report of the Cromwell Swimming Club
Welcome parents, committee and life members to our Annual General Meeting.
It has been a year of challenge and change for the Cromwell Swimming Club.
We farewelled long-standing head coach Pete Ross with a memorable dinner at the Golden
Gate Lodge with current and past club members reminiscing about times gone by. Pete spent
many volunteer hours poolside to develop competitive swimmers and we are very grateful for
his input into our club over the years. We miss his ability to connect with the other Central
Otago clubs to set up novice meets and swim camps and are just realising how much we are
missing those opportunities – so we are hoping to get these connections re-established in 2014.
We are really happy to hear he has a wee squad going on Stewart Island. He’s campaigning for
a 6 lane, 25m pool on the Island and plans to have swimmers at South Island Country and Town
in 2015.
The search for a replacement head coach started in earnest once Pete had departed for distant
shores and we had applicants from far and wide - Brazil, Romania, Singapore and Auckland.
We had a high calibre of coaches who really wanted an offer of work to help them gain a visa to
live in NZ – unfortunately they hadn’t taken note of the 10 hours of work per week offered and
were hoping to make their millions from our wee club. We all learnt a lot about contracting a
coach, immigration and being wary of being taken for a ride.
Natasha Simpson dropped in our laps in August having moved to Alexandra with her fiancé
Cam. Cam has picked up a head of department position at Mount Aspiring College and we are
very lucky to have Natasha who is an ex-NZ representative swimmer with Oceania Champs
Medals and World Cup finalist placings on her CV running coaching programmes for
swimmers in our wee corner of the planet. She is enthusiastic, positive and hard working and
we hope to have her around for a very long time making a positive impact on our young people.
Welcome to our club Natasha.
The Cromwell Swimming Club also endured our third pool closure in five years with a Central
Otago District Council ‘pool tiling’ project meaning that we spent all of winter and a chunk of
spring in 2013 traveling to Alexandra for training. No coach for much of that time meant we
were also relying on the Alexandra Swim Club to provide coaching and programmes for our
swimmers. We owe a huge thank you to Barry and Shane for the time, expertise and effort they
put into keeping our swimmers going. We also owe a huge thanks to BP Cromwell for the use
of a van to transport our swimmers to Alexandra. We are lucky to have support from other
local clubs and from our community in times like this.
We were very glad to be back in our home pool for the start of our main club season. Numbers
were down a bit this year as we find ourselves in competition with Council run lessons – we
have no access to the learners pool and rely on parents of children who are able to swim a 25m
length on pulling their children from lesson providers they may have used for 3-5 years to take
a chance on joining our club – a tough call in a world of so many opportunities for kids sport.
Having said that we have great kids and great parents who have made that leap and we love
watching these swimmers taking their first steps at racing through ribbon nights and we cherish
the improvement they make over the season. We puff with pride about the achievements of our
club swimmers from ribbon night to ribbon night and at club champs.
We have had some attrition from squad numbers. Teenagers making choices about how much
work they really want to put into the pool and the importance of a social life, other sports, and
boarding school have contributed to this – but we are beginning to build numbers of keen young
swimmers and hope to continue this to enable us to move forward as a club that fosters
competitive swimmers – not just a swimming lesson provider; a very important factor for us to
have a successful future.
The Cromwell Swimming Club continues to have swimmers gaining success at many levels of
competition. In the 2013/2014 season we have had strong numbers representing the club at
South Island Country and Town with Sean Tan having a high level of success breaking a meet
record. Carter McAuliffe, Joe Harrison, Sean Tan and Emma Patton all achieved qualifying
times for NZ DivII competition. Joe and Carter both travelled to Hamilton to compete and both
achieved personal best times. Jack Harrison competed at NZ Short course champs gaining
personal best times in all but one swim and NZ Age group champs achieving personal best
times in 4 out of 8 swims. Andrew McMillan also competed at NZ opens in 2014 as a member
of the Cromwell Swimming Club.
The Cromwell Swimming Club once again ran a successful Otago Spring Carnival meet.
Numbers in 2013 were well down on previous years. There are now a number of meets held
around October/November that compete for swimmer numbers. The committee did an
excellent job of hosting the swimmers and clubs that did attend and we believe that Spring
Carnival still holds an important place in the Swim Otago calendar. We look forward to
hosting again in November and hope that clubs from Otago will encourage swimmers to attend
and support this event. As a result of lower swimmer numbers our profit from this event –
which is our main fundraiser was significantly down on previous years.
Our club finances need some attention currently and building club coffers is going to be an
important consideration for the incoming committee. We have had 3 years of losses and this
year has seen us getting to critical point with club finances with the extra stretch of contracting
a professional coach. Recently we have had to cut into our club reserves built up over many
years to help pay monthly bills. Prudent financial management and a focus on fundraising and
sponsorship will be essential for the incoming committee.
Lastly a huge thanks to the current committee for all the time and effort they have put into
running our club over the past year. It has been great working with you all and I thank you for
your time and experience. Particular thanks to Viv Wilkinson who manages the chaos that is
club swimming – organising coaches, coaching courses, club nights, ribbon nights and liaising
with parents, – it is a huge job and you have undertaken it with a smile again this year. Thanks
also to Mike for continuing to organise our officials and to lead this by example by gaining
your IOT qualification this season.
Special thanks go to Marie Holden for continuing to be a part of our committee and for taking
on the role of treasurer so capably. We really appreciate the years of service you have given to
the club and appreciate all the roles you have undertaken as a parent, committee member,
coach, secretary, treasurer, president and club recorder. We appreciate the dedication and
commitment you have put into supporting swimming in Cromwell long after your children have
moved on from the sport.
I look forward to some new faces joining our committee and working alongside the experience
of some of our current committee to take our club into the future.

Annual Report of the Dunedin Swimming Club
It is my privilege to report another successful year for club, our membership remains at capacity
for the water space allocated and we continue are monitoring our standard of coaching. So in
my opinion club continues its strength and for the good of the community.
Lane fees:
For the first time this financial year we incurred lane fees of $2430. This cost was only
bearable thanks to the $1000 funding received through Bendigo Valley Sports and Charity
Foundation. This funding has allowed us to hold the membership for this financial year and
next, We are certain some of our members would have dropped away due solely to cost which
may have resulted in those children never becoming confident in the water.
Swimming NZ:
After the total restructured of Swimming NZ last financial year where we understand “Learn to
Swim” is now not Swimming NZ business. To my knowledge we have not had any
communication about “Learn to Swim” so we are simply continuing what we see is our core
role to the community.
Finances:
There has been some quick acceptance by our members to pay their fees with online banking
(50%), Christine our Secretary prepared the membership cards and had these handed to each
family as they entered the pool in February (superb move). I expect this online banking
percentage will continue increase saving our administration time. Secondly we have moved to
making most payments online which then allows every payment to be exported to Excel again a
major time saver for preparing the annual accounts.
Synopsis:
With our subscription income static we incurred the following big expenses: 300 Swim caps
$2455, Lane fees $2430, which saw our reserves drop by $ 2239. The committee made the
decision to hold fees at the current position knowing our $17000 in reserves would start to
erode, now $14888
I wish to formally thank every coach and committee member for the time they volunteer
throughout the year, without their commitment we truly don’t have a club. Our club enjoys a
very high level of volunteer participation and for me it is an honour to work alongside each of
you.

President
Annual Report of the Kawa Dolphins Swimming Club
Kawa Dolphins enjoyed another successful year in 2013. Our membership remains buoyant at
81 children, and we are capacity in our junior class with a growing waiting list.
Our coaching programme, revamped last year, has settled down very well and offers a clear
progression for students, parents and instructors alike to follow. The club owes a big vote of
thanks to Adrienne McLellan and Timothy Ball for their work in implementing this and
supporting all the instructors in keeping great records and in promptly assessing student
progress.
Once again we have been fortunate in seeing new instructors joining our ranks, and it is
particularly gratifying when these are current or former senior members. Congratulations to
Anya Gipp and Lauren McLellan for successfully completing the ASTA programme. We also
have a healthy number of senior members keen to take the programme next year when they
meet the age requirements. It is very heartening to see all the blue T-shirts in the junior pool -
at least two instructors or assistants for each of the seven groups. Our grateful thanks go to all
instructors, new and experienced, who give up their time to support the club.
A new development this year, due to Timothy Ball’s tireless energy, was the establishment of
classes for adults - all parents of children in the club - who are keen to either learn to swim or
to improve their skills. This not only supports the progress of the children, but it adds to the
special family character of the club.
The range of activities Kawa Dolphins undertakes in addition to regular swimming lessons is
also part of our club’s special character. This includes five scuba sessions at Dive Otago
organised by Dwight Adie, underwater hockey supported by Dunedin Underwater Hockey
Club, synchronised swimming sessions taken by Aquagold Synchronised Swimming Club, and
of course kayaking and water safety sessions. The club trip to the Waimate Ribbon Carnival at
the end of the year is becoming a regular fixture.
Club finances remain healthy. We took advantage of a good cash position to make a sizeable
investment in new and replacement equipment to support learning and skill acquisition. Thanks
to Dwight Adie for organising this. Members voted at the AGM to keep club fees at the same
level once again, $65 for the year or $20 per term.
Committee and Officers for 2014 were voted in at the AGM as follows:
President: Steve Silvey
Vice President: Timothy Ball
Treasurer: Cam Weston
Secretary: Mary Dalton
Committee members: Sara Hall, Alec Cathro, Anne Cathro, Craig Hughes, Sally Clayton,
Adrienne McLellan, and Dwight Adie (honorary life member).
This year we once again recognised exceptional contributions to the club by awarding two
longstanding club officials with honorary life membership. Timothy Ball and Sara Hall have
over many years made enormous contributions both in the pool and on the organising side. We
offer them our sincere thanks.
Finally I would like to thank everyone who contributes to the club - officials, committee
members, instructors, parents, supporters and of course children. All play an important role in
making Kawa Dolphins such an enjoyable and successful club.

Annual Report of the Kiwi Swimming Club
With many long-serving Club Officers departing at the last AGM, this year consisted of a
largely new look committee with a new President, Vice President, Treasurer, Asst Treasurer
and Secretary. A number of other committee members took on new responsibilities and it was
very pleasing to have several new enthusiastic members join the committee, attending monthly
meetings during term time.
Successful ribbon nights were held each term with many swimmers adding to their ribbon
collection with personal best times, showing improvements in both stamina and stroke
technique. Thank you to those committee members involved in ensuring these ribbon nights run
so smoothly. Our Kiwi Challenge Meet in November was again very successful with many
swimmers around Otago and Southland competing. Kiwi had a strong presence with 40
swimmers participating, with some excellent results from our increasing pool of competitive
swimmers. A number of our younger swimmers took this opportunity to participate in a swim
meet thereby gaining valuable experience.
Kiwi continued to feature strongly in external swim meets with around 28 swimmers regularly
participating in the larger meets, with the majority recording one or more personal bests in their
events. A Kiwi record was set in April 2014 at the Southland Age Group meet with the 4
participating swimmers achieving 12 medals from 12 swims – a fabulous result. We have also
seen an increasing number of swimmers achieving entry into South Island and National meets.
It was disappointing however that Swim Dunedin did not provide coaching support for all
meets which necessitated our club captain / coach having to travel with the Kiwi team on
several occasions which meant additional expense for Kiwi.
Maintaining a strong base of regular coaches is an on-going challenge. We have a wonderful
but small group of dedicated volunteer main pool coaches, however we will need to work over
the coming year to extend this group to ensure our swimmers continue to receive good quality
consistent coaching. The professional coaching set up in the Learners Pool has proven to be a
very worthwhile investment with noticeable improvement in swimming techniques and a good
ratio of swimmers to coaches. The first batch of swimmers moving from the learner’s pool
through to the main pool is also showing the benefits of this professional coaching.
At the beginning of the swimming year many returning families took advantage of the
opportunity to register and pay on line rather than attend registration night and this made the
registration process considerably easier. It was however still a very busy registration night with
many new families joining Kiwi and bringing their children along for an assessment session.
The significant increase in the number of learners pool swimmers resulted in the decision to
hold two coaching sessions each club night: 6.15 – 6.45pm and 6.45 – 7.20pm. Although not
ideal for everyone, the increased space and improved ratio of coaches to swimmers has been
very well received. We now also have a number of assistant coaches working in the learner’s
pool with two recently undertaking a Swimming New Zealand Swim Teacher course.
A number of Kiwi parents have also undergone training sessions, with Brendan McCane and
Charlotte Buchanan now qualified IOT’s (Inspector of turns) and Talea Uluakiola currently a
trainee IOT. We do need to work on encouraging other parents also to “step up” their
involvement.
On a financial note, Kiwi has had a challenging year – the financial impact of professional
coaching, increased lane hire fees and increased race entry charges have all played a part,
resulting in some policy changes in order to ensure Kiwi’s ongoing financial feasibility. On a
positive note, the advent of Xero accounting has streamlined the accounting process and
reporting functions.
There is always room for improvement – work has started on conducting a survey of members
to ascertain what we are doing well and what we can improve on and we are looking to
establish a greater website presence where we can regularly provide updates of our activities
and upcoming swim meet information.
I would like to thank all the committee members for the hard work, commitment and
enthusiasm they have shown this year and look forward to another successful year working
together to ensure the future of Kiwi as both a competitive and family oriented swim club.

Annual Report of the Milton Swimming Club
We have had a great season this year for the Milton Swimming Club.
As is usual we had to wait for the swimming pool to open. Every year it seems to get later and
later. We started the season in November, with 71 children registered for swimming lessons.
This year we formed a coaching co-ordinator position and this was shared between, Tracey Hall
and Nadine Smith. This has worked very well.
We have had an increase in coaches this year which has been great. Once again thank you to all
our coaches, Nadine Smith, Sharron Ferguson, Boo Nichol, Nadine Lister, Paul Hickey, Dean
Willis, Rachel Fegan and Toni Hall. All the coaches have attended training and are working
towards Swim teacher awards and school age and adult. Well done and thank you very much.
This year we have had Nadine Smith take over the training squad on a Monday and Thursday
night. The children in the squad have put alot of effect into their training.
We have had swimmers attend the Taieri Carnival and the Otago anniversary met. All
swimmers achieved personal best swims at these events. Well done.
We held our club champs at the end of April and had many children participated in this event.
Thank you to all that helped with the club champs. Also this year Paul organised the junior club
champs, where the children participated in fun events. Thanks for organising this event Paul for
our junior children, they had a fantastic time.
Prize giving was held again at the pool, which went very well and the children that stayed on
afterwards enjoyed the evening swim.
During the year old equipment has been replaced and we have a new set of swimming flags
across the pool. Also all coaches have rash tops to wear during training.
Overall we have had a great season and are looking forward to next year.
Thank you again to all that have helped, it is very much appreciated.

Annual Report of the Neptune Swimming Club
It is with pleasure I submit the Neptune Swim Club Annual Report for the 2013-2014 season.
Neptune continues to be a vibrant and popular Swim Club, with a large Club session on
Monday Nights and strong Competitive Swimmer group associated with the Dunedin Swim
Coaching Board (DSCB).
As of May 2014, we have 102 Club Swimmers and 74 Competitive Swimmers.
Demand for membership in Neptune has exceeded our ability to accommodate everyone who
wishes to join our Club, and are still operating a waiting List in 2014.
Monday Night Club:
Neptune has ceased providing a “Learn to swim” program. It is now our recommendation that
any child who wants to learn to swim will be best served by enrolling in one of the locally run
private swim schools such as the JC Swim School.
New applicants are now required to demonstrate their ability to swim at least 200m, and be able
to swim freestyle, breaststroke, and backstroke as a minimum requirement for membership.
Monday Club Night has a strong focus on coaching the Club Swimmer group to ready them for
professional coaching and the transition to competitive swimming.
We have 10 lanes of Club Coaching at the various levels, and it is excellent to see the steady
progress the Club Swimmers are making as they continue to develop their technique and their
stamina.
Neptune acknowledges the excellent service that our Monday Night Swim Coaches bring to the
Club. Our Coaching Team provides excellent swim coaching, and it is great to see our
swimmers flourish under their guidance.
We congratulate our Club Swimmers who have attended local swim meets in 50m events,
gaining valuable experience in Competitive Swimming. We encourage all our Club Swimmers
to enter at least one swim meet per year for this experience.
Competitive Swimmers:
The Neptune Competitive Swimmers have represented the club very well at all levels of
competition. We have had a number of swimmers selected into various regional & national
teams and development programmes, plus some qualifying for International meets later in the
year.
We congratulate all swimmers who have represented Neptune at the various Local, Regional,
National, and International Meets. We are all very proud of your achievements!
Neptune Queens Birthday Carnival:
The Neptune Queens Birthday Carnival continues to be a very popular and well supported swim
meet.
The 2013 Queens Birthday Meet had over 20 Swim Clubs entered from across the South Island,
with over 300 swimmers entered in over 2,600 Individual Events. (The 2014 event that takes
place this weekend has similar numbers and teams)
Neptune Swim Club has also supported other Dunedin swimming groups such as Masters
Swimming, Secondary & Primary School, and Special Olympics by supplying Technical
Officials to help with the successful running of their meets. As always, Neptune is very
supportive of the Dunedin swimming scene.
Thanks to:
The Neptune Committee is a well-organised and well-functioning group of people. Neptune
Swim Club could not run without the dedication and hard work of Kay Alexander, Gerald
Duncan, Leigh Duncan, Ruth Napper, Kathryn Duncan, Carol Forbes, Kerren Keach, Desiree
Crooks and Debbie Tyrrell.
I thank the Committee for their encouragement and support over this past year.
Special thanks from the Committee go to:
Colin and Evelyn Armstrong who have retired from the Neptune Committee. Evelyn
and Colin have given a huge amount of their time and energy to both the Neptune swim
club and swimming throughout Otago.
To Allan McMorran and Michael Dodds, for their continued support of Neptune. Allan
and Michael are always willing to provide their help and their extensive knowledge to
the Club.
Our thanks go to the supportive and dedicated group of parents who regularly assist with
the running of local swim meets. These parents give up their time to help by officiating
as Time Keepers, I.O.T.’s, Judges of Stroke, in the Control Room, and managing the
catering that keeps everyone fed and watered.
Our thanks go to the Moana Pool Staff, who make our Monday Club Nights and Queens
Birthday Meet run so smoothly. We are most grateful for the facilities provided by
Moana Pool.

President
Annual Report of the Oamaru Swimming Club
Oamaru Swim Club have had a very busy and challenging past 12 months.
This has seen the Oamaru Swim Club finish with ED’s and move into the Otago region.
Also the leaving of Shane Jones who had been a Head Coach at Oamaru Swim Club for the past
12 years.
Shane left Oamaru to take the Head Coach role in Ashburton.
For a lot of our swimmers this was an unsettling time as they had only known Shane and it was
three weeks out from Short Course.
Oamaru Swim Club then had Pedro Barbosa appointed in November 2013 and we started the
process of rebuilding the numbers.
Oamaru Swim Club had successful results at the 12 & under Otago Champs in December 2013.
This then lead us into our camp which was held in Dunedin in January 2014.
One week after this our seniors were at 13 and over Otago Champs showing some great form.
One week after this our Coach Pedro Barbosa had some personal health concerns which ended
up being a lot more serious than first realised. Due to these health concerns Pedro handed in this
notice.
We then had to start the process again, looking for a new coach. We had fantastic parent
support who stepped in and covered the coaching role. In this time we had 3 of our swimmers
compete at Juniors, 1 at Div 11 and 3 had qualified for Nationals but due to our coaching
situation we only had 1 swimmer compete. May 2014 we appointed Narcis Gherca as our Head
Coach who has made the move from Cambridge after six years.
We took 23 swimmers to Neptune 2014 which showed that even with the past 8 months of
unsettled trainings and no Head Coach Oamaru Swim Club have some great potential.
Our main focus now is looking at growing our club and recruiting new members and looking
forward to our new season.

Annual Report of the Port Chalmers Swimming Club
The 2013-2014 season was a good one. We had about 80 swimmers and 12 competitors, more
than ever before. All learner classes were full and we're grateful to all our coaches. Thank you
to Licia for being our head coach again. We also had a successful 'Tryathlon' and Chocolate
Carnival. I'd like to thank all club members for another great year.

Annual Report of the Queenstown Swimming Club
Thank you all for taking time out of your busy lives to join us tonight for both the AGM and
our Club Champs prize giving.
Firstly, let me start by saying what a ride it has been for me over the last 2 years as president.
When I took on the role I expected that it would present a challenge not having any idea that I
would venture into a new error with the club with Frank and Brenda retiring and the club
needing to find a new coach! I am thankful for the fantastic committee that has been with me
through this and who will no doubt agree it has been a very interesting time.
We have made some great progress when employing Daniel in what we have been able to
achieve through local council – a paid position for Daniel within the AA structure – and with
the relationship that we are building with the AA team. It is my hope that this goes from
strength to strength in the years to follow.
Daniel has been working very hard to get a structure in place and cater as best he can to all the
demands and commitments that go with being a Club Coach. He is to be commended on the
results he has gained with his swimmers which include the following at a National level: -
SOUTH ISLANDS: Sept 2013: - Patrick Harris, Sophie Gibson, Ryan Mawhinney, Rebekah
Paul, Grace Paul and Bailie Downing – All had PB’s and various medals were also received …

LC NAGS:
I am sure Daniel will touch on his highlights at the start of our prize giving this evening.
Some outstanding results for these individuals representing their Club, leading me to comment
on the commitment all of our swimmers put in each and every week to reach their goals.
Alongside these swimmers, with might I add, a few sacrifices along the way I am sure, are the
parents. A big thank you goes out to all of you for your help and support over the past year.
Whether it be racing around getting your children to swim meets and training, timekeeping,
officiating in some capacity or Team Managing – especially those who have taken time (and
sometimes leave from work) to attend the above National Meets – it is a huge commitment on
your behalf and vital to the swimmers involved. Well done and keep up the good work!
Again, this year we hosted two very successful meets – Early Bird and Final Countdown and
these are firmly noted in the Swim Calendar. These meets form a vital component of our fund
raising. This year funds were used to provide some financial assistance to Swimmers when
attending National Meets, up skilling and training for our coach – this included bringing down
one of NZ’s top coaches this year to run a very valuable clinic for swimmers , coaches and
parents within the Central Otago Region to attend. This was well received. Thomas Ansorg
who hosted/ran this has also been employed by the Club as a Mentor for Daniel as he finds his
feet in his new role.
As you all know I am standing down as President and from the Committee. I have thoroughly
enjoyed my time on the committee in some capacity for the past 7-8 years and strongly
encourage anyone considering putting their hand up to give it a go. While it is a volunteer role
it is certainly very challenging and rewarding. It has been great to be a part of a fantastic club
and working with such talented and dedicated people on the committee.
My parting words are for the Swimmers.
The dedication, motivation and energy that you put into your sport is inspiring. The talent
within this club is overwhelming and you make your parents, supporters and your club proud
every time you step onto the blocks.
As Martin Lutha King once said – “I have a dream ……
Many of you have a dream – I encourage you to honour that and do your best to reach whatever
that may be …. It will get tough at times and you may have to push through some barriers ….
Don’t give up!!
Presentations to make to 3 very special people:-
Donna Baldey
Donna has been involved with the club since 2005. During that time she has been a coach and
for some of that time the Coaching Co-ordinator all of course on a volunteer basis. Donna has
decided it is time to step away from this now and I would like Donna to come up and receive a
token of our appreciation and gratitude for all the time she has put in over the years on behalf of
the club and all the Swimmers she has taught.
And now two other long serving committee members and friends: -
Susan MaWhinney
Susan is stepping down from her Treasurer role and committee this year. Susan has served on
the committee off and on for the past Years. You would have heard from Susan fairly often –
some of you more regularly than others if you were a bit lax in paying.
Susan successfully applied for SPARC funding that many of us have benefited from this year as
well as other community opportunities to benefit the club.
Susan has been a Volunteer coach since 2005
Again a big thank you to Susan for all the work on the committee and keeping us all on the
straight and narrow
Caroline Gibson
Caroline is stepping down from her role as Vice President and Competitive Coaching Co-
ordinator. Caroline has been on the committee for years. She has been the go to person for
organising and co-ordinating Competitive fund raising, team managers, and policies along with
media relations and recognition awards such as Blues at the high school and submitting
applications for our swimmers. Caroline has also provided a lot of invaluable advice to new
parents joining the club on “what happens now?” and assisted hugely with any marketing and
communication projects that Club has embarked on.
AGM
It is really important that we get the right people into these roles and equally important that you
understand that while some of us are standing down from these positions we will still be around
to provide ongoing help and support.

Annual Report of the Taieri Swimming Club
It is with pleasure that I present the Taieri Swimming Club's Annual Report for 2013 - 2014.
Membership
We were able to clear most of the waiting list this season. With new swimmers joining the
club, not just at the Learner and Improver levels but also a couple of swimmers going straight
into the Squad.
Coaching
Our Learners and Improvers section of the club ran smoothly and we were delighted with the
number of volunteer coaches. We have continued to have mostly two coaches per lane; this
means there is always a backup. This worked well and we noticed improvement in our
swimmers.
This season the Learners and Improvers groups were coached by Fraser Robertson, Fiona Shea,
Craig Christensen, Jacqui Galliven, Vanessa Simpson, Jessica Bungard and Dawn Coates. Also
welcome to our new coaches this season Bridgette Shaw, Jessie Cox, Kerry Kakahi, Rebecca
Clarke, Courtland Ellis, and myself as back up. The Development Group was coached by
Graeme Turnbull and Laurence Simpson. As a club we are so grateful to our volunteer coaches
for the time and effort they so generously give, without them there would not be a club. I would
like to take this opportunity to say thank you from the committee and myself for all the hard
work you have put in this season.
The Squad was full this season with younger swimmers going through into the squad from the
Development Group and from the waiting list. Most swimmers trained at all the 3 sessions
available. Amelia Cruice again continued to work hard as our squad coach and was assisted by
the knowledgeable and exceptional Michelle Summers and Janene Sims.
This season the club handed out two service awards for committee members, Sharon Bungard
Silver award and Sheryl Ann Newman Gold award. These awards are to show our appreciation
for all their hard work.
Fund Raising
We gratefully acknowledge the financial assistance we received from the Bendigo Valley
Sporting and Charitable Trust for a grant to help us with purchasing more coach tops and also
allowed the club to get half a dozen white tops for any club members to wear timekeeping or
officiating at swim meets.
Thank you to those businesses that supported our Carnival with sponsorship and prizes. Our
Taieri Carnival numbers of entries were up from the previous year with only 96 swimmers in
2013 and this year we had 147 swimmers. This could be due to a couple of factors, either it
was because we put the Carnival forward on the calendar to the beginning of March or the
reintroduction of the 25 metre races again.
Results
Congratulations to our competitive swimmers for representing the Taieri Club and achieving
good personal best times throughout the season. We have only had a handful of swimmers
competing at meets, it would be nice if we could encourage more children to give it a go. We
had 12 swimmers attend the Kiwi Challenge Meet in November 2013 this was 4 swimmers
more than last year. Otago Spring Carnival November 2013 in Cromwell, we had 1 swimmer
attend. Otago Country Clubs December 2013 in Wanaka we had only 1 swimmer attend this
meet.
Taieri swimmers who qualified and represented the Club at Regional and National events.
South Islands August – September 2013 Blenheim, Vicki Clarke attended this meet.
NZ Short Course Championships September 2013 Wellington, We had Vicki Clarke attend.
Southland Championships November 2013 Invercargill, we had two swimmers attend this
meet Lachlan Ellis and Vicki Clarke gaining 5 medals.
Otago Championships 12 and under, December 2013 we had 8 swimmers attend.
Otago Championships 13 and over January 2014 Dunedin, the Taieri Club had only Vicki
Clarke attend this meet.
South Island Town and Country February 2014 Invercargill we had 4 swimmers attend.
NZ Division 2 Championships Vicki Clarke qualified for this meet but was unable to attend.
NZ Junior National Championships February 2014 Wellington we had Jordan and Tyler
Summers qualify for this meet.
Technical Officials
During the season we only had a couple of parents that were willing to give their time up to
help out timekeeping at swim meets. I would like to thank those parents that helped out but we
need more parents to step up to the mark. We are very lucky as a club to have Alan Hale -
Referee, Mandy Grainger - IOT and Susan and Steve Sawtell in the recorders room and David
Sawtell marshalling. Without these special people the club would be very light in willing
helpers at the swim meets. I am extremely grateful to all of these people for the time and effort
they all put in to every swim meets during the season.
Committee
Malcolm and Paula Dore - thank you for your support during the Taieri Carnival preparations
with gaining sponsorship and prizes for the club. Sheryl-Anne Newman as Treasurer, we
appreciate the hours you put in and your diligence in seeking funding for the Taieri Club.
Michelle Summers for your volunteer coaching with the Squad. Vanessa Smart - thank you for
sharing the secretary role with Susan Sawtell. Susan, a big thank you to you for your role as
Club Registrar and the support you have given me. Thank you to Bridgette, Sharyn and
Catherine for all your help with the Carnival preparations this season. Thank you to all the
supportive parents and swimmers that showed support to the Taieri Swimming Club during the
season on club days and at swim meets; remember there would not be a club without you or
your wonderful children!

Annual Report of the Wanaka Swimming Club
It is with pleasure that I present my annual President’s report for the Wanaka Swim Club for the
2013/2014 season.
Numbers in the club continue to constantly grow, posing the ever increasing problem of a
shortage of available pool and lane space. At this stage, we are only just managing to cater for
the numbers without having to turn swimmers away.
Our competitive squad had another successful season. We had 5 swimmers who qualified and
attended New Zealand Junior Nationals. All swimmers represented the club well and gained
fantastic experiences from attending a national meet. Jack Findlay had an exceptional meet
bringing home a national title, as well as a silver and bronze medal.
We had 2 swimmers attend New Zealand Short Course Championships. Hamish McLean won
3 silver medals and 2 bronze medals, & Sophie Fairbairn won a silver medal.
Sophie Fairbairn & Dylan Bradley attended National Age Group Championships, with Sophie
winning a bronze medal.
Other individual & club achievements to note for the year are:
Hamish McLean – numerous Class S6 Para U19 NZ records
Hamish McLean – selected by High Performance Sport NZ to be a member of the
Pathway to Podium Programme.
Fiona Hezinger, Sophie Fairbairn & Hamish McLean finalists in the Central Otago
Sports Awards
Jack Findlay & Sophie Fairbairn were selected for NZ Age group Development Camps
1st Otago Club Queenstown Early Bird Meet
1st Otago Club Cromwell Spring Carnival
1st Otago Country club in Otago Country Club Champs
During the second week of the September school holidays, the club ran a junior swim camp.
This was a huge success and can easily be attributable to all the fantastic early season results of
our young swimmers. Huge thanks to all the parents and coaches whose efforts made this camp
such a success.
During the year the club purchased an underwater camera. This has been an invaluable tool for
the coaches and swimmers alike.
The Wanaka Swim Club hosted the 2013 Otago Country Clubs meet in December. This was an
extremely successful meet. The Wanaka Swim Committee members and parents of our
swimmers worked very hard to ensure this meet ran smoothly and it showed on the day. The
weather was sort of kind to us as we had to erect marquee’s for each team on the lawn and the
rain threatened to come but at the end of the meet I was personally thanked by the coaches,
managers and parents of the attending clubs for putting together such a good meet in trying
circumstances. We are currently working hard with our local council for an upgrade and
extension of our pool facilities, and the discussions are going very well…..watch this space!
The club has again been involved with assisting at the Kathmandu River Run Trail series. This,
along with another successful fundraiser on the gate at Warbirds over Wanaka, has given the
club some good funds to put back into the development of our swimmers. Thanks to those who
put their hands up to help at these events.
We are currently working with Cromwell, Alexandra & Queenstown swim clubs, on developing
a Central Otago team building programme. This will develop into running combined swim
camps for all of our elite swimmers. We are hoping that in helping these swimmers get to
know each other better, they will feel that they have more a support network and team
atmosphere while attending these national meets.
Thanks must go to our coaching team of Fi Hezinger & Merryn Johnston. They have produced
another season of fantastic results and achievements for our swimmers at both a regional and
national level. Fi works tirelessly for our swimmers, and we are lucky to have such a talented
coach in such a small area. Merryn does a great job with running the programme for the fitness
swimmers and well as assisting Fi with the competitive squad.
The committee have worked hard again this year. We are lucky to have such a dedicated team
that are so committed to providing the best we can for our young swimmers. To those of you
who are standing down, thank you for all the time and effort you have given the club. To those
of you joining us, we look forward to your contribution and input.

Continued thanks must go to those who support the club on a weekly basis – Kerry who takes
the roll each week and parents who step up to the coaching role for a night when required.
Weekly coaching, Club Champs, Ribbon nights, fun nights, swim meets and access to the Dive
pool all ensure our swimmers have the best learning opportunities and outcomes for all
swimmers. Our membership remains strong and while a number have moved on to new
interests over the past year, the continued interest in the club means spaces are filled quickly
and support our ability to remain a sustainable club as we move towards the 2014/15 season.
