MCory DeGroote

Coach Cory DeGroote is entering his seventh year as the head coach of Mattawan baseball. In addition to his baseball duties at Mattawan, Cory teaches middle school physical education.

Prior to coming to Mattawan, Coach DeGroote taught for two years at North White High School in northern Indiana.

He then moved to Kalamazoo and taught at Milwood Middle School and Vine Alternative School for 4 years in Kalamazoo Public Schools, coaching football and baseball at Kalamazoo Central and basketball at Loy Norrix.

Cory went to The Citadel on a basketball scholarship and also played baseball. He transferred to Indiana State University after his freshman year to play basketball and baseball for the next three years. He earned a B.S. in physical education with a minor in health at Indiana State University, and a Master’s degree in sports management from Western Michigan University. He graduated from West Vigo High School in West Terre Haute, Indiana where he played baseball, football and basketball.

Cory and his wife Michelle have three boys, Trevor (8), Tyler (6) and Toby (6 weeks). Michelle is the head varsity volleyball coach at Mattawan High School. In his spare time he loves to hang out with his family and play with his kids, play golf and fi sh.

Chad Yager

Rob Kuhtz

Coach Chad Yager teaches at Mattawan High School and coaches varsity football, middle school wrestling, and varsity baseball.

Chad received an Associate’s in criminal justice from Ferris State University, a B.S. in education from Central Michigan University, and a Master’s in educational leadership

from Michigan State University. He graduated from Gaylord High School where he played football, baseball, and wrestled.

Chad and his wife Bridget have two children, Braedan (4) and Claire (2).

Assistant CoachFourth Season

Coach Rob Kuhtz teaches algebra and geometry at Mattawan High School. Rob also coaches JV men’s basketball and is team statistician for football, baseball and basketball.

Prior to becoming an assistant varsity baseball coach, Rob coached the Mattawan JV baseball team and was the

freshmen baseball coach at Ionia High School.

Rob graduated from Grand Valley State University with a B.S. in math, minor in physical education, and a Master’s Degree in educational leadership. He attended Ionia High School where he played baseball, basketball, and ran cross country.

Rob is married to Kimberly Kuhtz, an English teacher at Mattawan High School.

Coach Matt Peshl is in his fi rst year as a Wildcats JV baseball coach. He attended and played baseball for Lake Michigan College. Matt is a graduate of Paw Paw High School where he was a 3-sport all conference athlete and 2nd team All-State baseball player.

Wade Waldrup

Coach Wade Waldrup is a social studies and English teacher and is currently subbing in Mattawan Schools. He coaches freshman football and junior varsity baseball.

Wade received a B.S. in group social studies from Grand Valley State University. Graduating from Clawson High School, he lettered in baseball, football, and basketball.

Wade and his wife Alison have a 4-year-old daughter, Paige.

Coach Chuck Abnet has been a regional sales manager for a data processing company for the past 5 years. Prior to this, he was an environmental consultant with Taplin Environmental in Kalamazoo.

Graduating from Davenport University with a Bachelor’s degree in marketing / business administration, Coach

Abnet also attended Southwestern for one year on a baseball scholarship and KVCC on a golf scholarship

He graduated from Portage Central High School in 1993, competing in baseball and golf.

Chuck is married to Teri Abnet.

Josh Ernstes

Coach Josh Ernstes is in his fi rst year as the Wildcats’ freshman baseball coach. He is graduate of Western Michigan University with a teaching degree in biology. Josh currently a Kalamazoo Public School teacher of sixth grade science at Maple Street Magnet School for the Arts.
