ABSTRACTIn response to an anticipated decrease in the number
of associate dean positions at Wisconsin's Milwaukee Area TechnicalCollege, a model was developed to quantify the workload associatedwith the administration of an academic division. First, factorsaffecting the instructional division workload were identified, including the numbers of full- and part-time faculty and staffsupervised; sections scheduled and summer school sections offered;campuses and instructional divisions on which the associate deanfvnctions as immediate supervisor; budget cost centers, programs, specialized facilities and production services, and evening centersand off-site contracted facilities managed; and grants written ormanaged. Next, the factors were weighted, with one unit of workloadbeing defined as the amount of work associated with the supervisionof one f time faculty member, and incorporated into the model. After collecting data, a matrix was developed to summarize the dataand to provide a vehicle by which workloads of individual academicadministrators could be calculated and condensed into a summary byacademic division. Includes the associate dean workload matrix, amatrix developed with two fewer associate deans, a modified workloadmatrix including only major instructional divisions, and the modifiedmatrix with two fewer associate deans.
