What Happened to our Alumni?
I attended Michael Oak Waldorf School from Kindergarten until its last year of Grade 10, after which I came to Constantia Waldorf where I matriculated in 2002. Moving from the closeness of Michael Oak to the relative bigness of Constantia was initially unsettling but I gradually came to enjoy the larger groups and new
energy.
It’s difficult to ascertain the effect that a Waldorf education has had on me as of course I have nothing to compare it to. I can say for sure that, during my time at university, I never had any problem giving an opinion or asking a question; and I didn’t lap up information without thinking about it myself first. This critical, question-ing perspective helped me immensely. Also, I entered my tertiary studies expecting them to be meaningful, which ultimately helps them to be so. This wasn’t the case with some of my peers who, in some instances, seemed to expect education to be
disappointing in some way, possibly due to being let down earlier on.
A Waldorf education certainly isn’t a magic potion that makes your future happen for you; but it did help me to stay curious and to trust my own
senses and thoughts, which is fundamentally important.
Since leaving school I studied up to Masters level at Rhodes University, specialising in Drama and ultimately Choreography. I have since followed a career in the arts freelancing as a Choreographer-Director, Dance Educator and Collaborator on many different types of creative projects. My artistic practice includes professional performances of original work as well as participatory workshops for creative movement experiences. In 2014, I was honoured to receive the highest of accolades in my field of the arts in South Africa, namely the Standard Bank Young Artist Award for Dance. Over the next few years I hope to continue to prac-
tice in South Africa but also to explore some international connections.
Warm regards
Nicola
Thank you Nicola for this lovely piece! Calling all alumni– we would love to hear from you. If you would like to
submit an article please contact our School Coordinator [email protected]
We are contacting our alumni to hear their post Waldorf stories and to keep them up to date with our school. Here is a lovely update from Nicola Elliott from our 2002
Matric Class.
Sports Corner
A shift in sporting focus as we head into the summer terms, with basketball and cricket taking centre stages. We also have the cross country runs coming up for both PS and HS, a chance to get back to basics and just
run!
Some great individual achievements to report after our break...
Alex Blatcher won silver at the Karate National Championships. He has now been chosen
to represent South Africa at the international Karate Championships in Germany next year.
After attending trials, Isaiah Sonn Pather and Gabriel Karp have been selected to play for the Metro Town Schools U13 Basketball team. Their new team subsequently won a
regional tournament, and will now trial to take part in the national tournament in 2016.
Summer Sutton represented Western Province U13 Girls at the National Surfing
Championships in Jeffreys Bay, finishing second overall.
Congratulations to you all!

Night Market Friday 30th October 5 to 9PM
We open our Night Market Season in the fourth term with our annual HALLOWEEN NIGHT MARKET! Gate duties are the Class 10 parents and the
Class 12 parents (THANK YOU! in advance).
Night Market Music Line-up for October is:
New!!! - the OPEN MIKE SESSIONS from 5PM to 6PM - Bring your songs and poetry and lets hear you…
Faye and Wren 6 - 7PM
Faye & Wren is an alternative folk group consisting of singer-songwriter -duo -
Wren Hinds (Hinds Brothers Band) & ambient songstress Faye Oakes.
The young outfit have crafted a minimalistic and honest sound performing on the Southern African music scene and with their unique performances they
have harnessed a dedicated listenership.
Listeners can expect an original sound that captures a timeless place accom-
panied by a sincere style of writing.
Lonesome Dave Ferguson 7- 9PM
LONESOME DAVE FERGUSON is a one-man lo-fi-hi-impact explosion of Trans-Blues & Country-Dub. This solo show uses only harmonica, human beat-box and vocals, recording live loops and then layering and building those loops to construct a song… Although it's a solo act it's not your typical singer-song-whiner type show, expect more in
your face dance-style grooves served up in a Deep-South style…
*NEW* This season we are adding a new inter-active Alice in Wonderland Tea party play especial-ly for our littlies performed by sunshine Drama Co.
“Mad Hatter: “Why is a raven like a writing-desk?” “Have you guessed the riddle yet?” the Hatter said, turning to Alice again.
“No, I give it up,” Alice replied: “What’s the answer?” “I haven’t the slightest idea,” said the Hatter”

Once again we are so happy to hold a Fundraiser Evening in support of Anthroposophy. This could not happen without the very, very generous support of so many artists who year after year have brought great joy and delight to us all. Also, this event could not be possible without the help
from Anne-Lise (Novalis Institute), Michelle and Silke (Kairos Eurythmy), and Debbie and Caroline (ASWC).
The "Artistic Evening of World Music, Singing & Eurythmy”, for the last 2 years has been a wonderful artistic success and a festive community
gathering and meeting. It can also become a real successful fundraiser if you support it.
