Week Beginning – 29th June – Year One Maths Activities We are going to carry on with time this week. Maths Task 1 Let’s start the week of by going over what we learnt last week. You learnt how to tell the time by the hour and half past the hour. Now, read the statements below and work out the time I am thinking of. What is the time: 1. An hour before 12 o’clock. 2. These questions involve matching the time on a clock to the written time, correctly reading a clock, and identifying the minute and hour hands on a clock. Remember that when the minute hand points at the number 12, it means o’clock, and when it points to the number 6 it means half past.

We are going to carry on with time this week.

Maths Task 1 Let’s start the week of by going over what we learnt last week. You learnt how to tell the time by the hour and half past the hour. Now, read the statements below and work out the time I am thinking of.

Maths Task 1 – Option B For option B, you have some questions to answer. These questions involve matching the time on a clock to the written time, correctly reading a clock, and identifying the minute and hour hands on a clock. Remember that when the minute hand points at the number 12, it means o’clock, and when it points to the number 6 it means half past.

Maths Task 2 You have now recapped your learning from last week. Today you are going document everything you do; from the moment you wake up to the moment you go to sleep! To help you, you are going to need the clock you made last week! During this task, please stick to half past and o’clock.

Use this table below to help you but do not feel like you have to use it. It is simply a template for you to use.

As a challenge, you could include quarter to and quarter past the hour. Don’t feel you have to include this, it is a challenge.

Maths Task 3 Another measurement of time that we use on a daily basis, are the days of the week. We know that they are 7 days in a week, and we talk about these events using today, yesterday and tomorrow.

Think about these questions:- What day is it today?- What day was it yesterday?- What day will it be tomorrow?- What is the first day of the weekend?- What is the first day of the week?

Now you have thought about and answered those questions, here is a worksheet for you to complete:

Extension:Year 1, here is another activity for you to complete.

Challenge Task:

Can you come up with a little rhyme to help you remember the days of the week and the order they are in? For example, we remember how to spell because from this rhyme below.

Maths Task 3 – Option B In Year 1 it is important for children to begin to recite the months of the year and can pick out the special dates within the year, for example, their birthday.

Think about these questions:When is your birthday?Do you know what month Christmas is in? What month do you not go to school?

You are going to need a stopwatch, a piece of paper and a pen/pencil.

1. Follow these activities and see how you get on.

Using a stopwatch, record how many times you can do these activities in 20 seconds.- Star jumps- Write your name - Hop on the spot

2. What other activities can you do carefully that takes you 20 seconds?

Answer these questions using seconds, minutes or hours.- Playtime is about 20 _______ long- The school day is about _______ long - I eat my breakfast in about ____ ______. - Lunchtime is about one _____ long. - I sleep for about 10 ______ long.

3. How would you measure the duration of these activities? In seconds, minutes, or hours? Sort them into three groups. Try recording how long it takes you to brush your teeth and say the alphabet.

Maths Task 4 - Option BAnother way we can measure time is by using the language faster, slower, earlier and later. Children will understand that when someone wins a race, the length of time will be shorter and if someone takes longer the length of time will be longer.

Here’s a question think about:1. Which is longer: one hour, one minute or one second?

One second is one second, One minute is 60 seconds and one hour is 60 minutes

Can you think of a comparison where you use faster and slower in the same sentence? e.g – A rabbit is faster than a tortoise but slower than a cheetah.

Maths Task 5Let’s play time Bingo!! Follow these steps and then get playing! When follow the instructions, see if you can notice any bossy words.

1. First, cut out the time word cards 2. Now, mix them up and put them in to a hat or a bowl3. Next, take it in turns with a parent/sibling, and draw out a time word and read it

out loud. 4. Afterwards, if it is on your bingo card, mark it off with a felt tip. 5. Finally, the person to mark off all of their times and shouts ‘Bingo’ wins!!

As always, you can play this game by yourself. Below are the time word cards and bingo cards.

Maths Task 5 – Option B Look at the worksheet below, write down the time the clocks show. Remember that when the minute hand points at the number 12, it means o’clock, and when it points to the number 6 it means half past.

Challenge:

On this work sheet you are going to draw quarter to and quarter past the hour. When the minute hand is pointing to the number 3, it is quarter past, and when the minute hand is pointing to the number 9, it is quarter to.
