Christmas at Farlingaye C HRISTMAS was great fun. Each

tutor group made beautiful imaginative Christmas hampers, and filled them with delicious food. The best hampers were judged to have been made by: 8R, 7A, 8A, 7F, 9R and 12/13D, 12/13Y, 12/13N, 12/13W and 12/13F. Over 70 were donated to individuals and several local charities and shelters. They were greatly appreciated, and the people who received them sent their heartfelt thanks to the students. We had three wonderful concerts, one in school, one at St Mary’s church and one for over 100 senior citizens.

At the very end of the term, the students were all treated to a pantomime, performed entirely by the school staff. It was a huge hit, with the students roaring with laughter and applause. It ended the term on a high note.

Carol Singing O NE good way to start feeling

Christmassy in the run-up to the festive season is to go carol singing and members of the Chamber Choir had a few opportunities in the weeks before the break. After singing in Woodbridge town centre one Sunday a number of students went on to Marks and Spencer in

Martlesham Heath to serenade shoppers in-store. A collection was taken for charity, and proceeds were split between the M&S charity and our wheelchair appeal. Both shoppers and store staff were highly complimentary of the singing.

The following Sunday over 20 singers sang a programme of carols and other seasonal songs at Sutton Hoo. This was the second Christmas we had sung there, giving two informal concerts to a large and appreciative audience in the drawing room of Edith Pretty's house. This is a really lovely event that is set to become a fixture in the calendar, as long as the National Trust keep inviting us! Thanks to all who took part.

There was more carol singing around school on ‘Christmas Jumper’ Day during lunch time, with a collection being taken. Mr Picton

Christmas CD T HE quality of music-making in

the various concerts at Christmas is second to none. Thanks to Dan Finegan in Year 13 and Mr Deeble we were able to record the concerts and as a result were pleased to produce an audio CD of the h i gh l i gh t s , wh i ch c on t a i n s contributions from nearly all of the ensembles that took part. The CD was sold to raise money for charity and to date has raised nearly £200. There are still copies available; please contact Mr Picton.

Maths Inspiration Lectures M ATHS Inspiration gave a chance

for Year 12 students to experience the UK's most inspiring

Maths speakers live, presenting Mathematics in the context of real-world and fun situations.

In December, 30 students from the school went to see the annual event in Cambridge. The organisers prefer to call the events 'shows' rather than 'lectures', because they are lively, professionally run and entertaining.

Students saw three very exciting and inspiring lectures;

• Statistician Jennifer Rogers spoke about Statistical significance, where she calculated the chance of dying from spontaneous human combustion, the effectiveness of speed cameras and treating the Ebola virus.

• Matt Parker is known as the "stand-up mathematician" and is the only person to hold the prestigious title of London Mathematical Society P o p u l a r L e c t u r e r w h i l e simultaneously having a sold-out comedy show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. With the release of his new book ‘Things to Make and Do in the Fourth Dimension’, he was keen to extol the fascinating virtues of 4D shapes and the 3D shadows they cast.

• The Maths of Life was the topic for Steve Mould who holds a Masters degree in Physics from Oxford. He is one of three mathematicians/scientists who make up the intriguingly titled Festival of the Spoken Nerd. His lecture included finding out the coast line of Britain is infinitely long, how Cicadas use prime numbers to survive and other mathematical Golden ratio surprises.

An inspiring day for all. Mr Trett and Mr Tait

Reading Club R EADING Club has started

2015 with its new team and we’re looking to expand! After a snack and a chat, we break off into our small groups to read aloud with the guidance and support of a volunteer reader. We’re now looking to offer more students the chance to develop their confidence reading out loud. Would your son or daughter benefit from the opportunity to build on the reading skills they will need and use throughout their education? If so, please encourage them to come along on a Wednesday after school. We have a huge variety of books to choose from, including a range of dyslexia friendly novels, and offer a safe, friendly environment where students can thrive whatever their reading ability.

As we expand, we are also looking to recruit more parent helpers and confident student readers. Our helpers lead small groups of three to five students and listen to them read for about 30 minutes, offering advice and support. If you think this is something you could help with, please get in touch via the main school email or phone number. Mrs Silvester, Ms Anderson and Mrs Spurling.

Little Shop of Horrors R EHEARSALS are progressing

really well for this year’s production, ‘L i tt le Shop of Horrors’. A touching, everyday story about a boy, a girl, and a man-eating plant bent on world domination. The performances are Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th

February at 7pm, and Thursday 12th February at 4.30pm and 7.30pm. Tickets are now available - this year all seats will be numbered and can be reserved and p a i d f o r o n l i n e a t www.ticketsource.co.uk (there is a link from the school website). Mr Picton

Reflection Garden L AST term, a group of budding

gardeners came out of lessons to help develop a Reflection Garden in the school grounds. The idea behind the garden is to create a special place to commemorate the lives lost in World War One, one hundred years ago, and other wars. We gathered together with our trowels and spades to plant hundreds of bulbs, including snowdrops, crocuses and daffodils. The gardening team worked enthusiastically and were grateful for the dry weather! The garden is located behind Humanities in the Humanities field. Already some of the shoots are starting to emerge and so we look forward to seeing a riot of colour emerge over the weeks ahead – look out for this fabulous display! Will Charity (9N)

We are very grateful for a generous discount from Notcutts Garden Centre, Woodbridge, which has supported the Reflection Garden.

Art Masterclass O N Wednesday February 25th, we

will be running an masterclass with Christine McKechnie (http://www.christinemckechnie.co.uk/) in the Art Department. Christine will be working with her creative collage techniques and demonstrating how to create a layered mixed media artwork using hand coloured papers. The class will run from 4-6pm and costs £10 which includes materials and tuition. You will need to bring along a series of small sketches of a landscape scene or still life of your choice as design ideas to work with. There are twelve places available for this session.

Please e-mail Mrs T Hetherington ([email protected]) to book a place or for more information. Mrs Hetherington

Doves for Ipswich Hospital O VER the Christmas period students

and members of the community created doves using designs and materials of their choice. On the back of each dove is a personal wish for the future. These have been displayed in the Woolverstone Wing at Ipswich hospital and represent all generations from families who have sent their doves to us from across Suffolk, as well as students and staff from our school community. The Doves provided a decorative splash of colour and pattern to the corridor which has been very well received by patients, hospital staff and visitors. Mrs T Hetherington

U15 Boys Rugby – County Champions!

T HE Year 10 boys’ Rugby squad have been crowned Suffolk County

Champions having won the Ipswich and South Suffolk final in their previous t o u r n a m e n t . D u r i n g t h e t w o tournaments, the team only conceded one try, which was in their final game against local rivals Thomas Mills High School, which Farlingaye eventually won 7-5.

The team won all five games they played and scored an impressive 22 tries in the process!

Well done to all of the boys involved. Mr Wakeley

Sports Hall Athletics

W E entered 2 girls’ teams and 2 boys’ teams in the Ipswich and

South Suffolk Sports Hall Athletics Championships for Years 7 and 8 students. It's an extremely fun event and the students take part in running races of various distances and field events that include shot put, speed bounce and standing triple jump. One of the most hotly contested races on the day is the obstacle relay where students have to run over hurdles and do other challenges as fast as they can. There’s a fantastic team spirit as always and all students did very well in gaining points for their team. The students were very excited to find out that we finished in first place in both the boys and girls competition and as a result they will be competing in the County Final in a couple of weeks. Well done to all the students involved. Miss Alexander

National Cross Country Finals

O N Friday November 28th, 12 girls and two teachers left school in the

morning for the long journey to Newquay for the National Schools Cross Country Finals. Over 8000 runners nationally took part in the first County rounds and the top three school teams from each county were invited to compete in Regional Finals. All

four Farlingaye teams competed in the Regional Finals in Bedford and both girls’ teams just clinched a National qualifying place by finishing third in the region. We also had a very strong Junior boys team but unfortunately they just missed out on a finals’ place.

Both girls’ teams competed well in Newquay against the best 24 schools’ teams nationally. It truly is a team event as the place of the top 4 runners for each school is added together in order to get a team total. The girls knew it was going to be a tough competition because they qualified in third place from the Regional Final but nevertheless they were all determined to do their very best. Unfortunately the Junior team suffered with injuries on the day but those who finished performed admirably and Holly Fisher and Rebecca Clydesdale did very well to finish in 32nd and 40th place.

The Inter girls continued with their fantastic team spirit and all 6 runners finished in the top 90 places in a very competitive field. Anna Firth was the first scorer for the team in, coming home in 37th place. The team finished in a very credible 15th place, which we think is a fantastic achievement!

The PE faculty would like to pass on our congratulations to all the runners who have competed so well in the Schools’ Cup teams this Cross Country season. Miss Alexander

U12 Boys Football

O N a wet and boggy surface Farlingaye’s Year 7 Football team met

Combs Middle School in the Suffolk County Cup Quarter Final. Some of the boys were a little apprehensive about the game, mainly due to the physical stature of their opponents. However, as soon as the game started, the boys performed with confidence, playing some lovely football, with Will Oxborrow and Taylor Sumpter linking up well in the middle and Elliot Baskett and Tom Shannon both looking lively outwide.

It was due to the link of Taylor and Elliot that allowed Will Oxborrow to score the first goal of the game, after a cut back from Elliot, he jinked his way around two

11

23 January 2015 FORUM

players and curled the ball into the top corner.

After this goal, Farlingaye continued to keep the pressure on Combs, not really allowing them to spend much time in the Farlingaye half, with James Leech marshalling the back three very well. Farlingaye’s excellent workrate off the ball led to a second goal shortly before half time, top scorer Tom Shannon capitalising on a defensive lapse to smash the ball across the keeper into the bottom corner.

The second half continued in a similar vein. Taylor Sumpter again led the way, constantly pressing the opposition and providing Will with the ball, who was able to link up with Grant Overitt and Alfie Prior to create the game’s third goal, another Tom Shannon effort. This time he broke free and blasted the ball into the top corner to give Farlingaye a 3-0 lead.

As Combs grew in confidence they did create a few opportunities and both of the Farlingaye goalkeepers Seb Mobee and Raff Dawson had to be on alert on occasions. However, an excellent delivery from Elliot Baskett was met by a powering header from Taylor Sumpter to confirm there would be no Combs fightback and book Farlingaye’s place in the County Cup Semi-Final.

Well done boys, a great achievement that is thoroughly well deserved. Mr Payne

U15 Boys Football

W ITH East Point Academy winning the County Cup last year,

Farlingaye knew they had a very difficult game in store. In the 1st half, East Point

looked to be the only team creating chances to score. After some hesitation in the Farlingaye backline one of the East Point players raced through to slot the ball past Phil Carlstroem. As the half progressed, Far l ingaye became continually more reliant on Phil in goal as he had to make a series of saves in dangerous situations. Fortunately for Farlingaye they managed to get to half time with only a one goal deficit, knowing that they must surely improve in the second half. However, it was East Point who struck first in the second half, a clumsy tackle from a Farlingaye defender led the referee to award a spot kick to East Point, which was duely converted to give them a 2-0 lead.

After a few tactical changes Farlingaye began to grow in confidence, Alex Tripp and Lewis Cowie asserted themselves on the game and Zac Cooper battled well in midfield. With 10 minutes to go Reece Bowater equalised from a corner that East Point failed to clear. With the clock ticking and the referees final whistle looming Lewis Cowie popped up to equalise and send the game to extra time.

Farlingaye then seemed to raise their game further and Alex Tripp proved to be the match winner, he received the ball deep in his own half with his back to goal, carried the ball forward ten yards before unleashing an unstoppable strike into the top corner to win the game for Farlingaye.

The boys showed great character to comeback from two goals down against difficult opposition.

Well done boys Mr Payne
