At Home with the Word:This week’s Readings

Acts 5:27b-32, 40b-41 In the face of persecution and

threat, Peter and the apostles stand firm. Instead of silence, they shout out God’s Good News that Jesus is Risen! They themselves are witnesses to his resurrection and to the forgiveness he brings. How can they keep from singing? Revelation 5:11-14 John’s vision of heaven is filled with exalta-tion and triumph. “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain!” cry all the living creatures and the wise elders. For through his sacrifice, death is defeated! We have all been set free. The wounds of sin have been healed. All is forgiven. John 21:1-19 After the resurrection, the apostles are not sure what to do. They decide to go fishing, to return to what they did before Jesus called them. Then Jesus appears and shows them that they will catch much more if they listen to him. The fishers of fish become fishers of people! Then they have a BBQ on the beach.

“Follow me.” John 21:19

The Eucharist is the Heart of the Church

Help the Senior Meal Program During the month of May the Stewardship Committee is inviting us to bring the following items to help support the work of Neighbors Feed-ing Neighbors Senior Meal Program: albacore tuna, ziplock bags in snack size, sandwich size and one gallon size; cooking spray; Mrs. Dash Seasoning; snack size fruit cups like peaches, fruit cocktail and applesauce. There will be a collection box in the narthex for the month of May. Please be as generous as you can to help this amazing program!

The Church draws her life from the Eucharist. This truth does not simply express a daily experience of faith, but recapitulates the heart of the mystery of the Church. In a variety of ways she joyfully experi-ences the constant fulfilment of the promise: “Lo, I am with you always, to the close of the age” (Mat-thew 28:20), But in the Holy Eucharist, through the changing of bread and wine into the body and blood of the Lord, she rejoices in this presence with unique intensity. Ever since Pentecost, when the Church, the People of the New Covenant, began her pilgrim journey towards her heavenly homeland, the Divine Sacrament has continue to mark the passing of her days, filling them with confident hope. The Second Vatican Council, in its Constitution on the Church, rightly proclaimed that the Eucharis-tic sacrifice is “the source and summit of the Chris-tian life.” And, as the document on priestly ministry states, “For the most holy Eucharist contains the Church’s entire spiritual wealth: Christ himself, our Passover and living bread.” The Church was born of the paschal mystery. For this very reason the Eucharist, which is in an outstanding way the sacrament of the paschal mys-tery, stands at the center of the Church’s life. This is already clear from the earliest images of the Church found in the Acts of the Apostles: “They devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.” (Acts 2:42) Two thousand years later, we continue to relive that primordial image of the church. At every cele-bration of the Eucharist, we are spiritually brought back to the paschal Triduum: to the events of the evening of Holy Thursday, to the Last Supper and to what followed it.
