Math Meet 2013Mathematical Lyrics Contest

Each February, the math department at the College of Charleston organizes a a competition for high school students, the CofC Math Meet. This event brings about 800 students from throughout the Southeastern US (and sometimes even from farther) to the beautiful CofC campus for a day of challenging and entertaining contests in a wide variety of formats and difficulty levels. We are proud to have developed a reputation for having one of the most creative and well run high school math contests.

As part of the preparations for College of Charleston Math Meet 2013, we sent out a request to teachers and participants for famous song lyrics written in the form of mathematical notation. A selection of these will be used as part of the design on this year’s t-shirt.

All of the submissions we received are included in this PDF document. It will probably work best if you view it in “slideshow” or “presentation mode” on your computer so that you can advance to the next page with a

single click or key press and then you can use it for a competition of your own! See how many of the lyrics you or your students can guess from the information given on the first “slide”.

For more information about the College of Charleston Math Meet, visit http://mathmeet.cofc.edu or write to [email protected].

vi. The cover paper for each entry must have the following inf

day of the Math Meet if submitted electronically and not mail

Home Address, E-mail Address, School; Year of Graduation, S

Math Teacher for Verification .

vii. All entries must be received or postmarked by February 14, 2009.

The Questions:1. How many integers x between 0 and 2009 have the property that the line segment joi

(0, 0) and (x, 2009) does not contain any other points (a, b)

integers?2. Find the longest sequence of consecutive positive integers whose sum is 2009.

3. The number 2009 has base 10 digits which sum to 11. For what other bases

of digits in the base b representation of 2009 add up to 11?

4. A right triangle has integer legs and hypotenuse 2009. What is its perimeter?

5. Two circles in the first quadrant are tangent to each other and both tangent to the

to the line y = mx, wherem is a positive constant. Find the ratio of the radius of the lar

circle to the radius of the smaller circle, as a function ofm.

Estimation Station 2008

The “Porter’s Lodge” at the College of Charleston is the small building with three arches

on George Street near the corner with St. Philip Street. When the entire campus was

within the iron gates, this was the only way to get onto the College grounds, and the

porter who lived here was responsible for letting students enter late in the evening after

the gates were locked.

If you look at the back of the Lodge from inside the gates, you will see that there are

three windows on the second floor. (See photo.) Your goal for the Estimation Station

this year is to estimate the size of the diagonal of the center window, from lower-left

corner of the visible glass to the top-right corner of visible glass. (See illustration.)

We have measured this diagonal and rounded the length to the nearest inch. The

winning entry in this contest will be the largest guess that is less than or equal to our

measured length. (In other words, “closest without going over.”) The prize is an

assortment of candies. (If the contest ends in a tie, we will divide the candies among the

winning schools.)Each school is allowed to enter exactly one guess. Write your answer clearly on this

form and put it in the cardboard box labeled “Estimation Station” that is taped onto the

Lodge gate. You can deposit your entry in the box any time between 10AM and 2PM.

Our school estimates that the length is _____________ inches
