HOW DO I SUPPORT MY CHILD AT HOME?
Please understand that the emphasis is no longer on the procedure of the
math. It’s about the thinking. Students should be thinking, “HOW do I
get the answer?” and “WHY is the answer the way it is”
Support the possibility that your child may follow different paths to
answering a math problem and that they may solve a problem differently
than how you may solve it. Expressing answers in different ways and
interpreting illustrations but being able to JUSTIFY the answers.
Don’t rush in with the answer. Discourage the idea that their way of
solving the problem is wrong. Allow them time to explore different ways
to solve problems.
HOW DO I SUPPORT MY CHILD AT HOME?
Question your child by asking:
o “How did you come to this answer?”
o “How do you know its correct”
o “Why did you do it that way?”
o “Why didn’t you do it this other way?”
o “Can you explain to me what you did?”
o “Can you tell me reasons why you did it this way?”
o “Can you explain to me another method?”
o “What was the lesson about today?”
o “What were you trying to figure out?”
