Framing The Session

The SmartBoard technology offers numerous options in bringing real world connections into our classrooms. We will walk through one possibility in introducing transformational geometry in IMPACT Mathematics Course 3 Chapter 6_3rd ed.,2009.

Teaching

Open the file “Math 8_1 Resources.”

Step 1- The first four pages show images relating to reflection, dilation, rotation, and translation.

Step 2- The fifth page has images involving various transformations. Ask participants to examine each image and identify the type of transformation used in the image.

Step 3- Discuss and model inserting pictures. Go to a search engine such as Google. Click on “Image.” Type in a word or phrase. Select the desired picture. Right-click it to copy the image and paste it onto the SmartBoard page.

Teaching

Step 4- The sixth page shows a triangle and a line of reflection. Demonstrate to participants how to reflect the triangle. Model the “Clone” feature.

Step 5- Ask a question: “What do you notice about the image and its reflection?”

Guided PracticeGuide participants through the process of translating and rotating an object on pages 7 and 8, respectively.

Translation on Page 7:

The vector indicates to translate or slide the object five spaces to the right and two spaces down.

Demonstrate two ways to translate: manually plotting the points, and using the cloning feature.

 Rotation on Page 8:

Show participants how to get a protractor and a ruler from the gallery.

Demonstrate the process of rotating the image from the point of rotation.

Getting Started

Take the next 20 minutes to mention that SmartBoard software is very intuitive, and the best way for them to learn it is to explore it on their own. Tell participants what they will be doing during their work time and how much time they have. Create images and their transformational images using the SmartBoard technology and then we will come back together and share.

Work Time

Participants have an option to work in pairs or individually. They will create five to six images. The first four images involve a single transformation. The last two images involve a combination of two transformations.

Participants will present their SmartBoard displays and discuss what they learned.

In small groups, discuss ways that you might use the SmartBoard technology to enhance the introduction of transformational geometry.
