To give feedback on student learning Measure student mastery of long-term learning targets
Gives teachers AND students feedback on student learning ▪ Where is a student at with the targets right now?
Formative in nature, though given toward end of unit ▪ To measure student mastery of unit as a whole
▪ If given at end of unit, how do we use it to make instructional decisions?
NOT meant to be high stakes If students understand that it is to give feedback… ▪ Less anxiety
▪ Less likely to try to cheat
Begin to shape classroom culture – less about “the grade” and more about student learning

Go to Focused Instruction home page (MSP Staff Instructional FI Home Page)
Provide instant data Allows teachers to identify trends (even subtle ones) ▪ Gives teachers the ability to make instructional decisions
Informs students about their progress and learning
To inspire collaboration (common tests = common data language)
Empowers teachers to collaborate in their discipline
Allows principals the chance to help facilitate more focused coaching and collaboration
Enables T&L to make focused, more informed decisions (about PD, curriculum guides, resources, materials, etc.)

The Focused Instruction Model/Cycle:
The CFS Benchmark Assessment protocols, procedures, and practices can be organized in the following way:

4
I can describe the protocols, processes, and procedures
for administering a Focused Instruction Benchmark Assessment in Math or Science.
Session focus questions:
When do I give the Benchmark Assessment in CFS? How do I access the technology needed? How do I assign the test to my students in CFS? What is the student experience like?
MATHEMATICS Give the Benchmark Assessment on paper Tests are a combination of multiple choice AND open-ended
questions
Students record answers to multiple choice questions on
CFS ONLY multiple choice questions on CFS This does not have to be on the same day as paper assessment Students can only take the test on CFS ONE time
NOTE: Questions on CFS are NOT randomized.

MATHEMATICS Determine when you plan to give the Benchmark
Assessment on paper Based on the pacing for the unit
Benchmark Assessments to print are linked to the Unit Planner
Determine when you want students to enter MC answers in CFS
Within 3 days of giving the paper test
Use the CFS Assessment Calendar (handout) to anticipate the availability of the cart or computer lab
Suggestion: Reserve the cart/lab a day or so after the test so that you can use the technology for an entire lesson.

Reserve your iPad cart or computer lab
To Reserve an iPad Cart (or laptop cart): Use the eHelpDesk
See How to Checkout an iPad Cart Using eHelpDesk (handout)
To Reserve a Computer Lab: Follow your building’s procedures
Log into CFS and assign the test to your students
You are in total control of the testing window Recommendation: keep the testing window short (test security)
Assign the test to EACH of your classes Elementary teachers who are self-contained only need to assign to
their homeroom
Elementary teachers who have students outside of their own homeroom students will create dynamic groups (Quick Reference Guide handout will be available, complete with screenshots)

How will I know which test to assign? Be sure to filter by selecting the Content Area, the Course, and by clicking
District Benchmarks Only
All District Benchmark assessments have the same naming structure: CONTENT_GRADEorCOURSE_UNITNAME(abbr.)
Ex. MATH_G04_NUMBEROPS2 MATH_INTALG_EXPONENTIAL
Let’s walk through the assignment
process together!

How much time should this take me?
Once you are comfortable with it, the assignment process in CFS should take 5 minutes or less.
When can my students see the test on CFS?
If the window is open, students can log in and see the test (or even take the test from home or from another class)
Recommendation: select a narrow window (Maybe no longer than an hour or two…it can always be extended if necessary)
What if I schedule the CFS test in advance, but the date is wrong? (assembly, field trip, fire drill, etc.)
If no students in the class have taken the assessment, you are able to Modify or Delete the assignment
If students have take the test, you can Extend the window (see next slide)

9
What if a student is absent?
The end of the window can be extended, even if students have already taken the test
Do not worry about capturing all of your students’ data in CFS
Your Goal: 90% of your students

Expectations about showing work for multiple choice questions (when appropriate)
About their login information How to figure out their username What to do if they do not remember their password
How to log in and navigate CFS Assign practice test in the first few weeks of school Good practice for students AND teacher
How to choose the correct test from their list. Reading the naming structure for CFS tests Cannot just say, “Choose the second test in the list”
How to use an iPad (if you plan on using iPads)
Where to find CFS icon
How to use an computer/laptop (if you plan on using computer)
How to find CFS through school or district pages

MATHEMATICS Double check the assignment in CFS before class starts Modify if necessary
Have students take the Benchmark Assessment on paper
If students will be entering MC answers into CFS on the same day as the paper test… Recommendations:
Give the iPad/laptop (how to fit in computer lab) to the student after they have completed the test
Write down the time that the student is given the iPad Give the student no more than 5 minutes to enter their MC
answers
MATHEMATICS Have students log into CFS to enter their MC answers
(If they have not yet done so)
Be sure that students click Save Completed Test
Should take < 10 minutes
Be sure that students click LOG OUT in CFS
Let’s walk through what students will experience together! (Quick Reference Guide handout will also be available, complete with screenshots)

Create a culture of learning with Benchmark Assessments – NOT high stakes
Keeping Data Integrity The questions are NOT randomized How will you seat students in the classroom/computer lab? How will the test and technology interact?
(Will the students be completing MC on CFS and CR at the same time?) Remember: browsers are not “locked down”
Keeping the Test Secure Set narrow testing windows Tests should not be sent home with students

What the Student Report Looks Like…
Learning Target # Don’t let that throw you. It still corresponds to LT 2.2. Learning Target Text
As it appears on the YAG/CAG
Learning Target Performance Represents how a student did on the MULTIPLE CHOICE questions associated with a learning target (So 50% could mean 1/2; 0% could mean 0/1, etc.)

17
What if a student clicks Save Completed Test but did not answer all of the questions?
Students MUST answer every question.
Important things to remember:
Back to List A potential test security issue
Once the window is open, students can click on Take Assessment, view the assessment, click Back to List and it will look as though they have never opened the test
Prevention? Set narrow testing windows
Students MUST enter an answer to every question
