Why does it look like that? Well, close your eyes and listen to me say the number slowly.

Fifty.

Two.

Open your eyes. Did you hear me say 50? And then did you hear me say 2? That's one reason why we write 50 + 2... because 52 IS the same as 50 + 2. It even sounds the same.

Write 34 in expanded form. ____________________

Add 30 + 4. What does that equal? _______________

Well isn't that tricky?

Ten Thousand

Thousands

Hundreds

Tens Ones

82,926 in expanded form would look like this: 80,000 + 2,000 + 900 + 20 + 6.

Why does it look like that?

Let's start with the 8 in the ten thousands place. How many numbers come after that 8? (4, right?) Imagine turning all those 4s into 0s.

82,926

Here's another way you can think about it:

Numbers in the one's place have no spaces after them, so we don't add any zeroes. So 6 is just six.

6 no zeroes

Numbers in the ten's place have one space after them, so we add one zero. So 2 becomes 20.

20 one zero

Numbers in the hundred's place have two spaces after them, so we add two zeroes. So 9 becomes 900.

900 two zeroes

Numbers in the thousand's place have three spaces after them, so we add three zeroes. So 2 becomes 2,000. (Don't forget your comma!)

2,000 three zeroes

Numbers in the ten thousand's place have four spaces after them, so we add four zeroes. So 8 becomes 80,000. (Where does your comma go?)

80,000 four zeroesWrite these numbers in expanded form:

Expanded Form 6

How do you write a number in expanded form if there is a zero in one of the places?

4 0 , 2 1 3

Millions Hundred Thousand

s

Ten Thousand

s

Thousands

Hundreds

Tens Ones

Well, you could show the zero in your expanded form or you could ignore it.

For example, if you wrote 40,213 in expanded form and showed the zero, it would look like this:

40,000 + 0 + 200 + 10 + 3

If you decided to ignore the zero, it would look like this:

28

Page 29: Math 3 - Unit 1 - Place Value and Expanded Form

40,000 + 200 + 10 + 3

Which seems easier to you? Either way you want to write it is okay.
