Mental states (pain, fear, joy) can be reduced to patterns of
behavior.
“The sugar cube is soluble”
=When placed in water, the sugar cube will
behave by disintegrating as a cube and disperse its molecules into water evenly.

• I am hot, I am cold, I feel pain, are entirely wrong ways of phrasing the phenomenon they try to describe.
• Thus, the old framework will be eliminated.

Eliminative Materialism is betting that neuroscience will entirely replace the way we talk about experience in ‘folk psychology’.
While Identity theory is betting that these explanations (I am hot, I feel pain) will easily transfer over to brain states.

• “I feel hot” = “My humors are out of balance.”

Eliminative materialism argues -- nothing. Like witches or starry spheres.

The essential feature of a mental state is a set of causal relations:
1. Environmental effects on the body.2. Other mental states effect on each other.3. Bodily Behavior (tired etc…).
This is like Behaviorism, but involves more components. Not just envirnonmental input in, behavior out. There are many types of causes—external inputs and internal causes--that lead to behaviors.
Pain comes from bodily damage or exhaustion but sometimes caused by other mental states, e.g. depression.
Not simply pain in- behavior out.

An alien could experience “pain” and function the same as a human, but have an entirely different genetic make-up.
