If you are storing in an area where towing or hauling is required, let’sgothroughthoseproceduresfirst.IamgoingtouseaTennant385 sweeper as the example because that was the machine used in the e-mailrequest.Onecanpushortowthemachineifitisnotrunning.The main propelling pumps have a towing valve to prevent damage to thehydraulicsystemwhenthesweeperisbeingtowed.Youmustturnthevalve90degreesclockwisebeforeanytowingisperformed.Ofcourse you can push the machine from either the front or rear, howev-er, only tow it from the rear. The hydraulic system probably would be damaged if these procedures were not followed.

If hauling a sweeper on a rollback, I prefer to load it in reverse. Alwaysremembertoputthemainbrushandsidebrushintheupposition before loading. The machine can be tied down once on the rollback at the front and rear of the machine. The front tie-down is above the front tires. The rear tie-downs are located on both sides of thetaillightsundertherearbumper.Makesuretheparkingbrakeisset.

Now that you have reached your destination, and have it unloaded, choose a wise spot for storing your sweeper; an out of the way area.

Threethingstokeepinmindare:

1. a level area2. a cool area3. and, it must be dry

Toprepareforstorageyoumustknowhowlongthestorageistotakeplace.Whetheritbe:

1. Upto30days2. 30 to 90 days3. 90 days to one year (or more)

1.Upto30days:Alwaysmakesureyoudumpthedebrisfromthehopper.Try tocleanthehopperasbestonecan.Changetheengineoil.Putthemainandsidebrushintheraisedposition.Themachinemustbeinacool,dryarea.Puttheparkingbrakeon.Makesurethehydraulicfluidisonthe“FullMark”onthedipstick.

2.Tostoremachine30to90days:Performalloftheabovesixitems.Removethesparkplugs.Pourthreeounceof90-ccengineoilineachsparkplughole.Removetheignitioncoilwire.Turntheengine8 to 10 times to distribute this oil to the cylinder walls and pistons. Installnewwiresandplugs.Drainthegasolineoutofthecarburetor.

3.Tostoremachine90days(uptooneyear):Performalloftheaboveitems.Draintheengineoilcompletely.Drainthecoolantfromtheradiatorandengine.Closethedraincocksintheenginecodingsystem.Drainthegasolinecompletelyfromthecarburetor,fueltankand fuel lines.

Jackupthemachineandblockthemachinetosecureitsposition.Again,choosealevelarea.Thisprocedurepreventsthetiresfromacquiringflatspotsonthetires.Haveyoueverseenanoperatorsweepingwithflatspotsonthetires.Ha!Ha!Ijusthavetolaugh,whichleadsmetoanotherstory;no,betternot.Maybenexttime.Coveroverwithagoodheavytarpandtieitdown.

After,takingthesestepsyoucouldtheoreticallystorethismachinefor years, however, I would not recommend storing it, and I would recommend selling it.

WhenIwasakidinthe1970’s,IneverworriedmuchaboutseatbeltsorwhatmighthappenifIdidn’twearone.WhenIbecamea teenager in the 1980’s, it was still not a big deal, since I was used to motorcycles and tractors that didn’t even have them. In the 1990’s, itbecamelawincertainpartsoftheU.S.thatyouhadtowearthemorriskafine;onceagain,nobigdealsinceIcouldaffordthefine.OnlywhenmywifepointedouttomewhatabadexampleIwassettingforournewbabyboydidIchangemyhabits.Shetoldme“ifhe gets hurt or killed because he sees you not wearing your belt and doesthesame,Iwillneverforgiveyou.”Istartedwearingmybeltthat day and only a few years later it saved my life in a serious head on accident, in which I was not at fault but would have been killed without the belt.

I do not know all the regulations across the globe or how people react to seatbelts abroad, but I can tell you how it is here intheU.S.OSHAdoesnotmentiontheword“seatbelt”in29CFR1910.178,theU.S.forkliftstandard,buttheydomakemen-tion of having to train the operators regarding the contents of the operator’s manual, which now almost always would have instructions regarding seatbelt use. They also have several letters of interpretation, whichsaysomebasicthingsthatIwillparaphrasebelow:

1) Anyunitmanufacturedwithabeltbetterhaveoneasgoodor better in place.

2) If they were not made with a belt, then you should be con-tacting the manufacturer and asking if a retrofit is available to make yourliftsafer.Iftheyofferoneyoumusttakeadvantageoftheoffer.Onasidenote,olderelectricunitsneedtohavethebatterypositivelycontained before belting the operator in or the sliding battery might kill the operator in a tip over situation.

3) OSHAwillenforcetheuseofseatbeltsthroughtheir“gen-eraldutyclause.”

Soyoucangetafine,bigdealyoumightsay.IntheU.S.about25%ofthe100+fatalitiesinvolveatipoversituation.Weseeandhear about so many statistics that we forget these are 25 real dead peoplethatdidnothavetodie!Theyweresomeone’sDad,Mom,Brother,Sisterorfriend.Ihaveheardmanystoriesaboutpeopleget-ting killed or horribly injured as the result of being on forklifts that didn’thavebeltsorjustnotwearingthebeltthatwasthere.Ontheother hand, I have never heard of an incident where a person wearing a belt was killed or that anyone was more seriously injured as the result of wearing a belt. This should be a wake up call for companies, trainers and operators around the world to start wearing and enforc-ing the use of belts, because the life you save might be your own, or your friend’s or your child’s.

Save money on freight and avoid damageFreightisoneofthegreatuncertainties

and wildcard variables when it comes to buyingapalletrack.Ourcustomersareoftenunsure of how the product should ship, how much it will cost, and most importantly, what precautions can be taken to ensure it reachesitsdestinationsafely.Becauseourgoal is to help you, we’re just as attentive to freight as you are — if not more so. If our shipping service was shoddy and unpredict-able, we wouldn’t stay in business very long. However,therearestillsomethingscustom-ers can do on their end to help shore up the process, save money on freight and avoid damage if they’re involved in the shipping.

In the outline below, we have some tips on packaging and stacking a pallet to keep in mind.

Tips for damage-free shipping and freight savings

•Knowthedimensionsofyourshipmentand cube out to max on the height of the trailer.Mostcarriersbaseyourshipmentonthefirst12ft,maximizeyourshipmentand keep it under and the savings will be great.Productswithanextensivelengthmay be subject to additional fees.

• Ifrackingisnotalreadybanded,usesteelbanding to keep pallet rack and wire decks from being jostled around during transit. Carrierswillbemovingatspeedsupwardsof60MPH,andlooserackingcompo-nents will bump into each other and the inside of the trailer, often causing damage.

•Usehighqualitypallets.Palletrackingisheavy, and can crush poor quality pallets, as can the pressure of tightly-bound steel banding.Shippingonaflatbed?Getridof the pallets altogether, as they can crush

under tension from the straps when secur-ing the load.
