C.A.R.E. - Clean & C.A.R.E. - Clean & Renewable EnergyRenewable EnergyPresented by: Tim Handy

ObjectivesObjectives• To give students a chance to be actively involved in reducing

the carbon footprint of WSU

• To give undergraduate engineering students a chance to get real world engineering experience through the production of biodiesel

• To provide 50 gallons of biodiesel per week to fuel a WSU garbage truck

• To construct a fuel processor that is safe, effective, and economically self sustaining

November 2, 2007 MME Advisory Board Meeting C.A.R.E.

Current StatusCurrent Status• We are currently in construction of the biodiesel processor• Construction of the processor is expected to be complete by

the end of the fall semester• The processor is located and upon completion will operate in

ELB 59

November 2, 2007 MME Advisory Board Meeting C.A.R.E.

Future Plans for OperationFuture Plans for Operation• Once processor and filtering system is complete participating

students will perform all aspects of the biodiesel production

• Tasks performed will include: Collection of waste oil from Northside dining center Obtaining methanol and potassium hydroxide from central stores Mixing of methoxide (methanol and KOH) and waste oil Working valves and pump to decant and transfer biodiesel Filtering of biodiesel product

• The system will provide a clean burning fuel with feedstock from a renewable source

• The processor is designed so that expansion of the system to produce larger batches of biofuel can be performed with relative ease
