Q. What is Constructed Response Assessment?

A. The new Constructed Response Assessment (CRA) will be a key part of the transition to the Common Core State Standards in Mathematics in grades 3-8 next school year. It will replace the CRA that was previously given in grade 3 for math and ELA and grade 7 for math, ELA, and science. The new CRA will be a performance-based assessment designed to elicit student responses that reflect higher levels of thinking and reasoning.

A. The first assessment will be administered on October 23, 2012The second assessment will be administered on February 20, 2013.A third, summative assessment will be administered on May 14, 2013.

A. Students in third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade will take this series of assessments.

Q. What content will the new CRAs cover?

A. In the 2012-13 school year, grades 3-8 math instruction statewide will focus on the TNCore Focus Standards. These Focus Standards represent challenging Common Core content, and the new CRA will assess these standards with rigorous performance tasks.

Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division

 4th Grade

Extend understanding of fraction equivalence and ordering

Build fractions from unit fractions by applying and extending previous understanding of operations on whole numbers

Q. Will the CRA’s be online or paper based?

A. The CRA will be paper-based.

A. All students (regardless of IEP status) will be allowed to use calculators on the CRA. All IEP accommodations are allowed with the CRA.

Q. Are the CRA’s tied to teacher evaluations?

A. The first two CRA administrations (October and February) are designed to give teachers information about student readiness. They do not carry any stakes for students, teachers, or schools, and the scores will not be made public. The results of the official CRA in May will give us information as a state. None of the CRA’s will affect value added scores or any accountability system.

Conceptual understanding: The Standards call for conceptual understanding of key concepts, such as place value and ratios. Teachers support students' ability to access concepts from a number of perspectives so that students are able to see math as more than a set of mnemonics or discrete procedures.

Procedural skill and fluency: The Standards call for speed and accuracy in calculation. Teachers structure class time and/or homework time for students to practice core functions such as single-digit multiplication so that students have access to more complex concepts and procedures.

Application: The Standards call for students to use math flexibly for application. Teachers provide opportunities for students to apply math in context. Teachers in content areas outside of math, particularly science, ensure that students are using math to make meaning of and access content.
