Global markets are going strong, but the Italiandomestic market is also dynamic, with almostdouble growth rates compared to foreign mar-kets.

The economic figures published by Acimallare clear: in the first quarter of the year, orders inthe Italian woodworking machinery and tools in-dustry increased by 22.7 percent compared tothe same period of 2015, with orders from abroadup by 20 percent and domestic orders up by 37percent.We are still far from the record figures of 2007,more than 35 percent points according to theindex at current prices referred to the first quarter2005, so the glass is half full or half emptyaccording to your attitude. It's half empty if you consider that those resultsbelong to a forgotten economic age, totally differentand impossible to repeat; it’s half full if you thinkthe gap can be bridged and there is a target toachieve.Being optimistic by nature, I would pick thesecond option. But it's not just a matter of optimism:my opinion is also supported by the daily analysisof industry trends, that are clearly recovering, al-though with a different structure compared to tenyears ago.

The industry of woodworking technology is ex-tensive, from sawmilling in forests to furniture lac-quering, from small tools to plants worth severalmillion euro, so an accurate analysis is not alwayseasy. However, one thing is for sure: we are goingthrough progressive consolidation that is splittingthe industry in two: on one side, two or three bigindustrial groups that keep growing, on the other,a multitude of not even medium, but small oreven very small businesses, with niche productsand high technological standards.

The gap between “pocket corporations” andsmall businesses is getting wider and deeper.Having said this, experience teaches that, if themarkets go well, normally that’s true for everyone, although there are obvious differences. So, the atmosphere is quite positive as we appro-ach Xylexpo, where all the big actors will finallybe present, with large halls and their best outfit. The exhibition, celebrating its 25th edition, hasbeen with us over the years, throughout ourworking life. It will be time for celebrations notonly for the exhibition, but also for Acimall, whichhas turned fifty. Our editorial staff will be there as well, so join usto celebrate together...

FAIRSNew site layout unveiled for Ligna

FAIRSBiesse celebrated its successes and its founder Giancarlo Selci

The BiesseGroup hasnow been inexistence fornearly half acentury: ye-ars markedby tenacity, passion andforesight, re-sulting in thesuccess of acompany that employs around 3,200 people wor-ldwide, with revenues at 31/12/2015 of aroundEur 520 million. On 16 April the Pesaro based Group celebratedthis important landmark and its founder, GiancarloSelci, who turned 80 a few months ago. "Una vitain movimento" was the theme of the gala dinner, which ha been attended by about 300 guests. In addition to the Authorities, including MinisterMaria Elena Boschi and Mayor of Pesaro MatteoRicci, business people, politicians, customers, suppliers, and the Group's domestic and interna-tional retailers were present. The evening showed the story of the past, presentand future of the company, highlighting technolo-gical innovation and human capital, the pillars onwhich the group has built its worldwide success. There was excitement and lots of emotion butmore than that. The editor of newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore, RobertoNapoletano, and the Director General of Confin-dustria Pesaro, Urbino Salvatore Giordano, com-manded everyone's attention when they launched

the book "Ma-chine Made"dedicated toGiancarlo Sel-ci and ac-companiedby a videowith best wi-shes fromsome of hisfriends. And then the-

re was quality music with performances by RaphaelGualazzi and "Neri per Caso" who closed theevening with an outstanding "a cappella". Therewas also a charity spot, reflecting the Selci family'sdeep belief in the need to consider the companynot merely a job provider, but also a place to givepeople the opportunity to affirm their humanityand values. The founder Giancarlo Selci, the creative geniusbehind what has dubbed itself a "pocket multina-tional", can now say with satisfaction that he hascreated a model of Brand Italy that has conqueredthe world. Today the Biesse Group employs morethan 3,200 people worldwide, with a particularemphasis on the foreign market (over 46 percentof employees live abroad). It has grown stronglyover the last three years, with almost 400 newstaff, along with revenue growth of 251 millionbetween 2009 and 2015. Indeed, growth "exploded"in 2015 with an overall rate of 21.5 percent com-pared to the year before. ■

Ligna 2017, to be held from 22 to 26 May 2017,features a brand-new site layout jointly concep-tualized by Deutsche Messe, the woodworkingbranch of the German Woodworking MachineryManufacturers’ Association (Vdma) and Lignaexhibitors. There will be a total of seven display categories:Tools, Machinery and Plant for Custom and MassProduction (“Secondary Processing”); Surface Fi-nishing Technology; WoodBased Panel Production;Sawmill Technology; Energy from Wood; MachineComponents and Automation Technology; Fo-restry Technology. The display categories havealso been rearranged for more logical transitionsbetween related topics on site. The market leaders will be spread across severalhalls. The displays that make up the category“Tools, Machinery and Plant for Custom and MassProduction” (in short: “Secondary Processing”)will be sited in halls 11 to 15 as well as in Hall 27. At the upcoming Ligna, “Surface Treatment Te-chnology” gets its own dedicated display in Hall17, which is close to – and thematically related to– the displays of “Wood-Based Panel Production”in Hall 26. Also located in Hall 26 is “Energy fromWood”, right next to “Sawmill Technology” in Hall25. Hall 16 houses a completely new display ca-tegory entitled “Machine Components and Auto-mation Technology”. The topic areas covered bythe exhibitors in Hall 16 – located between “SurfaceTreatment Technology” and “Secondary Proces-sing” – include electric automation, power tran-smission and control, data exchange and auto-mation software. The presentations of “Forestry Technology” willbe housed as before on the open-air site and inthe pavilions beneath the Expo Canopy. Here, too, the new layout will lead to beneficial synergies. The modified spread of displays on the open-airsite is largely shaped around the main stages inthe production chain. ■

EVENTS

SALONE DEL MOBILE.MILANO ACIMALL AT SALONE DEL MOBILE.MILANO

During Salone del Mobile.Milano, “space&inte-riors” made its debut. The first event offered asort of "distant interaction" between interior designmasterpieces and contemporary production ofarchitectural surfaces and decorations. The exhibition route led from furniture tobuilding, going through interior architecture. It reaffirmed the unbreakable link between the in-ternational design show and Design with a capital“D”. This is the meaning of the first edition of“space&interiors”, the exhibition dedicated to ar-chitectural decorations that, during “Fuorisalone”. The exhibition – promoted by FederlegnoArredo, sponsored by Cnappc (the Italian association ofarchitects, landscape architects, planners andconservationists) and organized by Made Expo –was created with a tight link to “Salone delMobile.Milano”. In line with the contents of “Made Expo-MilanoArchitettura Design Edilizia”, it offered Italian andinternational visitors an overview of the latesttrends in construction decorations and supplies, with a balanced approach between innovationand historical culture of interior design. In five days, “space&interiors” hosted 56 manu-facturers of surfaces, floorings, coatings, colors

and decorations, doors, handles, equipped walls, staircases, glass for architecture, facades andcladding, windows, porches, gazebos, curtains, architectural lighting, building automation, homeautomation and entertainment. Over 8,000 visitors came, approximately 30 percentfrom abroad. 83 foreign representatives camefrom 12 countries , plus 70 thousand unique ac-cesses and 200 thousand page views on thewebsite space-interiors.it.The installation concept, curated by Migliore+Ser-vetto Architects Studio, was a huge “wrapping”environment build around the centerpiece “NewComponents Code”: a framework of ten suggestiveinstallations based on a selection of the most si-gnificant products offered by each participatingcompany, associated to some masterpieces ofinterior design to show the evolution of taste andproduction in the decoration field, from the IndustrialRevolution until today. So, “space&interiors” offered designers, and notonly, the opportunity to identify a new roadmap ofliving: a sort of “manifesto for architecture” wherematerials and ideas coexist in a common spaceto enable mutual interaction and cross-contami-nation. (o.r.)

“SPACE&INTERIORS”: TIMELESS CREATIVITY

There was much curiosity for Acimall, the asso-ciation of Italian woodworking technology manu-facturers, at Salone del Mobile.Milano, whereAcimall participated for the first time in collaborationwith Ice, the agency for the promotion and inter-nationalization of Italian companies, and thesupport of a few industry leaders (Biesse Group,Cefla, Elettromeccanica Giordano Colombo, Giar-dina Group and Scm Group). The Acimall stand was designed to put all membercompanies in the forefront, highlighting their rolein this famous exhibition. Videos and picturesshowed the state of the art of woodworking andfurniture industry technology and the peaks ofexcellence it has achieved. The origins, the roots of this industry were repre-sented by two ancient machines, a combinedmachine from 1945 and a jigsaw set from theTwenties, both offered by Fondazione Museodel falegname Tino Sana(www.museotinosana.it).“We had the opportunity to meet a different au-dience – said Lorenzo Primultini, president ofthe Confindustria-member association – achievingthe goal we had set: taking part in this bigdesign event to remind everyone that we havealways been proud actors of this industry!...”

“It was a great pleasure for us to open theSalone doors to Acimall”, said Roberto Snaidero, president of FederlegnoArredo and Salone delMobile.Milano. “We believe it is time to collaborateon several topics, extending our partnershipacross the supply chain to be even more effec-tive...”. “Italy woodworking and furniture technology isan asset known all over the world”, added DarioCorbetta, Acimall director. “We are second onlyto Germany as manufacturers, but we are thebiggest exporters: over 80 percent of the con-cepts, machines and plants produced by our174 member companies are installed in allcountries around the world...”. (l.r.)

The international scope ofSalone del Mobile.Milanotranslated into great suc-cess for the 2016 edition,as shown by the final figuresof the design event at FieraMilano Rho: 372,151 visi-tors (up by 4 percent com-pared to 2014, when thebiennial exhibitions EuroCucina and InternationalBathroom Exhibition were held). On Saturday andSunday, open to the public, 41,372 accesseswere recorded. These figures clearly indicate thatthe recovery of Italian furniture is going on. Thistrend was supported by the strong attraction ofthe event: the 55th edition gathered more than2,400 exhibitors from 160 countries, displayingan offer that represents big efforts and investmentsin research and development, innovation in te-chnology and equipment, and design. The re-covery signs of Italian furniture witness to thestrength of the Italian wood-furniture industry, which closed 2015 with a total turnover of 40.722billion euro, up by 2.7 percent from the previousyear. Once again, the key drivers were “made inItaly” and the production of quality furniture, whichwere divided into classical, design and luxurycategories at the Milan event. The luxury segmentreached apex with the “xLux” show, which certified

the maturity of a productcategory that is mostly po-pular in the American, Mid-dle East and Far East mar-kets. Exhibitors presenteda range of products, fromsingle components to inte-grated furniture sets, thatstarted from classical sha-

pes to create a new contemporary language,a linear design with rich details, finishes, warmand soft valuable materials, offered by theworld's major fashion brands. Several trendscoexist in the design world, revealing a varietyof languages on one side and the capacity todeploy technological innovation on the other. In Milan, the new proposition of high-qualityserial productions as an added value, combinedwith the use of innovative materials and te-chnologies, lives side-by-side with handicraft“gestures” and a taste for technological details, such as creativity expressed through ironyand playfulness. The nostalgia for design fromthe Fifties (and the Eighties as well) gives sub-stance to historical continuity within the searchfor contemporary furniture, also leveraging astrong link to Scandinavian and Asian pro-duction, Japan first. (o.r.)

CSIL: “WORLD FURNITURE OUTLOOK”Also in 2015, the Asia and Pacific region keptrunning on the international scenario, both forfurniture production and for consumption. Thistrend is reported in the new “World Furniture Ou-tlook" presented by Csil during Salone delMobile.Milano. World furniture production in2015 is worthmore than 400billion US dollar.Around 35 per-cent of the valueis exported, whereas 65 per-cent is consu-med in thecountries whereproduction ta-kes place. Overhalf of world fur-niture production takes place in Asia and Pacific,a share increasing year after year. Europe, followedby North America, are the two other main manu-facturing regions on a world scale. Comparingthe figures of global furniture trade in the 2010-2015 period, the “World Furniture Outlook” showsthat in 2010 the Asia and Pacific region represented44 percent of global furniture production, followedby Europe at 34 percent and North America at 16percent. South America lagged far behind at 3percent, Africa at 2 percent and the Middle Eastat 1 percent. According to preliminary estimates by Csil, in2015 the ranking is the same, but market shareshave changed significantly, with Asia and Pacificup to 55 percent, while Europe drops to 26 per-cent, North America remains at 14 percent andSouth America also falls back to 2 percent. Global furniture consumption amounted to455 billion US dollar in 2014, while the estimatedincrease in 2015 is 2.8 percent in real terms. Alsoin 2016, the annual growth rate of furniture con-sumption is expected to reach 2.8 percent in realterms. World furniture consumption in 2015, divided byregion, sees Asia and Pacific on top with a 44percent share, followed by Europe with 26 percent,North America with 22 percent, South Americaand Africa both with 3 percent, and the MiddleEast with 2 percent. In 2017, another increase infurniture consumption is expected, with approxi-

mately 3 percent annual growth in Asia andPacific, followed at close distance by NorthAmerica, and then the Middle East and Africa.Europe is going to stop below 1.5 percent,South America will decrease by 1 percent; inthe latter region, recovery signs can be found

if you expandthe vision to2020 (plus1.5 percentapproximate-ly). In the pastfive years, import to theUnited Sta-tes, grownfrom 19 bil-lion US dollar

in 2009 to approximately 32 in 2015, was themain driver of global growth. The biggest flow of furniture export originatesin China, Germany, Italy, Poland and Vietnamand moves to the United States, Germany,France, the United Kingdom and Canada. Eu-rope is still relatively closed to import from ex-tra-Eu manufacturers, with a 17 percent sharein 2015 against 15 percent in 2010. The Nafta countries, at 33 percent in 2010,reached 39 percent in 2015 and reaffirmedtheir strong propensity to open trade. Asiaand Pacific stand out also from this standpointas a growing region but still closed to importfrom abroad, with a share that has been naileddown at 2 percent from 2010 to 2015. In SouthAmerica market shrinkage is due to the difficultsituation in Brazil, although this market keepsopening up. The Middle East is the second area in terms ofaccelerated growth and openness to import, although those countries now have to face thechallenge of oil prices. Africa recorded a 20 percent increase infurniture consumption. Csil report indicatesthat world furniture trade results will fit into ageneral trend of increasing world Gpd from3.4 percent in 2016 to 3.6 percent in 2017,with different trends between emerging anddeveloping economies.

ACIMALL

IN MEMORY OF “RAMU”,SAD DEMISE V.RAMAKRISHNANI met Sad Demise V. Ra-makrishnan, better knownas “Ramu”, in the early Ni-neties in the past century. Iwas in Singapore, where Ihad organized the Italiancollective booth at Wood-macAsia, a very importantexhibition for the South EastAsian region back then.Even then, Ramu lookedlike the picture you see onthis page: a polo shirt, nohair and a long white beard.Actually, I have never seenhim with a different outfit, not even when I cameacross him in winter in Italy. In Singapore, he was looking for companiesinterested in the Indian market. Ramu was theonly significant agent in India and his organi-zation, based in Bangalore, represented theBritish company Wadkin, a producer of routersnow out of business. Ramu wanted to find re-placements for Wadkin and asked me to intro-duce him to the Italian companies exhibitingat that fair.Maybe for the difficult situation of the Indianmarket, maybe for Ramu’s original outfit, con-tacts with Italian companies did not turn intoreal business, while German competitors trustedthe man so much that Ramu became the ma-naging director of Homag and Leitz in India.

Our relationship continued, andwhen the Acimall board sent meto India at the end of the decadeto set up an international exhibi-tion, I called Ramu who createdsome contacts for me. Then, theexhibition, called Indiawood, debuted in 2000 in Bangalore, organized by the European fe-deration Eumabois instead ofAcimall; but that’s a differentstory. During the first edition ofIndiawood, Ramu and I consi-dered the creation of a trainingcenter for Italian machinery.India was hungry for know-howand a specific school could re-spond to this need, while pro-

moting Italian technology in the country. The ideatook off, we found financial support from Ice, theItalian foreign trade institute, and several companiesdonated the necessary equipment. Awtc-Advancedwoodworking training center was launched inBangalore in 2002 and for a decade it became areference for technological update in the wood-working industry in India. Ramu was the first, un-forgettable director. Long illness has taken Ramuaway. His soul lives on in the memory of what herepresented for our industry and in the memoryof everyone who met him. Thank you for everything,Ramu.

SIXTEEN YEARS OF INDIAWOODThe biennial exhibition Indiawood, the referenceexhibition for the wood industry in India, locatedin Bangalore, was held again in 2016. The firstIndiawood dates back to 2000, with 3,000square meter exhibition area and 103 par-ticipating companies. Total area doubled inthe second edition in 2002, which marked thestart of a biennial cycle and constant expansionof the exhibition: by 2014 it had grown up to38 thousand gross square meters and 580exhibitors, with national pavilions from Germany,Italy, Malaysia, China, the US, Taiwan, Turkey,Canada, France and Sri Lanka. The editionheld last February recorded further expansion, exceeding the 40 thousand square meterthreshold and 650 exhibitors. Indiawood isorganized by Pda Trade Fairs, which alsoowns India’s second major event held in NewDelhi in odd-numbered years. These two eventstake turns to cover the whole market with a ra-tional approach: their alternation is promotedand supported by constant collaboration bet-ween the organizers and Eumabois, the Eu-ropean Federation of woodworking technologymanufacturers. Eumabois is Pda’s historicalorganization partner and promotes the interestsof European exhibitors in Indian exhibitions. The year 2016 was very important for Indiawood;a great success in terms of exhibitors and vi-sitors, as witnessed by several national pavilions. In this context, Acimall, the association re-presenting Italian manufacturers of woodworkingmachinery and accessories, set up a 500square meter pavilion with 16 companies. Thearea could have been larger if there had beenmore space available. The following companiesattended: 2FC Impianti, Ciemme, ColomboEredi & C., Costa Levigatrici, Cotton Roll,Durox, Emme Elle, Freud, Gildo Profilati, Ica,Imeas, Italpresse, Nuova Sivam, Quickwood,Scm Group, Verinlegno. Nine of them areAcimall members. The event opened with anofficial ceremony in memory of Ramu Ra-

makrishnan, a historical agent of European te-chnology in India and a pioneer of woodworkingtechnology development in the country. Generallyspeaking, the technology lineup at the exhibitionwas mainly focused on panel processing, whilesolid wood equipment was more marginal. Therewas a significant number of surface finishingcompanies, while primary operations were almostcompletely absent. The big European actors witha local subsidiary set up huge eye-catchingstands. As usual, the topic of local resellers isquite complicated when it comes to India: apartfrom two or three exceptions, local dealers com-plement their business with local production, especially low-end machines. In the distributionbusiness, a very popular figure is the local agent, mainly used by small companies. The exhibitionrecorded a flow of visitors beyond expectations. The second, third and fourth days recorded thehighest attendance, while the last day was notsatisfactory at all. In this respect, virtually all exhi-bitors agreed that the ideal period would be fourdays. Opinions collected during the event indicatewidespread satisfaction. Visiting operators showedgreat interest for technology. The doubt is to whatextent such interest will turn into real business. However, industry people all see a positive trendof the Indian market. After years of stagnationand a promising market outlook, the companiesthat have kept investing are now finally ripeningtheir fruits.

WOOD TECHNOLOGY:FINAL FIGURES FOR 2015Acimall, the Italian association of woodworkingmachinery and tools manufacturers, has processedthe final figures for 2015. So, it’s time to draw abalance of the year that has just closed and a hi-storical period characterized by alternating eco-nomic trends in the past decade. On the whole,2015 was a positive year for the Italian wood te-chnology industry. Final results pushed all figuresslightly up from the preliminary balance, increasingthe satisfaction of industry professionals. Accordingto the statistics published by the Studies OfficeAcimall a few days ago, production increasedby 11.7 percent from the previous year, reaching1,864 million euro. Definitely a good result, theoutcome of a positive final quarter and a goodstarting point for 2017. As usual, export offered akey contribution achieving an increase by overtwelve percent. However, within this figure, it isworth highlighting the different trends in eachregion. While North America has been a majordriver for the past two years, major countries likeBrazil, Argentina and Russia are experiencing aperiod of depression, mainly due to extra-industryfactors (currency crisis, political instability, tradebarriers and so on). The balance has been offsetby new markets: Iran, Indonesia, India, not tomention Australia… The picture is completed bythe renaissance of the United Kingdom and Spain, especially the latter, which was an inexhaustiblesource of business for Italian companies in thepre-crisis period. Machinery import mainly comesfrom Germany, China and Austria. Although all fi-gures indicate substantial and quick expansion, you have to consider the absolute value of this

parameter, which is relatively low and thereforesubject to significant variations. The trade balanceis traditionally active, and even improving in theyear under scrutiny. Recently a few notes fromthe Acimall Studies Office had shown that thetrade balance of our industry accounts for 5percent of the positive result of the Italian tradebalance. Not bad for a niche industry...The do-mestic market was the big star of 2015. Mostanalysts believe that a rally of the domestic marketis essential for an enduring recovery of the Italianindustry. The Italian government has extendedthe Sabatini-bis law, introduced super-mortgagesand a furniture bonus, but it still seems to be notenough to achieve ideal levels. The result obtainedby our industry in 2015 indicates that this vision istotally correct. A weak start of the year and an ex-cellent final part resulted into an increase by 8.7percent. Another piece of the puzzle: for Italiancompanies, the Italian market is worth 450 millioneuro, while the biggest export market is the UnitedStates, absorbing Italian technology sales for 120million euro. This means that Italy is more thanthree times bigger than the US market. Plenty of figures and a pervasive feeling: it seemsthat the worst is over. The Acimall Studies Officebelieves that Italian companies have the potentialto preserve their market co-leadership with Germancounterparts. Xylexpo 2016 will certainly help un-derstand the health status of industry actors, andthe premises are really encouraging.

LONG LIVE XYLEXPO 2016!

This time it’s no high-sounding statement orslogan. Talking with exhibitors, visiting companieslike we always do, we can clearly perceive thatthe wind has changed. We cannot deny that, in recent years, Xylexpohas suffered from a difficult market situation, par-ticularly in Italy, and this did not help attract exhi-bitors and visitors.

And if you add other situations we want to forgetforever, you can be sure that the years just behindus will not be cherished in the book of memories. The only exception is 2014, the past edition, which offered tangible signs that a new seasonwas beginning and also revealed a new awarenessof exhibitors, who opted for full transparency, counting people, real visitors, rather than "acces-ses".All minor signals, maybe, probably not always soclear, but all steps of a clear plan, the determinationto bring Xylexpo back to its role, to the fame it de-serves and has conquered with many years ofhonorable service. Supported by explicit and wi-despread exhibitor satisfaction for the numberand quality of contacts with visitors.

So, here we are now, looking forward to five daysin the FieraMilano-Rho expo center in Milan, fromTuesday 24 to Saturday 28 May, with differenteyes. Figures clearly indicate that the "new Xylexpo"has accelerated into the right direction: just below30 thousand square meters, 23 thousand of whichassigned to 311 Italian companies and the re-maining 7 thousand to 122 international exhibitorswho decided to attend the biennial internationalexhibition of woodworking technology and furnitureindustry components. These figures will be furtheradjusted upwards, as more registrations arecoming in.

“We are quite satisfied”, said Lorenzo Primultini, president of the exhibition and Acimall, the asso-ciation of Italian manufacturers. “The event willhave a strong innovation focus and 440 ex-hibitors registered so far perfectly know whatthey can expect during the days in Milan andwhat the demanding audience of our exhibitionexpects from them”.“Xylexpo – Primultini continued – is becomingmore and more practical and business-oriented,reflecting a market that is highly focused onany factor that can increase competitiveness. This is very clear to all the big groups that willbe present this year, together with small andmedium businesses that represent a big assetfor our industry”.

Biesse, Cefla, Homag Group, Ima-Schelling, ScmGroup are the brands under the spotlights at theupcoming edition, where – with an unprecedentedresult – all halls are sold out. There is not a single square meter left in Halls 1and 3, dedicated to panel finishing and secondaryprocess, and neither in Hall 2, where primaryoperation will be under the spotlights.

“Considering the number of exhibitors and the30 percent increase in online visitor pre-regis-trations so far, we really believe we can expecta successful May”, commented Acimall’s director

Dario Corbetta. “The Italian market is definitelyshowing encouraging signals, the lineup is com-plete, woodworking technology users can feelthat the wind has changed, and they are seriouslyconsidering to renovate or expand their fleets. This is generating a virtuous circle that Xylexpo2016 will reflect".

ONLINE SERVICESThe organization machine has been running atfull steam in recent weeks, tuning up a set oftools that are mandatory for this kind of event. Asmentioned, on www.xylexpo.com everyone canpre-register for the event, in order to streamlineaccess to the expo center. On the same websiteyou will soon find the interactive hall plans, anew service that will be certainly appreciated, asit helps visitors optimize their time at the exhibition, adding to the existing Apple and Android appsthat will be online in a few days.On www.xylexpo.com you can also access thematch making service, a platform for visitors tobuild their electronic agenda and fix dates withexhibitors; the latter, in their turn, can offer theiravailability to meet visitors interested in a specifictechnology or application.Online services also offer the opportunity to searchthe Xylexpo website for innovations presentedby exhibiting companies: a traditional servicethat has been recording an increasing number ofaccesses since it was opened to visitors a fewweeks ago.

AN INTERNATIONAL PLATFORMXylexpo has always enjoyed a solid reputation ofinternationality. Such success is based on the participation of allItalian and international manufacturers, a lon-gstanding tradition - this year the exhibition is ce-lebrating its twenty-fifth anniversary - and the or-ganizers' commitment to promotion in all majorglobal markets.Promotion activity has secured the participationof several foreign delegations, hosted in a de-dicated area in hall 3. A highlight will be the business mission of theMinistry of Industry and Trade of the RussianFederation, with the aim of developing contactswith Italian and international companies to createnew opportunities in the woodworking industry.A strong contribution to this result was given bythe tight collaboration with the Italian Ministryof Economic Development, which included Xy-lexpo in the top-30 list of strategic exhibitions.Such recognition has developed into a joint actionwith Ice-Italian trade promotion agency, thisyear stronger and more effective than ever.

XYLON TOO...We have played and will play our part: you willfind us in hall 3, stand S30. If you want to meet us, invite us to your stand totake a closer look at your technology or listen toyour stories, we are always ready to join.

In the meantime, we have produced a magazineissue that, as usual, is almost entirely dedicatedto the Milan show: plenty of technical sheets, pro-ducts, stories that will help you get more detailsin a sector that is still very rich and vital.

TALKING ASIDE...Xylexpo will also offer meetings, press conferences, presentations, events. It would take too muchtime now, so we suggest looking up the websitein the "Events" section, where you will find a fewinteresting options. For sure, there will be a couple of significant an-niversary celebrations on May 25. One is the 50th anniversary of Acimall, theConfindustria association that represents Italianwood technology manufacturers and that – asyou all know – is the driver of the exhibition andour magazines.

During the gala evening, the “founding fathers”will be celebrated, as well as all the presidentsthat have chaired the association since 1966.And don’t forget that this is going to be the twen-ty-fifth edition of Xylexpo, so the organizerswill cast their spotlights onto the companies thatwere already there in 1966 and can still be foundin the stands! We suggest you find out the rest for yourself: so,see you at FieraMilano-Rho, from 24 to 28 May,for Xylexpo number 25! (l.r.)

The atmosphere is quite positive. Economic figures are encouraging. All big groups, medium andsmall business, are there. So, all the ingredients are there andwe expect the 2016 edition of Xylexpo to be really good! All we can say is see you at FieraMilano-Rho from Tuesday 24 to Saturday 28 May.

AN INTENSIVE SEASON FOR BIESSE

FOCUS

Great success for the gala evening held in Pesaro lastApril 16, at the Pesaro headquarters of Biesse, a leaderin the production of machinery for wood, glass, stoneand plastics. A big event with hundreds of guests and animpressive layout, designed to celebrate the eightiethbirthday of Giancarlo Selci, a charismatic figure in thewoodworking industry. The birthday party turned into anoccasion to share, and why not, celebrate the targetsachieved by the company, Biesse’s business approachin recent years, the strategies deployed to achieve signi-ficant growth rates, as well as to consolidate the salesand production organization, involving several countriesaround the world. A significant presence was the ItalianMinister Maria Elena Boschi, who gave a short speechmentioning Biesse Group as a success story of innovationand “made In Italy”, a model all over the world. The story-telling started from the Fifties, with video clips, picturesand witnesses, until today, when the current presidentand founder's son, Roberto Selci, took the stage withhis son (who gave a drawing to his grandfather). Generalattention focused on the stage when the directory of thebusiness daily “Il Sole 24 Ore” Roberto Napoletano andthe general manager of Confindustria Pesaro Urbino Sal-vatore Giordano stepped up to present the book “Fatto aMacchina”, dedicated to Giancarlo Selci, edited by BiesseGroup and combined with a video presenting birthdaycongratulations by a few friends. And then, a music per-formance and a charity initiative to reaffirm the Selci'svision of the company not only as a working place, butalso as a vehicle for people to show their humanity andvalues. A big celebration for a "compact multinational”that currently employs over 3,200 people all over theworld, with a strong focus on foreign markets (over 46percent of employees are based outside Italy). Staff ex-pansion in the past three years was significant (almost400 people), as well as revenues (plus 251 million eurorevenues in the 2009-2015 period), literally “exploded” in2015 with a 21.5 percent overall growth rate from theprevious year.A big event, a break in the daily business of a group witha strong focus on technology, as we will certainly see atthe upcoming Xylexpo, where the company is introducingone of its latest projects, called “Smart machines”, the“factory of the future that is here and now”, as they loveto say at Biesse. It’s an integrated batch-one line withmachines that “see, feel and react” faster than thought. It’s Biesse’s implementation of the “Think4ward” concept,a real factory of the future that handles 1,200 parts perminute, managing the entire process from raw material tofinished product, offering workpiece traceability withoutany manual operation, just-in-time processing withoutany stock, total efficiency for the production of semifinishedmaterials and flexibility in production. The plant iscomprised of an automatic storing system “Winstore K2with automated unloading”, a flexible panel cutting system“NextStep” with automated unloading (“Winstore 3D K2”)and a vertical buffer. The following phase is flexible ed-gebanding executed with a “Stream MDS 2.0” machineequipped with a “Winner 1” loading and unloadingsystem. An automatic “sorting” system, a robot with hugepotential, is placed directly upstream the drilling stage, also totally flexible, carried out by an “Insider M” model. The line-integrated robot handles the production sequenceaccording to the strategic drivers of business, enablingmake-to-order. The robot is the director of the entirebatch-one line, managing the production output according

to delivery deadlines, orders or single batches, while ensuring efficient production and opti-mizing the flexibility of the manufacturing pro-cess. This system will be seen at the Pesarosite from 16 May to 11 June. Over the years, Biesse has developed solidexperience in automatic storing systems. Now,with “Winstore 3D K3”, they offer a new op-timal solution to small and medium businesseslooking for a nesting cell with integrated panelstorage, with a “moderate” investment. Thissolution is specifically designed to optimizethe productivity of nesting cells, which would

otherwise require operators and mechanicaldevices to feed the material. “Winstore 3D K3”is integrated with the machine, it serves andreceives commands from such machine, re-quiring only one operator for the total control ofthe entire process. It also supplies the materialexactly when necessary and provides the typeof material required at any moment, withoutthe need to replace the panel stack. This resultsinto higher productivity of the cell and improvedcompetitiveness of the plant. It also supportsthe throughput of the nesting cell, as it is notloaded by operators. “Winstore 3D K3” also

automatically optimizes panel storage, reducinggaps between the stacks. Furthermore, this typeof panel handling virtually eliminates the risk ofdamage panels during the process, to ensuretotal quality. “Winstore 3D K3” is available in awide range of sizes. Each solution is tailored tocustomer requirements: the nesting cell integratedwith “Winstore 3D K3” supports very flexible pro-duction and reduces the final product cost. By maximizing the nesting process flexibility, theautomatic storing system allows to execute anysequence of panels with different colors and fini-shes, with a fully automatic process. The “Winstorefamily” is completed by “Winstore 3D K1”, a de-dicated configuration for high-volume manufac-turers: it can handle up to 400 panels per shift. The “Winstore 3D K2” configuration is designedfor customers requiring high production flexibilityand can handle up to 200 panels per shift.Hall 1, stand A20-D19-D20-F19-A10-F09.

STETONWIDE AND ARTICULATED PRODUCTION RANGE

For those who want to produceefficiently and meet the custo-mers’ requirements with sophi-sticated products and a widematerial variety at the sametime, the Homag Group is theright partner. At the Xylexpo2016 the Homag Group showsall components that are neededfor producing furniture – fromthe saw-storage combination tothe individual packaging – livein action. Special: All machinesat the exhibition provide newand innovative features.

Panel Dividing and StorageAs a concrete example of system solutions, theHomag Group will be exhibiting a combinationcomprising a “Holzma HPP 300” profiLine sawand a “TLF 211” horizontal storage system fromHomag Automation. The two machines work hand-in-hand and can communicate instantly thanks totheir perfectly compatible software. This guaranteesa smooth and highly efficient production process, even for small quantities or batch size 1 production.Furthermore, saw and storage system are fullyprepared to cope with the enormous variety ofmaterials often needed today.Currently, panels with structured surfaces andrelief panels are especially fascinating in the fieldof materials. But as interesting as furniture withhaptic surfaces are, materials that are used fortheir production have so far hardly been totransport in an automated way. But the engineersof the Homag Group handling specialist found away. Panels with structured surfaces are for thefirst time moved through the horizontal storage“TLF 211” in Milan.

“HPP 300” with a wide range of featuresThe saw itself will be equipped with a wide rangeof features so that fair visitors can gain as com-prehensive a picture as possible of its versatility. They will include, among others, the highly efficientextraction system "dustEx", Power Concept Pro-fessional, the 13.5 kW main saw motor for a sub-stantial increase in performance, flocked rollersfor gentle material transport, the manual labelingoption and the thin panels package.Holzma will be showcasing, a “dustEx” highlyefficient extraction system in the cutting line area.In particular, “dustEx” effectively combats dustresulting from dust cuts.

Edgebanding TechnologyThe performance and equipment of the “KAL370”profiLine edge banding machines from Homagcan be freely configured. The profiLine edgebanding machines are suitable for the processingof many edging materials, distinguish themselvesby innovative technology and high quality andalso achieve convincing results in terms of eco-nomy. The modular series offers feeds of 20, 25and 30 m/min and excels in terms of rigid con-struction, optimum edge quality, high flexibility inthe selection of units – and amortizes very fast.A high edge quality not only depends on the pro-fessional use of gluing procedures but also onhigh quality finishing. Through the drive withmodern linear motors the “FK31 powerTrim” di-sposes of a program controlled movement whentrimming the edging stripes on the narrow surfaces

of the workpiece. To minimize resetting times andfor higher quality productivity the following auto-mations are possible: Adjustment to three differentradii and chamfer, adjustment of the tracing rollerdiameter, adaptation of the tracing force andnumber of revolutions. The edge thickness com-pensation measures the edge thickness onceper workpiece and automatically effects the verticaland horizontal correction on the subsequent trim-ming units and multi-scraping units via servo axis.Precision starts with the workpiece feeding system. This workpiece guiding system automatically andprecisely guides the workpieces in longitudinaland crosswise direction into the edge bandingmachine.

Cnc-TechnologyThe new safety technology makes the Weeke“Venture 115” freely accessible from all sides. This Venture 5-axis machine is only one of ninepossible configurations within this series. You willfind 3-, 4- and 5-axis solutions for entering theworld of horizontal Cnc processing. Due to itscompact design the 5-axis head provides moredirect power transmission, and by employingwide bearings extreme rigidity at a relatively smallmachine footprint is accomplished. The machinecan be put in operation within a single day, requires an up to 15 percent smaller footprintand offers the perfect performance class for anyrequirement. The optionally available conveniencepackage is patent pending. It enables to controlcertain functions directly at the machine framewithout requiring input at the operator panel. There was also an addition to the Homag “VentureBMG 300” family. The “Venture BMG 312/V”version creates new opportunities: From now onwoodworking shops and suppliers will no longerhave to opt for 5-axis technology or a machinefor edge banding shaped parts. The new “BMG312/V” combines both technologies in a singlemachine.

AutomationHigh-quality fronts, individual furniture parts, orassembled furniture, goods have correct to bepacked in order to arrive at end-consumer's sitewithout damage. If anyone wants to meet theserequirements, there will be no alternative to tailor-made packaging. Using the cardboard cuttingmachine “VKS 250”, the user consistently realizesthis way in his packaging and logistics chain. Be-cause the “VKS” enables an individual, exactlyfitting packaging in that moment in which it isneeded. Hall 3, stand E01-F01-F02-G01-G02-L02.

GIARDINA GROUP AT XYLEXPO

Final preparations for Giardina Group to exhibitat Xylexpo 2016. Once again, Giardina Finishingand Mauri Macchine have been making longpreparations for this event. The stand in hall 3 willshowcase most of the group's technological por-tfolio over a 400-square-meter surface. Three solutions for panel coating will be exhibited, all flagship products by Giardina: in the forefront, the “Dualtech 601” spraying machine, a high-end solution offering high productivity; few stepsaway, a fully working line to show the brand’s ex-pertise in high-gloss roller coating, consisting ofa laser roller coater “G02/05 Glossy” with vacuumsystem, distension section, and the vacuum Uvoven “GST 1401/2 Glossy”. Giardina is alsoexhibiting a Uv oven with Led lamps, a solutionthat responds to increasing energy-saving de-mands by reducing power consumption for thedrying process, while extending lamp life. To coat disassembled profiles and windows, Giar-dina offers the staining machine “Mini flow-line”and the spraying machine “GS4 Syntech” withpaint recycling belt featuring the proven recyclingand cleaning system “Wet on Wet”, introducedalmost twenty years ago on the entire Dualtechrange; these two machines are particularly suitableto coat disassembled windows, an increasinglyrequested process, most of all for staining andbasecoat application. For door coating, at Xylexpo Mauri Macchine ispresenting the latest generation of “RBP” robot,a solution designed for just-in-time operations, offering high efficiency and flexibility, equippedwith a brand new fully-automated loading andunloading system. Mauri Macchine is extending its profile coatingand finishing portfolio with a new concept ofspraying machine, specifically designed to respondto new developments on several markets lookingfor affordable investments combined with a highquality of equipment and, most of all, coatings. “Xylexpo comes right on time for us”, said Gi-ampiero Mauri, president of Giardina Finishingand Mauri Macchine, during the press conferencein Milan. “We have been working together forfive years and 2015 was an important year withsignificant growth rates. Giardina alone exceeded11 million euro revenues, even beyond our ownexpectations. The early months of this year areequally encouraging, we are proud and satisfiedwith our commitment. Now, as I said, it's time forus to prepare to grow further, and I am confidentthat Xylexpo will help, allowing us to show whatwe have become, what we can do together". There is no doubt that this is a very positiveseason for Mauri Macchine and Giardina Finishing:constant commitment in many global markets isgiving major results, new plants that become va-luable reference to show the potential of thesetwo Italian companies to big groups and small-medium enterprises. A cooperation agreement signed with the subsi-diary of a big group in the Arab and Gulf countriesis bringing unexpected results in that region, andsuch results are bound to improve as they are

supported by leaner and faster operations enabledby collaboration with a local partner. As recently stated by Giampiero Mauri, “2016 willbe a turning point: we have several major projectsin the pipeline around the world and we can an-ticipate the next twelve months will be an intensiveand challenging period, but certainly offeringgreat results. To achieve them, we will keeplooking for strong partners in different markets,to develop networking of knowledge and expertise, and to share knowledge in order to preserve thehighest quality standards". Meanwhile, the big plant built in Kuwait for HassanHabul Group, one of the biggest constructioncompanies in the Persian Gulf, is up and running:five door coating lines that are probably thebiggest finishing plant in the Middle East, with acapacity of one thousand doors per working shift. In 2015, a fully-automated coating plant wascommissioned at Lamigloss in Ankara, Turkey, aGentas Group company, the same group that ac-quired the Italian company Liri Laminati in 2014. In the laminate business – especially Cpl (Conti-nuous pressed laminate) and Hpl (High pressurelaminate) – the group boasts strong leadership. For Lamigloss, Giardina Finishing developed adirect Uv gloss coating line for laminated mdfpanels, a highly-automated solution that offersquality and reliability, thus turning the Turkishcompany into one of the most significant producersof this type of panels on a global scale. Another major order came from Springs WindowFashions, a leader market in America in the pro-duction of shutters and curtains for residentialcustomers, offering a huge catalog of wood andPvc products. Giardina Finishing and Mauri Mac-chine have contributed to this challenging projectwith four robot-assisted spray coating plants de-signed for maximum flexibility: very effective“batch one” solutions integrating leading-edgeunits for paint mixing and color changing. The targets of maximum flexibility, high quality, full repeatability and high reliability have beenachieved… Hall 3, stand R01-R09-T02-T10.

A MEETING WITH ANDREA AURELI

“I really believe we always have to think globally, looking at the world; whether it’s about under-standing competition or searching for new salesopportunities, borders shall not exist. You don’thave to hang on to mature markets, you mustbe aware that everywhere there are great op-portunities”. This is the opening statement of our meeting withAndrea Aureli, Ceo of Scm Group, the Rimini-based giant that, ever since its foundation sixty-five years ago, has been controlled by the Aureliand Gemmani families. A useful meeting to discover a new expansionphase for the group, build on the accurate inter-pretation of real customer needs.

“Our counterparts, our prospects pay more at-tention to what is all around them, to the suppliersthey select", Aureli continues. “They evaluatethe overall solidity of their potential partner, but they also make sure that they have specificknow-how, strong expertise, specialization, prob-lem-solving skills. We can play both roles: aswe belong to the selected group of wood-industry companies that exceed the 500 millioneuro revenue threshold, we can deploy advancedindustrial and sales practices, with an articulatedapproach to customers. But we are also spe-cialists, because we have always relied on"technology teams", each focused on a specificdomain, so as to direct attention and effortsinto a specific direction, often integrating expe-rience and enhancements from other teams”.

This strategy seems to work: the year 2015 wasreally excellent for Scm Group, exceeding revenuesof 500 million euro, 10 percent more than 2014,with a gross operating margin of 56 million, 17million net profits and zero debt. With a 90 percentexport share, 2015 brought extraordinary resultsalso on the Italian market, up by 28 percent. The turnover of woodworking machinery aloneexceeded 380 million euro, 23 percent morethan the previous year, with 17 thousand machinessold globally, whereby working centers and ed-gebanders recorded the best performance. “Ifwe look at the share of revenues from the wood-working industry, we are leaders in Italy”, Aureliadds. “We are the only ones to master so manytechnologies, to have expertise in all the branch-es of wood and wood-based material processing. And we have an exclusive control in somesectors. Think about coating, for instance, abusiness where we feel very strong, especiallyin big orders. We have always been focused onthe definition of new technologies and improvingthe performance of our machines. We are greatmanufacturers, with excellent industrializationskills, we are good specialists with qualities thatwe cannot always highlight properly. We wantour organization to be known more and better,so one of our priorities is communication, tellingabout our customers and their satisfaction withour capacity to build excellent machines, aswell as to define measure-made plants and so-lutions for specific requirements”.

It must be hard to preserve such "expertise lea-dership" while being specialists in many fields,as you said...“We have always been driven by the fear oflosing focus of the things you have to do andthe need to set priorities: over the years, thegroup has gone through many changes, but allwe have done has been directed to encourageeveryone and make the goals clear. Today morethan ever, the group relies on highly specializedfunctions, and those who deal with technologyare really focused and committed, supportedby specific roles and an efficient organization. Our “Engineering Division”, which expandedby 30 percent in 2015, our annual investmentsin innovation representing 5 percent of our rev-enues, 500 patents and over 500 engineers inR&D”.

Talking about big plants, you seem to have in-creased your efforts in this specific area of te-chnology.“Let me tell you that in the past some competitorsdeveloped very sophisticated and expensivesolutions that did not give the expected results, and now we have to deal with customers whoare "confused" by the effort and expertise re-quired to support them. We come from a landthat loves practical things and we have alwayskept our promise, giving customers what wehad agreed and designed together. We havealso made our mistakes, but we have neverbitten off more than we could chew, we havenever offered solutions that implied an excessivelevel of difficulty, You cannot set a performancetarget only to impress your counterpart: wemeasure it out in the field, in factories, in work-shops, where our process specialists analyzeeach step, from initial concept to final testing, with very strict stage-gate sequences. Everythingis accurately measured, documented, reliable.

You are currently the Ceo: what was the impact ofthe owners sitting back at the steering wheel?“I love to weigh the importance of the decisionby the founders' families to hold 100 percent ofcompany shares. Such continuity is definitely avalue. This does not mean it’s easy: a few yearsago we gave it some thought and we realizedthe best decision was to keep control in thehands of the owners. I have a major role, verydemanding, but I am constantly in touch withthe owners”.

The figures of your last financial year are significant, you achieved impressive growth rates... “Today we are selling more and better! Wehave improved exponentially in presenting thequality of Scm solutions to our customers, weare very keen on understanding their expectationsto give them exactly what they expect. We havetuned up our service to achieve very high timeand quality standards, with a team made up ofover one thousand engineers all over the world. The team work and the market is rewarding us.Another example: we have always managed ahuge number of intermediaries around the world. Now we have new tools and a different strategyto handle both sales and after-sales very effec-tively, with all the tools you need to work effi-ciently".

Mr.Aureli, can you comment upon the decision toincrease your involvement in Cms in Zogno, ac-quiring entire ownership? “Cms deserves to be known better, it is a lead-ing-edge business in many advanced sectors, where the Cms brand has always been a refer-

ence, an excellence. The Cms acronym, meaning“construction of special machines", suggeststhe capacity to find solutions that ensurehigher quality of finished products in terms ofaccuracy and deadlines. Such capacity improvesday by day through the collaboration with verydemanding customers like Boeing and Tesla. I must say that Cms staff are really good atidentifying the needs for any new material, fromaluminum to carbon, helping the customer domore, better and with less resources".

One final question: what’s your attitude as youare coming back to Xylexpo, an exhibition thathas been awaiting you for a long time?“A few weeks ago I spent a few days at the fur-niture exhibition in Milan and I had the opportunityto meet business owners who attend an exhibitionone year, and the year after decide to organizean event of their own. Everyone has to adjustmarketing initiatives according to their strategiesand goals. This year we are coming back toXylexpo enthusiastically. I believe this is an ex-hibition that requires a global approach, an op-portunity to meet at an event where the worldmeets and you make decisions with a global vi-sion, expanding your horizons and making bolddecisions, if they serve your purpose".

“FURNITURE ON DEMAND”A “mini-factory in a shop window”, inside ashopping mall, where customers use an “app” todesign the furniture they need, choosing shape, color and size. With few clicks, you move fromscreen to reality: a few dozen minutes and yourfurniture is ready, with several benefits. This is thebest expression of the “Mass customization”concept: design, production and delivery withina very short timeframe, turning the customer intothe designer of his own furniture, which is thenmanufactured with highly automated technology.Such “mini-factory” was installed last April at theshopping mall Brianza in Paderno Dugnano(Milan), as the first prototype of a project thatoffered an amazing preview of future furnitureproduction. The “Furniture on Demand” conceptis part of the “Close to Customer” project, whichinvolves Scm Group and is financed by the Euro-pean Union, with the participation – besides Scm– of ten European partners, including leaders inthe respective industries and major universities. At the core, the innovative Morbidelli “PlanetP800” working center, which can execute all ope-rations, drilling, milling and edgebanding, in avery short time... while the customer does hisshopping!

Markets, opportunities, global challenges, innovation capacity and forward-looking approach.Plenty of discussion topics in this period for Scm Group, ready for a great Xylexpo...

BIG ON DRYENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY SOLUTIONS

BigonDry srl, a company completely “Made inItaly” that produces dry kilns, is strongly engagedin the continuous research for new solutions andtechnologies, focusing in particular on environ-ment-friendly: this is a tangible result the “Thw”plants (Wood Thermo-Modification) and the bigadvantages reached on consumption and envi-ronmental impact, because of reduced emissionand sophisticated control system that allows toreach the maximum efficiency. Thanks to severallab tests, BigonDry had developed the processof Thermo Treatment of many types of essences,European and Exotic, with excellent results, onthicknesses from less than 1mm up to 100mm.Their “Thw” range goes from a net capacity of 4m3 up to 30 m³. The particular configuration ofthe components of the kilns is designed for asimple and economical management, since it’sjust necessary to have available as thermal energy, natural gas or Lpg, electricity and water. Not ne-cessarily requires a thermal oil boiler with all theconsequent expensive management facility. Fur-thermore, thanks to its versatility, it can satisfymultiple functions as Conventional Dryer, Steamer,Sterilizer according to the Ispm-15, Wood Stabilizer,“Thw” (Wood Thermal Modification treatment) upto 230 ° C. The energy balance is favourable be-cause the heat exchange takes place directlyinto the kiln, thus avoiding heating dispersion inthe various intermediate steps. The results obtainedhave confirmed the repeatability of treatments re-sulting in colour, confirming the high quality of thefinal product. The new trend on the use of thehigh temperature treatment system is transforminga same wood in "old wood": such treatment occursat high temperatures, above 100 °C, in conditionsof saturated steam. The purpose is to obtain thebest results in the workability of the wood, and atthe same time, greater durability and stability, with reduced natural tensions, and the eliminationof the resins. The excellent result is the greaterresistance to weather, insects, fungal infectionsand the pleasant appearance of antique wood, where will stand out the natural wood grain andthe intense colour of old durable wood.

Another market that continue to grow is firewoodand biomass: BigonDry has studied specificdrying solutions that dry chips and wood logs, intraditional dry kilns as in “Biolem” kilns, realizedin preprepared container. The range “Biolem”,thanks to his flexibility may be applied to differentsolutions as the drying of forage, chips, firewood.“Biolem” is available from 80 KW to 650 KW. It isalso proposed in combination with a drying con-tinuous system, with mobile grate floor and ex-traction screw conveyor, with automatic unloading, all managed by a simple system of Plc and touchscreen, controllable from computer. SALVADOR: “LET’S BETON XYLEXPO 2016!”

“We believe in Xylexpo and weconcretely prove it. This year,in fact, we will double the sur-face of our stand compared tothe previous editions”, as Chris-tian Salvador, Commercial Ma-nager of the company of thesame name, told the Italian andforeign journalists who partici-pated last February 12th to theInternational Press Conference Xylexpo 2016.“A choice – he continued – that we wanted tomake for many reasons. First of all, to give anadditional importance and significance to thework we have carried out in the last years, a se-rious and constant effort in all those activitieswhich allowed us to grow strongly abroad, byproposing appropriate technologies and organ-izing to stay close to our existing clients, duringand after their decision to invest in Salvador”.“An edition which surely will allow us to make agood impression on the Italian market as well, which undoubtedly became more attentive tothe investments in structural goods, thanks tothe macroeconomic facilities recently put intoplace by the country’s government”, continuedSalvador.

“There are other two elements that positively in-fluenced our decision: firstly the fact that finally, after three years, all world’s most importantcompetitors will be in Milan. Everybody hasbeen expecting this and thus Xylexpo can onceagain become the greatest showcase of “madein Italy” and of the world’s most important offereveryone knows”. “To this important milestonewe must also add the clear efforts of the organ-izers to revitalize this event, too disadvantagedby a “difficult” internal market and by choiceswhich, without a doubt, have not been veryuseful in the recent past”.

Therefore, Salvador returns to Xylexpo with greatconviction and willingness to benefit fully from it,stronger after the last years’ experiences on alllevels, not only technical or productive. In fact, let’s not forget that the Italian brand wasable to win the first XIA-Xylexpo InnovationAward in the “Communication” section in themost recent edition of the fair in Milan, to whichthey recently added another prestigious prize, the “Gold Medal” awarded at Drema in Poznan in2015.

INNOVATIONMany machines will be exhibited at FieraMilano-Rho, also constantly enhanced solutions withhigher performances and new solutions, measures, improvements and new auxiliaries. As, for example, the new software, designed forone of the top models of Salvador’s optimizingand crosscutting saws, the “Superpush” series, which is now available for the angle cutting opti-mizing saw “Superangle600” as well; a successfulmachine, made evenmore versatile by adoptingmeasures which allow notonly to rapidly and easilycut wooden elements atdifferent angles, but alsoto drill, thanks to the re-

spective groups designed and developed for ap-plications in the sofa’s furniture industry, for whichthe company in San Vendemiano is already ima-gining many other uses.In a nutshell, we can say that the drilling group, positioned before the blade, allows for a perpen-dicular drilling of the pieces with diametersbetween 6 and 16 mm, suited for the applicationand/or integration of accessories or hardware inthe manufacturing of increasingly complex sofas. The machine will command four axes overall, of-fering the possibility of working on two boards si-multaneously.Equipped with a separate and independent cellschain loader, in addition to a buffer unloader, thenew version of the “Superangle” will be able towork without the operator’s intervention, substantiallyincreasing the productivity of the companieswhich will choose it.Grouping three different operations (cutting, drilling, automation) that until now were performed bythree different machines will therefore allow, apartfrom high savings on labor costs, to significantlyincrease the automation level, to rationalize thelogistics and to digitize operations that couldn’tbe managed at a flow level before.

Salvador’s warhorses will also be present, com-pletely restyled as well. They include the “Super-push 200”, a very flexible pusher optimizing saw, also available in the “Window” version which –with specific accessories and printed on labelsor on wood – is proving to be a highly appreciatedsolution for the window and door frames industry. There is also space for “Supercut 500”, thefamily which the “Super fast” version is part of,redesigned in the cutting system for greaterspeed, reducing the cutting time to a few hun-dredths of a second, a really excellent resultespecially for those companies that need to cutmany pieces as fast as possible, so as to becometruly competitive and to protect the operators’ sa-fety.In the stand set up at FieraMilano-Rho will bealso exhibited the “Classic 50” and “Classic60”, manual “entry level” crosscutting saws. Theseare “simple” solutions, as reducing as this definitionsounds, as they are totally efficient, safeguardingthe operator’s safety, which has always been atop priority for Salvador.Hall 2, stand F07-G06.

AIRPORDENONE

Giovanni Sedino is the owner of Finiture in Saonara(Padua), a company whose plants are installed by anincreasing number of window manufacturers lookingfor real quality, but without compromising on speedand automation levels that support the competitivenessof a company.“The window industry is transforming like never be-fore: the big producers cannot rely on huge pro-duction volumes any longer. Handicraft production, meaning few windows each day, risks to be nolonger competitive and each process stage has tobe optimized, coating included. Until few yearsago, outsourcing to a subcontractor was just amatter of organization, while today we realize that ifyou also handle this part of the process, it canmake a difference”.However, it’s a tough challenge, because it meansacquiring new competence and expertise, investingin technology and qualified staff. After all, coating isnot just a matter of visual impact, quite the contrary:wood is a wonderful material, but it must be properlytreated and protected. And that's the purpose ofpainting, i.e. ensuring durability. There are many ways to solve the problem, but it'sautomation that makes the difference: if you can workbetter, achieving better results while minimizing envi-ronmental impact and labor, you can win the coatingchallenge.“It happens more and more frequently – GiovanniSedino says – that we bring our solutions into work-shops with a long history, maybe long-time customerswho are trying to transform their business. Veryoften, they have invested in specific working centersfor windows, implementing the just-in-time philosophyto respond to a market where volumes are gettingsmaller and smaller, batches are minimized, andtotal flexibility is requested. They have to handleevery operation from profile cutting to coating, be-cause everything must be aligned, perfectly syn-chronized. As a result, the smartest entrepreneurs, those who want to preserve adequate competitive-ness levels, invest in technology, also in thecoating domain. As I said before, it is imperative to“shorten the supply chain”, to carry out incomingorders completely, in order to be more competitiveand keep a certain level of margin”.

AT XYLEXPO...Spraying robot “Ras” and sanding robot “Rac”.At Xylexpo 2016 Finiture is presenting its latest creationfor spraying automation, the six-axis robot “Ras” that– with the innovative software “Winpaint” – can per-fectly paint all types of interior and exterior doors, from simple to complex ones, with significant time

and product saving. Receiving data from thescanner, the “Winpaint” software generatesthe “Ras” robot axis motion program in realtime, completely unattended. For complexshapes and windows with large depths, the“Ras” robot can be equipped with a 3D scan-ning system. Finiture’s 6-axis “Ras” robot canbe mounted on a moving carriage, which isdriven as 7th axis. This eliminates any limitationto painting length. For instance, the companyhas installed a spraying system for lengths upto 6 meters at several customers. “Winpaint”guarantees painting quality in any case.Next to “Ras”, the Finiture stand will alsopresent “Rac”, an innovative automated sandingsystem for handing parts.

The “Rac” system consists of an anthropo-morphous robot with 6 or more axes equippedwith a sanding brush. Robot motion programsare generated automatically by the “Winsand”software, which processes data collected bya scanning system. At Xylexpo, the company will also exhibit thehorizontal flow-coating line for wood profiles,a recent innovation by Finiture’s Researchand Development department that allows toapply and dry paint on a product within threeminutes. The horizontal flow-coating system“Pro-Flow” is available in several versionsand with different automation levels. The basicversion with manual operation can be equippedwith a humidification system to streamline

LAMELLOCONNECTING WITH THE “P-SYSTEM”

G3 FANTACCIPRODUCTION GROWTH AND EVOLUTION

The “P-System” from Lamello is aninnovative and award-winning joiningmethod. “Clamex P-14”, “Tenso P-14” and “Divario P-18” connectingfittings make an entirely new level offlexibility, speed and simplicity possiblethroughout the design, manufacturing, transport and installation process. The connector's installation and an-chorage system is based on the “P-System®” profile groove. This form-locking anchorage between the wor-kpiece and fitting guarantees maxi-mum retention forces, saves an incredible amountof time and is extremely efficient. The P-Systemgroove for the connector can be milled eitherusing modern Cnc technology or very simply byhand using the “Zeta P2” power tool from Lamello. The real return comes from how easy it is toinstall the fitting – a manual process that does notrequire any tools and can be performed inseconds, without any additional screws or adhe-sive.The “Tenso P-14” is a self-clamping connectingfitting with three functions: alignment, clampingand connecting. It features an extremely – anduniquely – high clamping force that makes it pos-sible to glue workpieces without clamps or presses. As a result, this fitting enables components to beassembled at the most cost-effective stage in thechain, whether at production, storage, transpor-tation or assembly. When gluing workpieces atthe building site, it is no longer necessary to tran-sport clamps and protectors to and from the site,at great effort and expense. Because no clampingdevices are needed, there is also no need to waitfor glue to dry. Excess glue can be easily andquickly removed and, with the “Tenso P-14”, thereis no longer a risk of painted components beingdamaged by the clamps. This significantly shortensthe time required for installation and setup.

Due to its minimal installation depth of 14 mm,the connector can be used in all wood materialsfrom 16 mm thick. The successful “Tenso P-14”gluing aid, with preload function, is now available. The additional option of preloading the connectorprior to glue application now enables its use forall angles and mitres. The individual preloadingof the joining elements considerably reduces therequired amount of force when connecting theworkpieces, which is another benefit to the user.Applications: Furniture, shelve units, built-in cup-boards, kitchen manufacturing, covers, visiblefaces, gluing on the building site, etc.The latest “P-System” connecting fitting, “DivarioP-18”, enables completely invisible connectionsthat meet the highest quality standards and roundsoff the “P-System” family nicely with a new function:a shelf or separation wall can now be insertedinto a pre-assembled structure. The “Divario P-18” also braces the components when they areinserted, creating neat, flush joints. The clampingaction, however, only occurs at certain pointsrather than across the entire insertion length, making the components easier to insert. The con-nector is able to absorb high tensile forces thanksto the press-fit connection between the insertedcomponent and the sides. Thanks to this newconnector, the user has greater flexibility in design

without having to forgo stability. Clampingaids and adhesive are not required toinsert the components. The connector canbe fully or only partially fitted on site. Mo-reover, the fitting can be released for tran-sportation. Applications: Furniture building, interior fit-ting, trade fair construction, shop fitting, residential walls, bookshelves, open roomdividers, wine racks, etc.Hall 3, stand E31

THE FIRST FORTY YEARS OF METAL WORLD

“I can hardly conceal my emotion when I thinkback on these forty years of our story, since wedecided – myself, Enzo, Rino and Giorgio, allPaviotti family members, all cousins of differenttypes – to create a business in tools manufac-turing”.

So says Franco Paviotti, now co-owner withGiorgio of Metal World in Pavia di Udine, as hestarts to tell us about his emotions and a fewdetails about anniversary celebrations. Gettingforty is a major milestone… Years of success andcommitment, leading to the recent decision ofchanging the corporate structure in 2014, withresults you can now perceive as soon as youenter the company. The atmosphere has changed:you can breathe innovation, organization, consi-stency.

“It was a necessary decision to carry on, totackle things in the most effective way. An ex-ample is our new “Showroom”, which representsour determination to show who we are, to exhibitall we can do, all the specific expertise wehave acquired, from micro-tools to planer cutters, achieving speeds up to 600 meters per minute. It’s not enough being good, you have to leteveryone know, informing the largest possiblenumber of prospects about our offer, in termsof products as well as quality, research, appliedtechnology, total control on the end product. This is the direction we have taken to face thenew market emerging from the crisis and domi-nated by manufacturers from countries with lessexperience, poorer industrial culture, but never-theless offering a dynamic range of solutions. There is no alternative: either you think differently,or you are out of business. We decided to carryon, to keep Metal World in business, leveragingour solid tradition and the resources we haveacquired over the years, looking beyond theItalian borders and expanding our focus to dif-ferent areas".

You have always been involved in other industriesand materials, for instance…“Sure. We have matured, we are looking at newopportunities, while taking into due considerationthe situation in which we are acting. The market is often “blurred”: we have to dealwith individual customers, specific requirements, and consequently limited volumes, though stillsignificant. However, today Metal World is an

organization with strong production capacity, capable of handling large orders, producingbig volumes to keep competitive prices, an ef-fective strategy that must be supported by dis-tribution. With this approach – despite the factthat we are based in Italy and not in an emergingcountry – we can achieve excellent results inany market around the world. We can developspecial tools, excellent from all standpoints, but we can and we must also consider volumesand standard production. In Italy, we can findskilled staff and – I want to say it clearly – thesepeople have helped us become what we aretoday, playing a key role during our first fortyyears. In Italy, unfortunately, we have to dealwith a political and economic organization anda financial system that is not always supportive,to put it softly”.

“Looking ahead means fully loading the ma-chines, running them at full steam! We canknock on the door of anyone who needs ourskills, wherever they are. After all, this is the lesson we have learned inforty years. We have made the transition from“sequences”, i.e. operations performed oneafter another, to operators who control multiplehighly automated machines within a productionisland. This is our recipe for competitiveness:extraordinary, certified products with high stan-dards, without any limit to quantity!”.

Will the wood industry be your main businessarea also for another forty years?“Today it represents 80 percent of our productionand I believe that it will remain a very importantbusiness for us. However, we want to reducethe share of “special” custom products from 95to 75 percent... and double production! Wewant to sell more from our catalog and we aresetting up a company that can handle differentvolumes. For this purpose, we are also imple-menting an ERP system to handle all businessfunctions, from cost estimates to re-sharpeningservices. We are not changing our furniture, weare renovating the house, it’s a turning point...probably the best way to celebrate our firstforty years and look at the future".

You mentioned distribution...“Our branches play a key role, offering valuablesupport not only for service, but also for promotionand sales. We have to get stronger also in dis-tribution, to be more proactive and closer toour customers in all the sectors where we aregrowing. I am referring to eyewear, where weare doing great, but also automotive and aero-space, where we have deployed significant ca-pacities with a new and enhanced metrologyroom and new investments in tool productiontechnology: now we can make and guaranteetools designed to achieve specific results anda reliable lifetime. In this area, we have achievedexcellent results through specialization, throughthe creation of functions dedicated to engi-neering, to product enhancement, while as-signing resources to the optimization of pro-duction operations. So, enhanced tools manu-factured in the fastest and most cost-effectiveway… Engineering, process industrialization. Theseare the keywords, our heritage for the next gen-erations, my daughter Fanny, and Giorgio’s chil-dren, Luca and Andrea, for the next forty years!”.

AT XYLEXPO...At the upcoming Xylexpo, Metal World is exhibitingseveral products from its portfolio. In the forefront, the “Cobra Line” boring bits, provided withthrough holes for effective chip removal.Made with next-generation tough materials, theyare designed to achieve excellent performance:air blown into the shank and “shot” through thehole leaves it perfectly clean.

Another new product is “Turbo System”, a rangeof aggregates that – through the generation of acompressed air jet – create “vacuum” that removes97 percent of dust and chips. Easy to use, “Turbo System” can be mountedand removed like a conventional ring nut, providingan ideal solution for nesting, contouring and pro-filing, also at low rotation speeds. It can processany type of panel, from particleboard to fiberglass,it is compact and can be located between 3 and25 millimeters from the working surface. It can beprotected by a corrosion-resistant, wear-proof,anti-static ceramic coating.Hall 1, Stand F02-G01.

Efficiency, ductility and low emissions. These are the features of new “Eos”, a modelpresented by Uniconfort at lasy Mce Expo-comfort exhibition from 15 to 18 March in Mi-lan.The Research & Development division of theVeneto-based company, the world’s third-largestplayer in solid biomass energy conversion, hasdesigned a boiler with an innovative upgradeto the combustion chamber. In previous models, the boiler had a hybrid moving and fixed gratesystems, the materials was burned in staticconditions and the moving grate was only ope-rated to extract combustion ashes. In the new “Eos” featuring innovative Uniconforttechnology, the combustion material is movedby the grate, with the benefit of widening therange of fuel types. The new model, producing hot water at 90°Cand steam, is much more versatile in terms offuel, as it can burn materials that are not ne-cessarily certified, with high moisture levels upto 50 percent. Also the ash extraction systemsis now more efficient to handle high volumes ofresidual ashes. This innovation brings significantsavings in fuel purchase and the possibility toburn self-produced materials with high efficiency. The boiler has already been certified on siteaccording to Uni En303/5 Class 5 standards, showing emission and efficiency levels largelybeyond the minimum requirements of the stan-dards. In detail, efficiency is above 90 percent andthe machine also offers low levels of nitrogenoxide and dust. Uniconfort also launched anew model of “Atom”, the boiler designed forplants between 200 and 500 Kw. The newboiler can burn A1 and A2 certified fuel withmoisture content below 30 percent. It hasalready been certified and comes with emissionand efficiency certificates based on benchtests. Therefore, it does not require onsite certi-fication, thus reducing time and costs to getaccess to different types of loans and subsi-dies.Hall 1, Stand M22-N21.

At Gredathey seem to have succeeded. “It wasn't easy, but in the end we realized that, to do somethingreally new, we had to focus on what we are, what we have always been”, says Marianna Da-schini, co-owner of the company with her brotherPiero. “We started from a one of our flagshipproducts, “Poker”, a machine that has given usgreat satisfaction for many years, not only fortenoning, mortising or boring operations, butalso for more complex milling, contouring andturning. It's a smart, successful technology, unique in the market, from which our engineeringdepartment has developed an entire programof highly innovative machines, the “Poker V”series”. “Basically – adds Piero Daschini, te-chnical manager – we redefined the “Poker”concept to add customizations that allow to ob-tain four new solutions. In this way, we candeliver a perfect machine, equipped with specificaggregates to execute several operations”. In the new “Poker V”, all elements were revisitedto turn this working center into an “open solution”. Let’s go into details, starting from “Poker V1”,designed for the American market and the pro-duction of French doors, i.e. interior doors thatare very popular in the United States. The basicversion has been modified with a large workpiecetable with up to 3,000 millimeter stroke, to load

uprights andcrosspiecesclamped byvertical pres-sure bars. Thethree horizontalm a c h i n i n gunits of “V1”are duly equip-ped to execute slots, tenons, milling and all thenecessary joints to produce the required compo-nents for French doors. “Poker V2” was designedfor applications in the production of chairs, tablesand furniture legs. The base is provided with twotilting tables combined with workpiece turningsystems, so that all the faces of a wooden partcan be machined. The standard cutter and powerspindles execute all the required operations butany vertical machining can be carried out bysimply installing an additional unit. Also “PokerV3” is particularly suitable for the production ofchair and table components and solid wood fur-niture. In this version the base features a loadingtable on one side and a lathe on the opposite, asolution that allows to carry out conventional ope-rations while leveraging the potential of a numericalcontrol lathe, which can also be equipped with aworkpiece loading/unloading system. The familyis completed by “Poker V4”, featuring two lathesand two workpiece loading/unloading systems. Also “V4” can be equipped with additional gouge, knife and sanding unit.Greda’s lineup will also feature other flagship pro-ducts, including the five-axis centers “Diva” and“Sprinter”, and versatile “Mitika”.Hall 2, stand C13-C17-D12-D16.

UNLIMITED CREATIVITYFrom the outside, the site is quite anonymous, concealed in the urban landscape of Seveso, inthe Monza Brianza province. The inside is hometo Figini, a company with almost one century ofhistory and a portfolio ranging from furniture pro-duction to interior decorations for yachts. Everythingis strictly made to measure, relying on solid han-dicraft expertise. It was 1922 when grandpa Vit-torio Figini started his business of high-qualityfurniture sets. Then his son Giuseppe sat at thewheel, together with his wife Marisa, who is nowthe historical memory of the company. Then theirthree children took over in 1986. Linda is incharge for sales and administration, and contactswith customers and designers. Diego is the “heartand soul” of the workshop, supervising production.Vittorio, Internet provider, selects digital technologyfor design and processing. The 2 thousand squaremeter premises of the historical site are currentlyoccupied down to the last millimeter for all themachining and pre-assembling operations of fur-niture and complete sets. The evolution of pro-duction in the Brianza-based company, carriedout by the three owners and three employees, has been driven by the renovation and adaptationof the technological resources to new applications. One of the acquisitions was the hot-forming mem-brane press “Cvm” by Ormamacchine, basedin Torre Boldone (Bergamo). Linda Figini took us on a tour of the family com-pany, telling the “who, what and how” of a businessthat combines handicraft and technology.“Since 1992 we have been in the business ofyacht interiors, and more generally, we havealways produced measure-made furniture, bothfor private customers and for hotel contract. Iam proud to say that we are contacted forspecial and unique creations: we carry out allorders based on architect designs or collabo-rating directly with customers. Our processesare always based on unique pieces rather thanseries furniture, where we are not competitive.... We mainly process wood of selected species. For other materials like glass, steel, pewter orPerspex, we rely on external suppliers we havebeen collaborating with for generations”.

Which are the key technologies for your processoperations? “Our technological assets includenew equipment or machines we have modifiedover time to achieve maximum accuracy andmachining speed, including cutting and splicingsystems for finishing plates, a standard pressfor panel lamination and a web press, a squaringmachine, an edgebander, a sanding machineand a five-axis point-to-point working center. The only operations we have outsourced inrecent years are painting and polishing. UsingIT applications we can generate the machineprogram directly from the 3D drawing, althoughsome operations are still based on the realdrawing, which we print out on paper so thatthe operator has full control, also visually, onthe accurate operation he is carrying out. Onceall components are ready, we perform integral

pre-assembly room by room. This is a criticalstage, especially for boat interiors, because wehave to check the accuracy of all parts, whichcannot be modified when they reach the ship-yard, and ensure the possibility to disassembleand remove all elements for onboard mainte-nance across the entire lifecycle of a boat. Tomake sure that everything is accurate, we pre-pare the furniture for the incorporation of house-hold appliances, Hvac systems and lighting. Some customers deliver real samples or appli-ances to carry out pre-installation and checktests. When the pre-assembly stage has beenpassed, the order is delivered to the customeror directly to the shipyard for installation”.

What has been the contribution of Ormamacchine’smembrane press to your process?“Before we purchased this machine, we wereforced to outsource a portion of operations onpieces with curved shapes which we couldnot carry out internally. As these shapes arevery common in interior design for boats, wedecided to invest in a membrane press thatwould enable us to perform the entire processin house. We have obtained good return interms of processing time and costs, order man-agement quality and production quality also forlarge parts, with the support of experience andmanual skills that have always been vital assetsfor Figini. It was a big step for us, but necessaryto stay in this type of market”.

What’s the current market trend and the futureoutlook? "In recent years we have recorded arelatively stable trend. In 2008 the crisis hadcompletely stopped business in the shipbuildingindustry, so we looked for possible alternatives.Today business has become discontinuous andit's hard to make any plan, especially for materialprovisioning. We follow the developments ofshipyards and the design activity of architectsstep by step, so our operations are increasinglyrelated to real-time requests with very shortdeadlines. This is not a problem, as we areequipped and accustomed to working in thisway, but we hope the market recovers completelyand restores business continuity...”

Maintenance-free energy supply systems andpolymer bearing technology offer reduced dow-ntimes in the woodworking sector. Igus demon-strates that plastic and wood are a winning com-bination for moving applications in the wood in-dustry proposing a wide range of solutions for alubrication-free and maintenance-free wood pro-cessing. Among them, the new four-part “E4.64L”,whose integrated seal prevents the ingress offine dust into the stop dogs.To increase the service life of motion systemsand thereby reduce costs, following the igusmotto "plastics for longer life", the company hasbeen developing tough dry-running machine com-ponents for the wood industry for decades. Inthis way, the chip and dust-proof energy chainsand tubes offer a permanently trouble-free servicelife and an optimum cable protection - even in themost demanding environmental conditions.igus shows its new “E4.64L” energy chain. Dustis accumulated and transported by the rotary pu-sher to outlet openings and carried away. The ty-pical design of the crossbars of the “E4.1L” seriesenables an interior height of 64mm, optimisedcable abrasion behaviour and easily opeanableaccess to the inner and outer radius for the in-stallation of cables and hoses. The integratedsealing system prevents wood dust from gettinginto the stop dog system of the energy chaineven in extreme applications. igus has developedthe “4240AX” series to protect moving energychains securely from dust. Here, an externallypositioned stop dog system prevents the ingressof fine dust.

Therefore “4240AX” is ideal especially for longtravels and promises minimum downtime andmaintenance. Another product with special be-nefitsfor woodworking is the “R2.75” chip-proofenergy supply tube, which can economically andruggedly accommodate cables in an inner heightof 75mm. Double stop dogs and compact designallow dynamic applications that are driven withhigh fill weights and over large unsupportedlengths.A total of 16 “iglidur” full-range materials can beordered online from stock since the beginning ofthe year. With bearings in over 3,000 dimensions, igus has the largest standard range of lubrica-tion-free bearings. The offering has been extendedalso to “dryspin” high helix threads and leadscrew units, so that now there are 5 full-rangematerials available as standard. Similarly the com-ponents of the drylin modular system also under-went a massive expansion. The dirt-resistant lineardry operation can now be carried out by hybridcarriages, which combine the gliding and rollingmotion. Together with the drylin W double railsmade of aluminium, they ensure a noticeablyquiet and smooth motion. One particular innovationfrom the “iglidur” range was the tribo-tape. Extre-mely wear-resistant, with low friction coefficient, easy to cut and to glue; it combines the requirementneeds of the designer and the fitter. With athickness of only 0.5 mm, it can be used even inthe smallest installation spaces to reduce wearand friction anywhereHall 3, stand Q09-R10.

Stark spa is pleased to present "Dynamic Line",the across-the-board line in the market. Alongsidethe "traditional" blades (series "Legend") suitablefor cutting both metal and wood, you will find thenew series "Evolution" (chrome blades for cuttingwood) and "Futurex" (coated blades for cuttingnon-ferrous materials, wood and dry cut). “Evolution”, new chrome-plated/low noise bladeline.Chrome-plated coating is an anti-corrosioncoating that protects the blade from rust and alsoa non-sticking treatment: it helps wood chips toflow better so not to stick on the saw body. The slots are filled with sound-absorbing resingwhich reduces the noise while cutting and alsoreduces vibrations during cutting so to improvefinishing on the work piece."Futurex", Tct circular saw blades coated Pvd"Futurex" coated blades, both new and resharpe-ned, ensure incredibly better performances thanclassical blades. Coating increases hardness onthe cutting edge so to allow the blades less wearout while cutting. The coating acts as a thermal barrier betweenthe cutting zone and the saw body so to avoid

any possible blade deformation. Thanks to thelow friction coefficient, coating allows the bladeto cut smoother and better. While cutting chipsare flowing easily so to improve the finishing ofthe cut (less markes on the surface cut). The benefits of what above described are as fol-lows: reduced machines downtime (granted bythe longer blade life); less machine power absor-ption: thanks to the lower friction while cutting thecoated blade reduces the cutting resistance ;less blade maintenance and grinding costs. The "Futures" sawblade grants high cutting per-formances thanks to the Pvd coating protectingthe teeth and on the saw body. After regrinding operations coating is removed(face and top), but always sticks on the sideedged of the carbide tip where actually thefrictions is present while cutting so to grant alwaysoutstanding cutting performance along the wholeblade life.Hall 2, stand A19.

LEUCO“HIGH-END” EDGE IN THE FURNITURE INDUSTRY

For the furniture manufacturers the issue zerojoint is diverse. For several years, machine andedges manufacturers offer new methods, in whicha heat source such as laser, plasma, hot air or in-frared activates the functional layer of the edgeband material and immediately glues it to theworkpiece. Regardless of the very process, forthe invisible joint optics tear-free and razor-sharpjoined edges are a must. It is exactly this claimwhich the appropriate Leuco tool solutions meet.Together with the furniture manufacturer Leucodiscusses individually every little detail and tailorsthe tools to the very situation.Which wood-based materials are used, what isthe overlay of this material, what does the core ofthe panel look like, which material thicknessesare being processed? Which kind of edge isused? What is the configuration of the machine?

Which and howmany motor unitsare available forthe joining pro-cess? What is theexpected throu-ghput? Which fle-xibility does the furniture manufacturer want tokeep open?Leuco defines the machining sequence and thetool design such as cutting widths, cutting edgetip height and the application data exactly accor-ding to material and machine requirements – withthe tear-free, razor-sharp joined edge, with ma-ximum economic efficiency, in the focus, always. Therefore Leuco recommends jointing cutter witha shear angle of 43° resp. 70°. The interface bet-ween the motor and tool affects the quality of the

joint cutters. There-fore Leuco stronglyadvises to pay closeattention to the con-centricity of toolclamping. “Hydro” or“Hsk” toolholders en-sure the most stableconcentricity. A cleanworking environment

contributes, particularly in the high-endrange with microfine surfaces and tighttolerances at high feed speeds to betterquality. Tools with optimized chip flowdesign and an optimum suction preventthe so-called "multiple hogging" which, among other things, may adversely affectthe jointing quality and reduce the edgelifeof the tools. PAGNONI IMPIANTI“QUICKLINE” AT XYLEXPO 2016

The wide range of presses and pressing lines offeredby Pagnoni Impianti can meet all customers’ requi-rements and specific production capacity needs.Pagnoni can design and manufacture complete linesfor the primary woodworking industry and furnitureindustry. Among its products, the company offerspressing lines for the production of any wood basedpanel and also supplies “Short Cycle Laminationlines” for panel overlaying with melamine papers, multi and single opening lines for panel overlayingwith phenolic films, as well as complete lines for theproduction of thin Hpl panels and compact, tailoredspecifically to customer requirements. At Xylexpo 2016 Pagnoni presents “Quickline” anewly developed press line for Hpl panels andcompact boards production, specially designed toallow, with a small investment, a great flexibility in theproduction of small orders. The outstanding featuresof “Quickline” are: press line for Hpl production withhot/cold cycle; new concept for build-up and strippingof books, with a drastic reduction of personnel and fi-nishing plates investment; extremely fast pressingcycle in the range of approx.25 min. including heating, maintenance and cooling phases; few finishing plates;high-performance and innovative line with great flexi-bility; lower investment compared to the traditionalHpl lines. “Quickline” is designed with a single area, where the simultaneous stripping and build-up of thepaper books is possible, thus reducing the numberof operators to two only. The finishing press plate arenot moved from one area to another but only lifted upto allow the extraction of pressed laminates from thepress and the feeding of paper books to start thenew cycle. The working cycle can be completed in25 minutes, involving two operators always staying atthe same side of the line. Thanks to a properly calcu-lated thermal plant and to a special plate drillingdesign, the “Quickline” press can reach the sameoutput capacity of a traditional Hpl press with feweropenings. With only 4-openings and three finishingplates per opening, can produce 16 laminates perpressing cycle, i.e. about 1000 laminates per day(three working shifts a day for standard production of0,8 millimetres). This capacity is comparable to thatof a traditional mid-size press with a cycle of 60minutes, but with the advantage of having only 24 fi-nishing plates, so less than half of a traditional press, which means a great saving in terms of investmentcost. “Quickline” is particularly suitable for the pro-duction of thick compact as well, where only two fini-shing press plates for each opening are needed, buteven in this case the fast thermal cycle allowsimportant production. Furthermore, Pagnoni Impiantiproposes its great know how and competence in ma-nufacturing hydraulic presses to all those companiesinterested in revamping their existing productionplants, in need to update or upgrade their systemsby means of experienced engineering service teamand the supply of new parts such as hydraulic units, press platens milled and planed with state of the-artEuropean machineries and new concept eco-friendlyheating system for thermal-oil able to reduce theenergy consumption and the pressing time.Pagnoni Impianti provides also a complete assistancefor the installation of the lines including erection,start-up, commissioning and personnel training.Hall 2, stand L12.

Their formulas are based on acrylic resinsand feature high resistance to weather agents,Uv rays and bleaching. The high technologicalstandards of “Holzfreund” coatings ensure ex-cellent film surface hardness and high elasticityeven and high elasticity even at low temperature.Such feature, combined with strong water resi-stance, translate into good film consistency, even in the most critical conditions for windows. With high resistance to blocking, highly transparentand solid dry film, and superior verticality, the“Holzfreund” coatings are particularly suitablefor any application, especially industrial operations, doors and windows, made of any type of wood. Another solution is the “Lasur” family, designedfor the protection of timber constructions, beams, gazebos etc., offering high resistance to weatheragents. For an optimal cycle, two coats of water-based primer “682129 HF Lasur Imp W” shouldbe applied, as its thixotropic features allow toapply coats of suitable thickness even on hori-zontal surfaces, also already installed; to increasewater repellent properties, it is recommended toadd (without intermediate sanding) a water-based topcoat “1714018 Hf Lasur “W” in teakcolor. These painting cycles achieve the dualresult of preserving wood while obtaining excellentvisual impact, enhancing the value of productsover time.

“HOLZFREUND” BY ZETAGI’

Last June, Acimall went to Havana for one of themarket surveys that the association (representingItalian woodworking technology manufacturers)had planned in 2015. The mission was to collectas much information as possible about the currentsituation of the Cuban market. The task turnedout to be quite tough, as local institutions put upseveral barriers and were really pressing us. In 2014, economic activities expanded by 1.3percent, slower than in 2013 (plus 2.7 percent).Gdp development was affected by the reductionof public investments, low productivity in the ma-nufacturing industry, critical climate conditionsand cash crunch from the final quarter 2013.The gross domestic product is made by 70percent of services, 21.7 percent of industrial ac-tivities, and 3.7 percent of agriculture and fishery. In 2015, grow is expected to be around 4 percent,as a result of new investments and rallying import, aimed at revitalizing agricultural and industrialproduction. President Raúl Castro has stressedthe crucial need to stimulate the country’s pro-ductivity urgently. He said that “the actualizationof the economic model is firmly advancing" andpriority should be given to production investments. The current economic development model wasdecided by the Cuban Communist Party Congressin 2011. Recent regulation changes have deliveredpositive results, including an increase of employeesin the private sector, stability of the macro-economic situation, elimination of restrictions ontravels abroad, introduction of credit initiatives forsmall commercial and agricultural businesses.Another key decision was to support foreign in-vestments, by passing a new lay in spring 2014

and creating a Special Development Zone nearthe Port of Mariel. We spent one week in Havana, met several people and institutions, most of allwithin the framework of a "System Mission" orga-nized by the Ice office in Mexico City. The best business opportunities in our industryare closely related to constructions, a sectorthat is attracting the interest of Cuban authorities. The Ministry of Constructions (Micons) decidedto support the flow of incoming foreign investmentsto create new production lines to replace import, recover and introduce new technology.Planned initiatives include a project for the con-struction of a hotel in the tourist resort of Trinidad,Ancon Peninsula. This hotel will look directly ontothe beach with a capacity of 400 rooms. Amongall opportunities, it is worth mentioning the MarielEconomic Zone, a site we visited with the SystemMission. Mariel should be home to the country'snew most important industrial district. We visitedthe site and saw the effort the local governmentis making to create an area suitable for the deve-lopment of new factories. Authorities confirmedthat, once construction works are completed, skilled labor available in the country will beassigned to this area. However, the actual availa-bility of qualified workers, especially in our industry,is all to be demonstrated. During our week in Ha-vana, we could organize a meeting at the Instituteof Agricultural and Forest Research, which, togetherwith Micons, is currently the closest entity to wo-odworking technology industry topics. We madea long interview with the officials in charge for in-ternational relations. Despite the medium-low levelof competence of interlocutors, some interesting

features of Cuba emerged, which are worth mentioning. In the woodworking industry, there seems to be no seg-ment represented by se-condary processing techno-logy; according to their esti-mates, there are 28 com-panies dealing with forestry. They also told us that there are still solid partner-ships with China and Russia, which are consideredpreferential partners. Back to the wood industry,Marta Gonzalez Izquierdo, international relationsmanager, stressed that forest preservation is akey topic for Cuba, but at the same time there isno concept of national production and “made in”.Our review of opportunity closes with the Havanatrade fair. For our survey, we also visited the ca-pital’s exhibition center, a reference infrastructurefor the country, where the most important exhibitionis hosted. Fihav is a general trade fair organizedannually, with increasing participation from Italy. In 2014 the exhibition covered a 20 thousandsquare meter surface. The Italian pavilion measured1,000 square meters and hosted 90 companies. The Italian delegation also included a few instru-mental equipment companies, indicating potentialinterest for this industry. To judge the Cuban market, you have to take intoaccount its recent history. As the country opensup to international trade, interesting opportunitiesare arising, but the road for local and internationalbusinesses to establish solid relations will beneither short nor smooth. The privatization processhas just started and business culture must becreated from scratch. We believe that, for Italianand international companies in general to achievebenefits in the long term, strong determination to

invest is necessary. During the week we spent inCuba, we experienced the difficult approach withCuban counterparts. Delayed meetings, cancelledmeetings or restricted access to offices are justfew episodes that clearly show what kind of diffi-culties you have to take into account. The stateorganization is still predominant and controls vir-tually all major Cuban companies. For the timebeing, local authorities are inevitable as interme-diaries for a long and difficult internationalizationprocess. Talking with representatives of differentMinistries, we had the feeling of great interest butvery poor knowledge. All requests are generaland no specific business plan is requested. Webelieve that a good starting point might be theHavana trade fair, the most important internationalbusiness event in Cuba. Italy already has a solidsystem in this event and a proven working method. An additional remark, and a positive one, is aboutwood, quite appreciated by Cuban people andperceived as an asset to be safeguarded. Thiselement should be taken into consideration in aglobal context where raw material wood is losingmarket shares to composites, plastics and alumi-num. One final note about Ice. The agency isopening a Havana office that will provide Italiancompanies with direct support onsite.

MARKETS

XYLON INTERNATIONAL 29 May-June 2016

NAFTA REGION, A DRIVER FOR ITALIAN EXPORT

The year 2015 was overall positive for Italian export. The trend was characterized by continuous highsand lows and tensions on the Chinese and most of allRussian market did not help Italian wood technologycompanies. Brazil and Argentina are not taking offand the Italian market only shows timid signs of reco-very. However, there is one market that, for one and ahalf year now, has recorded significant and constantlygrowing volumes. It’s the United States and the Naftaregion as a whole, including Canada and Mexico. We want to offer a deeper insight, reporting a surveycarried out within Machines Italia, a permanent ini-tiative by the Italian Foreign Trade Agency focusedon North America. This document analyzes the con-sumption habits of instrumental equipment users inthe Usa, Canada and Mexico. We will now try to sumup the most significant and interesting concepts.Let's begin with general figures to outline the context, size and level of the market under scrutiny. In 2016,the Gdp of the United States and Mexico will bothgrow by 2.8 percent, while Canada will exceed 1.5percent. These figures indicate that recovery is solid, especially in the huge US market. In absolute value, the US gross domestic product exceeds 18 thousandbillion dollar, approximately nine times bigger thanItaly’s and slightly above the entire European Union. All over North America, unemployment rates are verylow on average, between 4 and 6 percent, whilepublic debt, apart from Mexico, is quite high (88percent of Gdp in Canada and 105 percent of Gdp inthe United States). The survey involved 771 companiesin North American in 15 instrumental equipment in-dustries, including woodworking technology. Amongseveral figures, the first that jumps to attention is thenumber of companies using Italian equipment: only189 organizations, representing a 24.5 percent share. Not much... Italian technology certainly has severalstrengths: interviewed users have recognized that“Made in Italy" means quality, durability, precision, speed and strong propensity to innovation. However, they also mentioned weaknesses that Italian operatorsprobably dismiss as “commonplace”: language barrier,hard-to-understand written communications, slow fe-edback to customers and poor English languageversions of Italian websites are all elements thatshould be considered. Spending more time and re-sources in these areas might bring some competitivebenefits. According to available figures, Italian productshave a good quality reputation, especially amongthose who tested them. As many as 52 percent ofusers of Italian technology believe that, with modernequipment, they can execute operations previouslyimpossible. Among those who don’t use Italian pro-ducts, the share drops to 20 percent. What are American customers looking for in foreignproducts? The first answer is efficiency and effec-tiveness, respectively indicated by 44 and 42 percent. Also finished product quality got several mentions.Besides identifying urgent needs, also medium-termvisibility is required, especially for the strategicdecisions of prospects. Another question was aboutthe next strategies of companies. The answers werevaried, although the most mentioned objectives include

product diversification, focus on niche productswith high added value and increasing specializationfor some products. Another topic, probably themost important one for strategic marketers, is theselection of suitable promotion tools to reach thetarget audience. They were also asked to indicatetheir favorite source of information when theyconsider purchasing a new piece of equipment. Most respondents simply request cost estimatesto a number of vendors, without dedicating mucheffort to benchmarking. Let’s get into details. Howmuch are users going to spend in the next twoyears? Most respondents indicated between100,000 and 500,000 dollar; not much, really...But there is a detail we want to point out. AmongItalian technology users, 16 percent are planningan investment beyond 5 million dollar, a very high

share considering the level of expenditure. Let’sclose with a final figure: how far back does thelatest technology acquisition date? Again thereare some differences: among “made in Italy” loyalcustomers, several indicated a recent purchase, less than six months ago. Among other users, thetimeframe is much wider, from six months to threeyears. Of course, it is hard to sum up an extensivesurvey in few lines. However, we believe we havegiven you the key notions and information, which, quite honestly, we found partially surprising andnew to our established vision of this market.“Made in Italy” is still a real asset, it has not beenlost or wasted. It needs to be protected, to bepromoted and to be strengthened. One final pointto be considered: the market is lively, Europeanexport to the Nafta region is growing massivelyand it represents an opportunity that, probably, not all companies are duly considering.
