Ancillary front cover masthead and magazine name selection

Page 2: Masthead selection 3

Since my ancillary front cover was based on Fabulous magazine I chose to roughly replicate their masthead after analysing examples of the Fabulous mastheads, I could easily establish how to construct my own.

Either subjacent over star image or superimposed to it.

Italic font.

One basic colour.

Fits with colour scheme.

Use of lower and upper case fonts.

Masthead font styleI wanted to use a font similar to the Fabulous magazine masthead and so selected some that looked similar and narrowed these down to one final font.

Mistral

Lucida Handwriting

Harlow Solid Italic

The letters were too close together in this font, it is almost ‘unreadable’. The masthead of a magazine must be clear and recognisable

This font was quite ideal however I plan to superimpose an image over the masthead, the font is not clear enough to allow this to be done effectively.

The style of this font appears unprofessional, to use it for the masthead of a T.V magazine would be completely unconventional.

This font is fairly plain, it does not suggest a great deal about the magazine’s genres or content.

Final masthead font choice

This font is very similar to the one used by Fabulous magazine. It is clear, easy to read, and not too plain, making it recognisable which is essential for a masthead.

Masthead titlesI selected various names that would be suitable for my magazine and progressively decided which ones would be suitable and which ones would not.

Glamorous

Splendour

Fab

‘Glamorous’ does not suggest that the magazine contains T.V Related content.

‘Splendour’ suggests too little about the magazine’s content and simply does not sound like a name that would usually be associated with a magazine.

‘Fab’ is far too similar to ‘Fabulous’ and therefore is quite unoriginal.

Extravagance ‘Extravagance’ indicates that the magazine is rich in content however it is a word associated with wealth. This masthead is highly unconventional for a supplementary magazine.

Allure ‘Allure’ does not represent that T.V content that is related to the magazine, it is a name which suggests fashion-related content only. Also after researching a number of magazines I found that ‘Allure’ is already the name of a fashion magazine and therefore I could not use it as my own.

Final Magazine Name choice

ClichéI felt that ‘Cliché’ was suitable for my magazine. Cliché is a French word and therefore signifies that the magazine is associated with fashion and so would appeal to the magazine’s mostly female target audience. The use of ‘Cliché’ is particularly ideal as the magazine is a T.V magazine, soap operas in particular. Most storylines in soap operas are clichés, making it an extremely suitable title for my ancillary product.
