Overview

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence

• Uses technology to sense, learn, reason, and take action

• Substantial impact on everyday lives in the 21st century

• Has the potential to help address some of the biggest challenges

• Human-machine teaming and human intelligence augmentation

Applications

Introduction

Cognitive Science & AI

• The use of AI technology in communication requires good

understanding of human cognition

Applications

“People worry that computers will get too smart and take over

the world, but the real problem is that they’re too stupid and

they’ve already taken over the world.”

Pedro Domingos (The Master Algorithm, 2015)

- Autonomous systems are already deployed in a range of social

institutions, including hospitals, police, insurance, and court;

- We need experts combining knowledge of social and behavioral

sciences with technical understanding of AI functionalities, in order

to assess sustained effects of such applications on our society.

Applications: Mobile phone data

• Many techniques used to analyze large volumes of data were

developed by AI researchers and are now identified as “Big Data”

algorithms and systems

• Ethical, legal, and security considerations

• Example: ‘Who knows what about me?’ (2015)

• A survey of behind the scenes personal

data sharing to third parties by mobile apps

• Of 110 popular free Android and iOS apps,

73% Android apps shared personal information

Such as email address with third parties

Courses & Lecturers

Virtual and Augmented Reality

Hanna

Schraffenberger

Lisa Rombout

• History of VR & AR in the broader context of Mixed Reality

• The use of VR/AR in experimenting, training, and education

• Applicability of VR/AR for data visualization

• Study concepts such as embodiment, sensory

substitution/augmentation, remote handling, immersion, and

presence

• Hands-on experience with Unity3D and editing techniques

Courses & Lecturers:

Probability, Information & Risk Communication

Henry Brighton

• Psychology of risk perception: how people behave

in risk situations and how they learn to interpret

and make informed decisions using statistical

information supplied by experts;

• Techniques used in everyday risk communication,

including those that obscure evidence and

influence rather than inform citizens;

• Effective representations and techniques for the

transparent communication of uncertainty.

Courses & Lecturers:

RS Data Processing

Pieter SpronckAfra Alishahi

• Analyze problems from the perspective of solving them with

a computer;

• Design algorithms to solve these problems;

• Implement computer programs to solve these problems

using the language Python;

• test computer programs to ensure their correct functioning.

• Data Mining

After you completed your Master’s

Our graduates (HAIT)

Are you…

• Curious about technological applications in communication,

psychology and digital humanities?

• Interested in the emotional and reasoning processes

underlying human-computer and human-robot interaction?

• Inquisitive about human language, perception, attention,

memory and behaviour?

• Eager to gain practical experience via applied research

projects and internships with our industrial partners?

Then…

• Come back in the spring and experience the DAF

Technology Lab;

• If you have not done so already, visit the information

market and meet the Chair of our program;
