The Energy to Transform Lives

I am delighted to provide the introduction to this the summer 2014 edition of The Masters’Picture Book. I am just past the halfway mark in my Mayoralty and so I know almost all of youpersonally. Thank you for your support to me, my Consort and the Sheriffs and their Ladies. The picture above shows Sheriff and Aldermen Sir Paul Judge and Sheriff Adrian Waddinghamflanking myself outside Mansion House as we neared the end of one of the traditional events, the Whittington Walk from the Whittington Hospital to Mansion House accompanied by most ofthe mayors of the 32 London boroughs. We provided a colourful procession on a Sundaymorning, resplendent in our red gowns and chains worn of course by every Mayor, and the 6 ½miles passed very easily aided by a coffee stop at Islington Town Hall.

The City of London has a vibrant community and the livery movement is at its heart. While wecan all see and experience the major civic moments with the associated splendid ceremonial,it is the continuous commitment to helping to build a better world for London‘s citizens that hasalways been the hallmark of the livery movement. Dick Whittington, himself a Mercer, embodiesthis for mediaeval times and provides a line which thrives in all livery companies today in theirdifferent charity approaches and focuses. Every time I hear of the charitable support given byeach company, whether this is focused on their trade or profession, education (which is a verysubstantial element) or in different directions I never cease to be amazed. This publication has been generously sponsored by

www.liverycompanies.comAn initiative of the Tylers and Bricklayers Company

Welcome to this 4th edition of the Masters Picture Book. It will be distributedfree to all Masters at the Ironbridge weekend, and to all the Clerks andSenior Wardens of all the livery companies.

It is drawn from the pictures on the www.liverycompanies.com website. We aim to put the pictures of new Masters on the website within a fewdays of their installation, and every month, we publish an update of thisbooklet as a pdf on the website. And, in November, we will produce anotherhard copy edition, which will similarly be distributed to Masters and Clerks.

Websites like liverycompanies.com don’t just happen – they needsomeone to have the idea and who can also command the resources tomake it happen. I was lucky when I became Master of the Tylers andBricklayers in 2011. I found it difficult to remember all the new faces Iencountered, and I had a web design company which could turn the ideainto reality.

Since then, the website has had a lot of help, particularly from Clerks ofthe various companies, and importantly from the generous sponsorshipof Mark Grove of The Cook and The Butler Ltd. And we have beengrateful for the support of the Lord Mayor, Alderman Fiona Woolf who haskindly written the introduction to this booklet, to her Consort, Nicholas Woolf, and to the Livery Committee, who have just launched an interesting anduseful new website at www.liverycompanies.info

I hope that this Masters Picture Book will be helpful to your enjoyment ofthe Ironbridge weekend, and that it will be of continuing use to you afterthat. And I hope I will have the opportunity to meet many of you in the yearahead.
