OVERVIEW

The University of Littoral Côte d’Opale (ULCO, France) is offering an international Master of Science (M.Sc.) program in Marine Ecology, Fisheries and Seafood. This program addresses both fundamental and applied aspects of marine sciences research and management, offering valuable practical knowledge and experience to students interested in careers in research as well as in applied fields. The curriculum is based on common teaching units and on specialization teaching units to choose among two courses: “Fisheries and marine ecology” or “Fisheries and seafood”. All lectures will be taught in English. A special attention is given to a total immersion of students into labs or companies. Face to face courses will be completed by e-learning and various conferences given by international lecturers.

MAIN OBJECTIVES

The Fisheries and Marine Ecology courses aim at training students specialized in conservation and management of marine ecosystems and fisheries. The program addresses ecological issues and challenges based on an in-depth knowledge of marine ecosystems, of their management and on the legal national and international context of their exploitation.

The Fisheries and Seafood courses aim at training students for research and development activities related to seafood authentication, chemical and microbiological hazards and risk analyses.

Students of both specialties aim, as a priority, at continuing their academic training by a Ph.D in order to access professional positions in research, education (university) or to access companies at the doctorate level.

Those who do not wish to continue with a Ph.D thesis will have other career opportunities and could apply for positions in institutions such as engineering consultancies, private and public research institutes/departments, technical centers, local authorities, state agencies, international agencies.

ORGANISATIONAL STRUCTURE

Most of the teams implied in the Marine Ecology, Fisheries and Seafood Master program are part of research laboratories within ULCO namely the Laboratory of Oceanology and Geosciences (LOG, CNRS Mixed Research Unit-UMR 8187), the ANSES (French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety) and BPA (Unit for the Biochemistry of Aquatic Products under contract between Anses, ULCO, and Charles Viollette research Institute). This network is completed by links with local and more than 30 international institutions which are all involved in applied and fundamental research studies as well as in outreach on marine sciences.

SKILLS, EXPERTISE AND KNOWLEDGE ACQUIRED DURING THE ACADEMIC FORMATION

Transversal skills:Living marine resources, their exploitation, management and valuation in an ecosystem approachResearch analytical technologies Numerical analyses Tools and methods for implementing projects in full autonomy or in partnership (team, groups, institutions)As a specialist, express a point of view by phone, during meetings or in writing

For Fisheries and Marine Ecology courses, knowledge and skills in: Ecosystem functioning and fisheries managementEcosystems vulnerability and conservationMarine spatial planningEcosystem modellingPhysics/biogeochemistry coupling

For Fisheries and Seafood courses, knowledge and skills in: Co-products valorizationSeafood microbiologySeafood safetySustainable seafoodFeed formulation, texture, and sensory analyses

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES ACCORDING TO COURSES

Fisheries and Marine Ecology - Researcher in marine ecology and/or in fisheries in research laboratories and institutes - Task officer/field researcher for engineering consultancies, local authorities, state agencies, marine industries, stakeholders and international agencies- Engineer/ecologist in research laboratories/institutions, for survey and observation services

Fisheries and Seafood - Researcher in biotechnologies and molecular biology applied to seafood products in research laboratories/institutes- Research engineer/assistant in private or public research laboratory, industries and technical centers.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

• 1st Year M.Sc. Program (M1) Students willing to apply to the M1 Program should be graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree (B.Sc.) or equivalent in Life Sciences, Agri-Food sector, Environmental Sciences or Earth and Life Sciences and have a B2 English certificate.

• 2nd Year M.Sc. Program (M2) Application to the M2 is opened to: - Students who graduated the 1st year of the M.Sc. Marine Ecology, Fisheries and Seafood - Students who graduated equivalent M.Sc. (e.g. aquaculture, marine sciences) with program and teaching units consistent to those taught within the M.Sc. Marine Ecology Fisheries and Seafood program. In this case, the decision is taken by the educational team after a thorough analysis of the application forms. Students willing to apply to the 2nd year (M2) should have a B2 English certificate.

Knowledge of the English language is considered as a basic requirement. All students must provide evidence of their proficiency in English equivalent to the B2 level.
