This list is reproduced on page 6 inthe memory log of 'Legendary Performer' vol. 1. Take 1 must be on the same tape, but was probably ignoredsince it is a short false start.

Some versions of 'The Sun Sessions' CD contain take 3(whistling intro) instead of take 2(guitar intro) of ILove You Because as track 18. (Thanks to Jan Andersen for comparing)

Maybe the That's All Right outtakes are the first takes recorded since they are located directly after I LoveYou Because on the tape. But this is just a guess.

The released slow outtake of Blue Moon of Kentucky as released by RCA comes from a copy of the GoodRockin' Tonight LP (Bopcat 100) and not from the initially turned over Sun Box #14. The master was neverturned over. RCA had to use a tape transfer of the SUN 78 RPM single.

The "Unknown Selections" have been subject to a lot of speculation. The songs Tennessee Saturday Night

  • The "Unknown Selections" have been subject to a lot of speculation. The songs Tennessee Saturday Nightand Tiger Man are sometimes mentioned. The latter is supported by the fact that Elvis refered to it as "hissecond record" and similar on stage in Las Vegas in August 1970. It's not impossible that Tiger Man was oneof the "Unknown Selections", but then Steve Sholes obviously couldn't be familiar with Rufus Thomas Jr.'sversion on Sun single 188? Incredible that two songs in a row weren't recognized as well. Anyway, it's notvery likely that a proposed second SINGLE would be recorded before the flipside of the first had beenrecorded.

Thanks to Johnny Savage for transcribing the Harbor Lights notes in the Legendary Performer vol.2 booklet.

Notes:Most of the original session tapes were recorded over, probably after 1959. Recovered, surving parts arethought to comprise incomplete I Got a Woman (take 6 or earlier) through I Was the One (take 3 or later),with master takes cut from tape. According to BMG, all complete takes have been released and the outtake ofI Got a Woman released on 'Today, Tomorrow and Forever' is spliced from the intro of the already released'Platinum' take (0:00-0:03, "I got a woman") and the second half (0:59-2:26, "way 'cross town"...end) ofpreviously unreleased take. The missing first minute of the take recorded indicates that this is the first of thesurving parts on tape and since the 'Platinum' version intro was used it could mean there are no other introson tape, which would mean that the 'Platinum' version could be take 7 and the incomplete 'TTAF' versionmight be take 6.

Unfortunately, the 'Today, Tomorrow and Forever' version of I Got a Woman has been ruined by a terriblenoise filter resulting in an almost sinus-shaped signal loss between 4 and 8 kHz, centered at 6 kHz. The resultcould easily be mistaken for "swishy" MPEG artifacts. It has been subjected to hard limiting raising the levelmore than 100%(+6 dB) than the 'Platinum' outtake. This is thought to be about +3 dB above the natural 0 dBlevel and is considered to only slightly decrease the dynamics on very loud vocal parts of this recording.

The masters from this session have yet to be released in decent sound quality.

Notes:The master of I Want You, I Need You, I Love You is listed as being spliced from takes 14 and 17. This ishardly true for any vocal part if the outtake released on "A Legendary Performer" vol. 2 really is take 14. Thefirst vocal part of alternate take 16 (released on the 50's Box) sounds very close to the master. The 5 secondinstrumental intro of the master was either pitched about 1.5% slower or recorded in a lower key and aslower tempo. This 5 second intro could be from take 14 as corresponding pitch adjustment makes it fairlysynchronized with the master.

On both take 14 and 16, Elvis goes up on the first "...with all...". So this part must be from take 17 on thespliced master. There is a dropout on take 16 after 23 seconds.

Perhaps the master was spliced from take 14 (instrumental intro, ~1.5% slower) (0:00-0:005), take 16 (0:05-0:23) and take 17 (0:23-2:41).

The spliced master suffers from dynamic compression.

The correct matrix number of I Want You, I Need You, I Love You ought to be G2WB 0270. It's annonced asG2WB 0270 and that number is printed on the master log. For some reason Jrgensen and Tunzi have alwayslisted it as G2WB 0271.

No other takes of I Want You, I Need You, I Love You have been released although the covers of "I Beg ofYou" and "There's Always Him" say differently. "Take 5" should read take 14 (the announcement is for take5, that's all) and "take 11" is actually take 16.

Notes:The official BMG master of Hound Dog suffers from dynamic compression, pitch problems and extremegeneration loss. The version released on the 1989 Rhino CD 'Billboard Top Rock'n'Roll Hits-1956' (R270599) is as good as it gets. The versions released on the CD's 'Elvis Sings Leiber & Stoller' and the DCC '24Karat Hits!' are better than the usual master as well.

Notes:The master of We're Gonna Move was spliced from take 9 (0:00-2:18) and take 4 (2:18-2:24). It's hard toidentify the final chords (2:24-2:30) as being from any of takes 4 or 9. The spliced master runs almost 1.2%slower than take 9.

The 'Love Me Tender' soundtrack needs to be released with upgraded sound. Even the so-called DSD masters(2003 Heart & Soul/Can't Help Falling in Love CD's etc.) are derived from the limited 1990's masters. TheDCC 24 Karat Hits version is similar, but processed further to sweeten the hiss.

The insert of Paralyzed was probably applied after 2:16.

The insert of Too Much was probably applied after 2:23.

Notes:The master of Poor Boy runs 0.45% slower than the released take 3 and was spliced like this (if take 3 isaltererd by 0.45%):0:00.0-1:14.8 of take 3, 0:41.8- 0:58.6 of take 3 (reprise), 8 seconds of insert and 1:06.7-1:41.0 of take 3. It seems most spliced, 2nd generation masters from 1956 run a little too slow.

The master of Let Me runs about 0.45% slower as well. The vocal track was spliced the following way: 0:04-0:24 has vocal from "solo version", 0:25-1:35 has vocal from the other used vocal take (take 3) and finally,1:36-2:08 has vocal taken from "solo version". "Solo version" is listed as being from both take 3 & 4 in 'ALife in Music'. It could have be a recent splice, but a guess is that it is one take only since 3 & 4 wouldcoincide with the partly different vocal overdub take on the master, also listed as being a combination oftakes 3 & 4 (Sample with Master in Left channel and "solo version" in the Right channel - revealing thedifferent and identical vocal parts.)

Notes:Jailhouse Rock (record version):The master is spliced from 2001-take 6 & 2002(pickup)-take 2. Likely splice point can be identified at 1:15, which isin contradiction with the original MGM time note of 2001-6 (0:55, see original MGM document reprinted in Tunzi's'Sessions', page 322 or Elvis 'Sessions II', page 384). Corresponding RCA tape legend lists the master as 2001-take 6only (see 'Reconsider Baby', page 60), but the same RCA log lists the movie version of Young and Beautiful as take18, with a separate note explaining that it is a spliced version. Young and Beautiful (2004):At least 9 complete takes were recorded, of which 7 have been released by 2005.

Take 18: Released on the Laurel LP 'Jailhouse Rock Sessions' (track 8) and in poor quality on PEJRCD149 (track20). Identified by the responding piano after the first "and I love you so". Sleeve notes on Laurel LP say that this isthe spliced version, but this is not true.

Take 19: A version similar to the record master ("dodo-dodo"-chorus) but with Elvis singing "kiss me tenderly"instead of "never set me free" on the second bridge. It can be found on the 'Jailhouse Rock Sessions' LP (track 3).

Take 22: The RCA record master with "dodo-dodo"-chorus and one bad piano note near the end.

Spliced MGM movie master: This was released on 'Essential 1' with dry (MGM) vocals and is announced as take 12,but the announcement must have survived the splicing process. With timing referring to music only of the movieversion as released on Essential 1, it is spliced like this:

    0:00-0:32 Unknown take(s) (probably take 12)0:32-1:30 Take 18 ("So fill"..."O take this")1:30-1:32 Take 22 ("heart")1:32-1:55 Take 18 ("I offer"..."to")1:55-2:03 Unknown take (probably take 8) ("me")

All songs were recorded in binaural stereo.

    Thanks to Henk Muller.

Notes:I Want to Be Free (record version):Two versions of the record version have been released. Both are basically 2010-11, but the last 8 seconds aredifferent. The version released on 'Essential 1' (with studio dialogue) has dry vocals, implying it was taken fromthe MGM tapes rather than the tape that was sent to RCA. Since the pickup recordings were named pickup 1stending and pickup 2nd ending, it is possible that both the "Essential 1" version and the regular master wererepaired. It is also possible that the last 8 seconds of the RCA master were taken from pickup 2nd ending and the17 seconds before that from pickup 1st ending. Another possibility would be that one of the pickup versions was

  • 17 seconds before that from pickup 1st ending. Another possibility would be that one of the pickup versions wasused for the prison TV version. Don't Leave Me Now (2016):Finally released on the 1997 'Jailhouse Rock' CD.

Don't Leave Me Now (hit record version):RCA received 2 complete takes, take 18 & 21. The better take 18 can be identified by a high piano note at theend.

Notes:It's not clear if the movie version of Steadfast, Loyal and True was recorded during this session. One theory is that itmight have been recorded on the set. Non-Elvis songs recorded for the movie were Turtles, Berries and Gumbo and Banana(sung by LilianeMontevecchi).

Unknown song with the title Bourbon Street is rumoured to have been recorded.

Wear My Ring Around Your Neck (piano overdub) J2WB 0181 February 26 (evening)Overdub M 2:15 Piano overdub after 'Guitar Back Beat' overdub Second to None(but clipped)/50's Box 4

Musicians:'Guitar Back Beat' : Elvis PresleyPiano : Elvis Presley

Notes:Apart from the absolutely insane volume boost on 'Second to None', Wear My Ring Around Your Neck is agreat transfer with nice conservative equalization that could have rectified the situation with the bad early1990's master. Unfortunately every single guitar back beat is clipped severly and this is found very distracting. The amount of audible clipping on this one is indeed second to none.
