Environmental Law, 60 ECTS

Stockholm is the place for transboundary environmental law

Stockholm is closely associated with transboundary environmental law andgovernance. The Master Programme in Environmental Law at StockholmUniversity adds to this position. The United Nations Conference on the Human Environment – the first majorUN conference on environmental matters – was held in Stockholm 1972. Sincethen, new environmental issues have emerged, and they have expanded inscale and scope, so as to comprise the entire biosphere. It is also obvious howenvironmental matters link to other issue areas in transboundary contexts, such as human rights, trade and investments, social rights and development, armed conflicts and corporate responsibility. This shows the importance ofunderstanding environmental law in transboundary contexts. Now, a new opportunity is given for learning and developing creative ideas inenvironmental law in Stockholm.

Transboundary Dimensions and Cross-Cutting Issues

The Master Programme in Environmental Law at the Faculty of Law atStockholm University centres on transboundary dimensions and cross-cuttingissues. The transboundary dimensions of environmental law are reflected in thedevelopment of international and EU law on numerous matters where theadverse effects of human activities cross state borders. The transboundarydimensions can also be seen in the development of general notions, principlesand instruments of environmental law and governance. An obvious example ishow international human rights law has expanded to embrace environmentalmatters. The cross-cutting issues in environmental law refer to cases and contextswhere the legal approaches, principles and concepts to protect theenvironment integrate, collide or clash with other areas of law.
