“Our educational leadership programs are dedicated to

preparing and supporting knowledgeable, skilled, and caring education-

al leaders who are capable of promoting and sustaining excellence in our

nation’s and global societies’ diverse learning communities. Developing

personal leadership, building leadership capacity, leading learning com-

munities, promoting culturally proficient practice, and serving as stew-

ards of purposeful and meaningful change are key themes that weave

throughout our leadership curriculum and student learning experiences.

We believe that our graduates hold compelling visions for a better edu-

cational future and that they are able and ready to translate their visions

into results-oriented actions, in collaboration with others, in the present

and future learning communities in which they will serve.”

For more than 35 years, Pepperdine has been at the forefront in training effective school

leaders who are able to conceptualize and understand learning communities in diverse

social, cultural, political, economic, and legal environments.

In a unique, cohort-based setting, the Educational Leadership Academy (ELA) is a

master’s degree program that is dedicated to preparing leaders who are committed to

the personal, professional, and organizational transformation necessary to create and

lead schools that work for all students in our diverse society. Central to the work of ELA is

the building of leadership capacity from a strengths-based perspective, with a focus on

continuous improvement.

Educational Leadership Academy Curriculum

The Educational Leadership Academy is a one-year program that meets the California Tier I Preliminary

Administrative Services Credential requirements. Each graduate will receive a Master of Science in

Administration and is also eligible to obtain the Preliminary Administrative Services Credential.

The ELA master’s program consists of 30 units and is organized into six meaningful interdependent

strands:

• Visioning and Evaluating

• Understanding Self and Others

• Understanding Teaching and Learning

• Understanding Environments

• Understanding and Transforming Organizations

• Foundations of Inquiry and Leadership Field Experience

The first five strands are designed to be studied in depth, with learning focused on “best practices-

in-the-field.” The sixth strand, Foundations of Inquiry and Leadership Field Experience is also

referred to as the Action Research Project. In a year-long research assignment, each student

engages in individual data collection, planning and implementation for a practice or procedure in

their work place. The Action Research Project integrates classroom learning with the student’s work

place and improves upon methods currently used in their school. Students apply theory to gain

valuable leadership learning, while also gaining real-world experience. For successful completion

of this strand, students are guided by a Pepperdine site administrator as well as an administrator at

their school. The submission of a final report and completed Action Research Project are presented

in a conference format at the end of the year. This project is completed in lieu of a traditional

master’s thesis.

Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership, Administration, and Policy (ELAP)

ELAP Curriculum

The Educational Leadership, Administration, and Policy doctoral program is designed for

pre-K–12, adult education administrators, and policy makers nationwide. With a focus

on personal leadership and cultural proficiency development, students plan a two-year

Action Research Project utilizing qualitative and quantitative research tools to engage

in data-analysis. This application of knowledge, skills, and experience are critical for

leading change and improving learning within and across organizations. Students examine

principles of educational equity, diversity, access, and ethics as they explore all aspects of

leading schools and transforming organizations. This program meets the California Clear

Administrative Services Credential requirements for those who are eligible and interested.

National and state standards guide the development of leadership practice in the ELAP

program: the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) and the California

Professional Standards for Educational Leaders. The standards are aligned to promote

quality, research-based leadership preparation. The ELAP program prepares graduates

to serve educational communities in California and across the country.

The ELAP doctoral program has a blended format with 40 percent of instructional

contact conducted online and 60 percent conducted in face-to-face sessions. The

program begins with a four-day Leadership and Technology Training for Educators

(LATTE©) that takes place at the Drescher Graduate Campus in Malibu. This retreat-

style environment is revisited each of the following two summers to support and

enhance the cohort experience. Students meet seven additional times per year over

three-day weekends at the West Los Angeles Graduate Campus, and each cohort

takes one trip per year to a national educational administration conference. The nine

face-to-face meetings are supplemented by synchronous and asynchronous online

interactions throughout the year.

“The ELA program is a symphony of learning where research, philosophy, and theory combine in the hands of skilled faculty members. You learn how to facilitate new results, tackle problems that require paradigm shifting, understand that change is a good thing, and know that technology is your friend. I am now a student in the EALP program and know that both of my Pepperdine degrees will enable me to become the successful leader I am meant to be.”

“ I find the ELAP classes at Pepperdine University to be an enriching and validating experience because the faculty utilizes a hands-on active learning method to increase the comprehen-sion and interest of the learner. The ELAP doctoral courses aren’t just practical theory; they focus on a spiritual, non-dogmatic perspective allowing the learner further growth and enrichment from within. Additionally, as a cohort member of Pepperdine University’s ELAP Doctoral Program, I believe that I am not only a student but also a Pepperdine family member. The experience that I learn here will not only help me to be a better school administrator but also a better person.”
