Information Literacy (IL)Information literacy is “a set of
abilities requiring individuals to recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.”*

Information Literacy Defined
IL Standard OneThe information literate student determines the
nature and extent of the information needed.
IL Standard TwoThe information literate student accesses needed
information effectively and efficiently.
IL Standard ThreeThe information literate student evaluates
information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her knowledge base and value system.
IL Standard FourThe information literate student, individually, or
as a member of a group, uses information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose.
IL Standard FiveThe information literate student understands
many of the economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally.
Responsibility for IL
Shared responsibility of all educators and information providers
Requires collaboration of faculty and librarians
Must be integrated into courses at all levels to provide reinforcement of skills
Digital literacy
Digital literacy is the “ability to understand and use information in multiple formats from a wide range of sources when it is presented via computers”*
