INTRODUCTION

This list of Monumental Inscriptions in the church yard and in the church of St Andrew, West Deeping is based on a survey of inscriptions on the graves in the church yard, undertaken in 2000 or 2001 by Virginia Hall, James Rice and June Thomas. Many of the inscriptions were difficult or impossible to read then. Since that survey, digital photography has made it possible to get more accurate transcriptions and there has been an enormous amount of work done by family historians which can be accessed on the Internet. In several cases, the correct dates of death or age have been found. Over the years some shrubbery has been removed, revealing a few stones with inscriptions that had not previously been recorded. However, many stones have become even more difficult to decipher due to deterioration and lichen growths. In 2005, extensive work was carried out in the church yard to improve drainage and make safe a number of gravestones and in some cases the lower parts of inscriptions are now below the surface of the soil. Parish registers were used to check dates and ages in the earlier survey. In this revision, reference has been made to Lincolnshire Family History Society’s Index to Parish Register Burials 1813 -1900 Volume 4 to fill in and check dates and ages wherever possible. Additional information from this index is indicated by [PR] in the entry. LFHS advise that the accuracy of the index cannot be guaranteed and that the original source should be checked. An even earlier survey of inscriptions on graves both in the church yard and in the King Street cemetery was recorded for the Society for Lincolnshire History and Archaeology by Community Enterprise Projects (Stamford) Ltd in 1986. Reference has been made to a copy of this document, obtainable from Peterborough Libraries, Local Studies Collection. Any details added to this document from that previous source are indicated by the use of red text. A newly discovered resource adds another historical dimension, and part of its contents have been included as an Appendix. Lincolnshire Church Notes made by William John Monson F.S.A. 1828 – 1840, printed for the Lincoln Record Society 1936, contains in the entry for West Deeping, “Notes taken in the church, August 1831”. It lists not only the monumental plaques on the walls of the church at the time, but also the gravestones on the floors of the church. No signs of these remain now, due to substantial repairs and alterations made between 1874 and 1877 during the incumbency of Reverend Heathcote. A petition to the Bishop of Lincoln, dated 27th March 1874, includes in the list of works “excavation and re-flooring to a depth of twelve inches in the soil” and “to remove the monumental tablets, tombstones and coffins as may be necessary and to replace them again as near as possible”. [Cited in A Portrait of West Deeping by Virginia Hall] New marble plaques must have been commissioned to replace some of the old stones. The prolific Figg family are represented by four splendid plaques replacing original gravestones in the south aisle. Two more plaques on the north wall are inscribed with several names from the original stones – but somebody made a mistake somewhere, because the Nicholas Munro of Monson’s Lincolnshire Church Notes appears as Nicholas Measure on the plaque! It is thought that some of the stones lifted from the church floor were used to pave the path from the gate to the church porch – it is possible to see the last traces of lettering round the edges of two or three. One memorial should be mentioned here, otherwise its significance may be overlooked in the future. It is not included in the list, because there is no inscription. A small metal flower container by the east wall of the church yard marks where the ashes of two West Deeping residents, Kathleen Mary Barker (who died in 1987), and her husband Thomas Barker (who died in 1993), were placed. There are two reasons for mentioning this. Firstly, it is an interesting detail of village history - the churchyard was officially “Closed” in 1882, since when all burials

ii

have been in the King Street Cemetery! There was apparently some controversy amongst the resident honorary priest, the churchwardens and villagers about allowing this interment to remain in the church yard. The ashes stayed, but there was to be no memorial inscription. The second reason for referring to this particular case is that the Barkers used to live in the house we now own, 32 King Street. It was through my research into the previous occupants of this house that I started to investigate the monumental inscriptions in the church and churchyard. I have discovered a wealth of village and family history that I hope will be of interest and use to others in this updated format. Margaret A Ashcroft , April 2010
