Where Am I?
I woke up to a sticky hot morning in
Boston Massachusetts. I had a sore back
from a rough and hard bed which was not
normal because I have a mattress with
blankets but this one had no blankets and
the sound of my brother and papa working
in the garden, laps of the waves on the
lake and beach boats coming in and out
for imports an exports.I was waiting mama
to call for me. After what seemed like
forever she finally called. Breakfast was
the usual oats and beans and maybe
cantaloupe.
After breakfast I went outside to work in the
garden with papa. He was harvesting the
watermelon. I love watermelon so this time of
year is very exciting. My step-brother john was
harvesting herbs for mamas cooking like Basel
and parley. We are probably having mama's
chicken and parsley tonight. That was strange
because I was told we had spaghetti and
meatballs breakfast was strange because I
usually have pancakes. I suddenly realized I
time traveled.
A School Day
My father told me that I would be
going to school soon and I would
learn about math the founding
fathers and reading if we weren't
homeschooled first. I went to bed
that night wondering but when I
woke up instead of waiting for my
mom to call I got up got dressed
in my clothes and went
downstairs to get breakfast.
My school is a big brick building. We had
math first thing in the morning then history we
learned about he founding fathers who were
Elbridge Gerry, Nathaniel Gorham, Rufus
King, Caleb Strong they were called the
massachuesetts bay company and formed
the colony for religious freedom. I was
interested and asked questions until the bell
rang. My first day of school was fun I told to
papa and mama, I made two new friends
Jacob and Max.
A Day of Chores
The next morning I had to do my
chores which were: doing the
laundry, fetching water, husking
the corn picking the herbs,
plowing the fields and watering
the flowers. Then I got to hunt
and do fishing contests with my
friends Jacob and Max and the
neighbors kids the twins Harriet
and Zack.
After the day was over I went home
sweaty and exhausted ate my dinner
bens rice and fish then crashed my hay
bed and felt like I was knocked out.
Recess day
My second day of school is fun because
we learned about something called
subtraction which is the opposite of
addition our teacher told us. Also unlike
yesterday we had something called
recess which is free time when we play
games like kickball and tag. Today was
really fun at school. School is different
on the days that I stay for a while when I
wait for mama and papa. But I might
make more friends this way because
lots of kids do this.
Earning a living
My parents earn a living by
farming and cooking for a little
shop that sells food and other
goods. My mama cooks some
bread and fish for the store and
also sows some cloths. My papa
picks flowers and herbs for the
store such as roses daisies and
violets. The herbs he pick are
basil , parsley and oregano.
My job is to help my brother count the
amounts of food that mama cooks for
the shops and put the buttons on the
clothes mama sows. I earn about
twenty cents a day and my brother
twenty five. My parents make three
dollars! That is a lot of money
compared to what I get.
Slavery
Mama told me there was something
called slavery which was when African
Americans were captured and
enslaved. That made me mad because
people are treating other people like
things not human beings. My town had
about thirty small plantations. Unlike
the southern colonies Massachusetts
slaves became servants or skilled
workers. Starting slaves worked side
by side with their master.
