PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

NAIFA POLICY ON RECRUITING AND ASSOCIATION ACTIVITIES

The official activities of NAIFA and its state and local associations shall not be used as a forum or means for individual members to actively or directly recruit other members to their companies or agencies (i.e., proselytizing).

Association time and resources must focus on NAIFA’s mission to advocate for a positive legislative and regulatory environment, enhance business and professional skills, and promote the ethical conduct of our members. Proselytizing is not consistent with this mission and is not appropriate association business.

This policy shall not be construed to interfere with an individual member’s freedom to recruit others on their own time, in connection with their own business affairs, apart from association activities. This policy also shall not be constructed to preclude company or agency advertising, exhibits, or sponsorships, in connection with association publications or activities.

A DAY ON CAPITOL HILL

NAIFA MA Leaders, Jennifer Shepley, David Burg and Adam Sachs attended the Political Involvement and Political Action Committees Training meeting December 1st through 2nd, culminating with a Day on Capitol Hill on December 3rd. The PIC/PAC meeting was engaging, including inspiring presentations from NAIFA CEO Kevin Mayeux, Jules Gaudreau and an especially insightful presentation from Rep. Peter Roskam who shared bipartisan strategies to be able to continue serving our clients. David Burg, NAIFA MA Government Relations Chair, said it was the best NAIFA meeting he had attended. Our Day at the Capitol included meetings with the offices of Congressmen Neal, Lynch, and McGovern and Congresswoman Clark. There was no beating around the bush. Our objective was to discuss the DOL Fiduciary Proposal. We shared that we favor the best interest of our

clients, and we expressed that the existing proposal would effectively limit access to commission based options that would hurt access for small and medium investors. We noted that commission based options over the long-term can be less expensive than fee based options. We further suggested that there should be a new comment period after the DOL returns with a revised proposal.

The discussion was productive and our Congressional delegation understands the importance of what we do and how we help their constituents. A paraphrased quote from Congressman Schweikert (AZ) sums up the importance of our position. He stated, “If you are in a regulated profession and regulations change, everyone needs be on deck”.

2016 WESTERN MA LEGISLATIVE BREAKFAST

Springfield, MA – On Friday, January 9th, the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors teamed up with the Massachusetts Independent Insurance Agents of Hamden County to hold the Annual Western Massachusetts Legislative Breakfast. The event was held at the Colony Club in Springfield where about 50 members from the two organizations and 13 legislators came together to break bread and discuss issues pertinent to the industry and how they might affect constituents. The breakfast was kicked off by Alan Stearley from the Gaudreau Group, a multi-line insurance agency in Wilbraham, MA who introduced Gaudreau Group President and NAIFA National President, Jules Gaudreau. Jules’ impassioned speech drove home the vital importance that local insurance agents play in the communities of the Commonwealth and how critical it is for organizations like ours to maintain open lines of communications with our legislators.

Jules then introduced NAIFA MA president Michael Crotty who pointed out the successes of the past year for NAIFA MA and how the legislative priorities we pursue directly benefit the constituents the legislators represent.

After the speeches from the NAIFA contingent, the MAIA was represented by State President John Sweeney who is President of John R. Sweeney Insurance Agency, a 3rd generation family run property casualty agency in

West Springfield, MA. Sweeney again stressed the importance of being involved in the political process, regardless of your interest in politics. The policies that legislators create are driven by the voices of constituents, so it is imperative to make our voices heard. John then introduced Dan Foley, VP of Government Affairs and General Counsel of the MIIA. Mr. Foley described the essential role the insurance industry plays in the economy of Massachusetts. With billions of dollars injected into the economy each year, it is crucial that the insurance industry remain vibrant.

The final speaker was Bill Cass of the Suffolk Group, the lobbying firm for NAIFA MA. Cass has been working with NAIFA-MA since the days of MALU and has seen the ebbs and flows of the organization. He reported the organization is as strong as ever and that its influence on Beacon Hill is evident. Never shy about giving a good-natured jab, Cass kicked off the most anticipated part of the breakfast, the legislator’s remarks, and left few in the room unscathed. Comments from legislators, were reminiscent of a Friars Roast. The breakfast marks the beginning of the legislative session and legislators never miss an opportunity to exchange a few barbs. Although there was an air of comic relief, there was an underlying theme that legislators value input from organizations like NAIFA and the MIIA. It is truly a unique event that brings together members from different communities and political backgrounds to come together for a morning of camaraderie and fun.
