Dear Friends,There are few moments in this job

as gratifying as those in which I

am able to visit with our patients.

Many of them struggle with

life-altering conditions and each

has good reason to be frustrated,

angry or resentful. Yet time and

time again, these patients amaze

us — showing only gratitude for the care they receive and

sharing in our hope that cures are in sight.

This “relentless optimism” inspires the Mass. Eye and

Ear leadership team as we move forward with executing

Vision 2020 — the hospital’s strategic plan. We are making

Mass. Eye and Ear care and surgery available to patients

in more locations; and despite reductions in federal funding,

our research community continues to thrive. Mass. Eye

and Ear clinicians and scientists advance major medical and

technological breakthroughs with amazing regularity.

We welcomed Dr. Brad Welling this spring, who takes over

as Chief and HMS Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology.

Dr. Welling brings outstanding experience to the position,

which he himself calls “the best otolaryngology job in the

world.” I want to offer our deepest thanks to Dr. Joan Miller,

Chief and HMS Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology,

for her tremendous service as Chair of the Harvard Medical

School Search Committee.

There are really not words enough to thank Dr. Joseph

B. Nadol, Jr. who so gracefully led the Department of

Otolaryngology for 28 years. His leadership, teaching and

patient care has set a standard for generations to come.

We are thrilled that he remains on the Mass. Eye and Ear/

HMS faculty and continues his research here.

We also owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our

Board of Directors, our Board of Trustees, and our many

friends who have led the early phase of our new capital

campaign, “Bold Science. Life-Changing Cures.” Thanks

to you, we are well on our way to formally launching a

successful campaign that will enable our clinician scientists

and principal investigators to deliver new treatments and

therapies to patients everywhere. We thank each and every

Leadership GiftsIn fiscal year 2013, Mass. Eye and Ear received $27.2 million

in gifts, grants and pledges from generous friends, private

foundations and corporations. These donations, received

from October 1, 2012 to September 30, 2013 represent an

investment in exceptional patient care, life-changing research,

Advancing Cures

Mass. Eye and Ear Board Chair Wyc Grousbeck and Corinne Grousbeck

(pictured on left) and the entire Grousbeck family have pledged $5 million

to establish the Grousbeck Center for Gene Therapy, the Grousbeck Family

Chair in Gene Therapy, and to support Mass. Eye and Ear’s world-class

facilities where this highly innovative research will take place.

The Grousbeck Center for Gene Therapy aims to develop sight-restoring

new treatments for people with inherited blindness. The Center is directed

by Luk H. Vandenberghe, Ph.D., a leading scientist who has invented,

developed and translated many enabling technologies for gene therapy. At

the Grousbeck Center he is leading an ambitious research program focused

on the discovery of improved and novel vectors to replace diseased genes

with new healthy genes to restore vision.

Vestibular Disorders. This endowed fellowship will enable clinician-

April 15, 2013 started as a typical Marathon Monday. Nurses and

physicians were busy caring for patients, while 40 members of Team Eye

and Ear were busy running 26.2 miles to raise funds for research and

clinical care. No one expected the unthinkable, but it came. After the first

bomb exploded, both teams sprang into action. Mass. Eye and Ear’s doctors

and nurses cared for more than 70 patients over the course of the year. On

April 21, 2014 Team Eye and Ear laced up their sneakers and returned in

2014 to finish together what they started last year. Each was motivated by

his or her own reason, but they all shared one thing: they are Mass. Eye
