• Fundamental Quantities: The most common system of dimensioning a physical quantity is the mass-length-time referred to as the MLT system of units.

• There is no direct relationship between the quantities mass, length and time.

• Secondary quantities: All other physical quantities such as pressure, velocity, and energy etc. are expressed in terms of these fundamental quantities and are called derived/secondary quantities.

Newton’s law:

F= mass × acceleration = ML/T2

In the force-length-time (FLT) system of units, the force is considered as a fundamental quantity with mass expressed in terms of force, length and time (M=FT2L-1)

Dimensional Homogeneity and its application

• The fundamental theory of dimensional analysis is based on the following axiom:

“Equations describing a physical phenomena must be dimensionally homogenous and units therein must be consistent”

• A equation is said to be dimensionally homogeneous if thedimensions of various terms on the two sides of equations areidentical.

• A dimensionally homogenous equation is independent of thefundamental units of measurement if the units therein are consistent.It means length can be added to or subtracted from only a lengthdimension.

Thus, the principle of dimension homogeneity serves the following purposes:

(i) It helps to check weather an equation of any physical phenomenon is dimensionally homogeneous or not.

(ii) It helps to determine the dimensions of any physical quantity.

(iii) Dimensional homogeneity helps to convert the units from one system to another.

(iv) The concept of dimensional homogeneity is a step towards dimensional analysis which is fruitfully employed to plan experiments and to present results meaningfully.

Dimensional Analysis: Rayleigh’s Method

• The method involves the following steps:

i. Gather all the independent variables which are likely to influence the value of the dependent variable.

ii. Write the functional relationship i.e., if the dependent variable ‘y’ is some function of the independent variables x1, x2, x3, …. Then

iii. Write the above equation in the form

Correlations for Convective mass transfer Coefficient

• The mass transfer coefficient is required for calculating the rate of convective mass transfer.

• In practice, mass transfer coefficient in a typical situation may be obtained from a suitable correlation if an experimental value is not available.

• A large number of mass transfer correlations, covering a wide variety of practical situations and geometries, exist in the literature. These correlations have been developed by the researchers on the basis of large volume of experimental data.

Interphase Mass Transfer

• Theoretical principles of diffusion and mass transfer from one point to another in asingle phase or in homogeneous medium by using either the equations of moleculardiffusion or the phenomenological mass transfer coefficients.

• Most mass transfer operations in practice involve transport of one or more solute fromone phase to another. Example, Drying of air in sulfuric acid plant.

How can we calculate the rate of mass transfer in two-phase system?

The theoretical principles concerned will be dealt with in this chapter.

Since diffusion and mass transfer occur in both the phases, we need to make use oftwo mass transfer coefficients-one for each phase.

Here driving force is not merely the difference of concentrations of the solute inthe two phases. The driving force is rather measured by how far the phases areaway from equilibrium.

This is an important departure from the way we analyze the phenomenon of heattransfer from one phase to another. In heat transfer equilibrium means that thephases are at the same temperature so the driving force is zero.

In mass transfer, on the other hand, equality of concentration of two phasesdoesn’t necessarily ensure equilibrium.

Equilibrium Between Phases

• Equilibrium between two phases in contact meansa state in which there is no net transfer of solutefrom one phase to the other.

• At equilibrium, the chemical potentials of thesolute in the two phases are equal.

• Example: A small vessel containing a mixture ofSO2 and water

• A particular set of equilibrium data for a system is associated with a particulartemperature and pressure condition. In a system at equilibrium, the number of phasesP′, the number of components C′, and the number of variants F′, also called the degreeof freedom, are related by the ‘phase rule’.

The application of the phase rule can be illustrated by taking the example of equilibriumin the SO2-water system.

• If the two phases are at equilibrium, there is no net transfer of the solute from onephase to the other. However, this does not mean that there is no transfer of solutemolecules from one phase to the other at all. It rather means that if a few moleculesgo from phase-I to phase-II, the same number of molecules move from phase-II tophase-I in order to maintain the concentration in the phases constant. This equilibriumis sometimes called ‘dynamic equilibrium’

• If the two phases are not in equilibrium, mass transfer from phase-I tophase-II occurs so long as the concentration of the solute in phase-II islower than the equilibrium concentration.

• The extent of deviation from the equilibrium state is a measure of the‘driving force’ for mass transfer. For a system at equilibrium, the drivingforce is zero. Similar arguments apply of there are more than two phasesin contact.

The Raoult’s and the Henry’s Law

• The equilibrium data or the equilibrium distribution of a solute between two immiscible (or partially miscible) phases are determined experimentally, although there have been numerous attempts with varying degrees of success to predict the equilibrium data theoretically.

• Two important laws of equilibrium between phases are:i. Raoult’s Law (Ideal gas-liquid or vapor-liquid system)

ii. Henry’s Law

Raoult’s Law

• For an ideal gas-liquid or vapor liquid system, the equilibrium relationship obeys the Raoult’s law.

• A solution behaves ideally when:

i. The solute and the solvent molecules have similar sizes and similar intermolecular forces.

ii. The excess volume of mixing is zero.

iii. The heat of mixing is zero when both the solute and the solvent are liquids.

• Equilibrium data for many non-ideal-gas-liquid systems at low concentrationscan be expressed by the Henry’s law:

• The constant H for a given solute-solvent pair is a strong function oftemperature (it increases with temperature). There are two other commonforms of this law.

Mass Transfer between two phases

• A majority of industrial mass transfer operations involve two phases (fluid-fluidor fluid-solid), and sometimes even three phases.

• These phases have low mutual solubility or are practically immiscible.

• Example:

• Absorption of NH3 from a mixture in air by using water

• Absorption of moisture from air by using con. H2SO4

• The carrier phases involved (air and water; air and Sulphuric acid) arepractically immiscible.

• Solute (Ammonia and moisture) diffuses from the gas phase to liquid phase.

• Mass transfer from one phase (say the gas phase, G) to another phase (say the liquid phase, L) involves the following sequential steps:

i. The solute (A) is transported from the bulk of gas phase (G) to the gas-liquid interphase.

ii. The solute (A) is picked up or absorbed by the liquid phase (L) at the gas-liquid interphase.

iii. The absorbed solute (A) is transported from the interphase to the bulk of the liquid (L).

The steps (i-iii) are facilitated by the turbulence in the fluid mediums.

• The term ‘interface’ means the geometrical plane or surface of contact between two phases.

• Lewis and Whitman (1924) visualized that two stagnant fluid films exist on either side of the interface and mass transfer occurs through these films, in sequence, and purely molecular diffusion.

• Beyond these films the concentration in a phase is equal to the bulk concentration.

This is the two-film theory of Lewis and Whitman

• The idea is similar to that of stagnant films described in heat transfer.

• A matter of fact is, a stagnant is only a visualization or imagination. It doesn’t exist in reality.

• The two-film model or two-film theory has proved to be extremely useful in mass transfer modeling, analysis and calculations.

• Treybal called it the two-resistance theory because the existence of mass transfer resistances is a physical reality but that of the film is not.

The overall mass transfer Co-efficient

• The calculation of the flux of interphase mass transfer by using above equation becomes easy job if the interfacial and bulk concentrations of the solute in either of the phases are known.

• Interfacial concentrations are not directly measurable quantities and can not be specified as such in practical problem.

• In experimental set-up, it is only the bulk concentrations that can be measured by taking samples of the phases and analyzing for the solute contents.

• In reality, the interfacial concentrations cannot be accurately measured since it is not possible to collect a sample of any phase from the interface, which is just a geometrical surface.

• It is necessary to develop a method of calculation of the mass transfer rate using the bulk concentrations of the phases.

• Therefore, for the purpose of simplicity, we will define “overall mass transfer coefficient” suitably combining the “individual coefficients”.

• At this point, we also need to consider how the “overall driving force” should be expressed in relation to “overall mass transfer coefficient”.

• In mass transfer, the driving force can be expressed in terms of gas-phase concentration difference or the liquid phase concentration difference.

• It is to be noted that the equilibrium mole fractions (in both phases) do not physically exist in the system. These are merely equilibrium concentrations corresponding to the bulk concentrations in the liquid and gas phase.

• If the gas is highly soluble, m’ is small. Therefore, the absorption of a highlysoluble has is gas-phase resistance controlled. For example, absorption ofammonia in water (highly soluble) or absorption of hydrocarbon in a non-volatile oil ( a hydrocarbon is highly soluble in mineral oil) is a gas-phaseresistance control.

• Absorption of oxygen in the aqueous medium of an aerobic fermenter ( thesolubility of oxygen is low) is a liquid-phase resistance controlled.

• If a gas has a moderate solubility in a liquid, both the resistances are likely tobe important.

• However, for the absorption of a pure gas, whatever be the solubility, there isno gas-phase resistance. This is because for such as case, the solute doesn’thave to diffuse through another gas and its partial pressure at the interface isthe same as that in the bulk gas; so the gas-phase doesn’t offer any resistance.
