HOMER HOPES As I begin serving a new parish community at Our Mother of Good Counsel, I am reminded of the importance of listening. I certainly don’t pretend to know the best way for a parish to function nor do I have all the answers to the challenges that any parish faces. Yes, I have been at parish ministry for over forty years and have gleaned some good ideas along the way. But every community is unique, has a unique personality, has unique strengths and weaknesses and a unique mission. It is very important for a new pastor to listen for all this uniqueness, to respect it and find ways to build upon it with his own unique gifts and expertise. So, I am in the process of hosting “Listening Sessions” among the various active groups and ministries at Our Mother of Good Counsel. These are great opportunities for me to listen and become better acquainted with parishioners and their concerns. St. Bernard parishioners may remember that I started there in the same way two years ago. Former President Jimmy Carter once confessed that the incredible complexity of demands on him as a President made him less attentive to his own family. Once the President and his wife were eating dinner with their daughter Amy. The President seemed preoccupied with matters of government as usual, so Amy started talking very fast about her day in school. The President said to her “Whoa! Slow down, talk more slowly.” And she replied to him “Then, will you listen slowly?” We all need to learn again how to listen…and listen slowly…that is, with understanding, empathy and respect. So often it seems our culture and society are being torn asunder by extremes…by people who will not listen to each other but are only concerned with “speaking their own mind.” So, often we talk “at” one another rather than “to” and “with” one another. Or, we simply talk with people whom we know think or act like us. Listening is so important, and especially listening to those who may differ from ourselves. We need to remember that compromise and consensus are values and not “dirty words.” And we can only come to consensus by listening. In fact, we can only truly respect diversity by “listening slowly” to one another…with respect, empathy and the desire to understand.
Peace, Father Joe McCormick, OSA

Being Martha and Mary. Martha is burdened. Since she and Jesus are friends, she has no trouble telling Jesus, not unkindly, what to do about her sister’s behavior. Service, discipleship is important. Good for Martha. But Mary frets less. Jesus urges a balance in our attention between serving him and listening to him. The latter informs the former. ►How will I carve out time this day to listen to Jesus? ►How will my listening spill into action? ►How will my action be filled with mercy work?
