THE NEW EVANGELIZATION The New Evangelization, a term believed to be first coined by Pope John Paul II, is the recognition that all Catholics, regardless of their position inthe Church, are called to share their faith. "I sense that the moment has come to commit all of the Church's energies to a new evangelization and to the mission. No believer in Christ, no institution of the Church can avoid this supreme duty: to proclaim Christ to all peoples" (St. John Paul II, Redemptoris Missio, no. 3). That means you, too! But how do you do it? The best way to lead others to Christ is to personally live your faith. This is the same way it has been done for centuries, but ina way that is "new in its ardor, new in its methods and new in its expression" (St. John Paul II, Address to the Latin American Bishops). The Office of New Evangelization of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles was established in 2013 by Archbishop José H. Gomez. Led by Rev. Ed Benioff, the office launched as Radiate LA, coordinates the Archdiocesan initiatives to spread the Gospel and to increase Catholics' knowledge and love of their faith while inspiring them to works of prayer and mercy.

REFLECTING ON GOD’S WORD We can get caught up in the details and miss the heart of the message today. Where did Jesus go? Is heaven “up there”? Why doesn’t Matthew’s Gospel have Jesus being taken up? Doesn’t this feast remove Jesus from us, to some place where he “sits at the right hand of the Father”? Sound a little disengaged? In his introduction to the writings of St. Bernard of Clairvaux, Jean Leclercq writes that the mystery of the Ascension fulfilled the mystery of love in which Jesus returns to the glory of the Father. The Son then sends the Spirit to unite us with the Father in love. Thus, in Bernard’s thought, the Ascension is a symbol for the passage of Christ from his life in mortal flesh to glorious life in the Spirit. This same transition from flesh to Spirit can also be accomplished in us, since it has already taken place in Christ. But we are not simply passive recipients. There is work to be done. Luke’s angels bluntly tell the apostles to get moving. Matthew’s final scene spells out the work: “Go forth and make disciples, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, and teaching others to observe all that I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19). Witness to Jesus, in word and deed. The task of spreading the good news that is Jesus Christ, teaching others about him, can seem daunting. But we are not alone. We have the promise that the Holy Spirit will work with us; in Matthew, Jesus’ final words are reassuring: “I am with you always” (28:20). That is reason enough to work with confidence.

BRAINSTORMING THE FUTURE OFMUSIC MINISTRY FOR OLPH

I have been the Director of Music and Liturgy since August 19, 2013. I came to OLPH with the hope of making a difference in the music and liturgy of the parish. I do believe that I have made a difference, but in order to grow, I need help. In preparing this column I did a little brainstorming session of what I would like to see, in music, in the future of OLPH: • A Choir that would have the ability to sing some of the great music found in the history of the Catholic Church. A choir that could prepare and present a Requiem Mass (Fauré, Durufle or Rutter) in the Month of Remembrance (November).

    • Children's Choir, in which the young singers of our parish would learn to sing the great music or our Church. A choir that could become a member of Pueri Cantores. This choir could participate in one of the Sunday Masses once or twice per month.

    • Youth Choir: build up our current youth choir. Include more singers and sing a wider variety of music found in the repertoire of our Church. • Small ensembles, to prepare and present music at various Masses (such as the current 8:30 Mass Ensemble). • Bell Choirs: Elementary School, Middle School, High School and Adult Choirs. • Cantors, from our own parish, to train and serve our community at the different weekend Masses, funerals, wedding and quinceanras. • Instrumentalists: particularly keyboard, guitar, bass and percussion players to participate in the above mentioned ensembles. What can you do to help? Maybe you would like to be a part of a "Music Commission" to help move these ideas, and other ideas, forward? Do you know someone who sings or plays an instrument that you would love to see get involved?I welcome any thoughts and ideas you might have. Please email or call me at: [email protected] 661-259-2276, ext. 675

ADORATION WILL END EARLYThis Friday, June 6, Eucharistic Adoration in the church will end at noon due to our school graduation in the church that afternoon.

A MISSION FROM THE MOUNTAIN Matthew is the only one of the evangelists who does not speak explicitly of or recount the departure of Jesus from his followers. Mark and Luke recount the Ascension, each in his own way; and John consistently has Jesus speak of the necessity of his departure so the Paraclete might come. Matthew situates his final scene for Jesus on top of a mountain in Galilee (not outside Jerusalem, as Luke does). This is the region where his mission originated, and throughout his Gospel the mountaintop has been the place for him to teach his followers. (We are familiar with the “Sermon on the Mount” from Matthew.) And here Jesus reechoes those Ascension themes we hear from the other evangelists: It is Jesus himself, risen and glorified, charged with power from the Father, who sends us out; it is Jesus himself who gives us our mission to baptize, heal, teach, and proclaim the Good News of salvation; it is Jesus himself who will be with us always, as we continue to be his presence alive in the world.Copyright © J. DID YOU KNOW?A Healthy Scrutiny of Programs for Kids Helps Create a

Healthy EnvironmentIt is not a best practice for a parent, guardian, employer, or manager to blindly trust everyone who works with children. Yet, paranoia of those who work with children is also not a best practice. There is a healthy balance. By regularly and frequently questioning the actions and motives of those who work with children, parents and other adults can audit the programs their children participate in and help keep caregivers accountable for their work. In this process, parents and other adults can create a constant fear of being caught in the mind of a perpetrator. By channeling this kind of healthy scrutiny and suspicion into accountability, adults can create an environment where children are protected, quality care is emulated, and abuse is not tolerated. For a copy of the VIRTUS® article, “An ounce of healthy suspicion is worth a pound of prevention,” email: [email protected].

    FATHER’S DAY PICNICCELEBRATING OUR FATHERS!SATURDAY, JUNE 14th 5:30 P.M.

Come join us in the back grassy area behind the school! To many of us, fathers have always been the “Silent Partner,” very much like God the Father. Their strength lies in their quiet demeanor. This year, and hopefully for years to come, our parish will no longer be quiet about their role and contributions to our families. Then...there are the other men in our lives who we also affectionately call Fathers. The Fathers who minister to our spiritual needs and who make sure that we flourish and grow in our faith. We come to love and cherish them as part of our families. Hard as it is, we also learn to let them go. The trouble with hello is…goodbye. ALL ARE WELCOME as the many OLPH ministries come together as a parish in honoring and giving thanks to our beloved Dads, and paying special tribute to Fr. Albert, Fr. Raymond, Fr. Tony, and Fr. Joseph before sending them forth on their next assignments. Picnic dinners will be available by reserving in advance. (This includes dinner plus soft drinks and desserts for $8.) Or you can always bring your own picnic dinner. The fun and fellowship is free and the memories are priceless, so don’t miss out. Let us know you’re coming...R.S.V.P. by visiting the table by the garage, or by calling Aurora Bertulfo at 661-755-0843.

ITALIANS UNITE!Here’s your chance to be part of a new group, the Italian Catholic Club of SCV, which is just forming. We will be meeting at OLPH on the second Friday of each month beginning in June. Come help us celebrate our Italian heritage, food, and fun. Applications are now being accepted. For additional information, please call Anna Di Masi Riggs at 661-645-7877.

FAMILY PROMISEFamily Promise provides a way for churches and synagogues to meet the important basic needs of homeless families. Families with children make up the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Our Lady of Perpetual Help will be supporting a local congregation who will be hosting a homeless family for a week at a time at their church or synagogue. Volunteers are the foundation of this ministry. There are many ways that you can help. Whether you provide activities for children, help with setting up beds, donate non-perishable items, weekly cleanup, meal preparation or stay overnight, you can make a difference in the lives of families who have suffered the ordeal of losing their home. Our church is exploring ways we can participate in this important ministry. A volunteer form is available after all Masses at the table by the garage. Please let me know if you would like to help or if you would like further information. Ann Pfeifer, 661-255-6123
