SJC/STM Memorial Tree

In December, the Bereavement Ministry and the Ladies of Charity hosted an Advent Gathering of prayer, reflection and song for the bereaved.

Together we decorated this bright and beautiful tree. It includes more than 100 personalized ornaments in memory of the departed souls from SJC and STM.

Now, as the Christmas season is ending, we invite you to come to the Family Life Center and take your ornament from the tree. May it become a treasured remembrance in your future Christmas decorations.

Please remove your ornament by January 15th. After that date, they will available for pick up at the STM parish office. May God bless you with peace throughout the New Year.

REFLECTION Pastor’s Letter

FROM THE PASTOR

St. John Capistran 412-221-6275 St. Thomas More 412-833-0031 School 412-833-1412 stm-sjc.org 4

The Father, as Jesus is baptized by John, proclaims that this is His beloved Son in whom he is well pleased. The Father speaks these same words over us on the day of our baptism. We are his beloved daughters and sons and he is well-pleased in us. Through the Sacrament of Baptism, God claims us as his own, a people set apart to do His work as followers and disciples of Jesus Christ. This is our mission in life. As we recall our baptism on this fast, we are reminded of the promises made that day to reject Satan and to accept and believe in One God, Father Son and Holy Spirit. This is our faith and we are honored to profess it and live it out each day. In his Letter to the Romans, Saint Paul writes, “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.” We are called to live in the newness of life in Christ, turning away from sinfulness in fidelity to the Gospel. Each day, through the power of the Holy Spirit, we renew those sacred promises in every act that leads us closer to God and others. On this Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, I have a tradition where I visit the Church in which I was baptized. I spend a few moments in personal prayer thanking God for the gift of my life, my family and my priesthood. Then, I renew my baptismal promises as a start to a new year. I invite you to renew your promises to the Lord. May we all continue to do His work for the glory of His name and the goodness of all people. Consecrated in Christ, let us continue to fulfill those promises.

ST. ANTHONY SCHOOL PROGRAMS &

DEEEEPAUL SCHOOL FOR HEARING AND SPEECH

JANUARY 18 & 19, 2020

The Diocese of Pittsburgh is home to two nationally recognized educational programs for children with special needs: St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech (formally known as The DePaul Institute). A special collection to benefit these two organizations will take place the weekend of January 18th and 19th at all Masses at each parish location. St. Anthony School Programs provides an inclusive education to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, or other Intellectual Disabilities in five elementary/intermediate classrooms, secondary classrooms and one post secondary program at Duquesne University. DePaul School for Hearing and Speech provides Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) education to children who are deaf or hard of hearing. Without the use of sign language, DePaul students learn to listen and speak and successfully and transition to their neighborhood schools alongside their peers with typical hearing. Your donation will help St. Anthony School Programs and DePaul School for Hearing and Speech to further their goals of providing quality educational programs and services to their students. Your support is critical. Your generosity will help these organizations forever improve the lives of their students and families.

Participating in the Annual Diocesan Collection means:

Supporting children with special needs. Donating counts toward our Parish Share Assessment.

 Creating remarkable opportunities for children.

Please be as generous as you can. Thank you.

EVERY CHILD IS A GIFT FROM GOD!

Celebration Celebration Celebration Celebration DayDayDayDay!

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, February 23rdFebruary 23rdFebruary 23rdFebruary 23rd

9:00 am - 1:00 pm In the

Family Life Center at STM

We all have diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and traditions. Heritage Day is a day to celebrate your roots and showcase your traditions.

We hope to have a table representing as many countries/regions as possible. We’ll need a “table coordinator” for each country/region who will work with other volunteers to design your table. Have fun with it. Adorn your space with a festive table cloth, photographs, keepsakes - dress in the fashion of the region or maybe even make snacks from the region! Parishioners will visit the tables before and after Masses in the FLC during February’s Donut Sunday. It will be a time of education, appreciation, and fellowship!

Please email the parish office at: [email protected] to register your table and begin planning. It will be a fun event celebrating what makes all of us, children of God, so special.

Table leader is responsible for leading the team associated with the table by taking calls and coordinating with folks interested in that heritage. That day, they will ensure that the table is set up by 8:45am and that there are volunteers to staff the table after every Mass. They are also responsible for cleaning up their area at 1:00 and getting any supplies, keepsakes, etc. back to their owner(s).

Thank you for Participating!

Prayer Ministry In Scripture, Jesus lovingly tells us, “Come to me all you who are weary and burdened and I will give you rest…” St. John Capistran and St. Thomas More Church are blessed to have a prayer ministry after our weekend Masses. We all need prayer and, at times, it helps to have our hearts’ burdens shared and lifted. At the end of Mass, our priests will announce that prayer ministers are available to pray with parishioners and to carry their intentions home for prayer. Thank you to many of you who have already blessed the prayer ministers by stopping for prayer after Mass. We welcome your return. To sign up to be a prayer Minister, please call the parish office at 412-833-0031. This ministry is very casual and can be done as your schedule permits and as the Spirit leads.

MEDITATIONMEDITATIONMEDITATIONMEDITATION

The Catechism of the Catholic Church gives four reasons for the Incarnation, why God became man in Jesus Christ. The third reason is “to be our model of holiness.” All of Jesus’ words and actions model for us what we ought to do. He also shows us how we’re meant to be. Jesus’ baptism ought to remind us of our own baptism and of the importance of baptism in the Christian life. The Baptism of the Lord reminds us of our Trinitarian identity. When we are baptized, we stand in solidarity with Christ, bathed in the waters he sanctified. There, the Father proclaims our adoption into the family of God. “‘This is my beloved son [this is my beloved daughter], with whom I am well pleased.’” And the Spirit, too, descends. We are filled with the Spirit’s grace and power to continue Christ’s mission on earth. We received these gifts in the sacrament, and they continue to dwell within us through sanctifying grace. We can — and should — invite God to stir up these graces of our baptism and consider them in our own lives. Does Christ feel like a distant relative two thousand years in the past? Or do you see him as someone who can be encountered here and now? Ask yourself where you find your sense of dignity and worth. Do you still search for it in success, social status, and selfish pursuits? Or are you able to rest in being a beloved child of God? Remember, baptism gives us a call and a charge to change the world. Do you pray for the Holy Spirit to guide you? Or are you so focused on your own life that you miss the mission? This week, let’s do as Jesus did. Let’s live in our baptism! ©LPi

Eighth Grade Families: There will be a meeting on the Sacrament of Confirmation for both parents/guardians and Candidates for Confirmation for St. John Capistran faith formation learners on Wednesday, January 15th at 7:00 p.m. in Capistran Hall, and for St. Thomas More faith formation learners and St. Thomas More School students on Sunday, January 19th at 12:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center. This meeting is for our eighth grade faith formation learners and school students who will be confirmed in the Fall and their parents/guardians. This meeting will address important information regarding the theology and celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation, required forms and papers, Sponsors, Confirmation Saint Report, Confirmation Retreat, Rite of Election, and other details regarding Confirmation. All Candidates for Confirmation and at least one parent/guardian are expected to attend. If you have any questions, please address them to Mrs. Denise DeCapria, Director of Faith Formation at [email protected] or at [email protected]. Little Sisters of the Poor Service: Our faith formation learners are participating in a much needed service to benefit the elderly poor residents of the Little Sisters of the Poor at St. Thomas More from Sunday, January 12th through Wednesday, January 22nd, and at St. John’s from Tuesday, January 14th through Sunday, February 2nd. We are asking our faith formation families at both St. John’s and St. Thomas More and are inviting our parishioners and friends to participate in a collection of the most needed items from their wish list for the residents, which include: Bacon (the residents love bacon!); Flavored Jellies & Jams (Regular & Sugar-free): Cereals (Plain Oatmeal, Cream of Wheat, Corn Flakes); Beverages (Coffee & Tea Bags—regular and decaf, Hot Chocolate); Juices (Cranberry and Prune—please no cans); Soup (Tomato, Chicken Noodle, Cream of Chicken or Mushroom, Chicken and Rice); Condiments (Ketchup, Mustard, Mayonnaise, Pancake Syrup—diet and regular); Salad Dressings (Ranch, Italian, French, Caesar, Thousand Island—regular and fat free); Paper Products (Napkins, Kleenex); Personal Care Items (Dove Body Wash, Body Lotion, Baby Wipes); and Gift Cards (Giant Eagle, Walmart, and Kuhn’s). At St. John’s, items may be placed in the bins located in Capistran Hall. Bacon should be placed in the refrigerator in the kitchen. At St. Thomas More, items can be placed on the tables in the school lobby. Bacon is to be taken to the Religious Education Office to be refrigerated. Thank you for your generosity and help in caring for the elderly poor. Class Cancellation: In the event of inclement weather, classes will be canceled if Upper St. Clair Schools are closed. If there is a one or two hour delay, the morning sessions only at St. John’s will be canceled. If the weather turns bad during the afternoon and classes need to be canceled, the announcement will be made on the local news networks. St. Thomas More faith formation families will receive an automatic phone alert as well.
