Commentary
As this is his first visit to the Parish of Wentworthville, Bishop Anthony
was formally received at the church this morning for today’s Mass. The
Rite of Reception mirrors that which took place at St Patrick’s Cathedral
on 3 March 2010, when he arrived at the Cathedral for his installation as
Bishop of the Diocese.
Bishop Anthony was met at the entrance to the church by a gathering of
clergy and parishioners, and was greeted by Fr Paul. He was then
presented a crucifix, which he venerated. Before entering the church, he
sprinkled himself and those gathered with holy water, blessing them as we
usually bless ourselves at the church doors. Fr Paul then led Bishop
Anthony to the tabernacle, where they prayed in silent adoration before
moving to the sacristy to prepare for Mass.

Commentary
The Rite of Installation is the liturgical celebration through which Fr
Paul is appointed as Parish Priest of Wentworthville. Fr Paul was
nominated for the role of Parish Priest by the Carmelite Prior Provincial,
Fr Denis Andrew OCarm. Bishop Anthony then, as the Bishop
responsible for the pastoral care of our parish, confirms this nomination
and appoints Fr Paul.
While Fr Paul is already known to the parish of Wentworthville, the rite
still retains several elements that bear liturgical importance. Like in
other rites (such as the Rites of Christian Initiation and the Rite of
Ordination), the parish priest elect is formally presented to the
community, and testimony is given that Fr Paul is suitably prepared to
serve as parish priest. He is also presented to the parish’s clerical and lay
leadership so he may be formally welcomed for the first time as parish
priest. He also publically declares his faith and his commitment to
uphold the teachings of the Church.

Renewal of Promises
Commentary
As a sign of his willingness to fulfil the role of Parish Priest, Bishop
Anthony invites Fr Paul to renew his commitment to priestly ministry.
At the same time, Bishop Anthony invites the parishioners to support Fr
Paul in his ministry.

Introduction to the Sacred Sites of the Church
Commentary
Bishop Anthony then leads Fr Paul around the church to several sacred
sites. While Fr Paul is already familiar with our parish church, Bishop
Anthony now formally entrusts it to Fr Paul’s care.
Bishop Anthony entrusts to Fr Paul, in order, the sacred sites pertinent to
our lives as Christians:
Baptismal Font
The procession around the church begins at the font, the place where we
first enter into the life, death and resurrection of Christ through the
waters of baptism.
Ambo
For most Christians, baptised in infancy, we hear the word of God for
several years before we receive the other sacraments. In the Rite of
Baptism for Children, the priest performs the Ephephetha Rite. He marks
the ears and mouth of the child with the sign of the cross, saying: “The
Lord Jesus made the deaf hear and the dumb speak. May he soon touch
your ears to hear God’s word, and your mouth to proclaim his faith, to
the praise and glory of God the Father.”
After gathering together for the Mass, we listen to the proclamation of the
God’s word before celebrating the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Altar
Christian Initiation, begun at baptism, is brought to fulfilment through
participation in the Eucharistic celebration and the reception of Holy
Communion. As Catholics, we believe that the celebration of the
Eucharist is both the summit of Christian life, and the fount from which
all the Church’s power flows.
Front of the Altar
Standing before the altar is a symbolic act which is part of several
sacramental rituals, most notably the vocation sacraments. Many
couples have stood before the altar of this church to declare their love and
commitment to each other in the Sacrament of Marriage. Carmelites
have also prostrated themselves before this altar in the Rite of
Ordination.
Tabernacle
In the tabernacle is reserved the Blessed Sacrament, which is taken to the
sick and the housebound, and given to those who are dying as viaticum
(“food for the journey”).
Confessional
The reconciliation chapel is central to the Rite of Penance. Through this
sacrament, our sins are forgiven, and the freedom from sin made possible
through Christ in baptism is restored.
Church Doors
Many of the rites of the Church begin with a greeting by the priest at the
entrance. It is also through the doors of the Church that we pass through
for the final time, and through which the community farewells us, in the
Funeral Rite.

Presidential Chair
The cathedra, the presidential chair of the Cathedral, symbolises the
authority of the bishop as the leader, chief teacher and liturgist of the
Diocese. The presidential chair does likewise, reminding us also of how
the bishop entrusts to his brother priests the responsibility of sharing in
this role with him in their respective parishes. When Fr Paul leads
liturgical celebrations from the presidential chair, he now does so as the
eleventh parish priest of Wentworthville.

Profession of Faith and Oath
Commentary
Fr Paul then, as a sign of his faith, recites the creed with his parishioners.
On this occasion, as it is a statement of his personal faith, the Nicene
Creed is recited with the statement “I believe…” Afterwards, he makes an
oath to uphold the teachings of the Church.
