Mass Media InfluenceIn the last 50 years the media influence has grown exponentially with the advance of technology, first there was the telegraph, then the radio, the newspaper, magazines, television and now the internet.

We live in a society that depends on information and communication to keep moving in the right direction and do our daily activities like work, entertainment, health care, education, personal relationships, traveling and anything else that we have to do.

A common person in the city usually wakes up checks the tv news or newspaper, goes to work, makes a few phone calls, eats with their family when possible and makes his decisions based on the information that he has either from their co workers, news, tv, friends, family, financial reports, etc.

What we need to be aware is that most of our decisions, beliefs and values are based on what we know for a fact, our assumptions and our own experience. In our work we usually know what we have to do based on our experience and studies, however on our daily lives we rely on the media to get the current news and facts about what is important and what we should be aware of.

We have put our trust on the media as an authority to give us news, entertainment and education. However, the influence of mass media on our kids, teenagers and society is so big that we should know how it really works.

How mass Media Influence worksOf all the media distribution channels the most influential has been the television, we are constantly exposed to thousands of images of violence, advertising, sex, celebrities and much more, in fact a its known that a child is exposed to about 40,000 ads a year.

But who owns the media, which are the companies or people that shape our values, beliefs and decisions? The media is basically dominated by five major companies they are:

Time Warner

VIACOM

Vivendi Universal

Walt Disney

Page 2: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

News Corp

Those 5 companies own 95% of all the media that we get every day. They own the major entertainment theme parks, entertainment movie studios, television and radio broadcast networks and programing, video news and sports entertainment. They also own integrated telecommunications, wireless phones, video games softwares, electronic media, the music industry and more.

Years ago there was more diversity in companies, but they have merged so now they are just a few and they have the power to shape the opinion and beliefs of us and our kids. So its important to be aware of what your kids are exposed to every day and you should also try to look at things from different perspectives and not just from the one the media gives you.

How does mass media influence young people?

Page 3: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

The media makes billions of dollars with the advertising they sell and that we are exposed to. We buy what we are told to be good, after seeing thousands of advertisings we make our buying decisions based on what we saw on Tv, newspapers or magazines to be a product we can trust and also based on what everyone else that we know is buying and their decision are also base don the media.

These are the effects of mass media in teenagers, they buy what they see on Tv, what their favorite celebrity advertise and what is acceptable by society based on the fashion that the media has imposed them.

There are some positive and negative influences in young people.

Here is a positive influence example, if there is a sport that is getting a lot of attention by the media and gains popularity among your friends and society, you will more likely want to practice the sport and be cool with all your friends. The result is that you will have fun with your friends and be more healthy because of the exercise your are doing.

However a negative influence in teenagers is the use of cigars by celebrity movie stars, the constant exposure of sex images, the excessive images of violence and exposure to thousands of junk food ads.

Young people are in a stage of life where they want to be accepted by their peers, they want to be loved and be successful. The media creates the ideal image of a beautiful men and women and tells you what are the characteristics of a successful person, you can see it in movies and tv. Its a subliminal way to tell you that if you are not like them you are not cool yet so its time to buy the stuff they buy and look like they look.

Another negative influence in teenagers that has grown over the last years are anorexia and obesity. There are millions of adolescents fighting obesity, but at the same time they are exposed to thousands of advertisements of junk food, while the ideas image of a successful person is told to be thin and wealthy.

Also more women are obsessive with losing weight even when they are not obese, there are many thin women that want to look like the super models and thin celebrities so they engage in eating disorders which leads to severe health issues and even death.

How Subliminal Advertising Tries To Make You Fat

Effects of violence in the MediaWhen we watch Tv or a movie we usually see many images of violence and people hurting others. The problem with this is that it can become traumatic especially in our children as we see it more and more. Our kids that are starting to grow and are shaping their personality values and beliefs can become aggressive or they can lose a sense of reality and fiction of what they are seeing.

In the past years there have been some cases of kids carrying a gun at school and even hurting others with it. Those kids have been linked to excessive use of violent video games and war images.

Another problem is that real war is used as a form of entertainment by the media, we should make our kids and teen aware that war is not a form of entertainment and that there is no win or lose like in video games, in real war everyone lose.

Page 4: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

How media influence public opinionAs i have said above, the media has a huge impact on society and also in public opinion. They can shape the public opinion in different ways depending of what is the objective.

For example, after the attacks of 911 the media gave a huge coverage of the event and exposed Osama guilty for the attack as they were told by the authorities. This shaped the public opinion to support the war on terrorism, the same happened with the war on Iraq. The problem is that if media received un accurate information then the public opinion supported a wrong cause, this is the power of public opinion influence.

Other ways to influence are with polls and trends, especially in political campaigns. The candidates that can pay for more tv and media exposure have more influence on public opinion and thus can receive more votes

Mass Media Influence

From the moment we wake up in the morning we are bombarded with media in all it's many forms. From the morning newspaper and it's many advertisements to the television commercials telling us what we need to buy. Even even when you turn on the radio during your daily commute you will be overwhelmed with new mainstream 'music' full of vulgarities and rudeness that could put you in a bad mood for the entire day. Media has a major influence in our lives, whether people like to admit it or not. Most media out there is harmless, people simply trying to sell you there product to make a living or tell you the news. Although more often then we care to admit the media has harmful messages and influence over us. From the violent video games that have filled the market to the Internet, which is filled with negative information and themes. Many experts say we need to evaluate the trend of today. Does the influence in our families from the media really build healthier stronger people? Or does it do the exact opposite? It would seem as though more often the naught the latter is the case.Media is often times used to convince massive amounts of people of something, almost a mass brainwashing. A good example of this is the media influence used by politicians. Joseph McCarthy used media influence to convince people of how terrible Communism was. He used it to support his 'witch hunt' of Communism in the United States. Another cases of the media effecting politics is the election of Ronald Regan and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Both were famous movie star actors and used that status to win in politics. The media often also dictates what we should and will buy. The media bombards us with what they deam 'great books' or 'great movies' telling us to go out and buy them right away. One good example of this is the widely published book Eragon. The book was criticized by many literary experts for being very 'poorly written' however it was written by a very young author and that created a media vortex that launched the book. Many still agree that the book would have never even been published if the boy's parents didn't happen to be publishers.Other cases of books who received major boosts from media attention include the Harry Potter and Twilight series. Although the books were attacked by many experts for their 'bad plot' and 'poor writing' and in Twilight's case it's unoriginality thanks to mass media attention the books became bestsellers. In all these cases the books, held up by media attention, lead to movies which in almost all cases weren't particularly good either.Craig Anderson is a distinguished Professor of Psychology at Iowa State University. He is an expert of media influence. He conducted a study with a young teenage boy where the boy played his favorite video game while being video taped. After the tape was replayed for the boy he commented on how he, "Didn't think he had been swearing that much", he also commented on his angry facial expressions.Anderson suggests we simply look at the amount of time we spend playing video games, watching TV or on the Internet. He has been quoted on saying, "A reality show about the life of the average American would be rather boring. It would be filled with hours of them just watching TV or surfing the Internet".

Page 6: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

There is also many myths surrounding the violent influence of the media and it's effect on people. These myths include, that only boys are effected, or only children or young children, or only those who already have an aggressive history, one myth goes as far as to say it only effects sick psychopaths. All of these myths are untrue however. Anyone any age can be effected by violent media influence. It is also suggested by experts that children under the age of two do not watch any Television, whether it be video games, movies, or even 'supposedly' educational content. Prolonged exposure to television at such a young age has been proven to lead to attention deficit disorder (ADD) and problems with school later on.So it is clear that the massive media influence in our lives does have a negative effect on many people. Regardless of age, gender or location violent or suggestive media can effect us all. So next time your in the book or movie rental store looking for something to buy, think about trying to find something you will like opposed to buying something that everyone tells you will like.

Media influence or media effects are used in media studies, psychology, communication

theory and sociology to refer to the theories about the ways in which mass media affect how

their audiencesthink and behave.

Connecting the world to individuals and reproducing the self-image of society, critiques in the early-to-mid 20th

century suggested that media weaken or delimit the individual's capacity to act autonomously — sometimes

being ascribed an influence reminiscent of the telescreens of the dystopian novel 1984. "Mid 20th-

Television broadcasting has a large amount of control over the content society watches and the times in which

it is viewed. This is a distinguishing feature of traditional media which New media have challenged by altering

the participation habits of the public. The internet creates a space for more diverse political opinions, social and

cultural viewpoints and a heightened level of consumer participation. There have been suggestions that

allowing consumers to produce information through the internet will lead to an overload of information.

[edit]Media influenced violence

Many studies illustrate that consuming mass media does not lead to violence. However, this is a contentious

issue.

To explain the problem of violence in society, researchers should begin with that social violence and seek to

explain it with reference, quite obviously, to those who engage in it: their identity, background, character and so

on.

Gauntlet goes on to criticize studies that focus on children by stating that they do not utilize adults as a control

group, and that the studies are conducted primarily to further a "barely-concealed conservative ideology." He

counters the premise of these studies with the concept that not all depictions of violence are even bad to

witness. USC Professor Henry Jenkins, for instance, suggested in his speech to congress that The Basketball

Diaries utilizes violence in a form of social commentary that provides clear social benefit.[1]

Gauntlet explains further that objects defined as "violent" or "anti-social" may not be judged as such in the

minds of the viewer and tend to be viewed in artificial circumstances. These objects are furthermore based on

previous studies with flawed methodology, and are not grounded in theory. Additionally, he claims that the

effects model hkiudukfyh attempt to understand the meanings of media.[2]

Page 8: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

Historical criticisms situate the 'meta-narrative' of effects theory within a long history of distrust of new

forms of media, dating as far back as Socrates's objections to the deleterious effects due to the

written alphabet.

Political criticisms pose an alternative conception of humans as rational, critical subjects who are alert to

genre norms and adept at interpreting and critiquing media representations, instead of passively absorbing

them.

Supporters of effects theory contend that commercials, advertising and voter campaigns prove that media

influence behavior. In the 20th century, aggressive media attention and negative coverage of trials involving

celebrities like Roscoe Fatty Ar buckle or Michael Jackson have influenced the general public's opinion, before

the trials effectively started[3]. However, these critics do point out that while the media could have an effect on

people's behavior this isn't necessarily always the case.

Critics of the media effects theory point out that many copycat murders, suicides and other violent acts nearly

always happen in abnormal upbringings. Violent, emotionally neglectful or aggressive environments influence

behavior more than watching certain programs, films or listening to certain music. Most people who carry out

these acts are also mentally unstable to begin with.

Also there are other thinkers who criticize effects based research, such as Terry Flew and Sal Humphrey,

Barker and Freedman.[4],[5], [6]

-Martin Barker (2001)[7] criticised Elizabeth Newson who alleged link between media violence and real life

violence in her report in 1994, Brooke (2003–07),for example talks about this in details. [8] [1], and the report

gained media attention when it claimed the horror film Child's Play 3 had influenced two 10-year-old boys'

behavior and led to the Murder of James Bulger in Feb. 1993. After examining and assessing Newson’s report,

it was apparent that there was no clear link between the film and the crime. Critics pointed out that Newson's

case studies were reliant on press accounts and opinions rather than independent research. However,

Newson's report was influential, and has led to more censorship of videos and more concern from the British

Board of Film classification on the psychological effects of media violence. The attention and question become

whether they were watching violent media.

But Barker (2001) [7] doesn’t agree with Elizabeth Newson. He reject her claim about the connection between

media violence and real life violence, in his argument he justifies his position, he indicates that there was not a

scrap of evidence that the boys had seen the movie and Child's Play 3 is a moral film. He also criticized anti

media campaigns and described them as ignorant and disguised political campaigns. He states that these

claims are represented by media and most of people have no chance to check the credibility of them, he also

points out that these films including Child's Play 3 are often attacked because they deal with political issues.

Moreover, he lists real cases, for example “a man takes a gun and shoots his entire family after watching the

news, arrested and tried, he explains his actions on the basis that the world news was so bad there seemed no

Page 9: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

point in anyone going on living”. Barker suggests that this case for example is no different that other putative

cases of media a causing violence, Barker said that we should not always blindly blame the media because

people are not copycats, instead we should be aware of someone's mental state and take other factors into

account before making such claims. For example, in his case he states that the man's reaction was abnormal.

Therefore, his behavior could not be explained by suggesting “the effects of the news”. There are other social

and cultural factors in criminal acts in which the media are not the basic influence. Barker also suggests 'that

we must look beyond a specific film to think about the specific context in which it has been consumed, and the

wider social background of the people'.[9],according to Barker there is no such thing called violence in the media

that either could or could not cause violence, we should rather pay attention to how social factors and

background make some people consume media in specific way.[10], for instance, even the news also show lots

of violence, so people should rather pay attention to how social factors and background make some people

consume media in particular way. In addition Barker (2001) proposes further research, he suggests that the

theory of media violence connection must be tested because identification with particular element in a film is

not something can be seen. He also noted problem with campaigners treating delinquents as normal people

who become influenced by the media. Therefore, he suggests further research on how these people

understand and consume media.

-Critics of effects research see no connection between exposure to media violence and real life violence,

because humans are not copycats and can realize what is wrong and what is right. Although some research

claims that heavy exposure to media violence can lead to more aggressive behavior, it has been suggested

that exposure alone does not cause a child to commit crimes.[11]

-Flew and Humphreys (2005) said that the assumptions of effects researchers are frequently flawed. According

to Flew and Humphreys, Freedman (2001) and Goldstein (2001) the number of studies on games and violence

is small and the research suffers from flawed methodologies which do very little to prove a direct link. [12] Terry

Flew and Sal Humphreys also state ‘that differing context of consumption will always mean we need to take

account of the particularities of players and how and why they play, effects researches often give insufficient

account to the relevance of cultural contexts and the way in which media are actually implicated in the

circulation of meanings in our cultures'.[13]

-Freedman (2007) [14] is another thinker who rejects this idea, in reference to the FCC ‘the Federal

Communications Commission in US’ report that suggests link between media violence and real life violence,

Freedman indicates the lack of discussion and states that the FCC does not make a sufficient distinction

between people’s opinions, intuitions and musings on the one hand, and the hard scientific data on the other,

and he indicates the lack of discussion of one of the strongest arguments against the idea that media violence

causes aggression. According to Freedman the rate of violent crime in the United states increased sharply from

1965 to 1980 and some people blamed that increase on media. The rate of violent crime leveled off until about

1992, since that time, television continued to have violent programs, there was also more scenes and media

Page 10: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

showing more violence, if exposure to violent media cause real violence one would surely expect the rate of

violent crime to have increased sharply, yet, since 1992 there has been a dramatic drop in violent crime, it

seems clear that media violence did not cause the earlier increase. Therefore, it is widely accepted that there is

no convincing evidence that prove that media violence cause violent crime or any type of real life violence. For

example a recent long-term outcome study of youth found no long-term relationship between watching violent

television and youth violence or bullying [15]

[edit]Political

Certain groups tend to argue for media effects in an effort to promote a political cause. Demands for the

banning of certain songs or the labeling of obscene albums came specifically from conservative political groups

in the United States. However, Tipper Gore, the wife of Al Gore, was the founder of the Parents Music

Resource Center, and was the main figure in pushing for warning labels on music although she does not fit into

the conservative demographic. They argued that such material had simple and identifiable effects on children,

and thus should be banned/labelled. Political factions use the media to influence possible members into joining

their groups.

[edit]Framing

Main articles: Agenda-setting theory and Framing (social sciences)

The agenda-setting process is an almost unavoidable part of news gathering by the large organizations which

make up much of the mass media. (Just four main news agencies — AP, UPI, Reuters andAgence-France-

Presse — claim together to provide 90% of the total news output of the world’s press, radio and television. [citation

needed]) Stuart Hall points out that because some of the media produce material which often is good, impartial

and serious, they are accorded a high degree of respect and authority. However, in practice the ethics of the

press and television are closely related to that of the hegemonic establishment, providing vital support to the

existing order. Independence (e.g. of the BBC) is not “a mere cover, it is central to the way power and ideology

are mediated in societies like ours.”

The public is bribed with good radio, television and newspapers into an acceptance of the biased, the

misleading, and the status quo. The media are not, according to this approach, crude agents of propaganda.

They organize public understanding. However, the overall interpretations they provide in the long run are those

most preferred by, and least challenging to, those with economic power. Greg Philo demonstrates this in his

1991 article, “Seeing is Believing”, in which he showed that recollections of the 1984 UK miners’ strike were

strongly correlated with the media presentation of the event, including the perception of the picketing as largely

violent when violence was rare, and the use by the public of phrases which had appeared originally in the

media.

Page 11: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

McCombs and Shaw (1972) demonstrate the agenda-setting effect at work in a study conducted in Chapel Hill,

North Carolina, USA during the 1968 presidential elections. A representative sample of un-decided voters was

asked to outline the key issues of the election as it perceived them. Concurrently, the mass media serving

these subjects were collected and their content was analyzed. The results showed a definite correlation

between the two accounts of predominant issues. "The evidence in this study that voters tend to share the

media's composite definition of what is important strongly suggests an agenda-setting function of the mass

media." (McCombs and Shaw),.

[edit]New media

Theorists such as Louis Wirth and Talcott Parsons have emphasized the importance of mass media as

instruments of social control. In the 21st century, with the rise of the internet, the two-way relationship between

mass media and public opinion is beginning to change, with the advent of new technologies such as blogging.

Mander’s theory is related to Jean Baudrillard’s concept of ‘hyperreality’. We can take the 1994 O.J.

Simpson trial as an example, where the reality reported on was merely the catalyst for thesimulacra (images)

created, which defined the trial as a global event and made the trial more than it was. Essentially, hyperreality

is the concept that the media are not merely a window on to the world (as if a visiting alien were watching

television), but are part of the reality they describe. Hence (although additionally there is the question of navel-

gazing) the media’s obsession with media-created events.

It is this which led Marshall McLuhan in the 1960s to say that "the medium is the message", and to suggest that

mass media are increasingly creating a "global village". For example, there is evidence that Western media

influence in Asia is the driving force behind rapid social change: “it is as if the 1960s and the 1990s were

compressed together.” A notable example is the recent introduction of television to Bhutan, resulting in

rapid Westernization. This raises questions of ‘cultural imperialism’ (Schiller) — the de facto imposition, through

economic and political power and through the media, of Western (and in particular US) culture.

[edit]An instrument for social control

Social scientists have made efforts to integrate the study of the mass media as an instrument of control into the

study of political and economic developments in the Afro-Asian countries. David Lerner (1958) has emphasized

the general pattern of increase in standard of living, urbanization, literacy and exposure to mass media during

the transition from traditional to modern society. According to Lerner, while there is a heavy emphasis on the

expansion of mass media in developing societies, the penetration of a central authority into the daily

consciousness of the mass has to overcome profound resistance.

Page 12: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

[edit]Government and Mass Media

They include licensing in advance; censorship of offending material before publication; seizure of offending

material; injunctions against publication of a newspaper or book or of specified content; requirement of surety

bonds against libel or other offense; compulsory disclosure of ownership and authority; post publication criminal

penalties for objectionable matter; post publication collection of damages in a civil action; post publication

correction of libel and other misstatements; discrimination in granting access to news source and facilities;

discrimination and denial in the use of communications facilities for distribution; taxes; discriminatory subsidies;

and interference with buying, reading and listening.

[edit]The public sphere

It is an objectionable matter that the Government always tries to harass the Printers, Editors as well as making

many media laws, but sometimes it is needed. Now a question might arise, when?..... Nowadays, most of the

Journalist are involved with politics and there report also made under there politic related. It is not finished

every kinds of newspapers and others media is running under a political control. So where there is a political

control there must be some of false and fabricated news will be publish. For a developing country there are five

sectors must be neat and clean means they must work not for the politics but for the peoples of the country,

which are;

(1) Media:Media included all kinds of media namely; newspapers, TV, Radio, Internet, Books etc. (2) Education: It included all kinds of School, College and Universities students and also teachers. (3) Judicial: It included all the person related with judiciary namely; Judges, Lawyers etc. (4) Medical: It included all kinds of doctors Government or private. (5) Defence: It included all kinds of members appointed for the protection of a country internally or externally namely; Police, Army, Navy, Air etc.

[edit]Mass Media in a free enterprise society

Although a sizable portion of mass media offerings - particularly news, commentaries, documentaries, and

other informational programmes - deal with highly controversial subjects, the major portion of mass media

offerings are designed to serve an entertainment function. These programmes tend to avoid controversial

issues and reflect beliefs and values sanctified by mass audience. This course is followed by Television

networks, whose investment and production costs are high. Jerry Mander’s work has highlighted this particular

outlook. According to him, the atomized individuals of mass society lose their souls to the phantom delights of

Page 13: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

the film, the soap opera, and the variety show. They fall into a stupor, or apathetic hypnosis, that Lazarsfeld

called the ‘narcotizing dysfunction’ of exposure to mass media.

Individuals become ‘irrational victims of false wants’ - the wants which corporations have thrust upon them, and

continue to thrust upon them, through both the advertising in the media (with its continual exhortation to

consume) and through the individualist consumption culture it promulgates. Thus, according to the Frankfurt

School, leisure has been industrialized. The production of culture had become standardized and dominated by

the profit motive as in other industries. In a mass society leisure is constantly used to induce the appropriate

values and motives in the public. The modern media train the young for consumption. ‘Leisure had ceased to

be the opposite of work, and had become a preparation for it.’

[edit]Mass media, mass culture and elite

The relation of the mass media to contemporary popular culture is commonly conceived in terms of

dissemination from the elite to the mass. The long-term consequences of this are significant in conjunction with

the continuing concentration of ownership and control of the media, leading to accusations of a 'media elite'

having a form of 'cultural dictatorship'. Thus the continuing debate about the influence of 'media barons' such

as Conrad Black and Rupert Murdoch.

For example, the UK Observer (March 1, 1998) reported the Murdoch-owned HarperCollins' refusal to

publish Chris Patten's East and West, because of the former Hong Kong Governor's description of the Chinese

leadership as "faceless Stalinists" possibly being damaging to Murdoch's Chinese broadcasting interests. In

this case, the author was able to have the book accepted by another publisher, but this type of censorship may

point the way to the future. A related, but more insidious, form is that of self-censorship by members of the

media in the interests of the owner, in the interests of their careers.

The Effects of Mass Media

History and Theory of New Media12/4/00

How much we are realizing about the effects of mass media today? I do not think that we are realizing much, I mean we know some points but we are just ignore that because it has already been part of our life. You can often see a world where media can control and alter human life.

I would like to propose several ways to approach about mass media today using by the case of the commercialization, animations, and media cultures. Animations, television, and computers are

facts of life for today's people, especially children. "The effect of TV, as the most recent and spectacular electric ex! tension of our central nervous system, is hard to grasp for various

reasons. Since it has affected the totality of our lives, personal and social and political¡ (McLuhan, 317). One reason children are so vulnerable to the messages of television is that they take what

they see on television to be reality. Very young children equate all of television with reality. The first approach about the media cultures today, I will show a case that the young child has

been influenced by the mass media which they took advantage of him. Naturally, as children get older they adopt new definitions of television reality; however, I was so surprised that how much the mass media can change their viewpoint in such an early age. The MBC Korean broadcasting television decided to start a program that a famous pop group (called Groove Over Dose- G.O.D.)

of five male singers will babysat a nine-month-old baby until the baby (name Jaemin Han)

Page 14: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

become two years old. The parents of the baby are both working, so the G.O.D. will babysat the baby three days a week. The TV episode (called "The Babydiary") was start on March 5, 2000 and the program shows on every week to show a whole week's diary. They live in a boarding

house, so the baby can live with them three days per week. The each group member shares five different parts, which are the father, mother, cook, recreation and fashion coordinator. The group member's ages are from 18 to 27 years old. The oldest member is a father and his role is to take the responsibility for everything. The mother's role is put the baby to sleep and have to take care the baby even though he awakes ! from sleep in the middle of the night. The cook has to figure

out how to make the baby food, how many times he has to feed the milk a day and how warm the milk should be, etc. The recreation person's role should entertain him especially when he starts to cry and grumble. At the last but not the least the fashion coordinator's role is not only make him

look pretty but also practical. Everything is so new to them too, so it has been took a while to adjust each person's role for couple months.

There are several important things to point out from these whole baby diary issues. First, this group was not so popular until they start doing this babysitting; also they had a limited audience which is a young age group. However, after they start doing this program, their fan age group is getting broader to older age. "The G.O.D. = The group who raise a baby Jaemin- They be come popular to female age 20s and 30s.¡(Sports Chosun Nov 17, 2000) Why? I think the answer for

that is really simple because the program stimulates the audience's sensibility, which is their maternity. Nowadays, people do not stimulate to some degree because they are already familiar for exposing too much from all kinds of media. However, if people stimulate from the most basic

sensibility, they will stimulate and respond by that. "G.O.D.- The rainbow connection between the parent generation and children generation (Sports Seoul No! v 21, 2000).¡ The article is about the

point of excellence for this episode, which brakes the extinction of wall between the parent generation and children generation. Nowadays, the wall between those two generations were

built with poverty and rich, spirit and material, letter and cell phone, radio and TV, etc. Both live in same period and space, at the same time they carry on different styles and visual angles of their life. However, the dance group G.O.D. connects a bridge between these two generation. These

two generation watch their episode and talk about it together, also they listen their music together too. Therefore, the Jaemin become their mediator who connects the analog and digital

generation. The effects of mass media has pros and cons, this is the only good point of this whole Babydiary

issue. As a result of the MBC's good marketing plan, they became the most popular group in Korea right now. Second, these media have effected the baby so quickly. For instance, the baby already has judge skills for the beauty values. What I mean by that is, he keeps avoiding the bad

looking guy of the members. That means he already exposed from media so his value of the beauty is same as the media represent. The mass media has an influence, which is unavoidable,

so the beauty standard of his viewpoint is really same as the media represents such as the movies, televisions, advertising and commercials are m! ostly using a super model to represents product. The media divided a certain people to certain level such as nice and ugly looking of man and woman. The television does influence children's view of social reality. One effect it can have

is to encourage stereotyped opinions about social topics such as beauty value. Television generally presents highly stereotyped commercials are outstanding culprits in the presentation of beauty stereotypes. This seems to be the effect of television being a visual medium, even without

any effect to see physical beauty. The media give the value system what's good and bad, what's pretty and ugly, the media itself

influenced that much in non only that young age children but also grown up. Therefore, how we visually show to people is really important role as a media designer. Another example of the baby

is that only an 18 months old baby operates an audio all by himself. Also, he picks and choose the song he wants to listen. I could not believe that because I have never thought it is possible to

that young age also, when I was young, I have not had that kind of experiences before. The scariest thing is that the baby always listens their (G.O.D) songs, so he did not have chances to listen a children's song. Even though they tried to play the children's song, but the baby was just stand there without any moves what so ever. However, he starts to! dance when he hears their music, which is Hip-hop and R&B (Rhythm and Blues). In other words, other ordinary kids who

listen children's song regularly, they will not have a same feeling like the Jamin does. That

Page 15: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

means, he already has had effects by their music. Another example is that Jaemin knows exactly how he has to show in the camera. He exposed by camera 24 hours per three days a week, so he is already been familiar with it. Therefore, after he doing something that he thinks its funny or bad things to do, he stares the camera. How much the person is being exposed by media hinge

on the person's life.

"G.O.D. The Babydiary Jaemin Han had received appreciation award from MBC" (Dong-A, Nov 25, 2000). The reason for that award is that this program was the first ranking TV episode since

they start it. He was the youngest winner for that award; however, the parents were refused to get that awards also there were so many commercial proposals too. They just did not want to make the baby special because of the TV program (the media). Also, they did not want to fall into the materialism from all the money temptation when he starts to doing the commercials. I think the decision, which the parents made, was the right way for Jamin's future. As a Korean proverb

says, the habit from three years old goes to 6o years old which means the habit and memories from young age will effects their rest of life. Therefore, a process of the person's growth will be

under the control of their education. Children tend to learn what they see on television more thoroughly than what they read or hear on radio. This power means that the responsibility of television producers is much greater, the need for quality more pressing than with the older

media. The second approach about the commercialization today, I will explain using the case of

animations (especially Japanese animations). The animation is a worldwide these days and has a huge impact on animation industry, not only they make animations but also they make animation movies, video games, cards, and toys, etc. For instance, the Pokemon animation made movies, video games, toys, and cards. That means everyone see the same movie, play the same game,

talk about same thing worldwide. I heard that one child got killed by his friend during they had fight for the Pokemon cards. Why I felt terrible when I heard that news because of the piece of

card; one child got killed from his friend. Whose fault is it? What if the media did not expose that much of the Pokemon issues to innocent young children? I read one article from newspaper a

year ago, the article was about Japanese exports their animation movies to other country especially United States with really cheap price. The Japanese's strateg! ic for the

cosmopolitanism is doing cultural export by cheap animation movies. Think about it, on Saturday morning, almost every child sits front of television with milk and chocolate cookies watching the Japanese cartoons, so they get used to Japanese animation and culture. Nowadays 50-60% is the Japanese cartoon in major television network, which is really scary part. They watch these Japanese cartoons through their childhood, which leads not to have any negative feelings for other country's cultures. The Japanese people's intention was to aim that. Of course there are other things that the American children do not want to watch the American cartoons anymore. One reason is that they are tired of watching the super hero series or Tom and Jerry's which is rewarding the good and punishing the evil over and over again. It has been changed from that

approach of cartoon to the viewer is in charge of the character which is the way of the Pokemon trained other creatures. The opposition between the styles of American cartoons and Japanese cartoon defined the interactions between viewer and characters. I think that the animator should

figure it out how to meet the needs of the times instead of import other country's animation (cultures) without filtration. They have to think about it more carefully for the future generations.

Thirty-six years ago Marshall McLuhan advanced the revoluti! onary thesis that "the medium is the message". His idea was that each medium of communication produces social and psychological effects on its audience, particular social relations and particular form of

consciousness or way of thinking, that are quite independent of the content being transmitted. These effects constitute the message of the medium. McLuhan's famous phrase is widely quoted even if not widely understood. However, his phrase is the most important theory in media history.

"The only way we are ever going to take control of the technology and make them serve the desire of a broad mass of people for a better life is if we can really start to get at the questions.

What's it for? What kind of life we want to have? (Lunenfeld, 206-7)." "My opinion is that the damaging effects the electronic media can have on children are not intrinsic to the media but

grow out the ways the media are used much of the content of commercial TV shows may have a negative effect on children's social attitudes. Commercials themselves use sophisticated

Page 16: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

techniques to manipulate viewers into wanting certain products, and young children have no defense against such techniques (Greenfield, 2-3).¡ Television watching can become a passive,

deadening activity if adults do not guide their children's viewing and each children to watch critically and to learn from what they watch.

In conclusion, the media can be used to promote social growth and thinking skills. Television and the newer electronic media, is used wisely, have great positive potential for learning and

development. If they give children visually different mental skills from those developed by reading and writing. Television is a better medium than the printed word for conveying certain types of

information, and it makes learning available to group of children who do not do well in traditional school situations and even to people who cannot read. At this point, how the designer should

function in this digital era? There are many ways to designer can achieve for their goal which are just function as a information delivery, pursuit aesthetics, money, or another ways? I will say

based on my opinion, yes there is something else than, money, aesthetic, and information, which are creativity keep pace with the rapid digital era. Past century hold dominion over the rational,

this century that we called the era of chaos. The graphic design in the past with all the visual, we called visual design. However, nowadays it has been changed since we have to deal with lots of media whom we have to communicate, we called interactive design. Therefore, the information from we have seen and hear only using your eye, but we have to indicate the information using

by your ear,! so we need to interchange between educator, writer, designer, engineer, sociologist, and physiologist. We have to expand our senses with the voice in the screen. Therefore, the design is focused on human itself other than lots of unnecessary things for the society. The

winner for that era will be the person who has flexible thinking power. Also, the designer must have a their true character. Follow the path of virtue with right-minded should be their goal. In

addition to, the designer should have to find their life's passion, develop themselves-esteem, and create self- appreciation which lead to more positive self-esteem. With all that in mind the

designer have a powerful persuasion.

Mass Media's Influence    Uploaded by joa_007 (72) on Apr 20, 2005

“People are more influenced by mass media than they think. What evidence is there to support this statement?”

By Mass Media I mean ‘the whole body of media reaching large numbers of public’ the major ones being newspapers, television and the World Wide Web also now as internet. The main purposes of mass media are to provide information, entertainment and advertisement. In this essay I will discuss the influence that Mass Media has in the general public and giving the evidence to support the statement “People are more influenced by mass media than they think. …”.

The history of mass media can be said that started from the ancient Greece. Philosophers, generals and politicians of the ancient Society discuss issues and after spread to the public by the use of word of mouth. The ancient Greek Drama and poetry can be considered as a form of mass media, communicates a message to the society. In other words since the early years people has always being influenced by Mass Media.

In today’s world people cannot leave without Mass Media and with the help of technological improvements to send messages to the masses is becoming easier and easier. As we are been shower with tons of advertising,

Page 17: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

information and other sort of materials by the different types of Mass Media has influence in our everyday life styles.

Newspapers are typically daily or weekly publication that contains news and opinion of current events, featuring articles, and advertising. By fact ‘there are now about 9000 daily newspapers around the world.’ Therefore newspapers reach a wide audience worldwide, which is why newspaper is a type of Mass Media.

The newspapers are an incredible influence tool in society; they can easily turn on people emotions in favor or against an issue or something. This is because we as readers tend to believe everything that is written in the newspaper even do it might be the wrong information. We can take the case around 12 years ago of the murder of James Bulger by Robert Thompson and Jon Venables, the British press had alleged that the kids were influence to commit such an act because of a spiteful video that they had watched, at the end the end they two kinds had not seen that video. What does this tell us about the newspapers? They mislead information that goes to the public which immediately influences the public to react, in this case the parent of kids prosecute the media that had influence their kids, but they don’t know that the same media is influencing them to do act that way.

The same case of the Bulger Killers according to Salmon Rusty ‘…they can only life the rest of their lives in anonymous peace…’ although they had they had shown an excellent recovery according to the experts, so in this case what are the press doing? They are influencing people’s feelings regarding these two individuals for their past acts, which they already pay the time in jail.

Newspapers can be very biased about a story. Although reporter tend of being impartial about a current event, sometimes is not always likely to be that way. An example of this we can take the newspaper coverage of the Iraqi war; also know as war on terrorism. In this case the American Press influenced the readers to unleash feeling of patriotism about their army, which lead to feeling of prejudice against Middle Eastern looking people. If at the time or still a Middle Eastern looking person is to be seen in America bring fear to people, the articles published in newspapers help this influence of fear to spread.

Television is ‘the transmission of visual images of moving and stationary objects, generally with accompanying sound, as electromagnetic waves and the reconversion of received waves into visual images.’ Television is of very big influence in today’s world. It transmits images and as one has probably heard of the saying – One picture worth’s more than thousands of words – this is way have a major influence in the viewers. Mainly in the consume habits of the public, yes, advertising is probably one the most influential item about Mass Media. ‘Every the average American sees more than 38,000 TV commercials…’ now if we multiply that amount to 20 seconds, which is approximately the average commercial lasts will give us a result of 760.000 second an average American sees of commercial advertising products. How does this affect their consuming habits? The fast food industry is a great example of the influence of advertising in people consuming habits.

According to the documentary by Morgan Spurlock ‘Supersize me’, only McDonalds itself spend $1.4 Billion US dollar in direct media advertising, which includes television with the contrast of the 5 a day vegetable campaign that spend in his peak year the sum of $2 million US dollars. But what those this figures mean? These means that McDonalds spend a larger amount of cash into advertisement to persuade the general public to consume their food, especially kids; that are easy to influence with just giving them toys. What does this influence has on the general American population? ‘More than 60% of Adults in America are overweigh or obese.’ In others words the advertising of McDonalds and all fast food industries are working efficiently, they get large sums of profit because of their influence in the public of buying them.

The clothes industry also used Television as main type of media to advertise it goods. They also use celebrities and famous athletes in their advertising campaigns. These are very influential in the population for the reason that many of these athletes and celebrities are like role model for kids. Michel Jordan, David Beckham can be said to inspired kids to play a respective sport and to even wanted to look like them. Their popularity influence the society to a great extent that not only them, but also the clothing firms make large amount of cash of the influenced buyers – to look cool wearing the latest Jordan Shoes –.

Propaganda can also be achieving trough use of television. In Bush administration the television coverage of his speeches about War on Terrorism acquaint that Iraq possessed weapons of mass destruction. Around year and a half later no weapons of mass destruction have been found. And the American citizens were convinced about the unproven fact that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and were ready to sue it against America. This is other example of the influence of Television in the viewers.

Internet ‘also known as the World Wide Web (WWW), it contains of a web of computers working together and

Page 18: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

connecting to each other like a spider web, and it allows the person to research all kinds of material on their computer and learn more and the topic or issue they are after.’ this is the newest type of Mass Media there it reaches world wide, if one has a webpage made in Thailand someone in Colombia can see it. That is how amazing Internet is, distances become shorter and shorter.

One of the main problems is that Internet is very addictive; games influence kids to spend hours and hours sitting down in front of the screen practically wasting time. This have an effect on less kids developing social skills, therefore it link to the depression problem that most teenagers are suffering from in the 20th century.

One can find anything, absolute anything in the Internet; if we got that ‘The number of World Wide Web pages indexed by the Google search engine is 3,083,324,652 pages.’ One look for lets says the lyrics of the cucaracha in Russian language; there is a pretty high chance of finding it. This is way Internet is so controversial, finding web pages that helps revels produce weapons, show druggies to grow drugs, they can influence people to do acts that society consider wrong, I mean extremely wrong. But at the same time the Internet has help million of people like me to finish their work more efficiently and I short time.

Other example of the increasing influence of Internet on society is the next fact ‘2002 online sales rose 34% to $47.98 billion from $35.87 billion in 2001. Of which, $17.4 billion were in the fourth quarter alone, up from $12.4 billion in 2001.’ these number show the increase of use of the internet in business, therefore advertising in internet is very influential and persuasive too. Overall I conclude that Mass Media does have an effect of society. For the simple fact that is become part of our daily routine. Every morning the family guy reads the newspapers to get inform with out any type of criticisms. Citizens of society spend hours and hours watching Television to get entertain, the same case with the Internet. So as becoming part of our daily life, we can say that has a unconscious effect in our habits, like the shopping habits that people has these days, if they something on television, the Internet or the newspapers there is a high probability that they will consume it. Or the way society acts, if the Media said that something is wrong, like the Bulger killer case, society believe it.

Essay-The mass media and their influence on people's ideas

Good morning all!I'm practicing writing. And this is my first time here. Please help me check this essay!Thank you.

The mass media, including TV, radio and newspapers, have great influence in shaping people's ideas. To what extent do you agree or disagree this statement? Give reasons for your answer. The mass media, including TV, radio, newspapers play a very important role in our modern life. They have change our life very much. In my opinion, it is not execrable to say that they have a great influence in shaping people's ideas, both for the better and for the worse.First, the mass media affect people's fashion. Simply take a glance at the way you dress right now, it was probably something you have pick up over the internet or magazines. What we are wearing may look similar to what famous

Page 19: Mass Media Does Bring Negative Effects Toward Society

actors or singers have worn recently. And all of the things we often to is to imitate the models appear every day in fashion shows. Second, we cannot deny that the mass media have a great contribution to shaping our ways of thinking. What we watch on TV, radio: what we read in newspaper and magazines affect ,without our awareness, a great deal to our thinking. Does what Obama, Bill Gates say on TV mean anything to you? Does what your music idols wear affect your taste of fashion? I definitely believe the answer will be "yes". When choosing what to wear, most of us have a tendency to choose what is said or shown to be fashionable by famous people.Third, it is obvious that the mass media also play an important role in our attitude to life. Some people complained that children nowadays tend to be lazier and more violent and want to come in for a share of social's product as much as possible. This is simply the result of bad programmes shown on T.V all time, incontrollable websites and even the carelessness of parents. To be free from their children, some people allow the children to surf the webs, without noticing that there are plenty of disasters on Internet which the young have little experience to deal with. People, especially teenagers, always have an idol and they tend to follow what their idols do and say no matter these things are good or bad.In conclusion, we have absolutely no control over the media. However, we do have the final decision on the path we choose to take. The extent of the power mass media is able to influence us only reaches this far, the rest is really still within our control.
