Cimply Putting it…. OK. Enough already!...As I write this article it is the first day of the PGA Championship at TCP Harding Park in San Francis- co. With the pandemic it is quite a different feel without fans, but the TV ratings for golf are quite high this year since many sporting events have been cancelled. One of my favorite sport’s movies is “The Legend of Bagger Vance.” The setting for the movie is Savannah Georgia amidst the great depression. It stars Matt Damon, who plays Captain Junuh, Will Smith, who is a golf caddy, and Junuh’s high school/pre-war sweetheart played by Charlize Theron. She is the one who is trying to save Savannah’s economy during the depression by sponsoring a golf tournament between Bobby Jones, Sam Snead, and Captain Junuh. Junuh is a well respected local hero/athlete who served with honor in WWI. However when he returned from the war, and because of his experiences during the war, he turned to booze to help quiet the demons lurking in his head. He hadn’t had any contact with his girlfriend since his return from the war, but when she calls him to play in the tournament against the two world class champions he couldn’t say “No”. At first Junuh is badly embarrassed. His play is horrific and his confidence is shaken. Will Smith, his caddy, continues to push, pull, coach, teach, and explain the game to him. By the end of the second round, Junuh is right in the hunt with Jones and Snead. Our pastor emeritus, Msgr. Andraschko, I know would agree that remembering how to play the game of golf is a metaphor for remembering how to play the game of life. One time Will Smith tells Junuh, “golf is a game that can be played but never won.” It means that life entails playing our best against the course, and not against others. As we know, especially during this pandemic, life can be so tragic and we can easily say, “I’ve had enough.” That’s where Junuh was at the beginning of the movie. Will Smith also makes several other quotes during the movie. He made Junuh watch Bobby Jones prepare to hit the ball—his pre-shot routine. He coached him to not try to hit the perfect shot, but wanted the perfect shot to find him. He quieted Junuh and blocked out of his mind the desire of the crowd to see a great shot. When you and I say, “Enough”, because life has grown too hard, or we have grown too weary, or our circumstances have grown too tragic, it is an honest cry from a human heart that a certain breaking point has been reached. However, when we say “Enough”, what does our faith say? Take and eat, for this is my body given up for you. Take and drink, for this is the blood of the new eternal covenant poured out for the forgiveness of sins. We are reminded by God to see only the fairway, to play out of love for the game—not to try to hit the perfect shot, but to allow the perfect shot to come to us. We are here for a purpose, and while we might not win the match, our caddy, not Bagger Vance but the Holy Spirit, is telling us there is another hole to play and a chance to make the best shot of our lives. By the way, if you want to see if Junuh beats the two champions you have to watch the movie. Make it a great week. clc

Living Beyond Sunday

In Sympathy

August 9th, 2020 | 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time

We would like to welcome the following parishioners to our Holy Spirit Family. We are so glad that you are here!

The boat “was being tossed about by waves, for the wind was against it.” How often do we feel like this little fishing boat, being tossed around by the angst in our culture? As missionary disciples, we can easily feel overcome by the storms around us! Notice, though, that Jesus was there to reassure the disciples, and He does the same for us. The disciples did not call out for Jesus, but He recognized their need and he met them in their moment of distress. He told them, “Do not be afraid.” Jesus calmed the winds and he brought peace to their hearts. We must have faith that Jesus watches over us as we cooperate with Him to do the work of our Heavenly Father.

Adult Initiation is a process for adults to become Catholic and intentional disciples of Jesus Christ. It is available to those who have not been baptized and those who were baptized in an-other Christian faith and wish to journey with their sponsors and our community to the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. Our sessions will begin on September 14th. If you are interested and want more information, please contact Deacon Pat.

Considering Becoming Catholic? This Wednesday we will be having our Back to School Open House. All our registered families should have received their back to school packet with your assigned time slot to come in, drop supplies off, and meet your teacher. We ask that only one parent attend with your child and masks/face coverings are required. Class lists will be posted outside of the school on Tuesday, Aug. 11th. If you did not receive your packet or your assigned time does not work please call Mary Lou in the office and reschedule. Our Used Uniform sale is going on now in the school foyer and will be available for sales after the weekend Masses this weekend. Blessings! Mr. Manning

St. Michael Cemetery is pleased to have the Legion of Mary take the lead on renewing our Walk-ing Rosary tradition.
