Today’s celebration of the Feast of Pentecost

concludes the Easter season. Pentecost celebrates

the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles

gathered in the upper room in Jerusalem; this

event also marks the beginning of the Church (we

wish our Church a Happy Birthday!). The story of

Pentecost can be found in today’s first reading from the

Acts of the Apostles.

The account in today’s Gospel from John 20:19-23

recounts how Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his

disciples. Yet the event in John’s Gospel takes place on

Easter Sunday, which we celebrated 50 days ago. There

is no need to try to reconcile these two accounts, but to

know that after his death, Jesus fulfilled his promise to

send to his disciples a helper, an Advocate (or

Paraclete), who would enable them to be his witnesses

throughout the world.

In the context of today’s feast of Pentecost, John

reminds us about the integral connection between the

gifts of peace and forgiveness and the action of the

Holy Spirit. Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of

peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue

the work that he has begun: “As the Father has sent me,

so I send you.” He breathes the Holy Spirit upon the

disciples and sends them to continue his work of

reconciliation through the forgiveness of sins. Jesus’ act

of breathing the Holy Spirit upon the apostles mirrors

God’s act of breathing life into Adam. In fact, both the

Greek and Hebrew words for “spirit” can also be

translated as “breath.” This Gospel reminds us that the

Church is called to be a reconciling presence in the

world. The reconciling presence of Christ is celebrated in

the Church’s sacramental life. In the Sacrament of

Baptism, we are cleansed of sin and become a new

creation in Christ. In the Sacrament of Penance, the

Church celebrates the mercy of God through the

forgiveness of sins. This reconciling presence is also to

be a way of life for Christians. In situations of conflict,

we are to be agents of peace and harmony among

people.

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam, Fr. Greg

Pentecost Sunday John 15:26-27; 16:12-15 or John 20:19-23 Acting with Courage

Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the

Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability. (Acts 2: 3-4)

Living the Word: The Holy Spirit can be a difficult concept for children to under-

stand. Wind is often used to describe the Holy Spirit. We know that wind can be pow-

erful and move things, and it can be a gentle presence moving the grass, branches, and

flowers.

A pinwheel is a helpful way for children to understand the power of wind and to think

about the Holy Spirit. You can either buy pinwheels or have your children make their

own. Make sure you use red streamers to decorate them. Red is a color associated with

the Holy Spirit. After putting the pinwheels together, put them outside in the ground or by an open window on a windy

day to remind them of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

And don’t forget to have a birthday party for our Church!

Questions of the Week

Child: When and where do you need the Holy Spirit’s help to speak out?

Adult: When has the Holy Spirit given you the strength to act with courage?

Fun Facts for Catholic Kids: On May 25th, we celebrate the Feast of 3 Saints! St. Bede the Venerable, St. Gregory VII

who was a Pope, and St. Mary Magdalene of Pazzi. Wow, perhaps you can look each one of them up and learn some-

thing about them. But I am going to focus on St. Bede today.

He was a monk and was the first one to use the words Anno Domini or A.D. to date events. He was given the title

“Venerable” to honor his wisdom and learning but his favorite prayer was a simple one. Maybe you know it. If you don’t,

maybe you’d like to memorize it: “Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the begin-

ning, is now, and will be forever. Amen”.

Congratulations to all of our youth who were recently confirmed! May the Holy

Vacation Bible School: Set Sail with St. Patrick and the Holy Trinity! Many of you have been asking or wondering about Vacation Bible School (VBS) this year! We’re excited

to announce that this summer, we are hosting a virtual VBS on St. Patrick and the Holy Trinity! Here is

how it would work: We are asking families to register and pay a small fee ($20 - $25) to cover the cost

of the home kits, which would include a book, CD, and craft materials for each child. You would come

by the church to pick up the kits. You will also receive links to watch prepared videos for each day! Additionally, VBS will

not be limited to one week this year! Since it is virtual, families can participate at any point during the summer! Right

now, if you are interested, please email Anne Doyle, so she knows how many of our families would like to take part in

our virtual VBS. You can reach her at [email protected]. We would also like for you to take pictures or videos of

your child or children doing the activities, so we can post it on our Facebook page and website! So our question for

you is: Who wants to set sail with St. Patrick and the Holy Trinity this summer?

Carolina Catholic Speaks with Author Kevin Wells For our second show in May, our guest is Kevin Wells, a Catholic author, whose newest book from Ignatius Press is

called, "Priest and Beggar: The Heroic Life of Venerable Aloysius Schwartz." Father Al heard the call of the Virgin of the

Poor to serve the poor of the world, and in his work in South Korea, the Philippines, and Central America, Father Al built

17 Boystowns and Girlstowns that service, to this day, the poor giving children a home, an education, and a deep and

abiding love of the Catholic faith.

This beautiful show will air on Wilmington Catholic Radio on stations 91.7 FM, 93.1 FM, and 103.1 FM in Wilmington the

third and fourth weekends of May, Saturdays at 11 a.m. and Sundays at 6 p.m. That's Saturday, May 15th and 22nd, at 11

a.m. and Sunday, May 16th and 23rd, at 6 p.m. This show can also be heard via live-stream on our website at

www.wilmingtoncatholicradio.com, by clicking on the "Listen Now" tab, and we thank you for your prayers and support

of Catholic radio.
