That appears to be one of the tenta- tive conclusions from the first set of unofficial UK radio ratings to be pub- lished by Nuremberg -based research organisation GfK Media, using the Radiocontrol electronic watch system it has developed. Utilising the system, Gfk has been providing official ratings for the Swiss radio market since January 2001. The company was commissioned .to undertake an ongoing survey of listening habits in the UK market by The Wireless Group (TWG), whose portfolio of stations includes national AM sports station Talk Sport. TWG's chairman Kelvin MacKenzie has long claimed that the UK's official diary -based RAJAR ratings survey under -reports listening to speech stations such Talk Sport. The first results of GfK's survey cover a six -week period from March 10 to April 20, during which time just under 1,000 adult respondents took part. The survey records all radio listening, unlike the RAJAR survey which only asks partici- pants to record listening periods of more than five minutes in duration. Unlike RAJAR, however, there is no figure pro- vided by GfK for time spent listening, seen as crucial for advertisers. In its quarterly results, RAJAR publishes both a weekly reach figure for stations, and a share of listening figure which takes into account the amount of time a listener spends with each station. That appears to be one of the tenta-tive conclusions from the first set ofunofficial UK radio ratings to be pub-lished by Nuremberg -based researchorganisation GfK Media, using theRadiocontrol electronic watch system ithas developed.

In our May 24 issue, this magazine ran a story about a cou-ple of big -name presenter signings, and a new marketingcampaign, at national Dutch AC/Gold station Radio 10 FM.Yet, incredibly, just two weeks later that station-a Dutchcommercial radio pioneer which in various guises has beenon the air for 15 years and which enjoys a solid base of lis-teners-has been consigned to the dustbin of history insurely the harshest, most dramatic licence award processever seen in the history of European radio.

The Dutch government's messy mixture of program-ming/financial criteria combined with a cash auctionprocess for the award of radio frequencies (see story, frontpage) has spelt the end of the road for Radio 10 FM, whilelisteners to the other terrestrial Dutch stations (both localand national) that did win their licences back are facedwith the confusion of having to retune to different fre-quencies to find their favourite station again.

While some other stations around Europe have in thepast lost their broadcast licences (such as LBC/London,Liberty Radio/London and Radio Victory/Portsmouth inthe UK, and just recently national station P4 in Norway),those stations were at least given the time (in most cases ayear) to depart the airwaves with some dignity and toappeal against their licence loss.

Radio 10 FM listeners are understandably very angryat the sudden termination of their favourite radio station-

Radio 10 says it has received over 70,000 e -mails since thenews of its demise was announced, listeners have beenphoning up the station in tears, and truckers even stageda co-ordinated sounding of their horns up and down thecountry's highways last week in protest.

It just goes to prove-if proof were ever needed-thatthere is certainly no easy or pain -free way of allocatingscarce radio frequencies, whether it be through systemslike the UK where unelected (and, some claim, unac-countable) officials professionally judge in great detail therespective merits of various licence applications, or theother extreme of Sweden, where-until recently-commer-cial radio frequencies simply went to the highest cash bid-der. Witness also the current troubles across the Dutchborder in Flanders, where the Flemish government hasstripped media authority the VCM of its power to awardnew licences following a huge storm there over the VCM'saward of the first Flanders -wide commercial licences to QMusic and 4FM in 2001.

Returning to the situation in the Netherlands, onealso has to question the sums of money being paid to theDutch treasury by the winners of theeight -year terrestrial FM licences-will, for example, Noordzee FM (ironi-cally Radio 10's sister station) reallybe able to make a profit when it iscommitted to paying a staggering 80million euros to the government overthe next eight years for the privilege ofits frequencies? Just imagine the pres-sure the programme director's going tobe under...

MADRID - The battlefield betweenlegal and illegal digital music hasmoved to Spain with the launch of Pure -tunes, a new online serviceoffering unrestricted accessto music that record compa-nies insist is unauthorised. -

Launched on May 20,Madrid -based Puretunesclaims to have a located aloophole in Spain's copy-right law that allows it tocompensate artists, song-writers and producers with-out requiring the labels' per-mission.

The company declines to state thetotal number of tracks available via itsservice, but says it is distributing thelatest releases from several major inter-national artists such as Madonna.Moreover, its repertoire includes musicfrom the Beatles, which to date neither

the band or its label EMI has madeavailable for legal digital sale.

Puretunes' subscription -based modeloffers prices that range from US$3.99for every eight hours spent download-

ing, through $24.99 permonth, or $167.88 per year.

Javier Siguenza, a part-ner at Spanish law firmSiguenza & Vila -Coro andPuretunes' legal representa-tive, says: "Puretunes haspioneered a product thatallows consumers to get themusic they want digitally,without restriction, whilecompensating the rightsholders for their works."

He adds that the service has theappropriate copyright licences fromSGAE, the Spanish authors' society, andAIE (the Association of Artists, Perform-ers and Players).

International distribution will be viaaffiliates, which currently include peer -

to -peer (P2P) file -sharing operatorssuch as US -based Grokster, which wasrecently declared to be a legal service bythe US courts following a lawsuit filedby the Recording Industry Associationof America.

Grokster's president Wayne Rosso(pictured) explains: "We bundle the soft-ware with Grokster, just as we do withall kinds of software. When you go toGrokster, a window will pop up offeringPuretunes but giving you the choice toopt out."

P2P affiliates receive a commissionof about 15% of the price for every cus-tomer introduced to the service.

But IFPI chairman/CEO JayBerman questions Puretunes' claim tobe offering authorised music. "There'sno loophole in the Spanish [copyright]law," he says. "A licence from theauthors' society doesn't give you theright to distribute the recording. All thelegal decisions so far [in Spain] haveconfirmed our rights."

No Renaissance for Ministry of Soundby Adam Howorth

LONDON - Changes continue apace atLondon -based dance empire Ministry ofSound (MoS) with the news that itsindependent label Ministry of SoundRecordings has ended its three-yearrelationship with Renaissance Record-ings.

MoS Recordings provided Renais-sance with sales and marketingresources as well as international dis-tribution for its club compilations andsingles. Renaissance has yet to confirmthe distributor of its next compilation,The Sound of Renaissance Vol. 2, which

had been slated for a June 23 release.Lohan Presenter, managing director

of MoS Recordings, says of Renaissance:"It's been a dormant label for about ayear and they wanted to go off and dosomething different, but it's been threeyears of good, profitable business."

Renaissance founder Geoff Oakesclaims the split was a mutual decision."We both decided that this is the righttime to end what has been a very suc-cessful joint venture," he says. "TheMinistry of Sound have been terrificpartners, and their vast experiencehelped establish Renaissance Record-ings as a global force in dance music.

Ministry have been invaluable in build-ing a strong platform to grow ourrecordings business, and we will con-tinue to work with them on a number oflevels in the future."

The split with Renaissance followsthe closure at the start of May of UKurban label Relentless Records, whichwas co -owned by Ministry of SoundRecordings. The past six months haveseen job losses at MoS offices aroundthe world, and in March companyfounder James Palumbo took a backseat from the day-to-day running ofthe operation, becoming part-timechairman.

COPENHAGEN - Eik Fred-eriksen (pictured) has beenpromoted to head of program-ming at public broadcasterDanmarks Radio (DR)'s CHRstation P3 as part of areorgnisation which will see arelaunch of the network onSeptember 1, and the consoli-dation of all P3's program-ming planning into a singledepartment for the first time.

Frederiksen, until nowP3's editor of music program-ming, will report to P3 pro-gramme director Lars Vester-lykke. In his new role, Fred-eriksen will continue to over-see P3's music, although hewill no longer be responsiblefor the music output of DR'sregional full -service networkP4. A new music director forP4 is expected to be named in

the near future.Meanwhile, Dorte Carlsen,

formerly production managerfor DR's news and entertain-ment department, will beresponsible for all productionplanning at P3, while P3

news and sports editor Hen-rik Heide has been promotedto news/sport editor for all ofDR's national stations.

The moves towards a morecentralised P3 operation havebeen undertaken to bolster

the station's competitivenessahead of the Danish cultureministry's auctioning off twoFM frequencies in early sum-mer, with the winning sta-tions likely to go on the air inthe autumn. One of the FMfrequencies will have coun-try -wide coverage, and theother near -national coverage.

"We're taking the upcom-ing competition seriously,"says Frederiksen, who wasformerly music director atcommercial CHR station TheVoice/Copenhagen. "Rightnow we will be using the time[before the new commercialstations launch] to re-evalu-ate everything about P3-presenters, programmes;everything is up for discus-sion. It'll be a new P3, with astrong music profile and focuson presenters, and new pro-grammes are highly likely."

LONDON - EMI hasstrengthened its globalRecorded Music marketingteam, forming three divi-sions: core frontline market-ing; catalogue and commer-cial marketing; and DVD.

The aim of the new struc-ture is to act as a catalyst forglobal marketing efforts andas a service centre for EMI'saffiliates around the world.The global marketing divisionwas established one year agounder senior VPs Mark Collen(pictured) and Matthieu Lau -riot -Prevost, with Collenoverseeing marketing forEMI's Capitol Music stream,and Lauriot-Prevost doing thesame for the Virgin Musicstream.

Says Laurent -Prevost:"Now, the minute a record is apriority somewhere in theworld, we are expecting everyterritory to give it a fair shot.

If they are going to be suc-cessful or not is a differentstory, but we don't want tohear people saying that arecord won't work in their ter-ritory any more."

Explains Collen: "We're nothere to dictate: we're here tohelp guide and direct and getresults for [our companies]and help get them things thatthey need-artists, tools,strategy or whatever."

The frontline marketingteam has been realigned tocover key releases and newartists worldwide. SusieSmith, director of global mar-

For the first time, EMI willhave a central unit, EMI Mar-keting, overseeing commercialand catalogue business aroundthe world. EMI Marketing isheaded by VP of catalogueMike Heatley, and by HoraceMcDonald, VP of commercialmarketing. Heatley was for-merly VP of catalogue market-ing for EMI Recorded MusicUK's international depart-ment; McDonald was VP ofcommercial marketing for EMIRecorded Music ContinentalEurope. ON THE BEATGERMAN MUSIC MARKET FALLS ANOTHER 26%

BERLIN - The volume of the Ger-man record market for the first threemonths of 2003 shrank by 26% com-pared to the same period last year.The figures were revealed by BMGGSA president Thomas Stein,addressing the company's annualsales and marketing meeting lastweek in Munich. He warned that

"the rate of contraction is picking up." German labels'body the BPW only officially reports figures for theterritory on an annual basis.

FLEMISH GOVERNMENT APPROVES RADIO PLAN

BRUSSELS - The Flemish Government has finallyapproved its radio frequency plan for north Belgium,following last October's legislation paving the way forlarger -scale regional commercial radio in Flanders.The new frequency plan will maximise the availablespace on the FM dial, will optimise the power of fre-quencies and will implement new technology to avoidinterference with neighbouring frequencies. Alongsidethe two existing "national" Flemish commercial sta-tions, Q -Music and 4FM, the plan provides for oneregional station per province, and 300 local stations.The criteria for the nine-year licence awards is cur-rently being fine-tuned.

COPENHAGEN - Denmark's culture minister BrianMikkelsen says that a number of local radio stations inthe country will be able to boost their transmissionpower to 500 W from the current limit of 160 W. What next for radio's brand of Gold?Gold stations in Europe have traditionally showcasedmusic from the birth of rock 'n' roll to the "sensational"'70s, with a strong emphasis on '60s repertoire. But astheir audiences grow older, they are facing thedilemma of whether to update the Gold concept bymoving their music into the '80s and '90s, or stick firm-ly to the classic original proposition. Our Gold FormatClinic looks at two stations in the UK and Sweden withcontrasting approaches, and also talks exclusively toChristophe Sabot about why he took France's RFM outof the format altogether. You know the name

Gold radio may conjureup Happy Days -styleimages of '50s dinerswith Elvis blaring froma Wurlitzer jukebox or

elderly disc jockeys dressed in goldlame jackets, but, as Bob Dylan oncesang on that Gold -friendly classic,"the times they are a changin'." Or atleast in some quarters.

London AM station Capital Gold-which in recent years has branchedout to become a quasi -national net-work with a presence in other majorUK cities such as Birmingham,Manchester and Cardiff-was oncethe personification of the US -style"oldies" format. Launched in 1988,the big golden jukebox featured on itslogo transported listeners back intime with the hits of the '50s, '60s and'70s, and sported a DJ line-up basedheavily on that deployed by nationalpublic CHR station BBC Radio 1 adecade or so previously.

These days at Capital Gold, it's allrather different. There's a slick, newcontemporary logo, DJs who are moreassociated with the '80s than the '60s(and who probably wouldn't be seendead wearing gold lame jackets!), and

a music policy that now spans 50years, from the late '50s right throughto today.

"We've changed an awful lot in thelast couple of years," admits CapitalGold programme director AndyTurner. "We play a much wider rangeof music, and we're not just a '50s and'60s type of oldies station-we'remuch more like a [AC/Gold] ClassicHits format."

Inevitably, as with most program-ming decisions made in commercialradio, Capital Gold's change of formathas been driven largely by advertis-

ing considerations. Through bringing'80s songs and even some '90s musicinto the mix, the network's targetdemographic has been lowered to 35 -plus in order to please the advertiserswho, says Turner, are still reluctantto spend big money on advertising tothe so-called "grey" market.

Product mis-placement?"So many products see themselves as15-24 products, when they're not par-ticularly," he laments. "They see thatas the sexy side of their brandimage-companies like [supermarketchain] Sainsburys and BritishAirways, they all spend their moneyon our younger FM station [CapitalFM]. I'd love to see them spend theirmoney on our station, because I thinkour audiences are the very people whoactually use those products."

The problem isn't just with the adbuyers, either. Turner says that radiosales teams are "often young anddon't have the appreciation of theGold format, or see it as passionatelyas the people who work within theformat. They don't see the opportuni-ties and the potential that we do."

According to official RAJAR audi-ence figures, the average age ofCapital's Gold current audience is 41,reports Turner, although he admits"my hunch is that we're more like a45 -year -old station. But two years agoI'd have said we were a 50 -plus sta-tion, so we are bringing our demo-graphics down."

Now that Capital Gold no longerrestricts itself to the '50s, '60s and'70s, Turner. says the music on thestation no longer has "a start and anend", and has ceased to be era -basedaltogether. "It doesn't matter when asong was a hit," explains Turner. "Thephilosophy is that each song we play

should have ameaning for someone that is relevantto today. That allows us to play any-thing from Elvis in '56 to even newmusic from core artists."

Turner admits that Capital Gold"used to get to hung up on eras. Butjust because you're 50 years old itdoesn't mean you're only into '60smusic. Yes, there will be songs fromwhichever era you come from thatwill be evocative to you, but some-thing like Houndog is a great piece ofrock n roll-you can be 15 and loveHoundog, just as you can be 55 andlove Oasis. Each individual song weplay should be a great song today forthe majority of our audience."

Good-time oldiesIn addition to a song's ability to berelevant to a modern audience, thereare also significant tempo considera-tions for Capital Gold. "We decided,particularly in the London market,that there was probably a position forus for being a reasonably uptempo,lively station," says Turner. "We playa fair amount of ballads, but being amedium wave broadcaster I think wesound better when we have a bit of`oomph' and attitude. The verydynamics of a more modern balladjust don't cut as well on medium waveas well as a bit of '60s rock 'n' roll orMerseybeat. Equally, there are manygreat '80s and '90s songs whose roots

are based in the '60s pop sound thatcut beautifully on medium wave."

Capital Gold's playlist featuresaround 2,000 songs-three years ago,under the programming regime ofex -Capital group programmedirector Richard Park, it hadbeen whittled down to less than500. The hottest rotation levelat the station is now one spinper day.

"Having variety is importantfor long-term [market] share,"argues Turner, "although when wefirst tightened up the playlist a fewyears ago, we did score better reachfigures. But yes, they subsequentlywent down-so did the novelty wearoff? It's a real chicken and egg situa-tion. But as a programmer I think wesound better playing a wide variety ofmusic-we've got nearly 50 years ofmusic to choose from, so we should beable to find a few good songs!"

Artist as driverCapital Gold's playlist breaks downas approximately 40% '60s, 40% '70s,and 15% '80s/90s. There's also cur-rently an experimental 5% category ofnew songs from the station's coreartists such as Elton John, FleetwoodMac and Meatloaf. In order not tomuddy the Gold proposition too muchat this stage, these tracks are givenspecial spot plays via features such asAlbum of the Week, Rated andRecommended, and Latest andGreatest.

"I think the Gold format does haveroom to play new music from coreartists," says Turner. "We're usingthis as a test and an introduction, butin the slightly longer term I'd like tointroduce a small playlist of newmusic to the station. With many ofthese artists, their new material isn'tgetting airtime-who else is featuringthe new Fleetwood Mac or the newMeatloaf album? These are legendaryartists who aren't getting any expo-sure [in the UK market]."

The decision of Capital Gold toplaylist contemporary songs from itscore artists also reflects the degree towhich the station is artist -driven.

Capital Gold's latest London taxi campaign, which runs for six monthsfrom this June. The station says the campaign, which was created in-house, aims to communicate Capital Gold's "unique music positioning".

While for most contemporary stationsthese days the sound and tempo of arecord is everything (no matter whothe artist is), Turner believes thatCapital Gold should be showcasingthe entire back -catalogues of artistslike Rod Stewart, Elton John, DianaRoss, Sting, Stevie Wonder, EricClapton, Tina Turner, Fleetwood Macand Bruce Springsteen, includingsome of their most contemporaryworks. "We'll play a Tina Turner orSting track and I'm really not both-ered what year it comes from-it'smore about the artist," he confirms.

plete anathema, however, to LG(Lars-Goran) Nilsson, the presidentand programme director of BonnierRadio's Vinyl 107 in Stockholm.Launched in 1993, for the past coupleof years the station has enjoyed a par-ticularly steady audience, and cur-rently has a daily reach of 5.3% (or84,000 adults) in the Stockholm area.

Nilsson came to Bonnier Radio in1993, and in May 1997 he moved overto Vinyl from AC network MixMegapol. One of the first initiativeshe took at Vinyl was to review the sta-tion's music database and to focuseven more tightly on the Gold for-mat's core '60s decade.

"There were some '70s and '80stitles at that point, but we clearedthem out in favour of more '50s and'60s music," he recalls. "Most of themusic is from 1959 to 1969, and theoldest title in our archives is from1952-Lawdy Miss Clawdy withLloyd Price."

Lost identityNilsson believes that Gold stations"lose their identity" when they startadding music from later musical eras,and he also notes a significant gener-ational divide at either end of Gold'straditional audience demographic,which explains his decision to focusmore on the '50s and '60s and less onthe '70s and beyond. "Those who likethe earlier music we play, from thepre -Beatles era in the late '50s andearly '60s, don't generally approve ofacts like the Eagles, Steely Dan orDoobie Brothers from the '70s, andthe same goes the other way around,"he notes.

"Mixing these styles would give a

music repertoire that isn't compatibleand would make it harder to get aloyal audience. That's why we aim tobe so consistent. While we play

music from 1952 to 1976, the titleswe pick from the latter years arevery carefully chosen."

A normal hour at Vinyl 107includes one or two '50s songsand two to three from the '70s,

with the rest coming from the'60s. Even when playing '70s

material, however, Vinyl 107 tries tolook for those '60s -sounding songs."We play Simon & Garfunkel's '70smaterial and we also include '70stitles from John Denver and NeilDiamond," says Nilsson. "Althoughthese are '70s releases, they have asound that fits our format. At thesame time, some '60s artists-like Sly& The Family Stone and JimiHendrix-fall outside our music for-mat."

There have been a few instanceswhen Vinyl 107 has played newreleases. But it happens only sparing-ly-such as when there was the brandnew Beatles single (Free As A Bird) orwhen Paul McCartney played inStockholm recently. When the JunkieXL remix of Elvis Presley's A LittleLess Conversation became a hit in2002, Vinyl 107 started playing theoriginal. Says Nilsson: "It was really arather obscure Elvis track and it was-n't even on our music database, whichincludes 150 Elvis titles. For a while,we had it on high rotation and wekept it on rotation for half a year. Itwas the right artist and a fun song."

Constant updatingMost of Vinyl's music output isplaylisted, with heavy rotation titlescoming round once every 29 hours."We're always adding new records toour playlist and we now have about3,500 songs in our music database,with 700 songs on our playlist at anyone given time," says Nilsson. "We'reconstantly updating the databasewith remastered versions, and we aimto come as close to the original feel ofthe music as we can.

"We don't rotate them all the time,and every day we also play music thatisn't on the playlist. For example, thisday in 1985 Rick Nelson died, so weare playing 10 rarer songs from him,including B-sides. We also try to digdeeper in the archives and feature asong with a special story behind itevery hour."

Vinyl 107 uses the services of bothColeman Research-which also hassister station Mix Megapol as a cus-tomer-as well as specialist radioconsultant Ted McAllister, who worksfor several US Gold stations. The sta-tion also undertakes some of its ownmusic research. "It's interesting to fol-low the results," says Nilsson."Essentially, there are two mainartists, Elvis and The Beatles.Sometimes Elvis and similar music ismore popular and another yearBeatles and '60s pop is bigger."

Why Sabot departedthe Gold standardAs the creator of NRJ's highly -successful Gold network Nostalagie,Christophe Sabot is one of the executives most identified with theGold format in France. However, upon talking control of Goldnetwork RFM in his new capacity as MD of Legardere Active's FMnetworks, Sabot switched the station away from Gold to Soft AC.LISA PASOLD found out why, and asked him for his current viewson Gold

nWhy did you move RFM away114( from Gold into Soft AC?

AWe moved RFM for the simplestpossible reason: when I look at

radio networks in France, unlikewhat some people might look at,what I examine is their [population]coverage. RFM has far smaller cov-erage than Nostalgie. Their namealone defines the product. There'sno point in continuing in a formatwhere a competitor has such anedge! Also, we had Europe 2 whichwas changing formats [from AC toCHR]. We were faced with [Soft AC]Cherie FM and Nostalgie, and torespond to them we needed to havetwo stations that weren't very farapart. Initially, Europe 2 and RFMwere extremely far apart!So I moved each of thema little bit.

nHow has the musicMIllchanged under thenew format?A RFM is now a unisex^ station, for a man orwoman who built theirmusical culture in the'70s, growing up, andnow they're about 35years old. For the newformat, we did researchinto specifically thesepeople, whereas the typi-cal Gold station listenerhad a different character. When Istarted Nostalgie, there was nopurely Gold format in France, whichmade our success immediate. Wewere able to use a larger range oftitles for Gold here than in the US,including music from the '50s, '60s,and '70s, because of the [gaps in the]French market. Before we startedNostalgie, this kind of music couldonly be heard as the occasional tuneon a full -service station. The listen-er had nowhere to hear what hewanted, unless he listened at hometo his own albums.

nAside from the music, whatNINother things did you change atRFM when the format altered?

AI had to create a new traditionfor RFM that would become

recognisable. I had to find elementsthat would become totemic. Some [ofRFM's former listeners] have stayedwith us, because they felt they werepoorly served elsewhere, and whilewe had a six to eight month periodof ratings stagnation during our[new listener] recruitment phase,we've emerged really well. Nowwe're conquering new listeners. To

change, we needed to be clear, tocommunicate what we were doing,to be very clear that, yes, the formathas changed but it offers somethingnew, a complement to, what theywere used to.

QYou have successfully runGold -formatted stations in the

past, such as Nostalgie. Do youthink Gold radio can still besuccessful?

AI personally really like the Goldformat. I think to be successful,

Gold has to exploit its mandatefully. In this format, you have to bemusically conservative, you have toconsistent, and you can't quit. Youhave to take the format absolutely

to the limit.

QFor all -Goldstations like

Nostalgie, what doyou think themusical cut-offpoint should be?Can '90s music beplayed on a Goldstation, or do youthink they stillhave to focusmainly onrepertoire from the'60s and '70s?A No, you should

^absolutely notplay '80s or '90s music. It's a com-pletely different thing, because yourformat shifts out of Gold andbecomes AC/Gold. Either you havean AC station and you actually playnew music, and you take some risks,or you don't play anything laterthan the late-ish 1970s, and you area consistent Gold station.

(NWhat devices can programmersuse to keep Gold stations

sounding fresh?AI think Gold will graduallyevolve, and will become younger

as its current demographic ages. Wemight even end up with a new Goldformat, looking ahead to a futuretime when the baby -boomers aredead. You could still have the Goldformat, but more as a vintage, leg-endary format, versus a more con-temporary Gold of the '70s and '80s.We'll end up playing Blondie onGold. Music is generational. Rightnow, Paul McCartney and theRolling Stones are still touring.Admittedly, Elvis is dead, but whenthe other guys stop touring, theirmusic will gradually become a kindof vintage rock.

While Capital Gold and Vinyl 107may take different approaches totheir music output, Turner andNilsson are both in agreement thatthe presentation tone on their respec-tive stations must be kept contempo-rary.

"Capital Gold used to live in a timewarp-we'd only talk about the '60s,because that's where the music camefrom," recalls Turner. "But our audi-ence likes to hear [current] showbizgossip and entertainment-they allknow who Robbie Williams is, forexample, so we might carry an item

cial feeling for the station. I neverhave to remind the presenters to sayour positioning slogan, for example,because it comes naturally for them."

Both Gold programmers expressfrustration that their stations do notappear to be major priorities for theirparent companies when it comes tomarketing expenditure. "We have hadgreat success, despite a minimalamount of marketing," says Nilsson.

Marketing initiatives"We would like to have both televisionads and full -page newspaper ads, butwe only do a few campaigns a year.Usually, we have a few newspaperadverts in the Stockholm City andExpressen [newspapers] for our Top500 listeners' poll to get new listen-ers." station, and we don't claim that thingswere better in the past. We always tryto be contemporary and couple themusic with what's happening now. Wealso have a strong local presence-peo-ple living in Stockholm should feelthat this is their own station."

Gold not necessarily oldTurner, whose youngest presenter is28 -year -old Dean Martin, believesthat you don't necessarily have to beold to broadcast on the Gold format."When Capital Gold started it wasbased on heritage presenters [fromthe '60s]. But many of those guyshaven't survived the test of time, andwe needed to move on. We're nowdoing a similar thing with more mod-ern heritage presenters from the'80s-David Jensen, Mike Sweeney,Greg Edwards, Mick Brown. Ifthey've got a name it does help you,but they have to have the right kindof name-not a cheesy, negative per-ception. They need music credibilitywith their audiences, and they haveto have a good music knowledge-ifwe're going to play 50 years of musicwe need to be able to talk about itwith some authority! Equally, I'm alsolooking for personality, someone withsomething to say."

As with the station's music policy,Nilsson believes that the consistencyand unchanging nature of Vinyl's pre-sentation team has been a major fac-tor its success. "One of the reasonsthat we're successful is the fact thatwe've figured out what works andhave kept on doing those things," hesuggests. "The most important thingis to get the employees to stay here.We've had the same people for sever-al years and haven't changed presen-ters. Together, we've become better ateverything we do and I don't want tochange it. It's all about creating a spe-

As well as reinventing the sound ofthe station, Capital Gold has beenbusy updating its marketing in thepast couple of years, with a brandnew logo. "We needed to change theperception with lapsed listeners andnon -listeners about what the brandvalues are," says Turner. "Wechanged the logo from a jukebox-which was great at the time but hor-ribly cheesy in the modern era-to ageneric logo which people have readdifferent things into."

Capital Gold's ratings have beenon a downward slope in recent times,with the network averaging a 2.6%share of listening in the first quarterof 2003 (a year ago in the same quar-ter, it was 3.2%). "I think all Gold sta-tions are having to rediscover them-selves and reinvent themselves fromwhere they were five or 10 years ago,"says Turner. "If they don't, the audi-ence will get older and die off."

Turner, 44, notes a significant dif-ference between his generation andthe 40 -year -olds of 10 or 20 years ago."I've grown up with computers, CDs,pro -logic decoders, and widescreenTV-that's a very different exposurethan someone 10 years older than me,so I think you have to reflect that andmove with the times," he says.

"When my parents were 40, theyseemed very old. But a 40 -year -oldtoday thinks they're 30 years old,attitudinally. We have more money inour pockets, and our whole lifestylevalues are completely different fromour parents who were the postwargeneration. That's why the Gold for-mat needs to reinvent itself. Houndogby Elvis or anything by the Beatleswill always be an absolute classicsong-but you need to do other thingsas well."

Leading the wayItalian jazz itself came into its own inthe 1970s, with players like trum-peter Enrico Rava, bassist GiovanniTomasso, pianists Giorgio Gaslini andFranco D'Andrea, reedman GianluigiTrovesi and drummer Aldo Romano,all still active and at the forefront ofthe current European scene.

Even so, most in the Italianjazz industry are optimistic, and pointto several factors on the domesticfront to back up their optimism,including an evolving live scene andan increased level of musicianship.

"Five or six years ago the scene wasmonopolised by the avant-garde andEuropean free jazz," says SergioVeschi, MD of Red Records. "Now thereare many more musicians with manydifferent styles, and many of them arepopular outside of Italy as well."Although best known abroad for docu-menting American players like BobbyWatson, Cedar Walton, SteveGrossman and Jerry Bergonzi, Red hascut its release schedule and turned itsfocus toward the domestic market."Local independent distributors arehaving a hard time," Veschi reflects,"and the over -production of CDs makesit very difficult to sell. At the sametime, it's easier to sell Italian jazz nowbecause standards are really good."

confines of the big cities. He attribut-es this in part to the development ofthe retail sector, with many moreshops stocking jazz than in the past.

New releases may still be a priority,but Veschi insists it's just as importantto promote the catalogue, especiallysince many of the soloists that indiesrecord when they are unknown ulti-mately sign to major labels whose pro-motion and marketing campaigns givetheir earlier recordings new cachet.

Flavio Bonandrini, MD of IREC,which includes Soul Note, Black Saintand new label Dischi Della Quercia(DDQ), devoted to Italian acts, alsobelieves that the gap in qualitybetween Italian and American play-ers has closed. In the wake of DDQ'sacquisition by IREC from originalfounder Giorgio Gaslini, Italy hasbecome an important market for thecompany. Bonandrini's perspective isespecially informed, as he spent mostof the 90s living in New York."Looking at jazz over the last 10 or soyears, I would say that the develop-ment has been greater in Europe, andespecially in Italy," he affirms.

Promoter's prejudiceUnfortunately, promoters don't see itthat way. "Italians, like Europeanplayers in general, must still struggleagainst prejudices in favour ofAmerican players. The industryworks with only 10-15 big names."

Bonandrini stakes a claim forartist development: "In this industryyou have to invest in the talent andfollow up step by step. At the begin-ning you will always lose money, butin time you build the career of anartist, and by doing this with severalacts you reach a point where you havea steady presence in the market."

Though market conditions outsideItaly may have forced a certainretrenchment, and a steady evolutionof the sector inside the country mayhave favoured a domestic focus, inter-national sales are still an essentialpart of most labels' plans. "We're defi-nitely looking toward the internation-al market," declares Alfa Music A&Rdirector Fabrizio Salvatore. TheRome -based label, launched threeyears ago, began as a recording studioin 1990 and specialises in jazz and

world music. For the moment, distrib-ution in Japan and Korea must suf-fice, but Europe is on the agenda.

"In Italy, jazz comparesunfavourably with countries likeFrance or Holland," says Salvatore."Whereas opera, for instance, enjoys apopular following, jazz is still consid-ered music for an elite public. Themain problem is that people are noteducated about jazz. In my opinion,it's a matter of attitude and culture."

While stressing the difficulty of themarket, especially for a young label,Salvatore mentions the importance ofguest artists in attracting the atten-tion of both media and public. Onvocalist Susanna Stivali's upcoming ASecret Place, saxophonist RosarioGiuliani guests, while accordionistRichard Galliano sits in on the PJTrio's New Steps. Both artists well-known from their recordings forFrance's Dreyfus Jazz label.

Nicolosi Productions has taken theidea and run with it. A dozen Americanand European jazz superstars, includ-ing Stanley Jordan, Billy Cobham,Michael Brecker, Toots Thielemansand Billy Preston lend their touch toItalian pop band Novecento's albumNovecento Featuring... which blurs theborders between pop and jazz. TheNicolosi siblings-who are behind boththe band and the label-had alreadytested the waters last year withacclaimed CDs by Cobham andPreston. Says Lino Nicolosi: "To playwith Cobham was a dream we've hadsince we were children. After this, itwas clear the idea of joining togetherour pop roots and the great names ofjazz could be applied to the whole labelin order to reach a new audience. Nowwe are distributed in Spain, France,Holland, and Germany, and it seemsother countries are interesting in whatwe are proposing."

Perhaps the label which has donemost to shine a light on Italy's jazzscene is CAM Jazz, the offshoot of thecountry's principal soundtrack labeland publishing company. Launched in2000 as a way to exploit CAM's vastcatalogue by commissioning jazztreatments of classic film themes, thefirst effort, La Dolce Vita by theTommaso/Rava Quartet, became aninstant classic, winning Jazziz

Magazine's critics poll in 2001, andencouraging the label to invest whole-heartedly in jazz. The follow-up,Secondo Tempo, and albums bypianist Enrico Pieranunzi, RobertoGatto, and others, have confirmedItaly's privileged place inmodern jazz.

"The success of the labelhas definitely exceeded expec-tations, affirms CAM presi-dent Francesca Campi. "Wedon't mind going over budgetto achieve quality recordings.Italy is a big market for us,but Europe is huge, and moreimportant than the US,though we're in talks with a majorlabel that should bear fruit inSeptember. Initially we used our regu-lar distributors, but quickly realisedwe needed specialised distribution."

What little jazz there is on eitherpublic or commercial stationsremains a largely late -night affair.There is no jazz -formatted station inItaly, but local stations-exempt frompaying the steep by -the minute copy-

right fees levied on largerstations-are more apt toplay jazz in the daytime andare increasingly importantto the sector. Both RadioPopolare/Milan and RadioCitta Futura/Rome pro-gramme jazz.

The importance of publicstation RAI 3 for the genrecannot be exaggerated. Pino

Saulo produces several jazz pro-grammes, including "Radiotre SuiteJazz", consisting of live broadcastsfrom clubs, festivals and the RAI stu-dios, "Invenzioni", which featuresguest hosts playing records, and"Fonorama", which airs new releasesof jazz, soul, electronica and avant -pop. "In the last 10 years many youngmusicians have come up, and there's alot of variety on the scene now," saysSaulo. "There is not a single, predomi-nant style. You can find a lot of youngmusicians playing hard bop, but alsomany interested in avant-garde. Manymusicians are trying to find commonground between jazz and Mediterr-anean music. At the same time somepop singers are using jazz musicians,and jazz concerts and clubs are oftencrowded, so I would say that the pub-lic is more aware of jazz." .

New venueAnother clear indication of the grow-ing importance of Italy on the inter-national jazz circuit is the recentopening of the Blue Note club inMilan (pictured above) joining thefamily of emblematic jazz clubs inNew York and Japan. Though theprogramme will focus on internation-al artists, Monday nights arereserved for local talent. Radio MonteCarlo's Nick the Nightfly, presenter ofthe nightly "Monte Carlo Nights",which programmes ambient, smoothand ethnic jazz, will broadcast livefrom the club every Tuesday night.

Vito di Modugno's Organ Grooves (Red Records) is original and lively soul jazzwith a twist: it features the organist's father, a traditional accordionist fromsouthern Italy, making a rare incursion into jazz. Italy's answer to Zydeco masterClifton Chenier, Pino di Modugno adds a bluesy Mediterranean flavour to the syn-copated B3 workouts of his son, aided by an inspired Fabrizio Bosso on trumpet.

Namu, from Alfredo Impullitti (Black Saint), is a lyrical, inti-mate collection of original tunes by the pianist and MauroManzoni, who plays baritone, tenor and soprano saxes, as well asflute, laying down emotive lines atop Impullitti's rich, subtlepianism. The album serves as testament to a fine player, whounfortunately died soon after its completion.

Susanna Stivoli represents a new generation of Italian vocalist,honed as both a classical singer, and as a soloist with a gospelchoir while studying at the Berklee College of Music. Having sung with many of

the best Italian jazzers, on her first CD, A SecretPlace, (Alfa Music) she's lent a hand by no less thanRosario Giuliani.

Paolo Fresu's Scores! (CAM Jazz) offers a selec-tion of music the trumpeter composed for two films,L'Isola and Il Piu Crudele dei Giorni. Both featureatmospheric jazz with African and Arabic overtonesfeaturing Dhafer Youssef on oud, in a variety of

evocative settings for duet, quintet and string quartet, and discrete electronics.Fresu's invention is impressive, and the album plays like a multiple movementorchestral suite.

The same extraordinary crew that created the backing for NovecentoFeaturing also assisted at the sessions for thefunky Dreams of Peace from guitarist StanleyJordan (Nicolosi Productions). Pino, Lino andRossana Nicolosi provide a seething but civilisedbed of soulful grooves for Jordan's tasteful andunique style, while the likes of Guy Barker, DaveLiebman and Randy Brecker take their turns atthe helm.

Radiohead meet the media with Hail To The Thiefby Hamish Champ

There are a handful of acts around the worldfor whom putting out a new album is regardedby the record business, media and consumersalike as being an "event". Few would doubtthat the UK's Radiohead rank among them.

The band have not been resting on theirlaurels in recent years; after a 36 month hia-tus following 1997's OK Computer they put outtwo studio albums, Kid A and Amnesiac, inquick succession around the end of 2000/begin-ning of 2001, followed by a low-key release oflive recordings.

However, following a period when tradition-al marketing and promotion techniques wereanathema to the band-Kid 'A spawned no sin-gles or videos-the June 9 global release (June10 in the US) of the band's sixth studio album,Hail To The Thief (Parlophone/Capitol) is like-ly to be anything but understated.

Recorded in the act's hometown ofOxford in England and in Los Angeles, andmaintaining elements of the eclectic exper-imentation to be found on previousalbums, Hail To The Thief is being seen asa more "accessible" record than its immediatepredecessors, Kid A, which entered the USBillboard 200 album chart on its release atnumber one, and the follow up, Amnesiac.These records were seen as perhaps too chal-lenging for many of Radiohead's "traditional"fans.

"For the last five years Radiohead have beendogged by the phrase, 'Is it a return to form?' or, 'Isit back to songs?"' asks Joe Harland,, senior produc-er, evenings, at UK public CHR station BBC Radio

1. "I think the difficulty is that when they have toreturned to songs people haven't spotted it,[although] this album is more overtly melodic thanAmnesiac and Kid A. Tracks like Wolf At The Doorand Myxamatosis [from HTTT] are very strongRadiohead songs." The first single off the album,There There, released May 26, is currently B -listedat Radio 1.

Edge, part of the band's management team atCourtyard Management. "The `blipverts' forKid A were genuine attempts to react againstwhat Thom felt was an increasingly stalemedia. One has' to admit that if you're an intel-ligent adult turning on MTV is not the mostintellectually stimulating thing you can do."Ironically, the day before the album's releaseMTV UK will be broadcasting a Radiohead gigrecorded on May 24 at London's ShepherdBush Empire, part of a short UK and Irelandtour. The band then head off for a series ofsummer European festival dates, including aheadlining slot at Glastonbury in the UK, aswell as several radio and TV appearancesacross Europe. A UK stadium tour takes placelater this year, as will a series of large -venueEuropean dates.

"There's a huge ambition for Radioheadwithin the company," says Mike Allen, seniorVP international marketing, EMI RecordedMusic UK/Ireland. "There's equally an aware-ness that their two earlier studio albums soldfewer than they achieved previously [with OK

Computer, which has sold six million units world-wide, versus a combined total for Kid A andAmnesiac of seven million]. What bodes well for usis the. great reaction to the record and the plan,which sees the band out there, touring the recordand doing what they do best."

Radio l's Harland agrees. "You get the feelingthey've made a record they're genuinely proud of. Iknow they say that about every record but look,they're doing press and radio. Which makes my lifea helluva lot easier!"

Leyers' guide to perfect pop

"Jan Leyers clearly demonstratesthat he has the ability to write well -crafted pop songs. Almost a guide-book on how to write good pop songs."

That's what Dirk Blancke, head ofmusic at Flemish public full servicestation VRT Radio 1, thinks of JanLeyers' eponymously -titled solo album,released on Capitol/EMI on April 25.

Singer -songwriter Leyers firstachieved international success as co-founder, with Paul Michiels, ofBelgian band Soulsister, who notchedup hit singles such as The Way ToYour Heart, Through Before WeStarted and Tell Me What It Takes.Leyers also supplied material for TheRadio's and Clouseau. In 1995, That'sAs Close As I'll Get To Loving Youperformed by Aaron Tippin, a song

written by Leyers with PaulJefferson and Sally Dworsky, heldthe number on position on Billboard'sHot Country chart in the US forthree weeks. And in 1998, Leyersreleased an album, Exposed, with anew outfit My Velma. A true all-rounder, since then he has beenworking as a TV presenter and pro-ducer and as a member of the jury forthe Belgian Pop Idol TV show.

The self -produced album JanLeyers is being kick-started by thesingle Don't Make Me Miss You,which is currently causing ripples onlocal airwaves. Leyers has writtenand composed all of the 12 songs,some with David Werner andMichael Garvin.

"Jan Leyers is currently a top pri-ority for EMI," says Sam Sisk, localrepertoire product manager. "Andright now, we're negotiating the albumrelease in Holland and Germany. Hesucceeded in delivering a great albumwith strong songs."

"Each song on the album could be asingle in its own right," echoesBlancke. "And, whereas listening tothe whole album reveals the achieve-ment it is, the individual songs also fitwonderfully into radio." Blancke hasopted to programme songs like DirtyCups, All Summer Long and There'sWhy, rather than the current single.

"Those songs fit our format betterthan the single-but we are alsoplaying that," he says.

STEP 11The revival of techno, as heralded bythe Novamute compilation 2 CDs &MP3s (M&M, March 29), continuesapace with the release of two remix-es of Agoria's La Onzieme Marche(PIAS). The Phil Kieran mix con-tains everything that a good technotrack should; huge, dramatic drops,a swirling relentless groove and oneof the most sublime chordsequence/melodies of this year. Atruly moving piece of electronica thatseems destined to rip up dancefloorsthis summer.

Where Kieran's "version" is ruth-less in its melodic and rhythmicthrust, the cl remix is an altogethermore poised affair with a tech -housefeel. A good effort somewhat over-shadowed by the freshness ofKieran's mix.

CLASSIC MODEOn Right Stuff by L.C. Anderson vsPsycho Radio (Oxyd Records/Italy), ashimmering, '80s -inflected bass fig-ure, offers a clue as to what is tocome. Over the last two years, retropop has managed to refresh the morecommercial side of electronica in anumber of ways and Right Stufftakes that idea just that bit furtherby blending an undeniably '80s feelwith production values more usually

associated with house music. It alsohas a seriously catchy chorus.

A PAUSE IN THE ROUNDSince the release of his debut soloalbum Pause (Domino Records) in2001, Four Tet-a.k.a. Fridge gui-tarist Kieran Hebden-has proved tobe one of electro-acoustic music's mostgifted and inspired protagonists. Hisability to whip up a stunning melody,seemingly out of nowhere, and thenmutate it in unexpected ways has wonthe artist a legion of fans and a clutchof lucrative synchronisation place-ments in major advertising cam-paigns.

Now his second album Rounds(released worldwide May 5 onDomino), takes the idea of beingentertaining without being obviousone stage further. "A lot of electronicmusic just isn't very dangerous,"Hebden says. "But albums such asJim O'Rourke's I'm Happy And I'mSinging and some of Fennesz'srecent work prove that you can beexperimental without losing sight ofthe need for melody and structure."

Hebden will be performing live inthe UK in May and June followed byan appearance at the VeniceBiennale and a clutch of US dates."My background is in jazz and impro-visation, so the live shows are a bitmore electronic and hectic than therecords," he says.

debut album Get Rich Or Die Tryin, which hasalready been a big hit on Europe's airplay andsales charts. The powerful lyrics that 50 Centis known for are again in evidence on 21Questions, but are approached somewhatdifferently. Produced by Dirty Swift, the slowbeat, deep bass line, and rap veteran NateDogg's baritone vocals add a smooth melodicsound to the low-key hip hop track. UK Publicbroadcaster the BBC's national CHR station,Radio 1, is just one of the many stations acrossEurope playing this single. "21 Questions is thegreatest rap record out there," enthuses TimWestwood, who presents the station's weeklyrap show. "It's the smoother side of 50 Centand is classic hip hop for 2003. DANCE BEATThe weekly dance chart comment by Harald Roth

Room 5 feat. Oliver Cheatham's Make Luv(Noise Traxx) holds its position at number oneon the European Dance Traxx chart for a fifthconsecutive week.

The track has increased in support after lastweek's drop and is still the biggest -sellingrecord at specialist dance retail. It also debutsthis week on Spain's Deejay magazine chart.

However, at number two, despite slipping atdance retail, Satisfaction (Energy) by BennyBenassi also increases in overall support thisweek and remains the most -played track inEurope's clubs.

Meanwhile, there are other possible con-tenders for the next Dance Traxx number one.

No stranger to the top spot, Madonna is at anunchanged number three this week with herAmerican Life (Maverick). As things stand, sheneeds a 37% increase in support to reach thetop. That's certainly not out of the question, con-sidering her 20.4% increase on last week.

Other would-be chart -toppers are SaffronHill featuring Ben Onono with My Love IsAlways There (Illustrious). The track is thebiggest gainer at specialist dance retail, fuelledby debuts in the UK and Ireland.

Meanwhile, at number five this week (upfrom 17) is Justin Timberlake's Rock Your Body(Jive), which debuts on club charts in the UKand Germany. The track's gain is so huge as toqualify it for the week's biggest mover in termsof both sales and club -play. It's one of threetracks that move into the top 10 for the veryfirst time. The other two are Paul van Dyk feat.Hemstock & Jennings' Nobody But You(Vandit), which jumps four notches (from 12 toeight), and Groove Armada's Easy (Pepper -Jive), a 19 -to -10 mover.

One place lower, at number 17 (from 27), isCulture Beat's updated Mc. Vain (Abfahrt). It'salso making good progress, but is currentlyhandicapped by its GSA -only release.

Finally, one of the biggest climbers into thetop 40 is Bhangra Knights Vs. Husan's Husan(Positiva) as featured on the Peugeot 208 TVadvert. The track has rocketed from 50-23 basedon dance retail debuts in the UK and Ireland.

ON THE AIRM&M's weekly airplay analysis column

It's a constant jostle forthe top place on theEuropean Radio Top 50chart. Robbie Williamswas first overtaken byAvril Lavigne before re-asserting his position atthe top, and then byMadonna. Now he vaultsMadonna to once againrule the chart with ComeUndone (EMI).

Madonna's single American Life (Maverick) isthus relegated to number two this week, withLavigne chasing Madonna's tail at numberthree with I'm With You (Arista).

Andy Bailey is programme controller atlocal UK Hot AC radio station 107.2 Wire FM,which is based in Warrington, north westEngland. Bailey, who went to school withRobbie Williams, says the station is no longerplaying Come Undone. "We've had a bigRobbie shake-up," he says. "We're playing a lotof his older tracks."

American Life, too, has already become arecurrent track on the station. "We've alreadygiven Madonna's new single Hollywood a cou-ple of spins in the evening," says Bailey, "eventhough it's not released for a good while yet.But I think it's the best song off the album."

Further down the chart, Christina Aguileramakes a massive leap, from number 21 to num-ber eight with her new single Fighter (BMG).It's one of the nine tracks on Wire FM's A list.

The station isn't playing Jennifer Lopez'snew track I'm Glad (Epic) "simply due to lackof space," says Bailey, "although I may look atplaylisting it this week". It's currently at num-ber 15 on the Radio Top 50.

Meanwhile, German artist Sarah Connor isup eight places this week with her single He'sUnbelievable (Epic), which currently stands atnumber 33. Annie Lennox is two places belowConnor with Pavement Cracks (BMG). It's onWire FM's B list but may be exalted to the Alist this week. "She's back on form-back toher best," says Bailey.

Out Of Time, Blur's first single off their newalbum Think Tank (Parlophone) is at number37, up from last week's 43. "Not many stationswent with that," says Bailey. "But I'm a big fan.It was on our A list for quite a while." He saysthat Wire FM will programme the band's newsingle Crazy Beat, but at the moment it's still alittle too early. Tracks which have already beenadded to the station's playlist inlcude Skin'snew single Trashed (Virgin), Stop Sign (BMG),the new single by Abs from UK boyband Fiveand the Big Brovaz single My Favourite Things(Sony). Bailey says he is also looking at addingOverrated (London) by former Sugababessinger Siobhan Donaghy.

Boys And Girls (Sony) by US act GoodCharlotte is at number 41 this week, up sevenplaces from 48. The track is on Wire's A listand is popular with the station's listeners. "It'syoung and angry-give them what they want,"says Bailey.

Generally, Wire FM has gone a littleyounger and tougher under Bailey, who nolonger programmes as many AC artists likeCeline Dion as before. Her new single, OneHeart (Columbia), is a new top 50 entry thisweek at number 49.

10 FM disappears in 'Zero Base' radio auction dramawhich has been running since the late'90s, and has been blighted by a num-ber of court cases. Originally supposedto be a straight cash auction, thelicensing process ended up as a mix ofan auction and "beauty parade", withsome frequencies requiring specifiedstation formats and others being opento broadcasters with a format of theirown choosing (see box below).

Sky Radio obtained one of the fournational FM frequency packages with-out format restrictions for its existingSoft AC station and also won, with DeGouwe Ouwe Zender, the "oldies" fre-

Says HMG managing directorDick van de Graaf: "We never reallyexpected to win two packages, andwere even afraid of loosing the YorinFM frequencies!"

There was, however, some consoli-dation for Radio 10's owners TRI-thecompany managed to acquire for itsAC station Noordzee FM the existingfrequencies of Sky Radio, Holland'slong-time number one station. Thefourth frequency package without for-mat restriction went to VRON'sCHR/Dance station Radio 538.

The national frequency packageswith specified formats went to Busi-ness. News Radio (news/talk) andID&T Dance Radio (specialist contem-

porary music). ID&T Dance Radio-owner Duncan Stutterheim, who start-ed his career 10 years ago organisingclub nights, can now start broadcast-ing the cable station's mix of dance,

urban and jazz terrestrial-ly on FM. The classicalmusic frequency packagewas not granted, since theSky Radio, owners of thesole applicant Classic FM,had already obtained onespecificied-format frequen-cy package, which underthe frequency allocationrules is the maximumallowed when combinedwith a package withoutformat restriction. Skysays that Classic FM will

continue as a cable -only station.Amongst the unsuccessful appli-

cants for national frequencies wereColorful Radio, Radio 192 andHaagstad Radio. The Veronica Organi-sation's Veronica FM (CHR) and KinkFM (Alternative) did not apply due tothe current financial troubles on theTV side of Veronica.

At the regional level, City FM andRebecca Radio were the biggest win-ners, with three regional frequency

Some of the"Zero Base" losers do not intend togive up their pursuit of terrestrialfrequencies, and TRI, Humor FM andArrow Classic Rock have all alreadyannounced that they will fight thedecisions in court. Everyway That I Can is Turkey'sfirst winning song in 25 attempts. Thesong was written by Sertab (full nameSertab Erener) with Demir Demikan,and was produced by Ozan Colakoglu.His biggest international hit to datewas Simarik by the Turkish male popsinger Tarkan. "We wanted a song withethnic flavour that would appeal towestern listeners," says Melih Ayrac-man, managing director of Sony MusicTurkey. Supporting Sertab on stage inRiga were two dancers from Germanyand one from Austria. "We said themusic and choreography should repre-sent east meets west," explains Ayrac-man.

Sony Music Turkey began promotingthe Sertab track in April, when itappeared on M&M's European TalentCD (004), distributed with the maga-zine's May 3 issue. "That really helped,"

says Ayracman. "A lot of people saidthey listened to it on that CD."

Erener will be promoting the singlethroughout Europe as early as nextweek. She's scheduled for an appear-ance on the German edition of Top OfThe Pops, and will be visiting publicfull -service station SR P5 Radio Stock-holm on June 6 (P5 was one of the firststations in Europe to add the song). P5music director Robert Jonsson putSertab on his playlist three days beforeEurovision after hearing it on the CDreleased by CMC/EMI in Denmark thatfeatures all 26 Eurovision entries. "It'sa good song that reminds me of theTarkan hit," says Jonsson.

Erener, born in Istanbul, releasedher debut album in 1992. Three morealbums have followed. She recordedOne More Cup of Coffee for a Bob Dylantribute album, and Dylan liked her ver-sion so much, he included it in thesoundtrack of Masked And Anonymous.A collection of Erener's songs will bereleased in Europe at the end of June,featuring songs in both English andTurkish, according to Lamblin.

Could the Capital Radio Group's AC/talkchain of Century stations be destined toreturn into the hands of their creator? GMGRadio, headed by JohnMyers (pictured)-theman who launched theCentury brand for his pre-vious employers BorderTV-has denied thatGMG is preparing a bidfor Capital once the UKgovernment's deregulat-ing Communications Bill is passed (a City ofLondon rumour to that effect boosted the valueof Capital's shares considerably last week).However, there is strong speculation thatGMG may be interested in "certain parts" ofCapital's empire, and the Century stationswould be an excellent fit for GMG's similarly -formatted Real Radio brand.

Martina Bruder, MD of Germany's Vivamusic TV operations, is to step down from herpost, although she will continue as a consul-tant to Viva Media president Dieter Gorny.Her motives for leaving have not been madepublic.

In financial results for the year endingMarch 31, Emap Performance, the musicdivision of UK media giant Emap, has seen itsoperating profit decline by 10% to £37 million.Its turnover, however, was up 12% to £155m.The decline in profitability was blamed on"increased launch investment and revenuepressure across higher margin radio opera-tions". The overall Emap company saw its pre-tax profits rise by 16% to £175m on a turnoverof £967m.

More financials... and news that troubledEdel Music has posted a net loss for the sixmonths ended March 31 of 1.3 million euros,compared to a net loss of 11 million euros inthe same period last year. Revenues fell 20% to73.1 million euros. The leading German indielast year slashed staffing by a quarter at itsHamburg headquarters.

PopKomm will go public this year. Theworld's largest music industry fair, until nowonly open to the trade, will run a parallel showfor consumers in a separate hall. As well asstands, there'll be platform discussions, inter-views with artists, seminars and workshops, aswell as stage performances. Universal isapparently the first major to jump on board.

Curious...UK general retailer Woolworthshas quietly rolled out its new online music ser-vice on its Woolworths.co.uk website. Theservice, called Preview, lets you pre -order aCD for delivery on its release date and, for asmall extra fee, get a digital "preview" copy ofthe album immediately. The digital tracksexpire once the official release date has passed.

And finally, MTV Networks Europe hastaken its first steps into the gaming arena withthe acquisition of a 50% stake in Frenchvideogame channel Game One. The deal isbeing done in partnership with French mediacompany Atari. Game One is distributed to 3.5million homes on all cable and satellite plat-forms in France.
