Marysville Keeps on Giving!

Our 2018 Toy Store made Christmas brighter for 1,041 children and their families! Shown here at Heritage Bank's 'Bah Humbug' event: Dell Deierling, Mike Mulligan, Harv Jubie, Tara Mizell, Ty Wernet and Patty Wernet.

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses, clubs, service groups, churches, fire stations, the police department, city employees, and countless students and individuals, many local families in need enjoyed a happier holiday season. Food, funds, gift cards, toys, time and talents were donated to ensure that those families had a happy Thanksgiving and a merry Christmas.

Major Contributors to the Marysville Community Food Bank

All-City Food Drive; Bandidos Motorcycle Club North County Chapter ($1,461 and 3,760 lbs. of food); Coastal Farm and Ranch ($1,000); Everett Clinic Foundation ($5,000); The Grove Church ($13,278 and 9,248 lbs. of food); Haggen Food & Pharmacy customers ($1,146.25); Marysville Noon Rotary ($5,000); Quil Ceda Village ($2,500 for Food for Thought); Sno-Isle Natural Food Co-Op customers ($1,104.60 from Register Round Up); Sodexo Foundation ($1,000); Soroptimist International of Marysville ($1,500); Tulalip Tribes Charitable Fund ($35,000); Walmart ($2,500); Windermere Real Estate ($1,652 and 52,879 lbs. of food from Snohomish County-Camano Association of Realtors Food Drive).

The Thousand-Pound Club These groups donated at least 1,000 pounds of food to MCFB during the holiday season: All-City Food Drive, Angel of the Winds, Getchell Fire Department, Getchell High School, Girls Scouts #211, Knutzen Farms, Lakewood Bus Drivers, Lakewood Middle School, Liberty Elementary School, Marysville Fire Department, Marysville Pilchuck High School, Maxi's Restaurant/Mighty 12 Alliance, Remedy Athletics, Roy Robinson, Sylvana Produce.

Major Contributors to the Toy Store City of Marysville Employees, Coldwell Banker Danforth, Fred Meyer, Greater Marys-ville Tulalip Chamber of Commerce, The Grove Church, Heritage Bank, HomeStreet Bank, The Jubie Family, Marine Fisheries, Marysville Firefighters Local 3219, Marysville Kiwanis, Marysville Noon Rotary, Maryville Police Department, PepsiCo, Providence Intervention Center for Assault and Abuse, Quil Ceda Village, Soroptimist International of Marysville, Tulalip Tribes Charitable Fund, Zumiez Foundation.

V o l u n t e e r s i n t h e S p o t l i g h t We thank all our volunteers, whose hard work and dedication allow us to serve our community. Here are our recent Volunteers of the Month!

September: Cyndy Ottaway Anyone who volun-teers to clean rest-rooms and sweep and scrub floors deserves a medal! Instead, we give Cyndy Ottaway our sincerest thanks. She responded to

a request for such a cleaner over a year ago because she wanted to give back to organizations like the MCFB that helped her family when she was a child. That same spirit is why she's a member of the Snohomish Lions Club, whose motto is 'We serve.' Cyndy is one busy lady! She has her own house-cleaning/window washing/gardening business and she also breeds dachshunds. She enjoys reading, gardening (including an orchard) and woodworking. She and her husband, Vern, have three children, two grandchildren and three great- grandchildren. How lucky the Food Bank is to have Cyndy!

October: Diane Nehring Diane Nehring is a people person. She enjoys meeting new people and spend-ing time with old friends. So, volun-teering at the Food Bank was a perfect

fit! After being retired for a few years from the Snohomish County PUD Credit Union where she worked for 25 years, several friends told her what a great place MCFB was to volunteer. She gave it a try a couple of years ago and found they were right! On Monday mornings she helps clients make their food selections and on Thursday mornings she helps bag food for Food for Thought and delivers those bags to participating schools.

Diane has a son and a daughter, six grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. She enjoys reading, hiking and spending time in the great outdoors (especially in the North Cascades, the Centennial Trail and Marysville's Ebey waterfront trail), playing the word game Boggle and seeing good movies—all of the above with friends. Diane likes encouraging others and receiving encourage-ment in return. She feels blessed by all those she's met and spent time with at the Food Bank. Diane, the feeling is certainly mutual!

November: Dan Pradera Over five years ago, Dan Pradera was asked to fill an opening on MCFB's board of directors. He has been an asset to us ever since. He prepares and makes weekly

bank deposits, helps with holiday distribution, sets up and tears down for the Toy Store and helps with Food for Thought as a back-up, including deliveries. He is also our translator whenever anything needs to be published in Spanish, and when folks sign their children up for kindergarten each spring, Dan sits at our information booth making sure all parents—English-speaking and Spanish-speaking alike—know about our services. Dan retired from a career in the Navy in 1995 and began a new career with Veteran Realty Services in 1996. He and his wife, Gina, have a son and a daughter and four grand-children who all live nearby. The sports he once enjoyed playing he now enjoys watching, supporting the Seattle Sounders, Seahawks and Mariners. He also enjoys knowing he's making a difference in someone else's life. Thank you, Dan, for giving your time and talent to those in need at MCFB!

December: Patricia Duemmell Twenty-five years ago Patricia Duem-mell was asked by a coworker if she'd like to help out with the Toy Store. Luckily, Patricia said yes! Since then, she has not only

helped with the yearly All-City Food Drive but has also been a key member of the Toy Store team, giving countless hours to ensure kids have warm coats, books and toys every Christmas. She works for the Marysville Police Depart-ment as their Evidence Tech, making sure that all evidence/property gets to the crime lab, court and back to its rightful owner. Patricia has four wonderful children and six beautiful grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoys yardwork and sewing—and helping people, noting that she was once in need many years ago and wants to give back. Many Marysville families would like to thank you, Patricia, for adding a touch of magic to their Christmases!

IN LOVING MEMORY

We were sad-dened to hear that Vince Bookey passed away on October 1, 2018 at age 90. A long-time volunteer, he was a driver and warehouse helper

until 2014. In 1956 he and his brother cofounded what is now National Food and Cherry Lane Farms, still owned and operated by the family. He leaves behind his wife Jeanne, four children, ten grandchildren and fourteen great- grandchildren. He is sorely missed by all who knew him.

THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT! What an incredible response we had during the holidays from this amazing community reaching out to help our families in need. It started in October with the Snohomish

County-Camano Association of Realtors Food Drive, where the Marysville Windermere office raised an astounding 52,879 pounds of food to support our holiday needs! In November many organizations hosted our food and toy collection barrels. The Grove Church brought in 9,248 pounds of food and over $13,000. Tulalip Tribes supported us with $35,000 for our programs. Then, multiple schools, businesses, service clubs, city employees, firefighters, police officers, neighborhoods and individuals put on food drives, toy

drives and coat drives to stock up the MCFB and the Toy Store. And all during this time volunteers in the background and in the forefront teamed up to get the food and gifts out to those in need.

All this effort and support means so much to so many. An encounter that Amy Howell recently had at Grocery Outlet speaks to the impact. Amy made a stop at the store to empty the food-collection barrel. While doing so, a teenage girl approached her and asked "Do you work for the Food Bank?" When Amy confirmed that she did, the girl replied, "I want to thank you so much. My family received support from the Food Bank and the Toy Store at Christmas time. The gifts we received made my siblings and me so happy. And our happiness put tears in my mother's eyes."

This is what it's all about! Dell Deierling, Director
